5 out of 5 stars Some old favourites, and some unfamiliar, enjoyable voices and songs.......2007-03-11

This compilation has the usual songs that immediately bring the name of composer Victor Herbert to mind - Ah, sweet mystery of life, I'm falling in love with someone and Tramp, tramp, tramp - with such well known voices as those of Macdonald, Eddy and the famous tenors, Richard Crooks, Richard Tauber and Charles Kullmann.

Perhaps of greater interest to many listeners will be the relatively seldom heard artists, such as John McHugh, Florence Easton and Florence George. All three have very pleasant voices and aural personalities.

It is a somewhat mixed delight to hear Amelita Galli-Curci, John McCormack, Alma Gluck and Richard Werrenrath in recordings from the acoustic era. My personal favourite from that group is Galli-Cutci's charming version of A kiss in the dark.

Altogether, a well chosen mixture of the familiar and the out of the way, carefully and well re-recorded.

4 out of 5 stars Lola Lola Flies Over The Rainbow!.......2002-10-19

I remember going to a Nana Mouskouri with my ex when we were both students in Germany. It seemed like a kind of fun, campy thing to do. And actually, it was just that--fun, a little campy--if not downright kitschy. Nana, of course, is one of those international pop stars who record in every conceivable language (except, maybe, Icelandic and Mandarin). To her credit, she's one of the few who has actually made a dent in the U.S. market, and she has done more for eyewear fashion than anyone this side of Sally Jessy Raphael.

But is she any good? Well, yes, she is a very talented pop singer. For a non-native speaker, she actually interprets idiomatic English-language material pretty well. But there are limits to that talent, as more than a couple of the songs here demonstrate. The most awkward moments are the two duets with Harry Belafonte. Belafonte, completely at home with the language, adopts an almost conversational style well-suited to his husky voice. Mouskouri, by comparison, sounds stiff and sticks to singing "pretty" rather interpreting the lyric. It is, quite simply, the difference between a singer working in his native language versus one who's struggling in another.

When she tackles "The Summer Knows," she does fairly well, but for me the definitive version of that song will always be the one by the late, lamented Nancy LaMott. LaMott, who combined this song with "Summer Me Winter Me," was expert at getting behind the lyric. As a superb cabaret artist, that was her forte. Mouskouri tries valiantly, hits all the notes, but she cannot inject it with the wit and life-wisdom that LaMott does so effortlessly. Of course, if they were singing some idiomatic Greek chanson, Nana would trump Nancy--no nagging doubt.

It's also fair to say that a tongue twister like "The Windows of Your Mind" almost completely eludes her. But the only glaring linguistic gaffe occurs in "As Time Goes By." Instead of the correct (and sensible) lines, "Woman needs man/and man must have his mate," Nana warbles something that sounds like , "Woman nids man/ and man just have his mate," which someone in the recording studio should have caught and declared that it made NO SENSE WHATSOVER! But the CD was produced by Nana herself and someone named Andre Chapelle, so I'm guessing that there was no one on hand with a complete mastery of the Queen's English (or Humphrey Bogart's for that matter).

A project albm like this(the subtitle is "Great Songs from the Movies") allows a recording artist an opportunity to record material closely associated with other artists with some impunity. Some might argue that she borrows too much of Bette Midler's phrasing on "Wing Beneath My Wings"--although what she actually borrows are the textual embroiderings Midler threw in that weren't actually part of the original lyrics.

And there will be those who will insist that no other singer should even attempt "Over the Rainbow," "Falling In Love Again," or even "The Way We Were" lest they be guilty of sacrilege. But, hey, if it's all part of an overall "tribute to the movies"... Actually, Mouskouri does reasonable justice to all three. She doesn't try to imitate any of the original singers in any way, and while she won't make anyone forget Garland or Dietrich, I'm sure there are those who will prefer her more understated version of "The Way We Were" to Streisand's socco-boffo interpretation. Me, I never cared that much for the song one way or the other. But the capper is with the capper. That is to say, the last track, "High Noon," is just grand. If "Mousaka Westerns" ever become a viable genre, Nana Mouskouri should be on EVERY soundtrack.

