More of a happy-go-lucky artist in his younger days, Tim McGraw here sounds as if he carries the weight of the world on his shoulders. After the comparatively lighthearted, irresistibly catchy opening single, "Last Dollar (Fly Away)," most of the midtempo material that follows ranges from the somber to the morose. There's the night-shift weariness of "I'm Workin'," the alcohol-drenched heartbreak of "Whiskey and You," and the soul-tortured title track. Even a song with the upbeat title "Put Your Lovin' on Me" has McGraw asking his lover to "be my drug" and "take this weight off me." Things turn positively lethal with "Between the River and Me," the story of revenge on an alcoholic, wife-beating stepfather. The set also features the obligatory duet of marital devotion with Faith Hill ("I Need You") and a couple of nods toward classic country ("Kristofferson" and the closing "Shotgun Rider," which could be McGraw's "Mamas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys"). "Nothin' to Die For" returns to the inspirational vein of "Live Like You Were Dying," but little here finds McGraw in a feel-good mode. --Don McLeese

3 out of 5 stars Not Tim's best.......2007-07-09

I bought this CD because of the duet of Tim and Faith Hill, I Need You. It's an amazing song and I absolutely love it! However, the rest of the CD doesn't do much for me. It's not bad, but it's not great either. Some songs are better than others, but the duet is the only one that really stands out to me, although I do enjoy the last track. I can't totally trash this CD, but I just can't highly recommend it either.

5 out of 5 stars A Great album.......2007-07-05

This is a great album, it was my first Tim Mcgraw cd. There is something very real and down to earth about these songs. It has a very authentic feel to it, life, the truimphs, the loses, love... And all throughout there is a spiritual/inspirational feel to the entire album. Tim Mcgraw sings from the heart.

The song "I Need You" just blew me away, it's one of my all time favorite songs. "Last Dollar (Fly Away)" is such a fun song.

All the songs on this album are very good and memorable. Now I have almost all of Mr. Mcgraw's cds!

A Great Album...

5 out of 5 stars Let It Play!.......2007-07-01

I have just returned home from Canada - travelled there to see Tim & Faith on their Soul2Soul Tour. The show was absolutely sensational, and I even got to shake the man's hand! Until I heard these songs performed live! I must admit I felt that the album was a little flat and heavy compared to previous Tim efforts, however I now have a newfound appreciation of their depth and McGraw's abilities. Diversity definitely a word which can be attributed to him and his prowess as a performner.

Between The River & Me marries the aural aspects of Garth Brooks' Thunder Rolls with the lyrics of the Dixie Chicks' Goodbye Earl, and it really works. The obligatory Tim & Faith duet is magnificent - I Need You's lyrics really demonstrate that with a gorgeous melody to boot. Last Dollar is as up-tempo as you can get - a great party tune. One further favourite is Suspicions which could easily be a soul artist performing - exceptional.

I hope Tim's next album has some more hopeful tracks on it, definitely. However as an artistic piece, the album is really quite flawless, with an impressive story-telling dexterity that so many song-writers can only aspire to.

Look forward to the next exciting chapter in the McGraw chronicles, and will DEFINITELY return to the US or Canada to hear the songs live! Britain really does not know what it is missing!

3 out of 5 stars "Let it Go" Falls a little flat for this McGraw fan.......2007-06-27

By this point in his career Tim McGraw is one of the most decorated Country artists of the past 20 years. Unfortunately I found this album to be out in Left Field bouncing along instead of heading out over the fence. Many of the songs have the signature soulful vocals from McGraw, however I found the songwriting to be much weaker than previous albums. Nothing instrumentally seems to have the hooks or emotional sounds of albums past, so instead of peaks and valleys I felt like many of the songs just plodded along without any particular direction. Not until the eighth song did I find a song that really reached out and grabbed me, and with "Nothin to Die For" I at this point am hoping the rest of the album will finish strong. It does pump up the volume a bit with the semi-honky "Between the River and Me" as it also has a bit of a darker appeal within its sound and songwriting. The song "Train #10" is somewhat memorable, but nothing to write home about.

With song eleven the CD rolls into "I Need You" in which his wife Faith Hill sings along. By this time I've heard many tunes that the couple have sang and though this one does not stand out to me as those have, I really enjoyed it for the most part and much take my hat off to Faith's vocal performance on this track. Thirteen tracks in all, it is not near as strong as past CD's but if you are a big Tim McGraw fan and have enjoyed everything he has done up to this point, you may find it appealing enough.

4 out of 5 stars If You're a McGraw Fan, You Will Enjoy "Let it Go.".......2007-06-18

"Let it Go" is a solid McGraw CD. It may not be the best CD of his but certainely one you will be glad you have in your collection. My favorite songs on the CD are: Last Dollar, Suspicions, Train #10, Between the River and Me, Comin' Home, and Shotgun Rider. These could all easily be singles in the future. The first part of the CD the songs, other than Last Dollar, all sound similar. That's one reason I enjoy all the songs on the second half so much better. I am getting sick of his duets with Faith. She's got a great voice, but she's not a favorite of mine. There is speculation that 07 will be the last time Tim and Faith will tour together. Thank god for that. Overall this CD is worth a four star rating. It would have been five but too many just so-so songs. I do think it's better than "Live Like You Were Dying." I don't know why people feel that is such a great CD. It has an awful depressing feel to it. The only songs I like on that CD are "My Old Friend" and "Back When." "Let it Go," in my humble opinion, is much better.

