On his third album, Chicago singer Kurt Elling showcases his spectacular vocal abilities on a variety of standards. From the opening lines of "My Foolish Heart" to the final strains of "Every Time We Say Goodbye," Elling displays exquisite control. He also interprets the lesser-known works of Freddie Hubbard and McCoy Tyner. As a vocalist, he scats fearlessly, revealing an affinity for improvisers like John Coltrane. Accompanied by pianist Laurence Hobgood, saxophonist Eddie Johnson, bassist Rob Amster, and drummer Michael Raynor, Elling's style is buoyant and passionately expressive. A wholly romantic endeavor, This Time It's Love shows Kurt Elling in a particularly mellow context. An evocative crooner exploring the subtle nuances of jazz vocalese, Kurt Elling is finally hitting his stride. --Mitch Myers

Own this album!!.......2007-02-23
If you don't own this album - you need to. The musicianship is on par with the jazz masters - this is bound to become a historic album. Kurt Elling is the new jazz legend we have been looking for and his musical legacy will live on just like John Coltrane and Miles Davis. The proof is in the listening - buy this album!
Buy this Kurt Elling CD for the MUSICIANSHIP, YESSS!.......2004-02-21
Kurt Elling and Laurence Hobgood are in some ways like Hal David and Burt Bachrach with a few exceptions: Kurt sings infinitely better than either Hal or Burt and Laurence plays and arranges better than Burt. But boy, do they collaborate beautifully! The best song on the album: maybe "Foolish Heart". With Raynor, Onderdonk, Brad Wheeler, Eddie Johnson and Johnny Frigo,(Kids: he's 87 but sounds like 27!)folks should buy this for the great Chicago jazz musicians who have helped in advancing Kurt's great career. Really a great album but not Kurt's best effort(MITA) is the finest vocalist albulm of 2003, YES it is!
If you love jazz vocals...BUY THIS ALBUM.......2004-02-10
Kurt Elling is genius. He has a very classy but innovative style that will give you no choice but to play this album over and over. His originals are stunning and his versions of the jazz standards he has selected for this collection are creative without being over the top. I have owned this CD for two years now and it is still in high rotation in my collection. No matter what mood you're in, this album will suit it.
The Best Young Male Jazz Singer? Ex. "A" is Here.......2004-01-25
Many believe that Kurt Elling is the best male jazz singer under the age of 40 in the business. For those who would so argue, this album should be "Exhibit A" in support of their argument. Listen to how he wails on "Effendi"--he really shows his chops here. Elling is best known for his ability to improvise and bend lyrics as well as melody, and the third and fourth cuts on the album ("Smoochie" and "Jen's Yen") highlight that. Being the old "romantic softy" at heart that I am, though, my favorite on this set is the "harmonized dub" of "The Best Things Happen While You're Dancin'." One quibble: Kurt Elling sings his r's (like "moth-errrrrrrrrr") so hard that it's jarring. It's like the intentionally dissonant notes that Monk used to throw into his solos. But that's really a quibble. Highly recommended.
Simply Outstanding........2003-07-31
For one to say that Elling is the Sinatra of our time is in my oppinion, an understatement. He posesses a great un-matched skill to break the boundaries of conventional jazz and let the beautiful and melodic tones of his superior skatting lead it's listeners through a totally different world. It's easy to put on this cd and get lost in what seems like a totally new dimension of jazz that went unexplored for years. It's wonderful and inspiring to hear the sound of his vocal genius and to know that jazz is still alive and thriving. A definite must-have for those who truly appreciate vocal jazz, or any jazz for that matter.

What a joyous encounter!.......2005-08-04
"Live At The It Club" (Volume 1 and 2) has been recorded 1970 in sunny Hollywood/California and features Gene Harris (the co-founder of "The Three Sounds") on piano, Henry Franklin on bass and Carl Burnett on drums: jazzy, bluesy, grovy! What a joyous encounter while crusing! If you're interested in more live recordings by "The Three Sounds" check out these: "Live At The Lighthouse" and "Today's Sounds" all available on CD.
