5 Brel Treasures among 11 songs total including "Les Prenoms de Paris".......2005-11-02
This CD contains 11 songs total, of which 5 are among the very best chansons ever written by singer/songwriter Jacques Brel.
If you are using Jacques Brel songs to help you study French as I do, you might want to pick up a book of all his original French lyrics, such as "L'Oeuvre Integrale" (ISBN: 2221088492) or "Tout Brel" (ISBN: 2264033711). In addition, buy the Infiniment 2-CD set published by DRG Records (ASIN: B0002PUHGU) to get wonderful (but abridged) translations into English of 40 Brel songs created by Amazon.com reviewer Thelma F. Blitz.
A terrific French-English dictionary to use in studying Brel's chansons is the "Collins Robert French Unabridged Dictionary, 7th Edition" (ISBN: 0060748931). This French/English, English/French dictionary is the best one I have ever used over the past 30 years, it's truly magnificent.
"Ne me quitte pas" (Don't Leave Me) is Brel's most famous torch song, in which he uses exquisite imagery to press his suit with a girl who has already left him, descending in the end into abject desperation as he struggles to maintain a link, any link at all, with the object of his love. Frank Sinatra was moved to sing an English version of this song ("If you go away"), which unfortunately doesn't do justice to the stunning poetry of the French original. This is my favorite song of the entire Jacques Brel repertoire because of the power and the haunting beauty of the lyrics, Brel's impassioned voice and the evocative music!
"Marieke" is a nostalgic song about a first love that played out on the beaches of Belgium one summer in his teen years. It alternates charmingly between Flemish and French, the two national languages of Belgium.
"Les Prenoms de Paris" (The First Names of Paris) is a terrific, light-hearted song about being young and in love in Paris. It is rarely included in Brel's other albums, so its presence here makes just one more good reason to buy this CD.
"Quand On N'a Que L'amour" (When We Have Only Love) is Brel's quintessential theme song (circa 1960) for idealistic young lovers who believe that love conquers all, in stark contrast to Brel's later more jaded songs, ranging from "Le Prochain Amour" (also on this CD) in 1961 to "La Chanson des Vieux Amants" (Song of the Old Lovers, not on this CD) in 1967. "Quand On N'a Que L'amour" strikes a similar tone of optimism as another Brel song, "Au Printemps", which is also not included in this collection.
"Le Prochain Amour" (The Next Lover) is Brel's world-wisened and world-weary evaluation of love: "...it's good to be in love... I know just the same that the next love will be my next defeat..."
Other highly recommended Jacques Brel CDs you can find on Amazon.com include:
Title (ASIN#) No. of Songs
Quand On N'a Que L'amour (B00000IYC9) 49 songs with 32 pages of photos and essay on Brel's life and songs (3-CD set)
Infiniment (B0002PUHGU) 40 songs with wonderful English translations (2-CD set)
Olympia '61 and '64 (B000BJ7D96) 30 songs with great English translations (2-CD set)
Volume 1 - Grand Jacques (B00000DXQY) 15 songs including "Sur La Place"
Les Flamandes (B000006UOA) 21 songs
Les Bonbons (B0000AKOLD) 14 songs
Ballades Et Mots D'amour (B00003Q56T) 30 songs
Vol. 1-Special Edition (ASIN: B000042OFF) 16 songs
Master Series: Jacques Brel (B0000046O5) 16 songs (same songs as on Vol. 1-Special Edition, but at half the price)
Grand Jacques Integrale 172 Titres (B000025BD8) 172 songs (10-CD set)
What's even more fabulous than the CDs, however, is the 3 volume DVD set released in 2003: Jacques Brel: Comme quand on etait beau. (ASIN: B0000AQJPR). The set includes 7.5 hours of live and staged performances as well as interviews and home video footage. Everything that the heart of a Jacques Brel fan desires to capture the essence of this very theatrical artist in a way that an audio-only recording can not.
Also of tremendous interest: the VHS video "Jacques Brel" (ASIN: B0001P1XG4), a video biography on the life and music of Jacques Brel. Full length documentary features extensive live footage and interviews with Brel himself as well as his daughter and associates. It is also available on DVD, but only from Films Media Group.

Beware; Excerpts.......2006-12-05
I bought this thinking it was the entire show. It's missing some of my favorite songs, such as "Rainbow Tour." Elaine Paige is great, but I don't care much for David Essex as Che.