Tim McGraw's second greatest-hits collection in six years is also his ninth consecutive debut at #1 on the Billboard country charts. That means he must be doing something right. But what, precisely, aside from keeping up his hunk factor, and maturing his voice? Well--choosing dynamic songs that resonate at the very core of most folks' emotional center, for starters. So it's no surprise that this 16-song package kicks off with "Live Like You Were Dying," his ten-week #1 crossover hit. In addition to chart-toppers dating from 1995 ("Not a Moment Too Soon"), McGraw fills the track list with two smashes that never appeared on his own albums: his Grammy-winning duet with wife Faith Hill, "Like We Never Loved At All," and "Over and Over," the soulful Nelly confession in which McGraw, his voice technically altered, essentially serves as the rapper's tortured psyche. Of the four new songs, a cover of Ryan Adams's "When the Stars Go Blue" emerges as a stellar example of the pained loner ballads McGraw does so well, and brings to mind the faint desperation inherent in his interpretation of Elton John's "Tiny Dancer." And "My Little Girl," one of two rare McGraw co-writes here (joining "I've Got Friends Who Do"), draws on his experience as a parent and promises to flatten any father who's ever tucked in his daughter. Through the years, McGraw's on-record persona has evolved from the wimpish underdog ("Don't Take the Girl") to the strong, sensitive alpha male, both in his take-charge delivery and his sometimes edgy repertoire ("Red Ragtop"). All in all, this lengthy, hooky offering isn't just a "value pack" for McGraw fans--it's reason to hire a skywriter. --Alanna Nash

Album Description

Tim McGraw Reflected: Hits Vol 2, his second collection of greatest hits. Showcasing a body of work bookended by 1994's "Not A Moment Too Soon" and 2006's "My Old Friend," it is a reminder of the consistency and depth that have made him such an icon. Several of the songs are drawn from two albums he recorded in a mountaintop retreat with his touring band, 2002's Tim McGraw & the Dancehall Doctors, and 2004's Live Like You Were Dying. Together, they sold seven million copies, and between them they produced hits like "Watch The Wind Blow By," "Red Ragtop," "She's My Kind of Rain," "Real Good Man," and the ten-week #1, "Live Like You Were Dying," all of which are included here. The project also includes "Everywhere," from the CD of the same name, and "Grown Men Don't Cry" and "The Cowboy In Me," from 2001's "Set This Circus Down."

4 out of 5 stars good music.......2007-05-14

My daughter is getting married and wanted a song from this cd to use I was delighted that I liked the other music just as well

1 out of 5 stars Butchery.......2007-04-06

A decent collection overall of his "good" songs (I don't really like him anyways), but he completely manages to butcher "When the Stars Go Blue." The original is WAY better, and The Corrs covered it with Andrea and Bono (from U2) MUCH better. The country twang just totally kills the mood of the song. I am a professional audio engineer, and heard him do this song live and it just made me cringe. Skip this CD.

2 out of 5 stars not the best.......2007-03-28

Not Tim's best work. I only liked 1 of the tracks. Spend your money on his most recent albums. I don't think these were his greatest hits.

5 out of 5 stars Great songs on this CD.......2007-03-26

I love this entire CD. This one is worth it. Sometimes I have bought a CD for 1 or 2 songs. This one is full of great songs.

1 out of 5 stars He's Horrible.......2007-03-04

McGraw is a pretentious, talentless slimeball who exploits the ignorance and poor taste of his fans. His songs are mediocre at best and generally unlistenable to anyone who appreciates good music. Basically, he is a talentless slob who ranks among all the other bubble-gum pop/country performers as forgettable and pretentious.

And if that wasn't enough, he absolutely butchers Ryan Adams' beautiful song "When The Stars Go Blue." It's tough to hear McGraw hack such a lovely song, but at least Adams (who is one of the better singer/songwriters around in any genre) is making some money for it.

If you like good music or real artists, you should look elsewhere - perhaps check out Ryan Adam's original version of "When The Stars Go Blue". Regardless, McGraw is a classless act and a mockery to the country music establishment.

With a sad tenor that sounded like Mr. Haney from Green Acres, Tim McGraw, a freshman in country's crowded class of '92, seemed the least likely to graduate to superstardom. But eight years and 20 million albums and singles later, here he is with a greatest hits package so stuffed with songs--15 in all--that it doesn't have room for any new tunes, or even the best of all, "Everywhere." McGraw's appeal is two-fold: Aside from his unlistenable duets with wife Faith Hill and the abysmal "Indian Outlaw" that jump-started his career, he's had excellent taste in songs. And he's the epitome of the average guy in search of extraordinary love--the loser who becomes a winner. You see it all here, in the hate-it-but-love-it "Don't Take the Girl," the adrenaline rush of "Something Like That," and the infectious "I Like It, I Love It." If this album doesn't give hope to every karaoke singer in America, nothing will. --Alanna Nash

Indian Outlaw is what put Tim McGraw on the map and it is a great song. Some people do not like the song because of its lyrics, in this day and age I guess everyone has to be politically correct. I like this song becase it is fast and fun. I think it is one his greatest songs. Tim McGraw is a very good singer and this cd is a good start if you are just getting into Tim and country music.

someone told me that Tim McGraw was the best in country music... i bought this cd because i heard some of his songs at a line dance club, and i didnt like this cd that much i only loved the songs "just to see you smile" and "it's your love" man i loved them! but that's about it

The CD has some of McGraw's classic tunes and is a real fun listener. My only complaint would be its opening track, Indian Outlaw, which I consider annoying and almost scared me from the rest of the CD.

