Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Amazing Rhythm Aces by any other name...........2002-01-09

If, like me, you feel that the Amazing Rhythm Aces haven't recorded enough albums, this is for you. Russell Smith was the main sound of the ARA so the tracks on this album have an instant familiarity and accessibility while retaining the variety for which the ARA were famous.

Russell's voice lends itself well to songs of unrequited love and Your Eyes and The Boy Next Door are fine examples. To counter this Sunday Best, with it's variations on the title (act my Sunday Best; wearing Sunday Best; made my Sunday Best) is a song of requited love. As soon as he mentions the yellow sun dress with 32 buttons down the middle you know he'll remember that Sunday Best.

Blue Collar Blues and American Tragedy cover the country standards of futures blighted by redundancy and war, the latter with it's Vietnam references showing how long ago these track were originally released.

Southern Music plays as a standard piece of Southern blues, until you realise that he's singing about all the reasons people from the South have not to be sad and celebrate all the good things they have.

With enough musical variety to keep it entertaining for its full 75 minutes, this became my most played record in 2001 as an ideal companion for car journeys and looks set to stay that way for some time yet.

Death, as they say, can be a good career move. That's a cynical attitude to take toward the passing of one of the greatest legends in blues--in fact, one of the greatest legends of American music--but it's hard not to get cynical in the wake of all the reissues and dusted-off old recordings that have hit the shelves in the wake of John Lee Hooker's death in June 2001. That said, the aptly named The Cream is worth a listen. Recorded in Palo Alto in 1977, this live concert recording captures Hooker in a relaxed mood, taking things easy and jamming with the band. It's a good, solid set, especially in its closing number, "Boogie On," a jamming version of Hooker's classic "Boogie Chillen" that features some nice harp work from Charlie Musselwhite. While The Cream doesn't threaten the pride of place of Hooker's live Newport recording (itself recently reissued), it's plenty satisfying on its own terms. --Genevieve Williams

5 out of 5 stars Hooker at his chilled out best.......2002-08-04

I realy dig this album, as it is so smooth and easy to listen to. Very cool, calm and laid back, throw this album on when your looking for something to calm you down. Stand out tracks include "Louise" & "Bar Room Drinking". Not the best place to start out on Hooker, but if your are a hooker fan, or love laid back chilled out blues, then this album is worth its weight in gold.

      4 out of 5 stars Sweet Cream.......2002-06-22

If you like the sound of a wicked electric blues guitar, John Lee Hooker is the man. At least he is for me. Hooker has always been a classic and a lot of fun to listen to. I would recommend this CD to anyone, even if you hadnt heard of the legend before.

3 out of 5 stars Go for the country side.......2002-06-17

This CD is very like the Charlie Rich R&B sessions/Sings Hank Williams one. The country half of both these CDs are excellent. But, the R&B sides are hopeless on both. The problem here is that there is stuff on the CD that should not be there. JLL did better R&B than those Chuck Berry novelties, the caberat standard "Save the last dance for me" [Nashville Sound, more than R&B] or the likes of "Good Golly Miss Molly". "Big legged woman", "CC rider" and one or two others show what the album could have been. "Teenage letter" is merely a bluesy energetic performance of a song not deserving of it [that word teenage and blues do not mix - sounds like a Pat Boone attempt with balls].

The country side of the record, with "invitation to your party" and "One minute past eternity" becoming hits from it, proved a much more essential and career enhancing collection. And, it is bluesier to boot: "I can't trust me", "How's my ex treating you" and "Rambling rose" knock the socks off of most of the choices on the R&B half. Also, JLL's covers of Moon Mullican's/Hank Williams' "Jambalaya", Hank's "Cold cold heart", Jimmie Rodgers' "Frankie and Johnny" and Jim Reeves' "Home" prove that Lewis could master others' country hits as well. Perhaps the only downside on the country album is the addition of sister Linda Gail's voice on the bluesy "Seasons of my heart" [a song Lewis himself is doing superbly].

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of Tony Joe's finest albums. Wait 'til you hear that last track........2006-05-12

Going back and listening again to Tony Joe White's prodigious output from his early years, one is amazed at the depth of his talent as a guitarist, a singer and as a songwriter. After a series of albums that explored his love of deep Southern Blues, TJW took a warmer, more acoustic turn with Home Made Icecream. A lot of this is the back porch music he clearly loves - and here he is surrounded by fine session men who, if I recall from my old vinyl copy, include a drummer who wouldn't play until he'd read the lyrics...which as Tony Joe noted: "Is all right by me." The album flows beautifully, kicking off with a little rocker - Saturday Night in Oak Grove Louisiana (Tony Joe always had a thing about vehicles - little details like fender skirts - and here its the fibreglass mufflers on his pickup truck) and featuring among other things a gorgeous, lightly picked acoustic guitar and harp instrumental: the title track of the album. There's a ballad - Ol Mother Earth - but the standout is the last track which blows in like a cold breeze off a lake. "Did Somebody Make a Fool Out of You" is among his best ever examples of songwriting, singing and guitar playing. They all come together in a plangent, soulful blues number which Tony Joe double tracks perfectly, singing a close harmony that adds a plaintive cry to the lyrics. The centrepiece of the tune is an acoustic guitar solo that in 30 years of playing has never, for me, lost its power and depth. This man is not afraid to let silence and white spaces do some of the talking. It makes my spine shiver, and if the album starts all summery, by the end you can feel winter closing in. It is an awesome way to end a beautiful album. Buy it.