WHERE ARE YOU SOUNDS????????????.......2004-06-16
In every cd store I go in, I can't find any three sounds albums. if i really wanted to hear them, i could order a disk or two on line, but i just want to hear how they sound. are they straight ahead, or are they a chamber group?
Smokin'.......2000-07-19
This is one of those albums that you put in and can listen to the whole way through! This is by far one of my favorite jazz funk albums. I would definitly recomend this to anyone to digs quality music!
So Funky, So Real.......2000-05-26
Funk Jazz rarely even equals this album. bassist henry franklin and carl burnett were the perfect replacements for andy simpkins and bill dowdy for gene harris to work in this funky direction. they are able to keep the funky feel while changing the rythms so it doesnt sound to repetetive like some funk jazz can get. even for fans of more bop, the improvization level on this albums is at a hieght for the sounds. Check out volume two, just as good, slightly more down home in feel.

"It's Time" This Came Out in the U.S........2006-06-27
Neglected for years in Blue Note's various reissue series, Jackie McLean's brilliant Blue Note albums from 1964-66 are finally being released on CD domestically. For the longest time, only the amazing quartet album "Right Now" was available in the States (see my review), but within the last couple of years, five of the alto saxophonist's six sessions from this period have made it to disc. I suppose this is nothing new for these albums by Jackie Mack. Only "It's Time," "Action" and "Right Now" were originally released at the time of their recording in the 60s, and it wasn't until the late 70s that the phenomenal dates that comprised "Jackknife," "Consequence" and "High Frequency" (still MIA) were even put to vinyl.
Now with this Connoisseur reissue, it's time for many jazz fans to get a first listen of Jackie's first 1964 session. A sensational, impassioned quintet session, "It's Time" is as good as anything recorded for Blue Note from that watershed year (think "Speak No Evil," "Out To Lunch," "Point of Departure," "Inner Urge" -- see my review). McLean, the man who can take credit for bringing Tony Williams and Bobby Hutcherson to the Blue Note fold, has assembled another stellar group, including the young Charles Tolliver on trumpet, Herbie Hancock on piano, Cecil McBee on bass and Roy Haynes on drums. The material on this session is experimental, but grounded firmly in the Blue Note tradition, similar to Andrew Hill's sessions or Hancock's "Empyrean Isles." This is classic stuff, and finally you don't have to plunk down big bucks for the import title.

Update on previous review.......2005-10-10
Note that most of the 64-66 Jackie McLean albums have now been re-released (however, not this one) as well as some of the Sam Rivers. All reasonably priced and worth having. Also, see excellent Grachan Moncur 3-CD box at Mosaic for Jackie's great contribution to those seminal recordings.
"It's Time" For This To Get Released Domestically.......2000-09-20
With all the wonderful Blue Note reissues of the last few years, it's a shame that Jackie McLean's brilliant albums from 1964-66 have not been released on CD domestically. The amazing quartet album "Right Now" is the only disc ever released in the States. Unfortunately, this is nothing new for these albums by Jackie Mack. Only "It's Time," "Action" and "Right Now" were originally released at the time of their recording in the 60s, and it wasn't until the late 70s that the phenomenal dates that comprised "Jackknife," "Consequence" and "High Frequency" were put to vinyl. Thankfully, the Mosaic Company released all six of these albums in a limited edition box set a few years back, but now that too is out of print.
Until wiser heads prevail at EMI, you can at least get a glimpse at these marvelous recordings with the import CD version of Jackie's first 1964 session, "It's Time." A sensational, impassioned quintet session, "It's Time" is as good as anything recorded for Blue Note from that watershed year of 1964 (think "Speak No Evil," "Out To Lunch," "Point of Departure," "Inner Urge"). The material on this session is experimental, but grounded firmly in the Blue Note tradition, similar to Andrew Hill's sessions or Hancock's "Empyrean Isles." I'll be shocked if this doesn't get released in the U.S. through the RVG or Connoisseur series, particularly with the Mosaic set now being sold out. (Similar things have happened when other Mosaics have sold out -- when the Art Blakey and Larry Young sets went out of print, we began to see individual titles made available on Blue Note.) But then again we've never seen Sam Rivers' titles made available. This is classic stuff, and plunking down big bucks for the import will be a worthwhile investment.