5 out of 5 stars A must have.......2007-01-04

If you've got all the individual albums, you probably don't need a greatest hits CD. But, I'd never gotten around to purchasing any of McGraw's albums. Between this and vol 2, there is pretty much every song you've ever heard on the radio and then some.

On the back cover of his ninth album Tim McGraw sits atop a horse, which just happens to be standing in the foyer of an elegant home. McGraw sits backwards in the saddle, looking not at where he's going, but where he's been. The image tips off the theme of this solid, 16-song album--for a singer who doesn't write, it's as close to autobiography as it gets. "How Bad Do You Want It," for example references not only bluesman Robert Johnson's crossroads chat with ol' Lucifer, but also the kind of relentless drive that got McGraw to the top of the Nashville heap. The dryly funny "Back When" finds the man who recently bought a $6.4 million Beverly Hills mansion yearning for a simpler time. "Walk Like a Man" talks about the kind of abusive father McGraw himself had before he discovered he was the son of baseball legend Tug McGraw. The late pitcher is surely the subject of three songs here about death, loss, and carrying on, especially the title track, a big, uplifting affirmation of life. If it's also a little sappy, so be it--singing about the most painful thing he's ever endured, he gives it a dignified, understated reading (and only a week or so after his father's passing). It takes an artist to do that, and while McGraw may not be the greatest of warblers, nobody in country can touch him at conveying emotions too deep to express in words. Look for this to be the album of his career. --Alanna Nash

5 out of 5 stars Hit after Hit!.......2007-05-24

You don't have to like country to love Tim McGraw's music. And this is by far his best album yet. My favorite two songs are "Live Like You Were Dyin'" and "Drugs or Jesus." Both tunes compel you stop, listen and ponder your life every time you hear them played. "How Bad Do You Want It" and "Everybody Hates Me" are fun songs you can't help but raise the volume and play them loud. I had to buy this CD twice because I played it so often I scratched it up!

Mr. Faith Hill rocks and kicks butt again with the memorable DO YOU WANT FRIES WITH THAT?. I heard this album in the jukebox in my local pub and it kicks major rear! I wouldn't be a bit surprised if this album won Grammys. What the hell? Half of one of the most popular country couples deserves them, right?

Just as his wife, Faith Hill, gets slicker and more hermetically sealed on each album, Tim McGraw reaches back on this record to a time-honored, if now rare, country music tradition--recording with his road band. Like Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Merle Haggard before him, McGraw craved the artistic freedom and rawer sound he enjoyed with his road boys, and he was correct in thinking the Dancehall Doctors would leave their own honest stamp on the music, as well as a '70s rock & roll feel. Retreating to a studio in upstate New York, they recorded 15 keepers. Only one, a cover of Elton John's "Tiny Dancer," lands with a thud, as McGraw tries to duplicate John's vocal nuances and never takes control of the song. But elsewhere, he and the band are surprisingly emotional, soulful, and vulnerable. Together, they turn "Red Ragtop," a song about teen lovers who abort their child, into a universal lyric about choices and regrets, and fashion the two songs about revisiting the people and places that shape who you are ("Sing Me Home," "Home") into something profound. The album sags in spots, and McGraw and his coproducers misstep in adding faux R&B vocal washes here and there. But this is a good, solid effort to make music and not just the radio charts. --Alanna Nash

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Now you get the Real Tim!.......2006-12-15

The Dancehall Doctors are here!
If you've ever seen Tim in concert, you know how great this band is. Darren Smith is one of my favorite guitar players of all time. He and Tim have a chemestry on stage that carries over very well in studio... Along with the rest of this band.
Here's a small review of a great CD.

The Songs:

Comfort Me is an upper-mid tempo song that was recorded in the wake of the September 11th attacks on our home land. Very patriotic song, but unlike any others that came out around this time. Tells the listener about the the great things that are a part of our country, no war, no negativity at all.

Tickin' Away is a little slower, tempo-wise, that the first track, but is no less powerful. Tim talks here about this figurative and literal staring at a clock on the wall as the hands keep moving and life ticks away. The stuborn man sits and waits for miss perfect to walk back into his life, but is realizing slowly, that its not going to happen.

Home. What about this one? Its just like the title says. Its a southern style country song about coming back to visit your family. The descriptions are priceless. This song paints one beautiful picture after another. Mostly acoustic, very country.

Red Ragtop starts off with Bob Minner pluckin' the banjo, as another of the more country sounding songs on this record slowly works its way to go. A mid-tempo song about a love that happened when the 2 were young, and didnt know everything yet. The memories of the good things and the bad things that come with the mistakes that most of us made when we were late-teenageers. Even though the love is long gone, every time that car drives by, she in it... If only for a moment.