Seriously. This is fun. And good of kind! I feel less guiltily pleasured when I listen to Nana in a foreign language (sort of the way that I find I CAN listen to Celine Dion in French), but everyone should own at least one Nana Mouskouri record--and if you want her in English, this one may be ideal.

4 out of 5 stars Donýt let ýThe Lady With The Glassesý escape you.......2000-07-30

Nana Mouskouri is my benchmark against which I measure other contemporary singers. Her voice is lower than soprano (perhaps "mezzo-soprano): it's clear, rich, resonant and bright. Her tone is "breathy." I believe this feature gives her an "intimate" quality, but hey, I'm just a guy. On Falling In Love Again, Mouskouri covers fifteen movie songs from the past four decades: this is a "real" album and not a compilation of previous material. The CD features the elegant Michel Legrand Orchestra with a chorus that sounds like 100 singers. Set in the middle of a full orchestra and massive choir, some soloists might get buried (or worse - compete against the awesome sound), but not Mouskouri. Her intensity, her ability to project over the orchestra, is exceptional. Although Legrand's arrangements are grandiose, Mouskouri dominates center stage and is clearly the focal-point of the album. Again, it's her voice. Without "flaming" other popular female singers, everything Mouskouri does, she does right. Listen to the way she effortlessly shifts from one tone quality to another without "belting" or breaking into a falsetto (Autumn Leaves, How Do You Keep The Music Playing). `My Own True Love' and `Beauty And The Beast' are impressive examples of her flexibility and agility (I'd use the term "bel canto," but it might frighten away all but opera fans).

On an emotional level, the compositions are "love" songs from "mushy" movies. `You Are The Wind Beneath My Wings' is a poignant song for anyone who has ever worshiped an older brother or sister. The dynamics of `My Own True Love' radiate with Mouskouri's confidence. `The Windmills Of Your Mind' is haunting and majestic. Without the slightest hint of a temperamental "prima donna," the voice of Nana Mouskouri is simply "The Voice." Don't let "The Lady With The Glasses" escape you.

Technical Note: Why PolyGram Records does not use the SPARS code "DDD" is beyond me. The booklet mentions "digitally recorded and mixed," and I suspect this is a true DDD recording. Mouskouri's voice is usually close-miked, and quite capable of over-saturating analog equipment. It doesn't happen here (My Own True Love, Beauty And The Beast). The CD is an outstanding source for demonstrating high-end audio equipment. Mouskouri's "bell clear" voice "rings" (resonating at 2,500-3,000 Hz), and the dynamic range of tracks such as `Somewhere Over The Rainbow' is enormous.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......1999-04-19

An extremely well chosen collection of songs sung by a fabulous voice.

What a voice! Nana's angelic voice is so soothing that if you put this wonderful CD on at the end of a tiring day you'll just forget every bad incident that took place ealier. It just sweeps you to the limits of relaxation.

5 out of 5 stars great singers, great songs.......2006-05-03

Some of broadway's best singers are on this album, including Brian Stokes Mitchell, Debbie Gravitte, Marin Mazzie, and Rebecca Luker. (The cd is worth buying for Rebecca Luker's song alone!) The songs are beautifully orchestrated and sung. Most are light hearted and fun, leaving me with a good feeling when listening.
If you're a fan of broadway showtunes, I believe you'll enjoy this album.

This is one of the greatest instrumental talents I've heard in years. This cd has some of my all-time favorite movie tunes including 'Moon River', 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow', and a very beautiful version of 'My Heart Will Go On'. This is the actual band that played in the 1997 movie Titanic and I'm truly thankful that they made this recording for everyone to enjoy. I'll cherish it for years to come. Thank you!

4 out of 5 stars Familiar music with good performance.......1999-10-03

This CD contains many familiar music from films and the performance of the musicians is very good particularly track 16. I also find the music very relax and enjoyable and can bring the memory of those films if one has ever seen them.

