Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Cowboy Singer.......2004-06-30

One of the best benefits of the CD revolution is that so many recordings "lost" since the 78 era are now reappearing. As a result, music lovers are discovering great singers and players who somehow slipped through the LP reissue cracks. Marc Williams is one of these lost pioneers. During the late 1920s and early 1930s Williams recorded fine versions of many standard cowboy songs and then disappeared. This CD brings together what has to be the bulk of his recordings and liner notes containing the most information available on him. Williams was a Texan, probably had some real experience as a cowboy, and eventually moved to the midwest where he worked as an entertainer and later became a lawyer. He eventually returned to Texas. As a singer, Williams is a missing link between the authentic cowboy singers with a rough style and the crooning of Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. His voice is very much like Rogers, if we need to compare him to someone. He doesn't yodel. Williams' gently rapped version of "Sioux Warriors" is the definitive treatment of that classic. These are fine recordings by a singer who languished in obscurity too long. An essential CD for cowboy music lovers.