That's Why God Made Mexico is a country ballad that ties in a couple different stories of love gone wrong and hard times that are cured only by a simple trip accross the border. A trip to the place with the white sands and the tiki huts that make you forget all about your problems and hardships, to only have to live for the moment. Lighthearted lyrics are rarely turned into such a heartfelt song as this one.

Watch the Wind Blow By is a great slow love song about just letting the world go by as the 2 just stare into each-others eyes and think about nothing but being in love. This song is the perfect example of the love that you can see Tim and Faith sharing. It's also a great song to slow-dance to.

Illegal. Turn it up! A country rocker with a simple lyric about the girl that you cant keep your eye off of. The addition of Don Henley and Timmy Schmidt on harmony vocals make this song sound very much like something you heard on a late 70's Eagles' record, but with that unmistakable Tim McGraw rock n country sound.

Sleep Tonight is another mid-tempo song about making the night at hand last and last. Tim belts out his love for his current situation, and how badly he doesnt want to call it a night. It's a fun lyric, not slow by any means, but you might still get away with singing this one to you best girl.

I Know How to Love You Well. This one is another one of those slow country ballads. The man in this song continually proffesses his undying love to the girl. The song is musically tight... Something you might have come to expect out of the typical nashville studio band.

Sing Me Home. A pause, and a moment of relection is needed after this song... OKay, now back to the review. This song is a slow, mellow, southren rock style ballad about getting back to your roots. The carachter in the song talks about hearing his song after being gone for so long. Weather figurative, or literal, it is unknown, but he openly asks the listener to let that song sing him back to where he's from... Back to simpler times. Back to the life he's always loved.

She's My Kind of Rain is a loud country ballad full of figurative statements that help to tell the world how the singer feels about the woman he loves. The lyrics may be hard for the casual listener to follow, but each verse, each line in fact, paints a great picture. Very colorful song.

Who Are They Is an up-tempo country rock song that asks one simple question... Who are these people who make up all these rules that society is supposed to abide by. Everyone always says "They say your not supposed to lalalalala..." Whatever. Tim's mad here, and rightly so. This song is about breaking out, getting away from the mold that society as a whole has conformed to. Great song pick here.

Real Good Man is a rocker. In the style of Renegade from Tim's early days, this is the most guitar-driven song on the album. The singer tells the girl that even though he's a gentleman, that he still knows how to party. Or, as Tim says in the song, he may be a real bad boy, but he's deffinatly a real good man.

All We Ever Find is a mid-tempo ballad that seems to touch lightly on not knowing what the world hold for the future. And as such, the man is telling the girl to lay it all on the line, to be completely honest and open about everything, so the relationship can keep moving forward on its way to forever. In case forever doesnt come. That way, no time is wasted on things that dont mean a thing. Another really tight song musically, as are the lot on this album it seems.

Tiny Dancer is a great rock n roll remake of a classic by Elton John. This song, even tought from a country band, rock harder and louder than Elton's original ever did. This song was even used as the opener on the tour to support Tim's previous stufio effort.

All in all, this album is by far, the best that Tim has done up to this point. The fact that this album is the effort of an entire band shows in the way it sounds. These men are obviously a close knit group of musicians that have benn around each other for a while. They have a chemistry that is not unlike that of some of the great classic rock bands in history. Think Boston, Journey, Bad Company and others in that style, and then put that fiddle and steel guitar in there where they're supposed to be, and you've got the Dancehall Doctors. A great album, a great singer, a great band. Great Job guys!

2 out of 5 stars Not his best.......2006-08-14

Tim has had better albums. Personally I'm not crazy about thuis one. It's my least favorite.

5 out of 5 stars This is earlier Tim.......2006-03-14

I bought this one mainly because it had "Red Ragtop" and "She's my kind of rain". I hadn't heard of some of the other songs but once I played them, I'm hooked. The whole CD is fabulous. Another great one. How can it not be? It's Tim!

5 out of 5 stars A Sefl-Respecting Texan.......2005-12-04

I took offense with one of the reviewers that stated that no self-respecting Texan would buy this CD. Well, let me tell you that this Texan bought it and loves it. Tim never said he wrote his songs. Most artists do not write their own music, but they do put their stamp on a song. This album is one of his best, and when other artists are still looking for so-called patriotic songs to sing, Tim will be singing REAL songs.

Tim's newest CD, "Fireflies" is a gut-wrenching collection of songs, but you have to LISTEN to the songs and feel them. Tim's grief was definitely in this album.

Keep it up Tim. Keep it real....

