5 out of 5 stars This is the one.......2006-11-06

This is the best album I have heard in a long time. A good band, finally. I don't know what else to say. The music is just so relaxing and powerful. Very emotional.

5 out of 5 stars ahhhhhhhmazing!.......2006-04-01

I heard this band on fm94.9 in san diego and the second I heard it, i knew I had to get the CD. Each song is a stand alone work of art with the whole set making for a classic first record. If this band can keep up the momentum that they've started on Introstay, I can even imagine what they'll have in store for us in the future.

        Album Description

To the amazement of the world, on September 24, 1996, the history of humanity and the Australian Aborigines were rocked; changed fundamentally, forever. The Sydney Morning Herald reported "a team of scientists...had found a rock art site in the Northern Territory known by local Aborigines as Jinmium, that was at least 76,000 years old." and that "They also found evidence, in sediments below the art, that humans had first occupied the continent between 116,000 and 176,000 years ago."

When you listen to this recording you are making contact with the oldest continuous culture on earth. The Sound of Gondwana is dedicated to that far distant forebear of these four indigenous Australian artists who engraved the rocks some 75,000 years ago and, in that single act, expressed the deep creative impulses which separate humanity from all other living creatures on our tiny, blue planet.

The recording opens with a fitting piece by Alan Dargin, The Call, using sounds of the didjeridu to evoke the vastness and loneliness of the Australian outback. Set against delicate washes of synthesizer, the didjeridu wails and stutters like some ancient and mysterious presence.

Mark Atkins continues the didjeridu journey with a more vibrant, aggressive approach to the instrument with Dance This Time Around. With its sharp and insistent rhythm, its animal cries and intermittent songsticks, it is a reminder that the didjeridu is often used as a musical backdrop for both social and ceremonial dancing.

Hand Stencils by Matthew Doyle sets the didjeridu against a range of percussive instruments capturing those ceremonial moments when ochres are ground and prepared for the making of hand stencil paintings on the walls of caves.

The recording is completed with pieces from David Hudson which are deeply rooted in traditional playing.

I have friends that play didj, they let me hear some great players from some shows at Joshua Tree, but this disc really works as a rookies intro to didjeridu as well as being a marvelous recording for the masters to dig, too! The title grabbed my eye, and I am really thankful that I dug that far into the list (page 12 or 13 when I last checked the world music list)! It Didjd for me, it'll Didj fer y'all, too!!

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Listening, Great History.......2006-05-10

This multi-disc set has most of the major blues classics of the late 1940's and 1950's that went on to spawn the rock era; from Ike Turner and Rocket 88 to Howlin' Wolf's best sides. Sam Phillips and Sun Records got every major player south of Chicago to record there sooner or later--and even some who had done work in Chicago came back to do work in the landmark Memphis studio (which is a GREAT tourist destination!). The recordings are primitive by today's standards, even some crackles and pops--never mind the mix (!), but the performances are consistently superb! Awesome singers (including my personal favorite, Howlin' Wolf), awesome harp players, awesome guitarists (even young B.B. King) abound---this is a holy grail of American music classics that lay down the blueprint for the best of rock music's next half century, not to mention the music Elvis heard on the radio before his fateful 1954 visit to Sun studios. This multi-disc collection is the best way I've yet found to enjoy these blues.
