Living Legends of Old Time Music!.......2001-06-27
This collection (check out Vols. 2-3 also) features fiddlers from the Ozark region and is an excellent sampling of the extraordinary talents still playing traditional music in the area. Most of these fiddlers are still living, as the recordings took place in the late 1990's. It is interesting to compare these recordings with reissues of 78's from the 1920's/30's (See "Music From the Lost Provinces", or "Echoes of the Ozarks", for example) -- you may find that even in this modern world there are still direct lines to the old time traditional music that enjoyed such a brief spotlight earlier in this century. Highly recommended for any fan of fiddling.

Customer Reviews:
Do these guys have a Conductor?.......2002-05-31
I am a very hearty Percy Grainger fan, but I am very dissappointed with the quality of the pieces on this CD. While the strings and Phillip Martin on the piano seem to carry their weight fairly well (the recording of Mock Morris is very nice), the wind players leave much to be desired. Balance and stylistic problems plague this CD. The first trumpet plays decent but can't time his breaths worth anything and the low woodwinds and brass put out a pitiful amount of sound. The flute's interpretation in "Blithe Bells" is stylistically terrible. There is also a horrible electronically synthesized solo in "Green Bushes" (Imitating Bassoon maybe???) which completely destroys that piece. Overall I'm very unhappy with this CD. If you're looking for Grainger, purchase the Chandos Grainger Edition CD's with the Royal Northern College of Music Wind Ensemble. Those CD's are vastly superior to this poor attempt at Grainger.

Produced by Saul David Raye, the CD also features the voices of Joni Allen, Toni Childs, Seane Corn, Donna de Lory, Samantha Mehra, Danny Peck, Steve Ross, Mark Smith, Suzanne Sterling and C.C. White. The backing band, including Girish Gambhira on tablas, James Harrah on electric guitar, Ian Walker on bass, and Jay Bellerose on drum set, grooves seamlessly from Saturday night to Sunday morning. Guests on sitar, saxophone, string quartet and trumpet move the tracks through meditation, communion and redemption.

INCREDIBLE!!!.......2003-01-17
Greg Greenway is a singer/songwriter that touches your soul. The only thing better than a Greg Greenway album is the wonder of seeing him live. Inspirational lyrics and awesome guitar play and a man who believes in the music he sings. If you get the chance he has a newer album called "Something Worth Doing" as well that you can get from his website. greggreenway.com No this is not an advertisement, it is from a fan who thinks Greg is incredible.

Spokane, Washington's Don Emerson is clearly in step with contemporary Nashville trends in country music: his style of easy-listening country-pop is light on twang and heavy on romance and earnestness. But even as an independent artist thousands of miles away from Tennessee, Emerson compares favorably with many of Music City's heartthrobs-of-the-week. The arrangements here are mostly tasteful and understated, and Emerson's voice is able to impart emotion without overindulgence. What's more, Emerson wrote or cowrote 9 of the 10 cuts, allowing his true personality to shine through, a personality that revels in the sweet and sentimental side of life. Fans of current mainstream stars Bryan White and Mark Wills should find much to enjoy here. --Marc Greilsamer
Album Description
Don Emerson's Whatever It Takes is a collection of 10 country/adult contemporary songs. It was recognized as the #1 European Country Music album of 1997.