5 out of 5 stars Tim's GOLDEN Album.......2005-08-13

If you want to get into Tim McGraw this is the place to start. Now the great thing about this album is, that it may have one or two 'skipable' tracks as you may call them, they aren't so bad that you have to skip them. You can listen and maybe even get into them after a while. That's why this CD is so prime is that you can listen to it all the way through and enjoy it. So the CD starts off with 'Comfort Me' and then follows into 'Tickin' Away' which is great and 'Home' which is even beter. 'Red ragtop' is one AMAZING song about the choices we make and the con. they cause, you know how sometimes you think that your actually making things better when in the end you end up f@#$ing it all up...yeah that's what this song is about. It all comes down to the day she stopped loving me. 'That's Why God Made Mexico' is one of those 'not-so-awsome' tracks, but again, it's listenable. 'Watch The Wind Blow By' is amazing, just cool, calm and collected...you can just sit on the beach with a corona and be content listening to this song. 'Illegal' is my least favorite song, but I must admit that when he sang it in concert i was bopping my head a bit...see what I mean...it's listenable. 'Sleep Tonight' is the best song on the album. It's just a great love song about not wanting the time with her to end. Amazing job. 'I Know How to Love You Well' is decent as is 'Sing Me Home' but no love song compares to 'She's My Kind of Rain' which was actually one of my wedding songs. I love this song, it describes the feeling you get with the one you adore. 'Who Are They' resembles 'Back When' in a way, not my favorite choice but I can listen to it without cringing. 'Real Good Man' is my anthem. I had my bridal party dance to this with me...it was kinda funny. 'All We Ever Find' is a sweet song about finding true love in the arms of your wife. In closing I must say that 'Tiny Dancer' is almost BETTER than the origonal...that said, BUY THIS ALBUM NOW!

As a singer who has parlayed boyish charm and modest talent into a multiplatinum career, Tim McGraw seems like the guy next door who got incredibly lucky--and not just with his marriage to Faith Hill. This easy-listening collection features a generous 14 cuts, heavy on power ballads ("You Get Used to Somebody," "Take Me Away from Here," "Why We Said Goodbye") with soaring choruses and frothy sentiments, but light on soulful substance. For variety, McGraw proves a dead-on Springsteen mimic with "Forget About You," dubiously links himself to Hank Williams and Elvis with "Things Change," and crosses over toward Ricky Martin territory on the Spanish-tinged "Let Me Love You." Hill joins hubby on background vocals for the comparatively subtle "Angry All the Time." --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2007-04-02

The songs on this album are melodic and I like the stories that they tell. I like this particular album better than most of Tim's other albums.

5 out of 5 stars A SUPERSTAR WHO IS GOOD!.......2006-04-26

I was a little hesitant to buy an album by a big star. But, this cd is great! All tracks are good. My best is FORGET ABOUT US and the title song. Great sound and production. This would interest country, pop, folk, and rock fans. A CAN'T MISS!

5 out of 5 stars BEST TIM MCGRAW ALBUM!.......2005-06-19

This is Tim McGraw's BEST album yet. I love "Angel Boy", "Cowboy In Me", "Telluride" (since I ski there), "Grown Men Don't Cry" and "Angry all the Time". Of course all the songs are AMAZING, but those are the best. There is not one song on this album that I skip over, which I do A LOT when I listen to other CDs. If you are looking to purchase a Tim McGraw album get this one. Trust me, I have every Tim McGraw album.

5 out of 5 stars BEST TIM ALBUM TO DATE!!.......2005-04-06

My favorite Tim McGraw album to date. This album has some of the best songs that he has recorded. Many of which he never released which is a real shame. Telluride has got to be in my top 5 Tim songs. He has such a way about his music that you cannot help but be pulled in and carried along for the ride. "Take Me away from Here" really is one of those songs that makes you look at your life, and it makes you think.
When He shot the video for "The Cowboy in Me" I was at the concert, and you can see me in the video. I am holding this flashing red light that says "Tim McGraw - Bud Light" and they kept it in the video so I am also a fan of that song just for that!! J

5 out of 5 stars things change.......2005-04-02

Set this circus down is a step in a different direction for Tim McGraw. While it still has the same style of his earlier albums, it also takes a deeper step into what he was attempting with "A place in the sun".
"The cowboy in me" is rockier than his usual music, and has strong guitar themes throughout it, yet the voice is still pure country, as are the lyrics. The lyrics are song, and it's either a song you get or you don't. It either will strike a chord in you, and make you sit up and realise "Hey I get that. I get what he means by the cowboy in me" or you won't.
"Teluride" talks about a young boys innocence fading, and the bittersweet remembrance of young love.
You get used to somebody is the traditional love song that appears on McGraw's album, with strong poignant lyrics such as "I never dreamed when i was letting you go that i would wake up and miss you this much" that touch even the coldest of hearts.
"Unbroken" borders on as pop country as perhaps McGraw gets, and has a great beat to it.
"Things change" is a must listen to song, and it looks at how music has changed throughout the years, and it's something a music lover who knows their music can listen to and relate to. it talks about the perjudice, and how much music has changed over the years from Elvis Presley to now. With strong guitar, and strong vocals this song is a pure winner.
The line that really touches deep is "they say it's too country, it's too rock n roll but it's only music if you can feel it in your soul." Pure magic.
I think one of the biggest gems on this album is the song "Angry all the time" which talks about the breakup of a relationship, and what made it disintegrate. the lyrics are powerful, strong, and touch deeply.
Right throughout the album the lyrics are strong, the vocals of Mcgraw goes from strength to strength.
His relationship with his group The dancehall doctors is strong, and it shows throughout the whole album.
An album worth having in the collection, and it's understandable why Mcgraw keeps on winning with his music.