Customer Reviews:
Like a exceptional bottle of wine... my most treasured of recordings........2006-11-19
Well, what can I say regarding some of the negative reviews here? Different strokes for different folks I suppose. To my ears, this recording is one of the finest works of art I have ever heard! First of all, we are dealing with Brian Wilson's songs here, and that needs no comment, for he has already earned his place as one of the 20th century's greatest composers. But it's the very diverse, artistic and passionate interpretation of this material that puts this work into a category all of its own. I've owned this album since the fall of 1998 and have revisited it many, many times since. The songs have not lost their appeal. Conversely, like fine wine, they have a way of getting better with age which is a quality all great music is imbued with.
Start to finish, this is an album I can play anytime, anywhere and just 'feel good'. Every track is interesting and unique, and most are just outright gorgeous. I do have my favorites... the first (instrumental) rendition of 'Til I Die' is just awesome. Interestingly, it features members of the original Pat Metheny Group, now named 'The Elements', and it works exceedingly well. It's very 'otherworldly'. Steve Kahn serves up a great latin-tinged rendition of 'Don't Worry Baby'. Very different from the original, this is a soundscape of great guitar work against a cushion of sensual female vocals. Wonderful stuff! 'In my Room' is a beautiful song expressed here in a very different way with a very unique piano/vocal interpretation by Marilyn Scott. The creative string arrangement and bass solo fit it wonderfully. I just love it. Tim Weston/Shelby Flint's rendition of 'Warmth of the Sun' is exquisite. It's absolutely beautiful. I loved all the concise Clark Burroughs Group acapella vingettes. These gorgeous vocal harmony sets are a nice change of pace between the more complex inprovisational numbers. Dori Caymmi does a haunting version of 'Caroline No' that is so different in feel from the original, yet it works so well, it like a fresh piece of music altogether. In fact, so many of these tracks are like that.... totally fresh interpretations that create a fresh piece of music out of familiar classics.
Although it's hard to pick out one track here that stands out from the rest, (they are all THAT good), I have to say that Vince Mendoza/John Abercrombie's rendition of 'Don't Talk' is a piece that goes to a place very rarely achieved by any musician. It transports one to that place where time stands still, and all you can do is 'listen' in awe. The melancholy arrangement of the strings, allowing Abercrombie to 'speak' with the notes of his guitar (and the space between the notes) is spellbinding and just fills me with goosebumps. I actually have been moved to tears upon hearing this piece... many times. This is music at it's very highest level.
So there you have it. The album ends appropriately with an acapella version of 'Til I Die'... Wilson's self prophecy of how he spent much of the next three decades:"I'm a cork on the ocean..." This album is much like all of Brian's music. Either you get it or you don't. It's VERY different from the original versions of the songs, but that is what makes this so special a recording. Here, these artists have all absorbed the soul of Wilson and expressed it in their unique ways and the result is nothing less than beautiful and very moving. It is without a doubt the most powerful tribute I've heard made of any artist. And no one deserves it more than this much loved composer.
Yes, it WOULD be nice (if this album weren't so wimpy).......2006-09-18
I like jazz, and I like Brian Wilson, but the combination of the two just doesn't work... at least, not here it doesn't. This is indeed "smooth jazz," not actual jazz. It's soft, mushy elevator music. Kenny G would not be out of place on this record, which gives you some idea of how it sounds. The most interesting tracks here are the a cappella numbers by the Clark Burroughs Group, but frustratingly, they don't even sing the whole songs! Maybe they should have blended these snippets into a medley instead of scattering them throughout the album. Still, they're easily the best things here and the only things Wilson's fans will probably be interested in.