This CD is part of an ambitious reissue program of folklorist (did someone say saint?) Alan Lomax's library of recordings. Recorded during a 1960 trip by Lomax to the Eastern Shores of Virginia, these are not the velvet voices of today's high-gloss studio productions. These are the actual voices of the gospel choirs, jubilee singers, and fisherman who continued to honor their African American musical traditions long after the rest of the world had plunged into the modern age. Colonial fife-and-banjo music is represented by the fascinating song "Joe Turner." The sparkling call-and-response of the "Menhaden Chanties" shows how fishermen once used song to lighten their load when pulling in their nets. But most impressive are the gospel groups the Silver Leaf Quartet and the Bright Light Quartet. Contrary to its title, "So Tired" by the Bright Light Quartet will have you doing cartwheels in the aisles and working happily all through the day. --Ken Hohman
Customer Reviews:
The Brightest Gem.......2006-10-19
Of the excellent Southern Journey series, this is my favorite. The Bright Light Quartet, singing work songs and gospel in close harmony are extraordinary, and I believe that these and the few other pieces on three other Southern Journey albums are their only recorded songs. Many other pieces on the CD are also outstanding, but the BLQ...
The sound is amazingly good; the remastering was done masterfully. (Sorry.) It's very hard to believe that these were field recordings.
I bought several of the Southern Journey series when they were on Prestige, and I bought them again immediately when the CD's became available.
I consider this an absolute must have, and it would be a desert island treasure.

Contrasts.......2005-07-30
The sixth disc of the Grainger Edition has all five "fripperies" Molly, Shepherds, Country, Mock, and Handel, with maybe the best versions of Shepherds Hey! and Mock Morris. This Country Gardens is a little slow for me and it's very similar to the Band version but I like it cause the Trumpet goes all out on his parts. But these pieces are contrasted by some of Grainger's least known works, i.e. Youthful Suite and The Warriors. Youthful suite is great, especially because he wrote it when he was 17. Doesn't get your blood really going like Molly on the Shore or Danish Folk Music Suite but it'd be nice to read to or listen to while writing. Warriors is in your face in the beginning and end and really quiet in the middle. It uses one of his best themes from Arrival Platform Humlet and the climax is awesome at the end. The middle section has a nice use of offstage brass which is going with the main melodies frantically but quietly while the strings play really smooth long notes. Also on this disc is the most traditional and classically beautiful versions of Irish Tune and also a full and beautiful version of Early one Morning, I always picture getting up really early in the morning and watching the sun rise and there's a moment when it switches from minor to major and it's like the Sun first appearing, glorious! This disc could be a good intro to Grainger, it's not the best of the Grainger Edition but that still means it rocks most other Grainger discs and other CD's in general.
Special versions (for Stokowski) of Grainger favorites.......2004-10-19
The Warriors may be the highlighted item on this disc, but I was blown away by the "versions for Stokowski" of seven Grainger pieces (mostly the great chestnuts) -- both the arrangements and the performances are fantastic! The composer made several versions of each, for strings, full orchestra, wind band, etc.; these Stokowski commissions are perhaps the most interesting. "Room music tidbits" Mock Morris and Handel in the Strand are here, but the other five (folk-music settings) make an especially outstanding set. The beautiful Irish Tune from County Derry and Early One Morning complement the sprightly Molly on the Shore, the somewhat wacky Country Gardens (*very* different from the well-known arrangement), and Shepherd's Hey with an ending that knocks you off your seat.
Another Percy Grainger admirer.......2003-02-08
I have been listening to and fascinated by classical music since college (I'm 57 now ) when I needed an 'easy A' and took a course in 'Music Appreciation'. Yet, I had never heard of Percy Grainger until just two years when I took a stab in the dark and bought a CD through BMG Classical Music called "Percy Grainger - In a Nutshell" (City of Birmingham Sym Orch, Simon Rattle conducting).
What a brilliant and fanciful composer; an Australian who used (arranged) folk songs and ethnic tunes from the entire English speaking world - with marches the equal of Elgar and dances on a par with Liszt and Dvorak. But enough name dropping. Listen to any cut in any CD in the currently produced series called "The Grainger Edition" and I guarantee that the world will seem to be a much mellower and more friendly place. Grainger's compositions will go all long way with anyone's search for contentment through music.

