Customer Reviews:
Not My Style.......2007-05-11
This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!
Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28
For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.
Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16
This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.
Western Music.......2005-07-29
I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."
A great follow-up.......2003-08-29
This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

Good CD Good Price.......2007-06-10
I have not been a long time fan of Keith Whitley but I know that he is better than any country artist that has come out in the last 5 years.
Every song on this CD is instantly recognizable for me and I enjoy his voice so much. Many of the songs will be recognizable to anyone listening to country radio in the last couple of years because they have been re-recorded by today's artists. The music is just good solid traditional (or neo traditional if you want to get technical) country.
Songs like "I'm over you" and "When you say nothing at all" almost cleanse your musical soul of all the over-produced country-pop garbage our ears are being assaulted by today. Their simplicity and heart is a breath of fresh air.
Keith Whitley's smooth voice is his main asset. Kind of a mix between Alabama's lead singer's voice and Randy Travis.
But, and I don't want to be the materialistic weasel here, the most shocking aspect of this CD is the price... eight dollars! Are you kidding me? That makes buying this CD a no-brainer.
All songs on this CD are great, but one hit is missing........2006-08-08
There is no bad song on this CD. But if I had to buy only one Keith Whitley CD, I would choose one with "Don't Close Your Eyes."
a must have.......2004-10-28
this is a must have for all you keith whitley fans out there'. its just awsome. i love all these songs keith will always be my favrotie country musician.there's not many today out there that can compare to keith whitley to me. if any- at all. i wish and i hope that someday they will release a box set of keith whitley. there's many many songs he has unreleased. and theres alot of photos and live performance's out there that needs to be released. im so lucky to have his demo sessions. there priceless.but you should buy this album its a must have and the price is perfect. i'll always be a fan of mr whitley.
The best Keith Whitley collection to debut in years.......2003-09-11
Finally they included Somebody's doin me right! That great Keith Whitley song from 1991 is worth the whole $11.98 and this kind of Keith Whitley complication has not been put together like this in many years also rare tracks found on here like On The Other Hand which is from 1985 before Randy Travis cut it and Brother Jukebox and I'm gonna hurt her on the radio is on here a great collecton for Keith Whitley fans. Buy it and enjoy it is finally something different that RCA put out.

THIS SET FROM VINCE GILL IS SOME OF HIS BEST WORK EVER.LOVE IT..REGARDS.MAUREEN
Fewer Tracks Than Essential Vince Gill.......2003-09-28
Since the early '90s, Vince Gill has been one of the most popular artists in country music because of his work on the MCA label. His recording career, however, began back in 1979; first as lead singer of the Pure Prairie League ("Let Me Love You Tonight") and then as a solo artist for RCA.
The Platinum & Gold Collection offers 10 of the 11 singles Gill recorded while at RCA between 1983 and 1988 (missing is the top 40 "With You"). The key recording found here is "If It Weren't For Him," his top 10 duet with Roseanne Cash. It's been left off other RCA Gill retrospectives, including the strong 20 track Essential collection. Among the other gems found here are the rousing "Turn Me Loose," the heartbreaking "Oh Carolina," and the mandolin featured "Cinderella." "Everybody's Sweetheart" was a tongue-in-cheek comment on his then-more-famous, then-wife Janis, of Sweethearts of the Rodeo, while "The Radio" presented a touching ode to his oft-touring former Sweetheart. The two non-singles found here are the original version of his 1990 hit "Never Knew Lonely" and the otherwise unavailable toetapper "Lucy Dee."
Most of these recordings hold their own with Gill's more celebrated MCA stuff. Maybe he wasn't promoted properly at RCA or the timing wasn't right for Gill back then. Whatever the reason, it is nice to have these old hits available.