McGraw is an artist that can spin a tale with only his soulful voice against a canvas of music. He starts his fourth record by painting a vivid picture of a simple, loving country life with "Where the Green Grass Grows," which gives the listener the same desire to live in that perfect place where less is so much more. The impassioned duet "It's Your Love" with wife Faith Hill will be one of country music's most requested love songs. Even in this day of the rehashed country sound, McGraw's haunting vocals boost the music: He has the ability to bring a tear to the eye and then sweep in with lighthearted rockers such as "Hard on The Ticker. --Paula Ghergia

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Could be the best..........2007-01-03

I seem to only review CDs that I believe are deserving of the coveted 5-star Amazon rating. This one, is not only a non-exception, but this one could very well be my favorite CD. Its hard to pick a favorite with Tim putting together so many good albums. Not to mention all the stuff Pearl Jam has released, but thats for different reviews. This disc is a great start to fifnish album. I love those. Lets start at the beginning. Where the Green Grass Grows is a great up-tempo song. It's deffinatly country, but the steel guitar falls a far second to the fiddle. The drumming is mixed more like a rock song, but that just helps push the tempo. The lyrics are great. Talking about getting out of the old town, and away from the city. To live out in the country, where the green grass grows.

For a Little While Is another good up-tempo song. It's a little more rock n roll than the first track. More piano driven, but thie fiddle and steel still own a big part in the song. The lyrics reflect on an old summer love. The kind that you know wont ever come back, but you'll never forget.

It's Your Love is the first Tim and Faith duet on one of Tim's CDs. There is no way that you cant tell these two are in love from the feeling of this great ballad. The organ that permiates the song is that of a 60's rock song, but there's no mistaking the great steel guitar solo in this one.

Aint That the Way That It Always Ends is a very up-tempo rocker about some of the people we meet in our lives that have textbook stories of love gone bad. The way the song is played and sang, it sounds happy, but you cant help but feel a little sorry for the people named within.

I Do But I Dont is a mid-tempo modern country tune about a man who is indecisive about a relationship. This one could be a non-standout track, except for the fact that its the only one like it on the disc. That in itself makes it stand out from the rest in its own way. Great Steel guitar in this one.

One of These Days. This one could be a tear-jerker. This is a soft ballad about a man reflecting on his past, and wanting to take back the bad things he's done. Wanting to be a better person. Realizing finnaly that in order to love others, one must learn to love himself. Beautiful song.

Hard on the Ticker is a honky-tonk style rocker talking about the girl who he might have once though could make him feel younger, but the effects are exactly opposite. Deffinatly a lead guitar and steel guitar driven song.

Everywhere. The album's name-sake for good reason. This song is mid-tempo, sort of Country-Rock. I could hear the Eagles doing this one. Simply about remebering a love that's been lost. Missing her, seeing her everywhere. Instrumentation is top-notch. Tim's Vocals have never owned a song like they do this one.

Just to See You Smile is a mostly acoustic folk - country song about running into the girl that used to love you, and remebering all the things you did for her, and realizing you'd still do them. Just to make her happy. This one was a huge hit for Tim, and once you hear it, you'll understand why.

You Just Get Better All The Time. This one is a very soft ballad. The man here is just proffessing his undying love to the woman he's with. This is one of those songs you could imagine a 70 year old man singing to his wife at their 50th anniversery. It's a very powerful love song.

You Turn Me On is another country rocker about the man who was ready to give up on the whole relationship thing until he met THE woman. He doesnt know what happened, but now all his plans have changed.

Over all, this CD is simply amazing. I've taken many a road trip where I made sure this disc was included in the pile. It's a must.
If you're reading this, you probably know Tim's music... This is no different. If you come into this album expecting to hear the typical great CD by Mr. McGraw, you'll get what you want and more.

5 out of 5 stars You want this CD.......2006-03-14

Tim is again absolutely fabulous as always. Almost all of these songs were released and played on the radio. There is also a bonus track called "You turn me on". My favorite is "Just to see you smile". You'll be glad you added this one to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars The first truly great CD by McGraw.......2005-10-16

Until "Everywhere", the only CD I could have recommended from McGraw as a solid CD and not just radio hits was his self-titled first, which ironically had no radio hits. However, McGraw bursts onto the scene with this one. From the timeless 'Where the Green Grass Grows' to the fun of 'Hard on the Ticker' and 'You Turn Me On', this is a truly solid CD. I appreciate an artist who can put together a good CD, and from this album on, McGraw does just that. This is a must for any country fan, but especially if you like McGraw.

5 out of 5 stars The album that made Tim a really big star.......2005-05-17

Tim's career had built up momentum steadily. His first album made little impact. His second (Not a moment too soon) contained the single Indian outlaw. It sold extremely well and the next two albums (All I want) consolidated Tim's growing reputation. This album was something else again, propelling Tim's career to even greater heights. Tim began as a traditional country singer but by the time this album came along, he had moved firmly into the contemporary country music scene. You can't blame him as his debut album (a very traditional album) flopped. On the other hand, Tim's voice is country to the core so even when the backing is contemporary as on this album, there is still something of a country feel to the sound.

The album contains plenty of country hits including the title track, Where the green grass grows, For a little while, It's your love (with Faith Hill, otherwise known as Mrs McGraw) and Just to see you smile. As befitting a man at a blissfully happy time of life whose marriage was still fresh and exciting, the album is full of songs about the joys of life, particularly love. Among the tracks not already mentioned, I particularly like Hard on the ticker and I do but I don't.