Every last note..........2006-06-14
A super budget 5 CD collection of all of Grainger's Piano music.
Every last note!
The shipping alone would be $17.00+ for the 5 individual Cds.
Englishman Martin Jones plays these as if he wrote them. He is thoroughly inside this music.
I think his best work to date.
He is joined on CD #5 by Richard Mcmahon and Phillip Martin. Where they rollick in various combos and trios on 1, 2 and 3 pianos. This is exhilerating. Especially on an truly uplifting version of Green Bushes.
The entire set is strongly idiomatic and given a clear, crisp, warm and spacious recording. FIRST CLASS sound.
There are too many highlights to single out, but the In A Nutshell Suite and Green Bushes are especially GOOD!
There is not a bad note or "vibe" on any of these CDs.
Highly recommended for Granger fans and fans of English Piano Music.

Thank you Tommy for sharing your talent with us, and thanks to the band. You are my favorite Bluegrass Band. My two favorite songs on this CD are He Looked Beyond My Faults And Saw My Needs, and Who Is That Knocking. Lord Willing, we hope to see more CD's from the Tommy Webb Band.

Playing Time - 39:32 -- Tommy Webb follows up his 2005 "Now That You Are Gone" album with a promising 2007 project honoring his bluegrass home, music, and other artists in the genre. Opening with a Cordle and Shell song that fellow Kentuckian Ricky Skaggs has also recorded, Tommy tells us that the only time them old sad songs on the jukebox give him the blues is when he's "Lonesome for You." The importance and significance of bluegrass in Tommy's life are reinforced in the title cut on "Eastern Kentucky" that refers to the priceless, timeless, and comforting songs of his state. The lyrics mention bluegrass artists Skaggs, Keith Whitley, and Ralph Stanley.
Covering some classic bluegrass standards like "No Mother or Dad," "Arab Bounce," and "Julie Ann" illustrates just how deeply-seated the music is in the heart of a man who first started jamming and singing as a teen. Over the years, Webb's bands have included the Pine Top Ramblers, South Creek, Onlyne, Clyde Bowling and the Southern Bluegrass Boys, and now his own Tommy Webb Band (since 2005). In addition to two originals on the CD, "If It Weren't for Bluegrass Music I'd Go Crazy," is a creative makeover of a country song that provides a pretty tasty recipe for maintaining one's sanity. Clinton Gregory recorded "If It Weren't for Country Music I'd Go Crazy" in the 1990s, and Tommy Webb's bluegrass lyrics now give a different perspective. We learn that the guitarist and singer has an affinity for the music of "Bill, Larry, Mountain Heart," and would vote for "Ralph Stanley for President" if given the chance. That cut is receiving decent airplay from its being on Volume 86 of the Prime Cuts of Bluegrass sampler.
Produced and recorded by the inimitable Ron Stewart, "Eastern Kentucky" also enlists that stellar multi-instrumentalist's support on fiddle, banjo, mandolin, guitar and resonator guitar. Others include Chris Goble (banjo), Tadd Huff (bass), Kenny O'Quinn (mandolin), and Harold Nixon (bass). They all do a solid job, but it's also apparent when Stewart's sturdy and self-assured breaks or twin fiddles invigorate the music with added energy and emotion. Webb sings with an expressive, forlorn delivery. Some of his most fulfilling, lonesomest moments come when he's singing in his higher range on a song like Goble and Drumm's "Julie Ann" and his own "It's All Behind Me Now." A spiritual song of praise, Dottie Rambo's "He Looked Beyond My Faults" could have been infused with more power and feeling in a higher key, but Webb still imparts listeners with a strong statement about his faith and inspiration. He wrote a second verse for the song to seek the Lord's favor and ask for His blessing. "South of Cincinnati" is a longing for home in the hills of Harlan County. Another countryish song with similar tempo and melody, "Someday You'll Call My Name" was co-written decades ago by Smilin' Eddie Hill and Jean Branch. Besides being recorded by Hank Williams, the song was a top ten hit for Jimmy Wakely back in 1949. The set closes with a rousing cover of Ralph Stanley's "Rocky Island" featuring Webb's high-octane clawhammer banjo. This album is my first introduction to Tommy Webb. I get the impression that his quartet can put on a very entertaining show. They have good emotionally-charged material, and it's presented with distinguished vocalizing and consummate musicianship.
