John Bizzack - Songwriter of the Western Opera Series, Guitar - Narrator

John's music interests reach back to the late 60's when he played country and rock in garage and college bands as he supported himself in college as part of a popular guitar duo in central Kentucky. He began collaborating with various writers in and around the Nashville area in the early 90's, playing on numerous sessions and showcases. Hes enjoyed several independent cuts in the U.S., Canada and Europe, reaching Top 40 on European country charts and regional western markets. In 2000, John was selected the first winner of the National Hank Cochran Song Writing Contest and has had material featured in independent films.

Marvin Adcock - Songwriter of the Western Opera Series, Guitar

Marvin was bitten by the music bug at an early age as both a musician and songwriter. He caught the ear of Four Star Records in Los Angeles in the 70's as both a vocalist and a songwriter, until Uncle Sam decided he could use him in Vietnam instead. Concentrating on his family through the 70's and 80's he began collaborating with Nashville writers in the 90's and has since had numerous cuts by independent artists in the U.S., Canada, and Europe, reaching top 40 on the European country chart. He currently divides his time between Nashville and performing in a regional performing band in Kansas called the Sunndogs.

Andy Reiss - Lead Guitar - Session Leader

Andy Reiss grew up in San Francisco, playing in a wide variety of bands ranging from honky tonk in bars and casinos to playing show tunes in theaters. He has been involved in session and band work since 1981 with Pete Drake, Amy Grant, Ronnie Millsap, Slim Pickens, The Jordanaries, Charlie McCoy, B.J. Thomas, Ranger Doug Green, Mandy Barnett, and on the road with Reba McEntire and Linda Davis. Andy has played on hundreds of records including two Grammy Award winners, B.J. Thomass "Amazing Grace" and Rebas, " Does He Love You." He is very active in Nashville as a member of the western swing band, the "Time Jumpers" and "Society Band - The Dave Humphreys Orchestra".

Arvel Bird: Fiddle - Mandolin - Engineer and Mixes

Arvel is the owner of Brush Hill Studios in Nashville. He is an active producer, engineer and head of Singing Wolfe Records. Four time Indiana State Fair fiddle champion and Indiana Summer Music Festival fiddle champ. He has toured and played with Glen Campbell, Loretta Lynn, Ray Price, Clay Walker, Tom T. Hall, Louise Mandrell, Brett James, Keith Harling and others. Classically trained, but a veteran bluegrass, country, cajun, swing, celtic, jazz and new age musician. He has released roots music, bluegrass, celtic, and contemporary instrumental Native American violin/flute CDs.

Ray Barnette - Vocals

Ray began his music career playing bass in house bands on Beale Street in Memphis while he attended Memphis University majoring in Voice Studies. He graduated from Lambuth University with a Bachelor of Music Degree in Vocal Performance. He teaches Bass guitar and voice lessons and works as a songwriter and is considered a top demo vocalist in Nashville. His vocals have been featured in numerous national commercial campaigns and he has played and recorded with Lari White, on TNN, and toured and recorded with the late Carl Perkins. Ray has developed his talents as an engineer and producer and has produced songs for Chuck Cannon, Kim Williams, Warner Chappell, Song Music, Hummingbird Productions, Earthrock Productions as well as material for television and advertising campaigns. In 2000, Ray released a rock-a-billy album with his band, "The Rockitmen" inspired by his mentor, Carl Perkins.

Pat Sever - Steel, Banjo, Dobro

Pat has been playing music and writing in Nashville since 1976. An original member of the Capitol recording group, "The Pirates of the Mississippi," his work has appeared on records and he has toured and played with Charlie Rich, Eddy Rabbit, Billy Dean, Rob Crosb

If your an affectionado of real "Cowboy Music" this is a must have album.

Each song is a short story of a period in time in the life a cowboy.

The writers are cowboy wordsmiths, saying all the things you have ever thought or dreamed and wished you could have painted on to a canvas for time to judge.

The lead singer tells the stories with heart as big as what he sings of.............the West! The background harmonies are nothing less then impeccable and it certainly is what you would have expected from a collaboration such as this.

Whether you tapping your toe to an upbeat tune or closing your eyes and listening to the heart felt renderings of cowboy life you won't be sorry you made this part of you cowboy music library.

Saucy, Melodic, Old-Fashioned American Wind Quintet Music.......2004-09-13

[Disclaimer: I'm a pushover for wind quintet music. There is something about the uneasy combination of timbres that unfailingly engages my interest and admiration.]

I found myself having trouble getting beyond the first band on this delightful release from Albany Records featuring the playing of a Los Angeles-based wind quintet calling themselves 'Calico Winds.' I kept pushing the repeat button to hear it one more time. It's that rhythmically invigorating and melodic. The music presented here is almost all by Americans, some from among those first conservatory-trained American composers of the 19th-century: William Mason, his nephew Daniel Gregory Mason, and Edward MacDowell. The more recent composers tend to write in conservative style so that the most recent work, 'Sea Sketches' by the only non-American, Briton David B. Chadwick, could be mistaken for something by an early twentieth-century writer. Some of the pieces are skillful transcriptions for quintet: Mason's 'Dance Antique,' that infectious first band I'd mentioned; MacDowell's 'Fireside Tales,' William Grant Still's folk-song based 'Miniatures' and 'Folk Suite,' Scott Joplin's 'Two Rags' ('The Cascades' and 'Maple Leaf Rag'), and the rousing closer, Sousa's 'The Stars and Stripes Forever.' Indeed, the only works originally written for wind quintet are Daniel Gregory Mason's 'Divertimento,' Arthur Farwell's brief and delightful 'Prairie Miniature,' and Chadwick's 'Sea Sketches.' That latter, by the way, has a catchy setting of 'The Sailors' Hornpipe,' another piece I couldn't get enough of.

Calico Winds consists of five women: Eileen Holt Helwig, flute and piccolo; Rong-Huey Liu, oboe and English horn; Rachel Berry, horn; Kathryn Nevin, clarinet; and Theresa Treuenfels, bassoon. I'd never heard of this expert and musicianly group before, although I gather they have made at least one prior recording on the humorously named 'Occasionally Sober' label and containing music from Bach to Zappa. I expect we'll be hearing from them again, if we're lucky.

This is not profound music. This is joyful music. It's worth hearing, and more important, worth coming to love. A real keeper, this.

To Tame the Perilous Skies is simply a gorgeous piece of music and a delight for wind symphony musicians. The album is a must for serious music fans.

Classical from a classic.......2004-01-11

Holsinger is simply a classic among classics. I find him to be a truely amazing composer. If you are new to Holsinger, his Volume One recording is the best place to start. To Tame the Perilous Skies, Ballet Sacra, Liturgical Dances; all are simply amazing. Pounding low brass parts and intricate, pulsating, unison rhythms are what draws me to his music.
