This soundtrack to the movie features an astonishing array of blues artists from three generations. Recorded during one long night at NYC's Radio City Music Hall on Feb. 7, 2003, the electricity is in the air and on stage. While it may not have been the finest blues show in history, the collection of founding fathers such as David "Honeyboy" Edwards, Buddy Guy, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Larry Johnson, Hubert Sumlin, Solomon Burke, and the ubiquitous B.B. King along with their spiritual offspring (Gregg Allman, John Fogerty, and Steven Tyler) and some usual suspects like Bonnie Raitt, Robert Cray, and Keb' Mo', makes it arguably the most significant blues session ever captured on film.
Beginning acoustic, the double disc builds momentum and volume as we hear the blues mutate to electric and finally hip-hop with Chuck D. exploding on a rap version of John Lee Hooker's "Boom Boom." The crackling house band led by drummer Steve Jordan provides foundation for gritty, roof-raising pieces like the unusual collaboration between former New York Doll David Johansen and guitarist Sumlin on Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor." Not all of the film's music is included but there are enough magnificent performances for established blues fans and to entice those first experiencing the genre's abundant riches. --Hal Horowitz
Customer Reviews:
excellent!!.......2007-03-23
Great to see so many talented artists come together. Awesome music and rhythyms. Also great to listen to while working out!
Great DVD.......2007-03-10
This autobiography of the blues shows the past and the present of a music steeped in African American culture and rich musical history. Legends of the past perform live with the greats of the past decade presenting the musical form at its fullest potential. The movie incorporates benhind the scenes footage and rare clips of blues artist such as Son House, Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson crafting the art of Blues music. Performances like India Ari singing Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday and Guy's rendition of Cant be Satisfied by Muddy Waters, inspire me to watch them over and over again. Lighting in a Bottle is more than just an event; it is a celebration of the life and breath of the music that has inspired countless other genres and has captured the emotion of represion and pentence. Lighting in a body is a journey worth taking.
The perfect CD to Drive too!.......2006-08-19
This CD is the actual performance of the DVD, which I also have and play at least once a week. You can't possibly get bored with this and you won't want to miss one song. However I highly recommend you get the 2 disc companion, so you know the history behind the making of this well produced and presented concert. Abosolutely genius!!!!!!!
Great variety of artists.......2006-08-14
This event certainly had a star studded lineup and there are many highlights with Buddy Guy, Gregg Allman, Warren Haynes. Angelique Kidjo, BB King among the many winning performances. The only negative is a poor rap antiwar piece towards the end that just isn't a celebration of the blues or the many diverse artists that produce the blues. There may be a forum for this but this ain't it! The many highlights drown out this so 4.5 Stars.
If you enjoy the blues, you need this cd.......2006-03-26
Great music, good mix of artists. Could have done without a rapper trying to turn "boom boom" into an anti-war statement.

Sista Monica's comeback CD tells it all!.......2005-09-29
Ohmygosh! Reading the insert, I learned that Sista Monica was absent for two years battling and beating a difficult cancer. Sista Monica wrote amazingly inspirational songs about her story in this album, many autobiographical. Can't Keep a Good Woman Down, Cookin' with Grease, It's Good to be Alive!, Surrender to Love. Amazing and hot music! I found myself dancing wildly in my livingroom, by myself, and then bought all her other albums (this was my first). The insert also told me she is donating 10% of the sales to healingjourneys.org, whose trademark is "Cancer as a turning point, from surviving to thriving!" Maybe the Powers that Be healed this woman so she can continue to inspire people for a long time to come! I have since read about her winning audiences over immediately, as she has sung all over the world. Treat yourself to this one. And you'll help people in real need too. Wow.

Every jazz guitarist NEEDS this, & that's the Gospel truth!!.......2004-12-16
If you are a jazz guitar player you NEED to hear this cd, and that is the GOSPEL TRUTH!!! Sister Rosetta Tharpe sings in a mannered preachy style, with a sophistocated blues feeling, yet she plays electric guitar in a similar fashion as Charlie Christian. This cd finds the singer playing solo guitar and singing Gospel standards live. ESSENTIAL jazz guitar album.