THE HIGHLIGHTS DISC OF THE ORIGINAL LONDON PRODUCTION.......2005-09-17
Over the years Andrew Lloyd Webber has made many musicals, some more successful and appealing to the public than the others. Most people will, however, agree that "Evita" remains one of his most satisfying works to this date. Numerous reasons confirm this statement. Just like in its predecessor "Jesus Christ Superstar", "Evita" is almost entirely sung-through; the lyrics are witty and appropriate; the subject matter is again a personality larger-than-life who rises from obscurity and dies at the peak of its fame, thus becoming a legend; the score is captivating and appealing to the listener, at home or in the theatre.
Following the suit of the Superstar, ALW and Tim Rice first published Evita as an album, which appeared in 1976. It was an instant success and soon afterwards the preparations began to put it on the stage. The veteran of the musical theatre direction, Hal Prince, accepted the offer to adapt the original album and Elaine Paige, then an unknown actress and musical theatre performer was cast in the role of Evita. The show premiered in London in 1978, winning acclaiming reviews and numerous awards. And yet, since the concept album was selling so well, the authors felt it unnecessary to release another full version of Evita, with the London cast. That is why we only have this highlights 53-minute recording of the original London production. The story of Evita is widely known, but for those who are new to this let's repeat the essentials: We follow the life story of Eva Duarte Peron, wife of post-World war two president of Argentina, Juan Peron. However, the musical is very loosely based on the actual life of the real Evita. The story follows Evita from the day of her death in July 1952, and then we have flashbacks until that moment, covering her coming to Buenos Aires, alleged love affairs, meeting Peron, being the first lady and dying of cancer at 33.
Being the first theatre version of the somewhat revised concept album material, this disc is not the best recording available. There are several drawbacks. First, it lacks a great part of the show, since all we have here are snippets, i.e., the main musical numbers, meaning it is a bit difficult to follow the story if you are a first-time listener, even though the booklet provides a basic story outline. One of the other obvious weaknesses is the minimalist orchestrations used on this recording. After the lush and epic sound of the concept album featuring the London philharmonics and a rock band, here we have the usual pit orchestra, consisting of only the basic instruments. Thus the beauty of the score remains somewhat lost and is only traceable in hints. The authors seem to be aware of it, since for the upcoming Broadway recording of the show, the orchestrations were improved and sounded clearer.
In addition, the cast performance here is also mixed. Although the role of Eva Peron raised Elaine Paige to stardom, I find her performance not the best, simply because her voice sounds too young. With time her vocal abilities matured, but here she just doesn't reach a much needed uncompromising determination of the character, the way Patti LuPone did on Broadway or Julie Covington on the original album. That is not to say that Elaine performance here is altogether bad, but it could have been much better. David Essex, on the other hand, is a very good Che. He has the strong vocal power Colm Wilkonson and Antonio Banderas both demonstrated in their interpretation, which leaves one wondering why was Mandy Patinkin cast in the role when the show was transferred to Broadway, since he had a very light and unpleasant voice. Joss Ackland, an esteemed British actor is a well chosen Peron, with a suitable dark note in his performance.
The CD comes with a couple of the production photos, but no lyrics are included.
For those of you who are getting acquainted with the story of Eva Peron for the first time I must point out: Bear in mind that this musical is only loosely based on the life of the real Evita. As much as Tim Rice's lyrics are craftily made, they lack a lot of historical accuracy. As a historian I became very interested in Eva Peron's life story so I did some research after seeing the movie. It turned out that the authors based their entire work on a single book called EVITA: THE WOMAN WITH A WHIP by Mary Main. It was based on rumors, lies and myths, written with the single purpose of slandering Eva Peron as much as possible. It contains no footnotes and no bibliography. The authors used it mainly because it was one of the few books available on the subject in the English language during the 70-is. So one should be very careful in making any conclusions based on the musical or the movie alone.
So this disk is more of a welcomed addition for the collectors of the Evita cast recordings, rather than a first-choice album for the new listeners. The latter should get one of the three available 2-CD albums: the 1976 concept recording with Julie Covington, the 1979 Broadway cast with the best Evita of them all, the Tony-winning Patti LuPone, or the very good 1996 movie soundtrack with Madonna in the lead. They all have the complete score and are much more satisfying than this highlights album.
Not the Original Broadway Cast, but not bad.......2005-08-17
This soundtrack does not, in my opinion, rate as high as the Original Broadway Cast album with Mandy Patinkin and Patti Lupone, but it is not too bad. It is incomplete, which was a disappointment. Elaine Page doesn't hold a candle to Patti Lupone as Evita, and the Che leaves much to be desired. The highlight of this album is "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" which is simply superb. It was worth buying the cd just for that song. Some of the lyrics are different, which was interesting to hear, because they changed them around a bit when Evita was brought to the US. If you are an Evita lover I would suggest this album, but if you are just being introduced to Evita I would suggest going with the Patti Lupone and Mandy Patinkin cd.