The German-accented vocals of Marlene Dietrich are an acquired taste, for sure, but Falling in Love Again does a good job at showing her diverse output: from the obvious ("Falling in Love Again," made famous again in 1998 for a Mercedes TV ad campaign, and "Illusions") to the downright strange (Dietrich's throaty interpretation of "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine"). The career of the sultry songstress is all too easy to typecast, but the reality behind these tunes was anything but simplistic. She was a struggling actress who used her physical charms to compensate for her thespian shortcomings; she entertained Allied troops during the Second World War--singing, playing the musical saw, and earning herself a Medal of Freedom from the U.S. War Department; she even worked with a young Burt Bacharach on a pair of singles for Dot Records. Once Dietrich sings a show tune, you'll never hear it the same way again, and her renditions of these tunes--everything from Cole Porter's "You Do Something to Me" to Freidrich Hollander's dark "Black Market"--are memorable, to say the least. --Jason Verlinde

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Some old favorites.......2006-02-24

These selections cover her English language recordings made after she came to America, with some old favorites represented. Maybe this should have been a two-disc album, to include her earlier work in German.

4 out of 5 stars Great start, uneven finish.......2003-09-16

Dietrich's heavily accented vocals definitely require some getting used to, but they're also what make her performances so unique and evocative of their era. Whatever her shortcomings in English and French pronunciations, Dietrich could purr sensuous lines like "My past that makes you hate me/makes you love me too" or "I gently untie the past" like no one else, and she offers up dozens of them here. The first eleven songs on this album sound like the ultimate romantic World War II movie soundtrack, from the joyous nihilism of "The Boys in the Backroom" to more bittersweet ballads like "Illusions" and the title track, and straight up love songs like "You've Got That Look" and "Symphonie." Tucked neatly into the mix is the more subversive "Black Market," which is open to interpretation and then some, and the classic "Lili Marlene," with which Dietrich reportedly brought soldiers on both sides of the lines to tears in her USO shows during the war. The fuzzy but surprisingly consistent sound quality (the recording dates range from 1939-1957) and distinctive orchestration add to the sense of atmosphere, to the point where you can almost imagine being in the audience in a battle-scarred nightclub in wartime Berlin, with Marlene and the band on stage just a few feet away.

But the collection stumbles badly with what I'm guessing were the B-sides to her two 1957 singles. The awkward rock-and-roll arrangements of "Near You" and "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine" were originally released on the same record label that gave us Pat Boone, and they sound every bit the part. (Ironically, the flip sides of those singles, "Another Spring, Another Love" and "I May Never Go Home Anymore," are terrific.) The collection recovers its footing somewhat with the two final songs from 1965. "If He Swing by the String" and "Such Trying Times" don't quite measure up to the glory of the earlier recordings, but they're a nice enough ending to the album and certainly more in keeping with its overall style.

I suspect the folks at MCA were aiming for a sampler of Dietrich's singing career regardless of context and how well the songs fit together. This would be a five star collection if they had opted for consistency rather than completeness. But in the era of skip-buttons, it's still worthy.

5 out of 5 stars The best one.......2002-06-29

The best one to buy if you must have only one. I own many but love this compilation because the emotion of the originals is there and the sound quality is very good, which is something that cannot be said for all Dietrich CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Good selection of Dietrich's recordings from the 40s and 50s.......1999-08-05

It's worth it just to get "Falling in Love Again" and "Lili Marlene", but there are other good ones here too. The "Live in London" CD is the other one I'd recommend: between the two of them, all the classic Dietrich songs are there. Yes, she's an acquired taste, definitely one of a kind, and they don't make 'em like that anymore. The remastering is quite good on most tracks, and the mono sound is very atmospheric.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not the best!.......1999-07-20

This CD is fun but these are old recordings so the sound quality isn't super. I recommend the Die Grossen Erfolge [IMPORT] Marlene Dietrich for the real music lover that wants the most from Marlene more.

      Album Description

MARILYN MONROE - SYN 057 - UPC - 874757005720 - B000JMK6W6 "Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend" CD with "Home Town Story" DVD CD with bonus DVD Feature Film
Marilyn Monroe never actually recorded an album in her lifetime, but most of her movies featured her singing at least one song. And so it was inevitable that after her untimely death in August 1962 at age 36, someone would compile those songs and put them out on record. Monroe is the perfect Hollywood caricature of the sexy mama, every syllable she sings practically dripping with desire. Fellow pinup queen Jane Russell joins her on "When Love Goes Wrong," from 1953's "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes".
The closing track on this disc is the notorious "Happy Birthday" that Monroe sang to President John F. Kennedy at Madison Square Garden for his 45th birthday party in May 1962.