Joy in the Camp The Gaither Gospel Series.......2004-02-10
I have only just ordered the cd of this, but have owned the tape for several years. My husband and i absolutely love this particular gospel tape more than all the other tapes we own. I searched and searched to find it with no luck until I contacted Amazon. I should have looked here first. Thank you Amazon for allowing us to finally have our favorite at long last. We thought since it is not a new one we would not be able to have it on cd.
This is an uplifting, soul singing album!!.......1999-07-16
I think I've heard every album that Bill Gaither has ever produced. This one was one of the first five "Homecoming" albums I heard. You can't stay down in the "mully-grubs" when you listen to this fabulous collection of joyful songs.

Joined by an all-star cast of friends and fellow recording artists, the Dixie Hummingbirds, arguably the most powerful jubilee and traditional-style black gospel quartet of the century, issue Music in the Air in celebration of their 70-year reign. Traipsing across stylistic musical boundaries, the still formidable group pushes the envelope with reconfigured arrangements of traditionals such as "How Great Thou Art" and "Come Ye Disconsolate," the former featuring a powerful a cappella lead by Wynonna Judd in juxtaposition to the interlocked harmony of the 'Birds. While not the dead-on quality of its prime-time recordings, Music in the Air is testament to the quartet's undeniable might and influence in both the sacred and secular worlds of music. Exciting contributions include Mavis Staples's enthused lead on "I Need Thee," a collaboration with the boisterous Shirley Caesar on "Praise Him," and Paul Simon's updated "Love Me Like a Rock," the original hit on which the 'Birds sang backup in 1973. --Paige La Grone

Music That Tells the Story is the companion to spiritual guru Iyanla Vanzant's self-help bestseller of the same name and incorporates the principles laid out in the book. Blending spiritual wisdom with common sense, the author tells us how to come out of the "basement" and live vibrantly even while we're waiting to manifest our wildest dreams of love and connectedness. Vanzant calls this "the meantime"--a place one will revisit periodically through life's unfolding. Interspersing smooth inspirational R&B tunes with bits of juicy text read by the author, the disc espouses nuggets such as "Love doesn't hurt; falling into the traps we set for love makes us hurt ourselves." The songs, some cowritten and performed by Vanzant, are both old and new, and are sung by a group of artists including Kelly Price, Yolanda Adams, and Faith Evans. Successful in its mission, the recording is affirmation for a life fully lived in the absence of perfection. --Paige La Grone