Misleading CD cover.......2005-05-07
I wanted the complete Evita soundtrack, and this rendition was terribly disappointing. The cd ends abruptly mid story. Voices are spectacular of course, but the cover suggests this is the original London peformance and a buyer, like me, expects the entire musical score. I wouldn't buy this again.
MISSING SO MANY GOOD SONGS.......2004-07-11
THANK GOODNESS FOR THE BROADWAY PRODUCTION OF EVITA! THIS MUSCIAL IS VERY GOOD, YET IT HAS SOME WEAK SPOTS, BUT THAT DOSN'T MEAN LONDON SHOULD TAKE THEM OUT IN THE FIRST STAGE PRODUCTION OF EVITA. THERE ARE A LOT OF MISTAKES AND THINGS THEY SHOULD OF ADDED. HERE'S A LIST.
*THEY SHOULD OF ADDED 'RAINBOR TOUR' I LOVE THAT SONG
*BUENOS AIRES SHOULD OF BEEN LONGER
*A NEW ARGETINA SHOULD OF BEEN LONGER
*THEY SHOULD OF ADDED 'DICE ARE ROLLING" ANYTHING THAT HAS THE 'A NEW ARGETINA' MUSIC I JUST LOVE.
*THE COVER LOOKS TOO OLD. IF THEY WERE GONNA PUT IT ON A CD, THEY SHOULD OF MADE A NEW LOOK OR COVER.
*IT SHOULD OF HAD 23 SONGS INSTEAD OF 15
THERE ARE A LOT MORE REASONS WHY THIS CD WAS DREADFULL BUT I DON'T WANT TO WASTE YOUR TIME. I SAY BUY THE ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST WITH THE EXELLENT PATTIE LuPONE. WHO CARES ABOUT THAT ESSEX GUY.

Wim at his best.......2005-08-15
I have been a big fan of Wim for many years.
I bought the box set featuring his 13 first CDs, and this is my favorite by a good margin. While Wim's music can be amazing, consistency has never been his strong point in my book.
The quality of his music varies from track to track, and album to album, but this one is very good throughout, in slow and more lively songs.
I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to experience Wim at his best, especially if you never bought any of his many albums.
piano and voice.......2004-08-24
the first number is giving you a real trance, it makes you rest and you want to play it over and over...I like to work on it.. casting no shadow...
a GREAT cd. I know his music for a LONG time. This is one of the best. If you like this piano, buy jerimiades....
Very good!.......2004-05-19
Another fine CD of piano-voice music by Wim Mertens(Years Without History Vol.2 is exellent!).Released in 1986 and dedicated to Wim's father it contains 7 compositions,of which Casting No Shadow and A Tiels Leis are among his finest melodies.Other compositions are very good as well and I strongly recommend this CD to all Mertens' music lovers

Customer Reviews:
Lanza in (mostly) top form.......2004-11-28
This is a "twofer" CD, consisting of the 1955 soundtrack to the movie Serenade and the 1956 Cavalcade of Show Tunes album. Before I go any further, however, I should acknowledge that I was one of the liner note writers for this release. But I have no financial interest in the CD, and am simply reviewing it here because to date no one else has commented on it!
Serenade marked Lanza's return to films after an absence of three years, and revealed a voice that had darkened considerably, while still retaining its brilliant upper register. Stylistically, this is also a much-improved artist in many respects from the sometimes-wayward tenor of the early 1950s. Anyone who compares Lanza's superbly operatic renditions here of Amor Ti Vieta, Lamento di Federico, and O Paradiso with his earlier versions (all featured on the CD Mario Lanza Sings Opera Arias and Duets) will immediately detect the new-found control in his singing.
That's not to say that all of the Serenade material is outstanding. Lanza's renditions of Nessun Dorma, O Soave Fanciulla, Di Quella Pira, and the title song are below par, with the tenor uncharacteristically strained in the upper register and rough in his approach. But redeeming everything are the oustanding renditions of the arias mentioned in the previous paragraph, together with Lanza's sensitive singing of Di Rigori Armato from Der Rosenkavalier, a superb Torna a Surriento, and an unsurpassed Dio! Mi Potevi Scagliar from Otello. Lanza also recorded the Act III duet from Otello with Licia Albanese for this film, but time constraints have reduced it to a brief extract here. (The entire duet, however, can be heard on the aforementioned Arias & Duets CD.)
