Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars It doesn't get any sweeter.......2005-08-25

I've been listening to Joe Pass for about 30 years, and my first exposure was the "Vituoso" album, and I went home and almost threw my guitar in the trash. I didn't even know how to describe what I had heard. I dislike the over-used term of genius, but I will have to admit that Joe was a true genius at his craft. He had incredible facility in all aspects of music: harmony, melody, rhythm, counterpoint, dynamics, and amazing improvisational skills.
What truly astounded me was that I had thout that after Django Reinhardt, there was no way anyone could completely blow me away on solo jazz guitar. I was wrong, and Joe had his own sound and harmonic sense that was very different than Django's. In my opinion, the album "Virtuoso" stands on it's own as one of the truly great jazz recordings period. "I remember Charlie Parker"
shares some of the best qualities of "Virtuoso", but in a much more restrained and softer way. Most of the tunes are ballad-style, played on a nylon string guitar, and all played finger-style, giving the album a much more mellow, contemplative sound. It is a wonderful tribute to one of Joe's idols, Charlie Parker, and even in it's own gentle way, the songs all swing. I place this album as one of Joe's best recordings, and as one of my most favored jazz guitar albums. It is the kind of recording that you can listen to one week, come back to it a week or two later, and it sounds like you are hearing it for the first time.
    I highly recommend this album.

5 out of 5 stars WOW! Solo Acoustic Jazz Guitar At It's Finest.......2000-01-28

This is one of my favourite CDs, if not my absolute favourite. Pass is at his best on this mellow, incredibly well-recorded, technically wonderful CD. The music demonstrates his amazing talent, his speed and technical proficiency, as well as his ability to bring soul to the music. Any fan of Pass or of acoustic guitar or jazz should not be without this recording.

4 out of 5 stars moments of rough beauty.......2007-01-30

it's fairly disingenuous to say that john fahey shouldn't have recorded this because he was sick. furthermore, to say fahey himself wrote this album off isn't entirely relevant, since he didn't look back to his early takoma lp's for inspiration later in life, particularly when he was recording his 'red cross' and 'womblife' records. to say this isn't as good as the earlier 'blind joe death' is to misunderstand the essence of fahey's musical evolution. at this stage in his life, he was fighting off the oft-misunderstood (yet nevertheless debilitating) epstein-barr virus. perhaps some reviewers would rather he did not record this album, but it is a window on the artist during a particularly rough period in his life. [it's like saying "maybe richard and linda thompson shouldn't have recorded that album while their relationship disintegrated around them."] yes, the pace is slower, the tone is darker, but uninspired? hardly.

    1 out of 5 stars Don't Record Things When You're Ill.......2003-04-04

Fahey explained this disaster by saying that he had a virus when it was recorded and during the playback. It's a very poor album, full of bum notes and uninspiring playing. There's plenty of potentially good material, but it's really an object lesson against recording things when you're ill. His producer should have called on him to re-record it when he was better. It's too late now, of course.

    1 out of 5 stars Bad.......2003-01-11

John was quite ill when he made this record, and it shows. There's no inspiration, and no syncopation. Everything is tired, flat, listless, dull. You'll never find a more apt title on anyone's album than "Minutes Seem Like Hours, the Hours Seem Like Days". So this is for completists only. As the album title itself says "I Remember 'Blind Joe Death'" - now THAT was a great album!

3 out of 5 stars A return to the old days.......2000-07-21

John Fahey is a very interesting composer of solo guitar music for the most part. This album is all instrumental, all solo guitar. Quite interesting and harkens back to his early days and his first recording, The Legend of Blind Joe Death, a name he made up for himself. It is less melodic than the 60s recordings, but still very Fahey-esque. I am giving this one three stars only because the first five albums all seem to deserve five stars. Probably the best place to start with Fahey is the Kottke/Lang/Fahey record or any of the first three albums. The later records are more mature and more eclectic. He is just a great musician and one of a kind. See reviews of his other albums for more insight. I just did not find this album as moving as the early works, America (!) or God, Time & Casuality, but still recommended!

    5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!!! A Must Buy!.......2004-02-11

I would usually be a little hesitant about dropping twenty bucks for 1 cd, but I tell you this one is worth every penny. A little place everybody hangs out down here in Key West is constantly playing Johnny Gamboa music and this one is probably one of his best yet. I just had to have it! Unless your a big rap/hip-hop freak, you won't be disapointed. All songs are timeless and a class above the noise all over the radio these days. Well constructed songs with tastful melodies that you just can't get tired of and he's got a great voice too. Definately Grammy material and will surely become a classic. We all can't wait to see him in concert.