"Anger is a learned behavior, you weren't born this way." - Free (track #18).......2006-04-27
5 Stars is not NEARLY enough to rate this magnificant cd. It's not just music but its spiritual and mental awakening at its very BEST. Each and Every Song on this CD is BEAUTIFUL and MEANINGFUL... at the least! And the interludes frmo Ms. Iyanla Vanzant are too valuable to put into words.... Anyone who knows hurt, anyone who knows confusion, anyone who knows pain and anyone who KNOWS they want Peace will find total joy in owning this disk. If you listen, you will be heard... meaning, if you listen to what she says, your inner most self will be heard... she touches a part of you that you neglect in so many ways... it's just wonderful... I heard this cd probably back when it first came out and I have been in love with it ever since... In fact, passing it along to my Mother, my best friend, and recommending it to anyone I feel would truly gain something from this remarkable delivery... I would recommend this cd to anyone who is trying to get thru life with their head up and their heart open... In these days, it's hard to live with an open heart because there is so much pain evolving but for anyone who wants some spirtual feeding, This is a full course.
Beautiful.......2005-10-15
This CD is great. You have to truly "listen" to it to realize it is so true. Every emotion and feeling is true....
I LOVE THIS CD.
INSPIRATION.......2005-05-11
This woman is so blessed. She has great music and beautiful lessons to think about and learn in each track. I listen to it everyday. I especially like number 10 with her and Yolanda Adams. It gives me strength when I listen to it. My whole family loves it!!!
In the Meantime.......2001-12-11
Excellent. Truth put to music. A rare find. I just love it.
There is a lesson in the music!.......2001-09-27
For anyone struggling with relationships, this is the CD for you! Most of us have to be "told" when to take care of self! Play this CD as you are preparing to start your day, and I can assure you that your self-confidence will be more secure, your self-esteem will be raised and you will not allow any relationship, whether personal or professional to make you feel "less than." One of the best "self-help" lessons available.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Riding on top of their funky, blues-rock instrumental combination, the Holmes Brothers work vocal magic here, digging vigorously into their customary gospel roots. Rich, soulful harmonies and a moving blend of grit and sincerity give Wendell and Sherman Holmes and Popsy Dixon their distinction and power. Their voices suggest depths of religious conviction that get added punch from the band's kicking intensity. "Jesus Is the Way," "Jesus Got His Hooks in Me," "Thank You, Jesus," and "King Jesus Will Roll All Burdens Away" reveal the primary lyrical subject matter of the songs, and they are done with reverence and conviction. Bob Dylan's "Man of Peace," Ben Harper's "I Want to Be Ready," and Gamble-Huff's "Love Train" are also given the Holmes treatment: throaty, heartfelt harmonies layered amid rocking church organ, shimmering guitars, and rich backbeats. And Wendell Holmes's tasty guitar is always around to give the tunes a rockish feel. This is, though, a well-recorded, loving tribute to the gospel music heritage, and the Holmes Brothers prove themselves worthy carriers of that rich tradition. --Wally Shoup
Customer Reviews:
An atheist raving about a fantastic collection of gospel?!?!.......2004-02-17
Don't pray for me. I don't believe that there is a God but I have no interest in convincing others I am right.
However, I am here to tell you that whether you are secular or religious, if you like 'real' blues this album is a must-have. This is one extraordinarily talented group of hard-driving bluesmen passionately driving home their message of faith, hope, and love. These guys are the real deal!
Relentless and Righteous.......2003-05-29
The Holmes Brothers will make your feet move and force you into their way of grooving. "Speaking in Tongues" is another fine set that showcases their ability to lay down some mean gospel-tinged music. Whether infusing new life into Dylan's call out of Satan in Man of Peace or churning through both original and traditional tracks, this trio proves they have the chops. (Ben Harper beware: these guys have stamped their names all over their versions of your Homeless Child and I Want to Be Ready.)
Wendell Holmes plays out front on keyboards and guitars, adding flourishes and twists and grace to the tunes. His brother Sherman on bass and "Popsy" Dixon on drums offer counterpoint and power and nuance. This concoction may be gospel-funk at heart, but the blues and rock are part of the mixture also.
The soulful, smoky vocals soar over the music, and each principal takes turns on the mike. The backing vocals work of the Precious Three (Joan Osborne, Catherine Russell, and Maydie Miles) deserves more than a nod, and when all six lift their voices, it's enough to send shivers down the spine of any heathen.
When you listen to this music, the honesty and humility of hard-working, talented musicians shines through. There is no ego burnishing or posturing that mars way too much of what passes for music. Go now and get this CD. Play it for your friends and your enemies, too. They will thank you.
Gospel and the blues--a great combination here.......2003-04-21
The Holmes Brothers are for lovers of the blues, of gospel, or just of melodic and wonderful singing. I believe this is the first gospel CD that I own. Its strong blues influence and its upbeat music (and words) should make this CD a valuable addition to anyone's collection. Enjoy!
Just Not a Holmes Brothers Fan.......2002-09-25
This is the 2nd Holmes Brothers cd I bought based on the effusive reviews and brief excerpts on Amazon. I have been disappointed twice. My complaint is with the material, it just didn't move me. My recommendation is that you find someplace to listen to this CD in detail before purchasing. You may love it, I didn't.
Finally!!!.......2002-01-29
I am a Christian. I make no bones or apologies about that. As a matter of fact, I am on staff at a church. But usually, each time I hear a contemporary Christian group or singer hit the scene I usually want to do one of two things: 1) apologize to my more secular and humanistic friends for the drivel we've been listening to for the past 20 years, and, 2) puke.
BUT NO LONGER.
The Holmes Brothers have given me something that I am incredibly proud of: a music for my faith that isn't afraid to get gritty. For so long we as Believers have been accepting the pap that the major Christian labels have given us that it has almost become a mark of orthodoxy. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Sandi Patti, Michael W., and Steven CC as a prime examples. We dare not speak up and call it marketed much less boring or run the risk of being labeled as unregenerate.
Long ago on Saturday Night Live, there was a skit called the "Young Caucasians". For decades that skit has epitomized Christian music for me. It can only be accessable if you are a young white, rich kid who grew up in church. So much for living in the real world filled with degredation and sin.
The Holmes Bros. sound like, feel like, smell like, stink like the real world only with a Heavenly message. And isn't that what Christianity is to be all about?
I don't know anything about these guys. All I know is that there is finally a Christian group that I can get excited about rather than being embarrassed by.