The other album featured here showcases the romantic side of Lanza. Beautifully recorded, Cavalcade includes passionate renditions of Yours is My Heart Alone, Only a Rose, Will You Remember, and other selections from operetta and musical comedy. Although Lanza may indeed be *too* zestful here for some tastes, vocally at least, he is at the height of his powers. The voice is rich and round - gloriously consistent throughout its registers - and the abundance of effortless B flats, Bs, and even a high C reveal a tenor in formidable form.
Highly recommended.

Colorful and humorous disco album.......2003-09-19
This flamboyant album blending disco, Caribbean and Latin American rhythms is full of fun, puns and tongue-in-chic humour. It has now been substantially enhanced with the addition of several 12-inch remixes that were previously only available as rare vinyl singles.
There's a lovely interaction between the lead vocals of August Darnell and the Coconuts who are Brooksie Wells, Lourdes Cotto, Adriana Kaegi and Fonda Rae and the instrumental mix includes piano, guitar, vibes, percussion, bass and drums.
Maladie d'Amour is charming and soulful, while the title track has Kid Creole singing through what sounds like a vocoder with the Coconuts' vocal coming through much stronger. Darrio is a gentle lilting disco number with the Coconuts imploring Darrio to get them into Studio 54, whilst Lilli Marlene is the old classic sung in the original German and given the disco treatment, quite a charming little number.
My favorite is Bogota Affair, a lovely song sung alternately in English and Spanish, about an elusive girlfriend that was seen in Bogota when she was supposed to be in Havana. Halfway through, the rhythm changes from brassy disco into a fast, lilting Latin style.
Although the album as a whole is uneven, the aforementioned tracks and others like Calypso Pan-American make this a very enjoyable album. If you like clever, intelligent lyrics over disco with a dash of Caribbean and Latin beats, you'll love Off The Coast Of Me.
Endearing, but still...........2002-08-24
As a great fan of The Kid (and his Babes) I'm happy that this obscure, freshman LP was re-released...it's sweet and infectious in places, but it also has the hollow ring of a demo LP - which it was. Only the milestone "Maladie D'Amour" sounds fully developed, with its Savanah Band-esque lushness. I long for an extended version of this song, but not the "mutant disco version" included here as a bonus track...
Compared to their subsequent LPs, this one is musically pretty
weak. As a collection it is disjointed and never really delivers a punch. "Darrio" is particularly annoying, with the whinny, first-generation Babes lacking any of the savoir faire of the next crop of girlz. Mister Softee sounds like it was recorded in a garage...not so bad if you pretend you're actually in there with 'em!
Along with the classic "Maladie D'Amour", "Yolanda" is a real standout here - a slow-down, lowdown groove with terrific thematic feeling derived from the lyrics and vocals (boy yearns for girl; girl teases boy and refuses him) and the song's breezy West Indian tempo.
"Off The Coast Of Me" has a charm all its own, with a faraway, muted sound that's like a mild dose of Martin Denny. Here we get our first real exposure to The Babes, in perfect, prototypical form: "...I'm takin' a trip - off the coast of me..."
"Lili Marlene" is a whacky pop tune with its German lyrics and campy "Bavarian Karaoke" sound...
"Bogota Affair" holds up well, and is a song that would have been a real knockout had it been born on one of the Kid's later, more musically mature recordings. Its dramatic shift from uptempo to down in the second half is sheer brilliance! The same can be said of the infectious, giddy "Calypso Pan American", another Savanah-esque number, showing what The Kid could do with a low budget production. If only he had more resources at his disposal,
and perhaps some direction from a more experienced studio crew...
But, hey, that's what makes this LP worth the wait, and worth your while...this is truly fresh, original urban hipster stuff a la 1980!
BUY IT.
Dr. Buzzard Goes to the Bahamas.......2002-08-04
One of August Darnell's great achievements, this LP is filled to the brim with great songs, funny/smart lyrics, & Latin disco beats, all brought to you beneath those campy Xavier Cugat-inspired arrangements he'd mastered during his tenure with DR. BUZZARD'S ORIGINAL SAVANNAH BAND. And there's a modern downtown vibe mixed in here too, making this almost like JAMES WHITE & THE BLACKS gone giddily-happy. Never again would the KID be this appealing: shelving his much-beloved 70s disco for (ack!) faux-reggae on his next album, he'd start circling toward the deep end of the Top 40 chart. A decade or so later he'd end up a boring old Clinton-apologist (hell he even played a flippin' White House picnic in '96). But here, he's in top form. Hands down, this is the most fun record ZE ever released - and that's not for lack of stiff competition! The extra 12" cuts and mixes are cool too . . . I could dance all night to this stuff.

