Few bands of the 1960s retained as much a sense of the roots of rock and roll as did Creedence Clearwater Revival. Their music is rife with country, rockabilly, and R&B influences, a combination that produced several hit singles--most of which are present on this collection. These include "I Heard It through the Grapevine," "Lodi," "Up Around the B ," "Who'll Stop the Rain," and of course "Bad Moon Rising." This is an excellent greatest-hits collection, and a perfect introduction to the music of a band that has been enduringly influential. --Genevieve Williams

4 out of 5 stars CCR.......2007-06-28

An excellent greatist hits CD, I used a handful of songs to burn a CD with other related style of music.

5 out of 5 stars great stuff.......2007-06-27

listening to this CD makes you realize how great john fogerty was back in the day. great songs, great sound.

5 out of 5 stars Gets me going in the morning.......2007-06-27

I've been listening to this CD for 2 weeks in my car on the way to work.

5 out of 5 stars Soundtrack of an era.......2007-06-15

This is an excellent compilation of CCR's tunes from the late 60s, early 70s. There's a reason why Credence tunes kept popping up in movies and commercials. It's great music and evocative of the era from which it comes. No need for me to review the individual tunes; anybody with a radio has head most of them. A must-have for any music fan.

5 out of 5 stars Fogerty.......2007-06-10

Great value. If you are into the 60s' and 70s' you will love this one.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best bocephus albums ever.......2006-04-26

now this is one of the best bocephus albums ever, yes the sound of country in the 70's was a raw sound and i like that sound alot, hank jr can still make good albums and still does, this is the sound of hanks i love best, daddy i need you tonight is still my favorite hank jr song, those type of songs, well the songs hank jr does about hank sr are by far my favorites by him... a fan of bocephus always, and the williams family...

5 out of 5 stars Classic Hank jr Gold........2002-06-18

I own over 10 Hank jr albums and I am a very big fan of his so I know Hank's music well, so trust me when I say this is wonderful.
You can't call yourself a hank fan and not own this CD, it's the first he made under the new label and the first of the Bochepous years.
There is some really great songs on this and only one song is a let down, the song "All by myself" is not so good but with all the other strong recordings on here who cares?

I love his late 70's stuff since it had such a raw sound and..."real" sound to it.
so do buy this CD (heck the price is low as you could want so why not?).

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Great collection.......2006-07-06

I got turned on to this series of train songs thanks to my 4 year old son who loves trains. Not only are these all (1-3) great compilations, and great songs-they are a slice of Americana. I just love them all. And, to "music lover," the song you were refering to about the engineer passing by his house to check on his baby-it is on "Night Train" the 3rd in the series. And, "the wreck of old 97" is a Johnny Cash classic.

5 out of 5 stars The Wreck of the Old 97.......2004-05-15

This is in response to "A Music Fan's" question. The wreck of the Old 97 was an actual event. The accident happened on September 27, 1903 in Virginia, and was immortalized by the song to which you refer. So no, you are not imagining it; but it's probably more of a big deal than you thought. A very useful website has many details and even newspaper articles and photographs. (...)

    5 out of 5 stars I need help!.......2004-02-26

This is not a review but I am desperate and need help. This is driving me crazy...Years ago my Grandmother used to sing many of the old railroad songs. One of my favorites was The Wreck Of The Old 97. She used to sing another one, but I cannot remember many of the words, therfore I cannot find it ANYWHERE! I am getting desperate trying to find it someplace on line. The song/story is about a conductor driving down the railroad tracks, and when he passes by his house, if his baby is sick (or something like that) the light on the track (or house) will be red. If the baby is OK, the light will be green. I know I did not imagine this song, but I just cannot remember the words. Does anyone have a clue?? I sure hope you can help!

Thank You! Please email me at ssandlf@adelphia.net if you can help! I would sure appreciate it!!

5 out of 5 stars Train classics from a bygone age.......2003-02-09

This is the first of a series of CD's released by Rounder, all devoted to train songs. This volume focuses on country music, although the series as a whole covers several musical genres. Some of the songs featured here were recorded in the 1990's while others are from as far back as the 1930's, yet somehow they fit together well.

Roy Acuff starts the wheels rolling with Wabash Cannonball, one of many train songs that he recorded. This is followed by another famous train song, Orange blossom special, inspired by the first streamline train ever to run in Florida. That was in 1938, although the Johnson mountain boys' version featured here was recorded in 1945.

Daddy what's a train?, from 1973, was written at a time when it was feared that trains would disappear from America altogether. Perhaps they will one day, but I doubt it. Elsewhere in the world, especially in Western Europe where the population density is much higher, there will always be trains.

Among the other great songs here, Steel rails (the title track) is sung superbly by Alison Krauss, while another wonderful lady, Kate MacKenzie, closes the set with a fine rendition of Pan American boogie. The original Pan American train ran from Cincinnati to New Orleans.

    5 out of 5 stars Great album!!.......2001-07-16

This is one of my favorite albums. 'Wabash Cannonball' by Roy Acuff is truly a classic in every sense of the word; Alison Krauss does a fine rendition of 'Steel Rails'; and the transition from steam to diesel power is aptly chronicled in 'Texas, 1947'. Rounder has done a truly admirable job with its series on American railroad songs; I also have Volumes 2 and 3. I just noticed they have released a Volume 4 which will be my next purchase along with Train 45.