From Country Church To Rock.......2007-04-20
The title song of the this album is a perfect map of the transformation of the roots of traditional gospel into rock'n'roll and beyond.
In the opening moments, Sam Cooke moves from delicious Soul Stirrer classic stylings to the underpinnings of the Elvis Presley music transformation of the 50's which sustain the center of the performance.
Than, in the final minute of the song, he anticipates the relentless intensity of 70's reggae-rock fusion moments such as Toots and the Maytals in songs like "Pressure Drop" and finally concludes with a flat-out full-energy performance comparable to any of the great 80's and 90's rock vocals you'd care to name.
One of the top 100 classic vocals in all of 20th century popular music.
Fantasic CD.......2007-04-12
This is an awesome CD that showcases an incredible aray of talent. Sam Cooke is at his absolute best, and anyone buying this product will be infinitely pleased.
Peace in the Valley has several old favorites.......2007-04-03
This CD has many of the favorite songs Sam Cooke sang with the Soul Stirrers. At seventy years of age, I enjoy singing along with these songs I began listening to when I was in senior high school.

The idea that recordings exist of bluesy, intense gospel fueled by and starring the electric steel guitar might strike one as strange. But that very thing has transpired for decades in the Jewel and Keith Dominions of the Church of the Living God, and, as this mid-'90s recording demonstrates, the results are brilliant. Sonny Treadway displays the agile virtuosity of Chet Atkins on "At the Cross" and Glenn Lee's mournful, nimble, dulcet licks on "Call Him by His Name" recall B.B. King at his fiercest. However, such facile comparisons really do a disservice to this vital sound; none of this music really resembles anything else. Particular highlights of this satisfying set's 20 tracks are the 3 sublime contributions by Willie Eason. The elderly Eason may not display the liquid bravado of others here, but his songs possess unbounded soul. His original composition "Franklin D. Roosevelt, a Poor Man's Friend" is a wonderful example of both topical material and eulogy in gospel music. His songs are sung in a baritone, preach-singing style and the playing juxtaposes strummed chords with eerie, long, looping notes that seem to hang in the air forever. The section of live religious services by Treadway, Henry Nelson, and Aubrey Ghent are stomping fun at its most sanctified. Treadway's "This Is a Holy Church" even approaches the unbridled Holy Ghost stomp of street musician Rev. Louis Overstreet. --Mike McGonigal