Album Description
UK pressing of this 2006 release, the third album from Long Island's Brand New featuring one bonus track: 'Luca' (Reprisal Version). Formed in 2001, Long Island's Brand New have built a massive cult following, largely from a notorious live show and relentless touring. The band's two previous albums (released on indie Triple Crown) have sold over 750,000 copies in the USA. Brand New's last album (Deja Entendu) is considered by many as one of this decade's breakout rock releases. 'The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows' became a favorite with MTV and Fuse, as well as a staple with many Modern Rock stations. Its follow up single 'Sic Transit Gloria' became a massive underground hit, fueled by a Marc Webb directed video. The band graced the cover of Alternative Press twice during this release and picked up ink in Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, Spin and The New York Times. The summer of 2006 marked the band's first US tour in three years. The sellout dates showcased several of the new album tracks, including 'Sowing Season (Yeah),' 'Degausser' and 'You Won't Know.' Brand New returns to the road with Dashboard Confessional. The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me was produced by the band and longtime friend Mike Sapone. Mixing duties were covered by Rich Costey, whose credits include Muse, Franz Ferdinand and The Mars Volta. Polydor.

Great compilation overall.......2003-05-13
It could be easy to pass Real Life off as a one-hit wonder (Send Me An Angel,) but it just wouldn't be right. Sure, that song's the highlight of the band's career, but they also whipped out some other excellent tracks, many of which are available on this compilation.
As another reviewer stated, the versions of these songs available in this compilation are mostly remixes and edits. If you want the original versions of Send Me An Angel and/or Catch Me I'm Falling, you should get Heartland, the band's 1983 debut album. Of course, the former was radically popular, so it can be found on some eighties compilations (I believe New Wave Hits of the Eighties Volume Eleven has it.)
This is an excellent compilation overall, but even it has its shortcomings. What's the compilation called? Send Me An Angel. You get two versions of the track (the 1989 remix version and an extended dance mix version (the highlight of the disc,)) but the original version is missing in action. Also, it is VERY short for a CD compilation. The total time is only about 45:00, and you can fit 80:00 onto a single CD. Surely the band had other excellent songs that could have been used to fill the extra space. Also, the insert contains very little information - just a tracklist and not much more. It doesn't say what songs are remixes and what ones are originals. Why couldn't the booklet have the band's history or something like that? Another interesting note - This compilation is available with two different covers - A black gothic-looking one, and one that has a guy in a toga and a dog with fairy wings on a park bench. Not sure why there are two covers.
Final verdict? If you're into good new wave rock, this is the compilation for you. Sure, the original version of Send Me An Angel isn't here, but two versions present are as good, if not better than the original. If you're desperate for the original version, get Heartland or New Wave Hits of the Eighties Volume Eleven. This compilation is an excellent example of why eighties music was pure excellent, and modern music is junk.
Thank Heavens that GOD "SEND ME AN ANGEL".......2001-07-19
First time I listened them in primary school and it was perfect. Nothing changed until now. I love music they play and keep their cds in my special shelf for treasures.
Incredible.......2000-03-09

Grrrrr8!.......2003-07-24
Overall, I think Mya has a great voice. It goes along well with Blackstreet and Blinky-Blink. We saw the Rugrats Movie and this is the only song we liked off the soundtrack!! We luv u Mya!!
Mya and Blackstreet, a great headliner.......2000-03-18
"Take Me There" really puts the fun back into r&b and soul. It lets young children get into the fun of r&b really early yet it still holds the essence of pure, classic r&b for the real fan. "Take Me There" brings joy with it's catchy ballads by Blackstreet and the amazing voice of Mya not forgetting her beautiful smile. The song takes me somewhere else and it'll take you there too.
Love it.......1999-12-03
The only song I have heard by Blinky Blink is "Take Me There" But I love it! I did a dance to it last year for jazz and everyone loved us! The song was cute, the dance was cute a perfect combo! I think this song is PERFECT If you want a perfect gift for a younger kid that likes the newer music "Take Me There" My Blinky Blink is the best!
I think it is a really good single overall........1999-05-31
This single is great for listening and dancing. I brought it to our school dance, and you have no idea how popular it is. Even now, about two months after it was released, it is really cool. GET THIS NOW!!!