Home Town Story - 1951 - Directed by Arthur Pierson -DVD
Blake Washburn blames manufacturer MacFarland for his defeat in the race for re-election to the state legislature. He takes over his uncle's newspaper to take on big business as an enemy of the people. Miss Martin (Marilyn Monroe) works in the "Herald" newspaper office. When tragedy strikes, Blake must re-examine his views. <

JUDY GARLAND - SYN 057 - UPC 874757005522 - B000JMK6V2 "Over the Rainbow" CD with "Till The Clouds Roll By" DVD CD with bonus DVD Feature Film
What you hear on this disc is early Judy, her voice big, sweet and a bit sentimental, long before it curdled into a self-parody. Other celebrities pop up frequently as duet partners including Bing Crosby Gene Kelly, and Fred Astaire.

Till the Clouds Roll By (1946) - Directed by Richard Whorf
Light bio-pic of American Broadway pioneer Jerome Kern, featuring renditions of the famous songs from his musical plays by contemporary stage artists, including a condensed production of his most famous: 'Showboat' . Also includes performances by June Allyson, Kathryn Grayson, Van Heflin, Lena Horne, Van Johson, Dinah Shore, Frank Sinatra, Cyd Charisse and others.

JANE RUSSELL - SYN 058 - UPC 874757005829 - B000JMK6VM "Pamper Me" CD with "The Outlaw" DVD CD with bonus DVD Feature Film
Jane Russell had a decent voice, and in her movie-star capacity, she sang a lot of tunes, including "Am I in Love?" and "Wing Ding Tonight" with Bob Hope and several selections from 1953's "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes".
It may come as news to a few folks that Russell, was a devout Christian, and that she actually formed a gospel vocal group in the '50s. Her1954 album, "Make a Joyful Noise Unto the Lord", and subsequent single, "Give Me That Old Time Religion" are the sources of the surprising devotional music you'll hear interspersed throughout this disc.

The Outlaw - 1943 - Directed by Howard Hughes
The Outlaw was filmed in 1940 and only released in 1943 after lengthy wrangling with the Hays censorship office over its provocative nature.
Newly appointed sheriff Pat Garrett is pleased when his old friend Doc Holliday arrives in Lincoln, New Mexico on the stage. Doc is trailing his stolen horse, and it is discovered in the possession of Billy the Kid. In a surprising turnaround, Billy and Doc become friends. This causes the friendship between Doc and Pat to cool. The odd relationship between Doc and Billy grows stranger when Doc hides Billy at his girl (played by Jane Russell), Rio's, place after Billy is shot. She falls for Billy, although he treats her very badly. Interaction between these four is played out against an Indian attack before a final showdown reduces the group's number.

MARLENE DIETRICH - SYN 056 - UPC 874757005621 - B000JMK6VC "Falling in Love Again" CD with "The Blue Angel" DVD CD with Bonus DVD Feature Film
First and foremost, Marlene Dietrich (1901-1992) was a movie star. But her casual singing style was nearly as important a factor in that stardom as her acting talent. Her 1930 breakthrough role in "The Blue Angel" was as a cabaret singer/femme fatale named Lola, and one of the numbers she sang in that movie, "Falling in Love Again," became a major hit, serving as Dietrich's unofficial theme song for the rest of her life.
The songs on this recording are the classic original recordingsthat helped make the one time Maria Magdalene Dietrich von Losch both a film legend and a cabaret sensation. -Mac Randall
The Blue Angel - 1930 - Directed by Josef von Sternberg
This is the story about the infatuation, drama and ultimate tragedy of Immanuel Rath, an old bachelor and a teacher at the town's high school. When he discovers that some of his pupils often go into a speakeasy, The Blue Angel, to visit a dancer, Lola (played by Dietrich) he comes there to confront them. But he becomes infatuated with Lola, revisits the next night ... and his life changes dramatically.