The Clark Burroughs Group tracks make this album worth hearing once. The rest is bland and toothless. I'd love to hear some real jazz interpretations of Wilson's melodies, but this CD does not contain them. At best, it's pleasant background music, nothing special.
No, please..........2004-05-17
Wow, what is this bilge?
An enjoyable listen.......2002-01-17
This CD can best be described as a good smooth jazz tribute to Brian Wilson.
It should be noted that several of the tracks are lesser known Wilson songs that the casual fan may not recognize, but are songs that serious fans will appreciate.
The album falls short only in the somewhat bland version of title song, and in the Clarke Burroghs Groups brilliant, but incomplete (song snippet) versions of a Smile era songs.

Jacky Terrasson has built a reputation as a lean and mean pianist with the ability to inject lightening bolts of energy into his work. On What It Is, however, Terrasson has taken a decidedly different direction. Rather than calling on his excellent trio, he has chosen to flesh out his band with the addition of everything from flute to guitar to harmonica. While this certainly allows Terrasson to flex his arranging muscles, many of these compositions feel watered down and lacking the intensity and exploration that has been his trademark on previous work. The opening track, "Sam's Song," sways with a 1970s feel that's part fusion, part smooth. The following cut, "What's Wrong with You," picks up the pace, as Terrasson and saxophonist Michael Brecker blaze through a note-burner that highlights Terrasson's remarkable speed and dexterity. Terrasson's curious, harmonica-led take on Pink Floyd's "Money" is slightly interesting, but gets bogged down by languid pacing, while a stab at Ravel's "Bolero" misses the mark entirely. The rest of the LP is a hodgepodge of different styles--touches of Latin and fusion fill out the sound, but don't do enough to add that crucial Terrasson spark to the work. --S. Duda
Customer Reviews:
Cheesy and meandering...with chimes aplenty!.......2000-01-11
This is a surprisingly poor showing from a remarkable talent. Cheesy and meandering, with the scattered flashes of brilliance only adding insult to injury. And I actually like JT's rhodes playing a quite a bit, so this is not just a hardline anti-fusion perspective. First of all, will someone please hide Mino Cinelu's chimes next time he enters the studio? His incessant and tasteless use of this already questionable device is totally gratuitous, and adds considerably to the cloying quality of much of What It Is.
An additional warning to any prospective buyers: be advised, several tunes feature a harmonica/flute front line...draw your own conclusions.
It's as Tasty as the Trio.......1999-08-04
What I like so much about this effort is how Jacky's edge and exploration still stand out with the bigger line-up. His piano and arranging have the authority to take new influences and really make them fly. I never wanted to hear another Bolero again...until I heard his. But it's his work on keys, with some unexpectedly fine electric piano here, that always pleases. Impatient and brilliant, complex yet highly listenable, he's the real thing. Homogenized playlists at "world" music radio stations could use an injection of what he's done on this disc to wake up the ears they're wearing out through repetition.
Kudos to Jacky Terrasson........1999-07-14
I think this is a great album. I give Jacky kudos for breathing new life into his work. If you've seen Jacky perform in concert, you'll understand perfectly what he's trying to achieve with this latest album. With this new album, he's not afraid to go out on the limb and try new sounds. He's already proven that he's an accomplished pianist with his previous albums. It's refreshing to see him try something new, and on top of that, excel at it. BTW - I think he does a great rendition of Ravel's Bolero.
I confirm the amazon reviewer's comments.......1999-06-10
I will confirm the amazon.com reviewer's description with the exception that the rendition of Bolero is more charming than he claims. The new quintet ensemble and the tunes from the CD are impressive live, which is why I bought the CD at the venue of the show. However, the album is a letdown. The one vocal tune the only true dud of the album because the singer has one of the most irritaing voices I have ever heard. She sounds like Jimmy Scott with a really bad cold.