This album is a masterpiece if contemporary country. Tim has had plenty of success with subsequent albums but I'll be surprised if he ever again matches the sheer brilliance of this album.

5 out of 5 stars Everywhere.......2004-03-27

If NOT A MOMENT TOO SOON and ALL I WANT established him as a country hit maker, Tim McGraw's 1997 album EVERYWHERE propelled him into superstar status. The album had a number of huge hit singles. The first single, "It's Your Love", a duet with wife Faith Hill, became a country smash and hit #1 for 6 weeks. An impressive feat. Even more impressive was when the second single "Just To See You Smile" also hit #1 for 6 weeks in a row. The title track was another #1 hit as well. The album also spun off the hits "Where The Green Grass Grows", "For A While" and "One Of These Days". It's no wonder that the album was successful, as there's so many great songs here. Some notable tracks that weren't singles include "I Do But I Don't", and "Ain't That The Way It Always Ends". Overall another great album from Tim McGraw.

It's best to think of McGraw as the Paul Revere of modern country music: dumb, derivative and too much fun to be easily dismissed. Just as the Raiders made up for their lack of sophistication with an overabundance of enthusiasm, McGraw's attractive tenor and unerring commercial instincts transform tearjerkers like "Don't Take the Girl" and "Wouldn't Want It Any Other Way" and novelty numbers like "Indian Outlaw" and "It Doesn't Get Any Countrier Than This" into hard-to-resist, low-brow entertainment. --Geoffrey Himes

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Breakthrough album still fairly traditional.......2005-02-16

After an unsuccessful debut of solidly traditional country music, Tim added a contemporary edge to his music for his second album (this one) although the overall sound is still fairly traditional. Tim's music became much more contemporary with subsequent albums, leaving the traditional stuff to Alan Jackson and others. But all that came later - this should please all but the die-hard traditionalists.

The song that gave Tim his breakthrough, Indian outlaw, is sometimes dismissed as a novelty song but it's great fun, if somewhat controversial (some say it's an insult to Native Americans).

The album opens with It don't get any countrier than this (actually about a woman), followed by Give it to me Strait, about drowning one's sorrows while playing a jukebox full of George Strait records - it mentions several song titles including Unwound, Fireman, Baby's getting good at goodbye and Fool hearted memory. These two songs should dispel any doubts about Tim's credentials as a country singer.

The rest of the album is in similar style. I particularly like Down on the farm (about having a good party), the title track (a superb ballad), Don't take the girl (a classic country ballad) and Refried dreams.

If you don't like traditional country music, you should give this a miss even if you like Tim's later music. Conversely, if you enjoy traditional country, don't ignore this just because Tim is the singer. It's a great album.

4 out of 5 stars Love it.......2004-05-08

There's such a genuineness to his songs when they sound "country" as his early stuff tended to be, and there are some great tunes on here. The ode to George Strait is amusing and Not a Moment Too Soon is too lovely for words. Great, great album. Must-buy if you're a Tim McGraw fan based on Everywhere, A Place in the Sun, Set This Circus Down, etc. The time traveling is worth it!

5 out of 5 stars Dont stop now.......2002-12-10

This was the first album i owned of Tims and now thanks to all the great music on this album I am a die hard fan of Tim McGraw

5 out of 5 stars Oh my gosh!!!!What an awful thing to say!!!.......2001-11-20

Ok well, in defense of Tim McGraw, country and myself.......I am not a sheep and I certainly liked this CD.Not his best but definitly one of his better.Whiny?I think not.I'm sorry to tell you this Scott but not everyone likes the cry in your beer stuff from 40 years ago.I'm not down on it but cmon.......you gotta be kidding...Tim McGraw is EXTREMELY talented.

5 out of 5 stars Not A Moment Too Soon.......2001-10-20

With his high lonesome yodel, and jacked-up honky tonk groove, singer Tim McGraw is the latest in a new generation of country heartthrobs to capture the imagination of today's young country fans. From the opening notes of "It Doesn't Get Any Countrier Than This"--with its skinny dipping, roll in the hay, crank my tractor sexual imagery--NOT A MOMENT TOO SOON showcases McGraw's drawlin' good time delivery on a section of party-hearty arrangements.

The key element in young McGraw's appealing country synthesis is the persistent undercurrent of chicken-fried rock'n'roll in the mix, as on the bluesy "40 Days And 40 Nights" and the pulsating "Ain't That Just Like A Dream," with its big, ringing arena gestures (descended from bands the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd). Not that McGraw can't get next to a ballad, as he demonstrates on the steel-guitar inflected "Wouldn't Want It Any Other Way" and the nostalgic "Don't Take The Girl."

But it's the hard-charging, dancing "turbo tonk" of tunes like his big hit "Indian Outlaw"--with its shifting tom-tom groove, shuffling blues jig and fiddling square dance breaks--that best captures the rowdy spirit and rough-and-ready delivery of Tim McGraw. Daddy Tug McGraw must be proud.