        5 out of 5 stars Pure Energy.......2000-09-17

What an incredible recording! What energy, what a fantastic voice! The songs, many of which are rarely recorded, are presented in a wonderful upbeat and stylish mood. It's almost impossible not to love this CD. Her tributes to the greats of the silver screen are very witty and yet not overly campy. Judy manages to almost one up Carmen Miranda, with her Carmen Tribute. I must say I never really liked the song "Thanks alot, but no thanks" until I heard Judy's version. This CD will leave you exhausted but with lots of happy memories. It will also leave you wishing that Judy Kaye recorded more often!!

        Album Description

Percy Faith was the master of distilling the best of melodies and in this collection from 1958, Percy rescues us from the images that Victor Herbert melodies tend to evoke - the operetta, and the "erstwhile lady singing (belting out?) Herbert tunes at the piano." With this in mind, Percy's early stereo spectacular brings us the best of the Victor Herbert tunes - with the grand voice of the orchestra to bring out the beauty of each song - twenty-three Victor Herbert songs in this collection! (Bill Halvorsen)

        Album Description

        Customer Reviews:

        1 out of 5 stars Inauthentic Herbert/authentic Percy Faith.......2006-09-03

If you love the Percy Faith orchestral style, you will certainly
enjoy this typical example. The disc is full and the selections are numerous and varied, including characteristic pieces, operetta
excerpts, and even a couple of excerpts from one of Herbert's
        grand operas.
BUT - if you're primarily interested in the music of Victor Herbert, then the advice has to be to avoid this seemingly tempting item. The combination of anachronistic arrangements, altered harmonies, and orchestrations foreign to anything Herbert would have imagined or countenanced ends by falsifying the charm and character of Herbert's music. In essence it's more like "1950's Fantasies Loosely Based on Certain Herbert Themes."

        1 out of 5 stars disappointment.......2006-08-14

This is a very poor rendering of the music of Victor Herbert. I am very disappointed in it and would not have ordered it if I realized that there were no vocals.

5 out of 5 stars "music giants come together ~ Herbert & Faith".......2004-02-09

Now we have something that only Percy Faith could tackle "The Columbia Album of Victor Herbert", composer Victor Herbert has all the elements that Mr. Faith was looking for, and what a workout the award winning Percy Faith Orchestra has in store for them, look at the result...pure satisfaction and then some ~ "TOYLAND" is one of the most beautiful songs ever written, Percy's arrangement comes from the heart and weaves a magic spell over the listener ~ "MARCH OF THE TOYS", once again the signature arrangement comes to the surface of each cue that Mr. Faith records, very stimulating performance ~ listen to this cue and visualize the toys coming to life ~ "A KISS IN THE DARK" and "KISS ME AGAIN", once again the magic prevails with soft and sweeping strings, The Percy Faith Touch comes to the forefront ~ and Percy was always there to record the music whenever the time presented itself, and it is here and now.

Two great giants in the music world Victor Herbert (1859-1924) and Percy Faith (1908-1976), brought together by Columbia Records and originally released in 1958 (C2S-801), received wonderful reviews from the music critics. This is an historic event for Faith fans, a double LP that has all the ingredients is now released on one single compact disc ~ with all the sonic clarity you could ask for.

Great job to all who were involved in bringing this to listeners of fine music ~ very impressive with all original liner notes and recording cues intact. This has to be in the top five of Faith's re-issues, keep them coming, cause there is an audience out there crying and craving more of the same...gotta love it!

5 out of 5 stars Herbert in good hands with Faith renditions.......2003-10-08

Percy Faith, the easy listening music arranger and conductor, pays homage to composer Victor Herbert (1859-1924) and in doing so offers us a remarkable recording of Herbert's oft-forgotten music. Faith interprets Herbert's music with his signature lush strings and sound orchestral arrangements that provide a light buoyancy to the compositions. Especially good are Indian Summer, Spanish Serenade and Gypsy Love Song. But all tracks are impressive and offer good testimony to Herbert's compositions and Faith's tuneful arranging. This is one of the better Faith re-releases from Collectables to date.
