There's no sophomore slump here for Julie Roberts, whose second release is, if anything, richer and more powerful than her well-received debut. Credit the uniformly strong material, with not a throwaway among the eleven tracks, and four of the songs cowritten by Roberts. There's not a happy song among them, either, except for the nostalgic "Too Damn Young," about when love was fresh in a teenage way that it will never be again on the rest of the older-and-wiser material. The opening "Paint and Pillows" tells of a wife wronged by a cheating husband, and a hurt that can't be masked by window dressing. "First to Never Know" and "Lonely Alone" find a woman on the run from a relationship gone cold, while "A Bridge That's Burning" sings of the refusal to become the other woman. Best of all is the title track, through which the bittersweet voice of experience warns that "men and mascara always run." Though Roberts has the glamour-girl look of a Faith Hill, the Southern bluesiness of her vocal phrasing is closer to Lucinda Williams, and the fiddle and steel guitar that dominate Byron Gallimore's production show country music making few concessions to pop. --Don McLeese
Customer Reviews:
A very good record.......2007-01-22
The second record of Julie Roberts is, like we hope, a very good record, but isn't better or worst to the first one.
Julie preserve her style in this production like the other, just we especte a better third CD.
Ho-hum.......2007-01-05
Julie Roberts has big talent. Her voice has range and power and she treats the material on this album with respect. The material itself is the problem here. Without the vocal fingerprint of, say, Trisha Yearwood or Tanya Tucker, Roberts needs really good material to create a standout album. These are largely formulaic, uninteresting tunes which would not be out of place in the stupefying rotation of the average "top forty" country station. Ironically, she can't get air time there. It's a weird business.
Voice is stronger than the first .......2006-10-19
Lots of people have said they liked her first CD better, but this CD showcases her voice so much better. I absolutely LOVED her first record and have seen her perform live twice and I absolutely think her voice is incredible. She has a range and a freshness that not many country newcomers these days have. I thought this CD highlighted that range and freshness better than the first. I think she has really come into her own and I hope that she continues to make music for a long time. "That Ain't a Crime" and "Paint and Pillows" make me have goosebumps and want to sing along loudly in my car. I cannot believe that true fans of Julie roberts don't like this CD. Everyone has their own opinion, but still.....
Good, but not unique.......2006-10-10
If you liked her first one you'll like this one. The two flow very well together and almost make a Vol.1 Vol.2 arrangment. I hope she branches out and shows some of her other talents with her next release
Bad Karaoke.......2006-10-10
That really is, for me, what this album is. A lot of people have clearly really enjoyed it, but for my money, a poor rendition of Loveshack and a beer at the local bar would have sufficed. The cover of the pop song is probably the most karaoke sounding song, and I notice it is not available for listening on this page. Probably a good move.

While her debut's been promoted through a glitzy high-fashion photo package and items in trendy magazines, South Carolina native Roberts, who has the looks for such hype, also delivers the goods. Her smoky, beguiling voice echoes Bonnie Raitt and a young Tanya Tucker. She and producer/guitarist Brent Rowan shun the blaring arena rock or folk-flavored pretense that plagues many debuts. This one emphasizes solid, quality commercial fare in an Americana-based setting heavy on acoustic guitars and rhythm. Roberts sets the tone with Jamie O'Hara's fetchingly acerbic "You Ain't Down Home." The winsome "Unlove Me" and let-it-rip "Just 'Cause We Can" each pack a wallop; so does the witty morning-after chronicle "Wake Up Older" and the dark, evocative "No Way Out." No overdone power ballads here. Understatement drives her elegant, heartbreaking interpretation of Julie Miller's "I Can't Get Over You." In the end, Roberts remembers an axiom many on Music Row long ago forgot: a powerful voice, simple, honest storytelling, and no-frills music are still what country's about. --Rich Kienzle