If you like Smoky Mountain Hymns and similar music, this is a definite "Gotta Have It" for your music library! These arrangements are very beautifully done, and the instruments take you away to a little country church with plenty of guitars and banjos for everyone! This is "old-time" gospel at its best in the instrumental version.

    5 out of 5 stars Indispensable.......2007-04-08

The bad news is that the complete 4-disc CD set, as well as the individual CD's (volume 1-4) are all out of print. The good news is that they can all be found, with a little perseverance, from various dealers.

This wonderful, history-drenched series contains many (but not all) of the classics that appeared on the 8-disc vinyl collection, The Smithsonian Collection of Classic Country Music, which was originally available in the late 1970's and early 1980's, as well as additional essentials. Unfortunately, some of the tracks proffered on that collection no longer seem to be available, but why quibble? I own the original vinyl boxed set, AND the four CD's, and I'm here to tell you that this is the real deal. Whether purchased together or separately, these compilations contain a wealth of early country material, much of it unavailable anywhere else.

Volume 1 includes such early artists as the Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, Gene Autry, Roy Acuff, Tex Ritter, Ernest Tubb, Patsy Montana, Bob Wills, Vernon Dalhart, Merle Travis, and Molly O'Day. Volume 2 boasts the talents of Merle Travis, Bill Monroe, Lefty Frizzell, Hank Williams, Red Foley and Hank Snow. Volume 3 progresses to Marty Robbins, Faron Young, Johnny Cash and George Jones, and Volume 4 showcases the talents of Ray Price, Kris Kristofferson, Ray Price and Emmylou Harris. Together, the four volumes cover dozens of well known and lesser known country artists, and represent carefully selected, essential staples in the country canon, performed by true pioneers of the genre, and more modern keepers of the flame.

I lament that the CD versions forgo certain extras that made the original vinyl collection especially noteworthy, including sides that were divided into "Southeast" and "Southwest", a 56-page booklet that contained complete recording dates and band personnel, and a short bio of each artist! The vinyl version also had a whole disc devoted to bluegrass, and several key performances that I have been unable to find on CD. But the important part is the music, and this collection has been my favorite compilation of classic country since I acquired it, featuring music that simply never grows old. For new lovers of country roots music, these collections are THE place to start. Do not hesitate to get them while you can, for this set is sure to enhance your appreciation of where it all came from. And if you are a serious old-time lover of country music, this collection is truly indispensable.

Important note: This set is available as a four-disc collection, OR as four individual CD's, Volumes 1-4. ONLY the set labeled as the "Boxed Set" contains all four CD's. For some reason, the Amazon listing for Volume 1, which is a single disc, contains track listings for all four volumes.

5 out of 5 stars Very best 'couple of cds' country collection on the planet.......2005-06-24

I have all the time life country as well as some more, around 900 old country classic songs. Most of them that I did not have before are issued on these series 1-4. I would buy it, even if it costs a lot now. Great old style country, from good vocal classics to fantastic banjo solo's!
    It should be re released!

    4 out of 5 stars Traditional Music.......2004-02-29

Hey, this music sucks. But then did you expect polish from the Skillet Lickers and the Fruit Jar Drinkers? This is the real McCoy for traditional hillbilly music, straight from the billy's mouth. Folk music performed by the folks, from a time when nobody was embarrassed to sing, before country music became "pop rock" and sterile. It aint gonna hit top 40 today - and that is a compliment.

1 out of 5 stars advertised that there were 4 discs and only received ONE!!!!.......2002-07-06

I was very disappointed, I had this collection of music on Cassettes and when I only receved One Disc. Was mad...I really should get my money back.

3 out of 5 stars Decent but could have been better.......2001-02-12

With less than a handful of vintage "dirty blues" compilations around, it's hard to complain about a bad one. This one may not be bad, but it is merely decent: At under 43 minutes and only 13 tracks there's a real lack of material here. Factual errors (Track 2 "Stew Meat Blues" is incorrect -- it's actually Bessie Smith's "I got what it takes (But it breaks my heart to give it away)" from 1929) and omissions (Track 13 "Artist Unknown" is a rare transcription of Gene Autry) are real flaws. As is the odd inclusion of Light Crust Doughboys' "Pussy, Pussy, Pussy" -- why here?, and why digitize such an awful copy of this 1938 Vocalion single when Rhino/Sony's "Hillbilly Fever! Vol.1" reveals the track in its pristine glory. And whatever happened to Volume 2 anyway? Not bad for twelve bucks, but look first for Mojo Record's "The Copulatin' Blues" or the 2CD "Them Dirty Blues", or the Sony/Columbia "Raunchy Blues: Hot Nuts and Lollypops" for compilations with a better edge.

I collect hard to find excellent instrumental cd,s by great artist. I stumbled across Steve Mauldin's cassete of this Midnight string Volume 1. His blending of strings, steel guitar and drums for an added beat is superb. To bad he has not produced more of the classic country favorites from the 40's, 50's and 60's. A recommended for country classic music collectors.