Customer Reviews:
A country singer at heart.......2004-09-30
Frank was born in England but raised in Australia, later to return to the UK to establish his singing career - a pattern repeated by Olivia Newton John. Whereas Olivia eventually based herself in America, Frank remained in the UK, playing the small country music circuit long after his pop successes were a distant memory. Country music has never been huge in Britain but it has enjoyed a reasonable level of support especially since the seventies. In the sixties, Frank Ifield discovered - as did the husband and wife team of Miki and Griff - that there was no significant following for the music. Frank, together with Miki and Griff, George Hamilton IV and a few others, helped to change that.
Like Miki and Griff, Frank had to compromise his music to get it heard but anybody listening to it will realize that Frank is a country singer at heart. A look at the track listing will show that Frank liked to cover country songs, although many pop singers also did that in those days. This compilation contains all the essentials.
Frank started his UK chart career with a couple of minor hits (Lucky devil, Gotta get a date) in 1960 but then disappeared from the charts until the summer of 1962, when he began a sequence of big hits - three number ones (I remember you, Lovesick blues, Wayward wind), a number four (Nobody's darlin' but mine) and a further number one (Confessin'). He then had another minor hit (Mule train) in October 1963. In the summer of 1964, Frank had one last top ten hit (Don't blame me) followed by six further minor hits up to the end of 1966. After that, he disappeared from the charts completely until a he had surprise minor hit in 1991 on a different label (The yodelling song), which is actually one of his sixties recordings (She taught me to yodel) re-titled.
Frank did much to improve the status of country music in Britain. He may have compromised his sound to appeal to pop music fans, but so have plenty of others. If you enjoy country music and sixties pop music, you will probably enjoy this. And if you do, check out Miki and Griff.

SIMPLY NOT RECOMMENDED.......2006-01-03
How would one consider the best of one's artist if the songs here are mostly taken from just one album. I am a Cowboy Junkies fan, I got 12 out of their 16 albums, all of them aren't available in my own country. Why waste time purchase an album that even the band doesn't recommend? The band doesn't only put so much effort on their music, they also put a great art on their CD's label.
I give this album a 1 rating simply for its unauthorized release.
Trying to make another buck off the band.......2004-01-10
Well normally i would have rated this album 5 stars as anything done by the Junkies deserves 5 stars. But when the band has no say in this particuler album i give it a big thumbs down. This is the second album of songs released by their old record label trying to rehash the stuff in a "Greatest hits" CD.
12 total tracks and 5 are off the Trinity Sessions album alone?! Why not buy that album anyway? Thats what got me hooked on the band and is my favorite. For an album that is similer in sound to the Trinity Sessions CD is Lay it Down. They have plenty of albums to buy rather then this one.
poorly-done compilation.......2003-12-30
RCA/BMG have released the third best-of compilation in seven years. Like one of the previous efforts, this compilation was done without the knowledge of the band and without their blessing. The band, via their website, has asked their fans not to purchase it.
Even if yu don't consider the band's wishes, there really is no reason to purchase this album. As a collection of Cowboy Junkies tunes, it misses the mark completely. It has a mere 12 tracks, and doesn't include many of their best-known and best-loved songs.
If you are looking for a compilation by this band, look for the album named "Studio". It is a much better retrospective of their career (to that point), and is the one compilation that is actually sanctioned by the band.
Other albums in the band's catalog will also serve as an introduction. Most fans consider their second album, "The Trinity Session", to be their quintessential release. My favourite album is "Black-Eyed Man", which includes their inspired cover of Townes Van Zandt's "To Live is to Fly". I rarely recommend live albums, but the two-disc "200 More Miles" is also an excellent introduction to a band that spends a lot of time on the road, has an excellent relationship with their fans, and always puts on a fine performance.
I give this album one star, and would give it zero if that were an option. This isn't a reflection on the music on the album: it is all top-notch. My rating is a reflection of a poorly-done compilation by a record label that should know better.
Unauthorized Release.......2003-12-06
The Cowboy Junkies, on their own official website, mention that they objected to the release of this album and urge their fans not to purchase it. I have not heard it, so I can't comment on the quality of songs presented here, but, like the reviewer before, would urge those new to the Cowboy Junkies to start with The Trinity Sessions or (my other favorite) Pale Sun Crescent Moon--or anything else, since they're all good. The one star is not a reflection of the band or this album--only that THEY don't recommend it.
Good, but the best of?.......2003-11-19
This is actually the third collection of theirs, and I think the second one they had nothing to do with. This does have great songs like "Sweet Jane", "Murder Tonight In The Trailer Park", and "Powderfinger", which is a "Neil Young" song. But at only 12 tracks, it's just missing too much. Specifically "Sun Comes Up, It's Tuesday Morning", "Cowboy Junkies Lament", and "A Common Disaster". What's on here is all good, but I would go with the "Best of", or "Studio 1986-1995" instead. Or you could always just get "The Trinity Session" or "Black Eyed Man", their two best albums.