Real Blued Country Soul.......2007-06-01
The debut album from South Carolina's Julie Roberts sounds more Memphis than Nashville. Her voice is smokey and sultry, the tunes are fun and funky at times, and its hard to think of anyone to compare this to. Probably the closest is Bonnie Raitt, as the Amazon reviewer stated. I love the way she bends a note; no other country diva sings 'em like Julie, however "I Can't Get Over You" is reminicient of the best 70s country women. "No Way Out" is a hip, fun blues jam with an awesome guitar/piano break. It should have been a hit or club favorite. "Break Down Here" is the obvious hit, but the simple, souful beauty of "Unlove Me" and "If You Had Called Yesterday" shine just as bright.
This CD will leave you longing and aching for more. Faith Hill wants to sound like this. These songs are real life, I mean how many country songs proclaim, "my mouth tastes like yesterday's news?" Highly Recommended; I can't stress enough how well this works.
Great Julie ..... Where have you been all my life?.......2007-03-03
Always wonderful to discover a great performer that will obcess you for years with their talent
Feel Good.......2006-03-24
Even though there are some sad songs, this album just has a feel good quality to it! I LOVE it and can listen to it over and over. I bought this album after hearing someone sing it keoroke a bunch of times(Julie's version is way better btw), and after listening to it a few times, ended up loving the whole album! Now I just can't get enough! I can't wait for new music from Julie!
Not perfect, but pretty darn close.......2005-08-10
Julie has one of the most tantilizing voices I've ever heard. She has that raspy, provocative type voice where you want to listen to her because you swear that she's hot. With that said, her material is actually quite good. I'm not the hugest country fan, but there are some artists that I can't help but appreciate and Julie is one of them. That's not to say she has her low points. Personally, when it comes to country I prefer a good ballad and so I'm impressed with about half of Julie's album. This review may not be for everyone since I'm giving you my opinion and my opinion is that honky-tonk sucks. So songs like 'you ain't down home' get skipped on my cd player...but then there are GOLDEN songs like 'break down here' or 'wake up older' and my personal favorite 'rain on a tin roof' which I feel is one of the best country songs out there. Julie's low points are forgiven by her sultry voice and amazing slow tempo ballads that get put on repeat in my car over and over and over again. With this debut Julie proved that she has what it takes to be here for a long time to come.
Excellent first start!.......2005-07-18
I've come to expect a more contemporary sound from the likes of Faith and Shania. The pendulum has definitely swung back to the male country singers, so I've been leary of buying albums from the female artists. But when I first heard Julie Robert's breakthrough single, I thought her voice was divine, just enough twang. I had to rush out and buy the cd. Several months later, I'm still listening to it. There are no songs that I skip over, which is so rare these days with cds. I think this is a solid effort by her and her producers and I'm looking forward to her second album.

The next big thing in Country music.......2004-05-24
Though Trace Adkins has done his own version of "Break Down Here", I think Julie truly does justice with this song. She's a beautiful woman singing about heartbreak...and what more do you need to get someone's attention? Julie Roberts really sounds like the next big thing in Country music.
Though I don't own this CD Single, I have heard "Break Down Here" many times and I've seen the music video...plus I've heard little snippets of Julie's other songs, like "Wake Up Older" ... and those songs sound like they'll be huge hits! Check out Julie Roberts!
Julie is awesome!.......2004-05-19
This CD is incredible! Both songs are exactly what country music needs to hear right now! I can't wait for the whole album to be released - I've heard it on the CMT webasite and it is even better!
AWESOME!.......2004-05-14
The single is great, but make sure you don't miss the whole album!
Julie's whole cd is GREAT. My favorite songs would have to be "Unlove Me" and "Wake Up Older, although they are all fabulous. Julie has a great voice that's not heard everyday. I am sure she will be around for a long time to come! If you are a country fan, make sure not to miss this album!
anxious for more........2004-04-19
This single was well worth my money, and I would encourage fan of any type of music to buy it. Her voice is wonderful, and she is definately just getting started, I can see her becoming big in the near future!
Amazing!.......2004-04-18
Julie's voice is amazing! If she can write more songs like "Break Down Here" she can make it big!

Product Description
Clever folk-pop confection Kitty (Snyder) began her music career with Loveapple, a band that was formed by classmates at Fredonia State University in Fredonia, NY. Her warm vocal style was a highlight of Loveapple and got Kitty some attention, including being asked to audition for 10,000 Maniacs when Natalie Merchant left the band (Kitty decided not to go to the audition because of schedule conflicts and travel issues). In 1997, she convinced the band to relocate to Athens, GA, but by that time they were having significant creative differences, with Kitty wanting to explore more of a folk style and Loveapple leaning more towards fleshed-out indie-rock. In 1998, Kitty began playing solo shows and self-produced a cassette collection of her songs; an acoustic set that she played with Cracker brought her to the attention of David Lowery, who signed her to Pitch-a-Tent Records and released her first solo album, Celebrate. A good, folksy album with a touch of Southern twang, Snyder tugs at the emotions with its mood changes and deeply personal lyrics. It's a stripped-down, mostly acoustic, percussion-less record, which makes it truly alternative these days. TRACKS: 1) Another Day 2) New York Years 3) Breathe 4) How I Know 5) Spit 6) Let Me Climb 7) Pinkeye 8) Celebrate 9) Elf II 10) Princes