The Truth Shall Set You Free!.......2004-03-17
Mention the steel guitar and most likely you will get images of the Hapa Haole music of Hawaii in the 30s, or the twangy sounds of hard country. But there's another side of the steel guitar, one that is not as well known, but is perhaps one of the most amazing roots traditions still alive in this country, the black Pentecostal tradition of the pedal and laptop steel guitar.
The sacred tradition of steel guitar playing reaches back to the late 20s and early 30s and is tied to the history of the Holiness churches, particularly the Keith and Jewel Dominions of the Church of the Living God, headquartered in Northern Florida. Holiness churches are deeply Pentecostal churches, taking as their primary spiritual tradition the "Baptism of the Holy Spirit" which they trace to the second chapter of Acts. Music in this tradition is more than just a pretty decoration for the service. It is a sacrament in itself, serving to open congregants to the power of the Holy Spirit. True Pentecostal music, whether in traditionally white or traditionally black churches is characterized by an infectious rhythmic quality and an ecstatic lyricism based on the spirituals of the south.
In the Church of the Living God, the steel guitar is the primary instrument of the worship service, replacing the more common electronic organ of most gospel music. This disc presents music from some of the Church's finest musicians. The first 9 selections are mostly instrumentals. Each practitioner approaches his instrument differently, from the almost vocal inflections of Sonny Treadway, to the more modern, jazzy improvisations of Glenn Lee, the youngest musician on this disc. Particularly amazing are the three cuts by Willie Eason, the granddaddy of the steel tradition. He uses his guitar as a backup choir to his own folksy vocals, but intersperse them with tasty fills and blues licks. Most interesting is his original composition, Franklin D. Roosevelt, which is a latterday example of the historical ballad, a form of traditional song which interprets current events through the prism of faith.
The second part of the disc is the real killer, the live services. Recorded in churches throughout Florida, these cuts offer generous selections of congregational singing, lead by the steel guitar. Many of the selections represent "praise" music, songs of increasingly fast tempo that are meant to raise the spirits...and boy do they ever. Sonny Treadway's This is a Holy Church and Aubrey Ghent's Praise Music are so sanctified that you almost levitate listening to them. The music isn't polished, but that's essential to it's spirit. The music flows without restraint. This music is as wild and free as any that I've ever heard. It is truly spirit-filled!
So if you are a fan of real down-home Gospel, or a fan of roots music, this CD is a must have. But it is also recommended to adventurous people into edgy jazz or other forms of alternative music. Certainly music like this goes a long way toward helping people understand the spirituality of movements like the avant-garde jazz movement. This is music of the Spirit and as any Pentecostal will tell you...the Spirit frees!
Fascinating, unique music.......2003-01-04
A thoroughly captivating collection of one of the most obscure offshoots of the blues/gospel music axis, this disc collects 20 tracks of African-American gospel music as performed on electric steel guitars. The liner notes trace the style back to the 1930s, when steel guitars came into vogue; the performances are by a handful of contemporary performers who come from a Pentecostal church in Florida, where the tradition is still very much alive. Blues, R&B and gospel have always had an interesting Saturday night/Sunday morning interrelationship, and these recordings inject a distinctive "white" country flavor into that mix. This is one of Arhoolie's biggest-selling and best received releases in recent years and when you check it out, you'll understand why. Cool stuff. (There have also been several follow-ups and solo albums featuring the same artists on here, but this is the disc that, to me, seems most magical.)
Spiritual Sincerity.......2001-04-07
I grew up in North Florida and the sounds and faith behind the words of this beautiful album are a revelation and a confirmation both. NPR uses bits of it as bridge music on their "All Things Considered" and "Morning Edition." I think it is because of the essential purity and sweetness of the music. "Little Church on the Hill" is something celestial. It evokes heaven, a place that exists only in time, not on a map. I don't listen to this every day, it is too good for that. I just listen to it in moments, and those moments, like this collection, are too lovely to convey.
FANTASTIC !.......2000-04-01
Being raised in the pentecostal church (Mt.Calvary and House of God keith Dominion). This cd is a reminder of the church services in Mt.Airy, NC. with my uncle on the steele and sweet sounds of the steele, giving direction and inspiration to the church service. GLenn Lee is remarkable, the way he blends country and blues with tradional steele playing. His interpretation of "Pass me not. oh gentle savior" is without comparison, an old gospel favorite, with a country twist. Totally original! Also his own "Joyful sounds" has the uncanny imprint of his uncle bishop Harisson, with a nice twist. Nothing can compare to the old favorite "Franklin D Roosevelt,A poor man's friend", by Willie Eason. Let's not forget the foot stomping "Live religious services on the cd. IF you don't get uplifted by these selections from both Jewel and Kieth Dominions check your pulse 'cause something is definitely wrong. Believe me you will love this cd and be uplifted.