The party-hearty raucousness of "I Like It, I Love It" seems like a lifetime ago for Tim McGraw, whose fifth album strikes a more reflective chord. Whether ruminating on how it felt to be "Seventeen," making resolutions for "My Next Thirty Years," or probing the depths of Rodney Crowell's "Please Remember Me," his music shows the effects of marriage and maturity. Even the drinking songs, "Senorita Margarita" and "She'll Have You Back," share an older-but-wiser sentiment. While there are no duets with wife Faith Hill, her presence is evident on "My Best Friend" and "Some Things Never Change." McGraw wrote none of the songs here, but his emotional investment in the material results in an engaging collection. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars A Heartfelt Masterpiece from Country's Greatest Songman.......2006-01-26

Arguably Tim McGraw's best album to date (arguably because each one is so stellar-each album from Everywhere forward are neck and neck, albeit each excel in certain areas), a Place in the Sun finds country's greatest ear picking songs at a time he was newly in love and experiencing his greatest success to date.

This album is anchored by a number of outstanding selections (including Carry On, Somebody Must Be Prayin, You Don't Love Me Anymore, My Best Friend), however the album is made by the inclusion of Please Remember Me.

Please Remember Me is, simply, one of the greatest recordings ever made. Counted as one of the greatest 100 country songs ever written, the songs writers were country legend Rodney Crowell and Will Jennings (who wrote My Heart Will Go On for Titanic and Celine Dion). Tims performance manages to express the seemingly opposite emotions of love, forgivness, loss, and hope all at once. This combined with some of the most memorable and touching lyrics I can recall ("the days keep coming without fail" is the most concise expression of how hard it is to go on without someone you love I have ever heard) make it a song for the ages and my all time favorite song.

McGraws strength (no one is better at it) has always been his ability not only to choose great songs, but choose songs he has not written and make them his own so much that its impossible to tell he did not write them. A Place in the Sun excels in this in some way you can't quite put your finger on...for some reason you FEEL the songs just a little bit more than on any of his other albums.

Whatever it is, A Place in the Sun, like most albums, is a moment captured in time and after 6 years of listening it makes sense that, of all the great albums Tim has put out, this is the one that won CMA Album of the Year-this moment was a particularly special one.

5 out of 5 stars Tim in a mellow mood.......2005-08-22

Tim began as a traditional country singer as his debut album shows, but he gradually moved into the pop-country market. So although the credits on this album (his fifth) include fiddle and steel guitar, you won't find too much evidence of Tim's roots here. With Please remember me (a Rodney Crowell song) becoming a huge American pop hit, Tim gave clear proof of his appeal to pop audiences. Nevertheless, this is a brilliant album of its type. As ever, Tim's song selection is impeccable. He seems to know exactly what the American public wants and (just as important) what songs suit his voice.

Tim chose not to include any driving up-tempo songs on this album, focusing mainly but not entirely on romantic love songs. The original American edition of this album didn't include any duets with Faith although my UK edition includes one as the only bonus track - a remix version of It's your love.

My favorite track here (My next thirty years) finds Tim hoping to do various things in the future but you know that maybe he's not too serious - we all know how easy to put things off and only end up doing some of them. The title track is typical of the album - reflective and mellow. You might think that the title suggests an upbeat, fun song, but here the place in the sun is something that Tim wishes and hopes for. Another great song is the opening track, The trouble with never - another great song that everybody can relate to. Other great songs include Something like that, My best friend, Seventeen, Eyes of a woman and She'll have you back.

I like Tim's music whatever he sings - whether traditional or contemporary, rousing up-tempo songs or mellow love songs, he has proved his versatility. This mellow pop-country album may not please everybody but if you're into this type of music, it doesn't get much better than this.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite album from Tim McGraw.......2004-04-30

Tim McGraw's 1999 album A PLACE IN THE SUN is my favorite album from the country superstar. The songs really resound with me, and I think it's very well done and put together. "Please Remember Me" is a chilling ballad he makes his own, Patty Loveless sounds great on background vocals. In fact, the ballads are really the strongest point of the album. Songs like "Somebody Must Be Prayin For Me", "You Don't Love Me Anymore", "Some Things Never Change", "Eyes of a Woman" and the title track take listeners through various emotions of a man. The uptempos are fun such as "My Next Thirty Years", "Something Like That", "Seventeen" and more. Overall a great album from Tim McGraw!

5 out of 5 stars this album is lovely!.......2004-03-21

I've been listening to Tim Mcgraw for close to six years, and this has to be his best album so far. The lyrics are reflective and profound, a little sad, but with a dash of hopefulness. That's what makes this CD so enjoyable; he acknowledges the despair and hardships in life, but provides the listener with an uplifting message of faith and love to balance out the gloom. My only disappointments are the two upbeat tracks, something like that, and my next thirty years. Out of all fourteen, I'd have to say my two favorites are "Please Remember Me", and "A Place in the Sun", with "My Best Friend" coming in as a close third. It's true that Mcgraw has matured and gained a heap of wisdom on this album. It is, truly, a masterpiece of songcraft.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE THIS CD.......2003-08-10

Since I'm originally from New Jersey, and didn't even think about listening to country music, I bought this CD on a suggestion of a friend. Well...I'm now hooked to Tim McGraw...and country music in general! I constantly listen to this CD of his, among the others he has out as well...and I still LOVE it. He is a truly amazing artist. And to boot, I've moved to Louisiana, about 30 minutes away from where Tim McGraw was born/raised as a child and sometimes still goes to visit... Start, LA.
