5 out of 5 stars Not country, but a must have!.......2002-01-12

This combines pretty much two hard to get Kristofferson CD's, Reposessed and Third world Warrior. I know Third World Warrior is out of print because I paid a fourtune for a copy when my Macaw got ahold of mine, and I listen the Reposessed CD almost every night.I think Reposessed may also be out of print. I'd snap this up as fast as I could cause when it's gone so is your chance at some great Kristofferson music. Be aware tho that this is not really a country CD, one it's political, and two it treads closer to his rock style. I love these CD's and some of the songs on them are among my favorite Kristofferson material.

5 out of 5 stars Wrong title, great CD.......2001-08-27

I don't know why they picked the title "Country Collection"
for this CD. Kris is considered a country artist (although he treads
the borders of rock and folk as well), but this is not a collection of
his most 'country' songs. Rather this CD combines two of his lesser
known albums, "Repossessed" from 1986 and "Third World
Warrior" from 1990.

Although his music was always political, this
period is when it was the most explicitly so. "Shipwrecked in the
Eighties" was dedicated to the Vietnam vets. "They Killed
Him" is about all those activists who were assassinated (King,
Ghandi, Christ). The other songs on "Repossessed" are along
the same vein, most show Kristofferson's trademark sarcastic
cynicism. "The Heart" and "Love is the Way" are a
bit more upbeat.

"Third World Warrior" is something of a
concept album about Reagon's dirty war in Nicaragua. Given that, the
album is surprisingly accessible and universal. "The Hero"
and "Don't Let the Bastards (Get You Down)" are among the
better songs. Willie Nelson duets on the tribute "Jesse
Jackson".

This is great music. My only reservation is that
"Third World Warrior" being a concept album limits how well
these two fit together. However, both albums are now out of print and
not likely to be reissued soon. Given that, Kristofferson fans will
likely appreciate this one.

This CD is a great way to recall a group that is no more. If you already own Maverick CD's the repeat tracks are still worth it to have this CD. Even the tracks in Spanish that I can only translate a word or two are fantastic. If you can hear you will enjoy the fantastic musicianship although you cannot understand the words. This CD is the best $4 bucks I've ever spent and lasts much longer than an expensive coffee. TLKeith in Beautiful Berea

5 out of 5 stars Classic Patsy Cline: Great Music, Exceptional Sound.......2001-04-07

Thirty-eight years after her tragic death, Patsy Cline is a beloved figure in the history of American music. Her beautiful voice, and emotion-filled recordings, has captured the hearts of fans the world over. Patsy's worldwide appeal is highlighted by this CD, a release from the European "Universal Masters Collection" series presenting the best in popular music. A variation on the US "20th Century Masters, The Millennium Collection" release, this edition presents a selection of 18 of the best recordings from Patsy's Decca Records catalogue. In addition to such great hits as "I Fall To Pieces," "She's Got You," "Walkin' After Midnight," and the hauntingly beautiful "Sweet Dreams (of You)," are many gems which originally appeared as album cuts: Patsy's fabulous versions of the Hank Williams classics "Your Cheatin' Heart" and "Half as Much." Her take on the Pop standards "Heartaches" and "Always." Great renditions of the Country classics "I Love You So Much It Hurts" and "Crazy Arms." Plus, hits not included on the "12 Greatest Hits" release: "When I Get Through With You," "Imagine That" and "He Called Me Baby." To top it all off, this release features the rare 1962 recording of "You're Stronger Than Me," a ballad arrangement replete with strings, which has only appeared on the 1986 MCA album "Songwriter's Tribute" and the 1991 MCA 4-CD "Patsy Cline Collection" Box Set. The sound quality is exceptional and brings out many nuances not heard in other releases. The inserts include several rare pictures from her original album cover photo sessions and a brief essay by Colin Escott. Whether you're a new fan discovering, or a longtime fan remembering, this collection of Classic Patsy Cline should be at the top of your Amazon.com Wish List.

4 out of 5 stars Trisha Yearwood essentials.......2005-06-07

I bought this import version of Songbook a few years ago. It's the original album with the 12 songs, plus 6 other tracks. These tracks include "Believe Me Baby (I Lied)", "A Lover is Forever", "On A Bus To St. Cloud", "You Can Sleep While I Drive", and "The Flame" and "Save The Land". It's nice to see some of her non bigger hits represented here, as they can stand up to the others just as well. New tracks include "How Do I Live", a monster hit, as well as the duet with Garth Brooks "In Anothers Eyes", and the uptempo top 10 hit "Perfect Love". Overall a nice collection!

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant collection with extra tracks.......2003-08-25

Trisha Yearwood, at her best, is the finest of all contemporary country singers. This compilation contains many of the songs that established her as a major star, beginning with She's in love the boy - a song that enabled Trisha to become one of the few ladies in the history of country music to top the American country chart with their first single.

Trisha's other country number one hits featured here include Thinking about you and An American girl (X's and O's). Many of the other songs were country top ten hits for Trisha. How do I live was a huge country hit for Trisha, but it was LeAnn Rimes who had the American pop hit (she also had a big UK pop hit with the song) - but Trisha's version was also a big hit in some other countries around the world, as well as being a minor UK hit. I love both versions of the song but I slightly prefer Trisha's version to LeAnn's. Really, there's not much to choose between them.

One of my particular favorites is The song remembers when - about how you remember particular events in your life when you hear a particular song. There are many other fine songs including Wrong side of Memphis, Walkaway Joe, The woman before me and a duet with Garth Brooks (In another's eyes).

The European edition (which I have) contains five bonus tracks not available on the American edition. These include two tracks from Trisha's album Everybody knows (Believe me baby I lied, A lover is forever) together with two tracks from her album Thinking about you (On a bus to St Cloud, You can sleep while I drive). More significantly, it includes The flame, which is not available on any of Trisha's standard albums. It was originally released on the Olympic album One voice and later reissued on the compilation Your love amazes me.

This Australian edition contains all the above tracks plus Save the land, a duet with Australia's own country star, Lee Kernaghan.

5 out of 5 stars Hits collection with six more tracks than American version.......2003-06-20

If Linda Ronstadt had gotten started in the '90s instead of the '60s, she'd be Trisha Yearwood. Well not really, but we wouldn't need both of them. Besides their obviously similar sopranos, they share other vocal traits, be it a zestful exhuberance on a toe-tapper or an aching sensivity on a MOR ballad. And while neither write their own material, they both possess the impressive ability to regularly interpret a tune better than the originator.

For Yearwood, that also includes being able to select first-rate material. The hits assembled on (Songbook) are some of the most stimulating to emerge from Nashville in the '90s. "She's In Love With The Boy" is a light-hearted white-trash tale where young love conquers all while "XXX's and OOO's" cheerfully depicts a working woman trying to balance it all in a hectic modern world - with a little help from Aretha Franklin and Patsy Cline. Those romps are offset by some stunning ballads; in particular, the tragic teen saga "Walk Away Joe," with lovely harmonies from Don Henley, and the comparitive yet understanding "The Woman Before Me." Fast or slow, jovial or serious, all are deserved hits.

In addition to the prior hits, (Songbook) offers three new selections. The first single, "How Do I Live," from the film Con Air, is a delightfully inspirational ode of devotion. It is easy to see why Yearwood's womanly version has beaten LeAnn Rimes' rival girlish version on the country charts (age does wonders for believability when it comes to love songs). Yet even more high profile than that Con Air song battle is the second single, "In Another's Eyes," which presents the mega-event pairing of Yearwood with Garth Brooks. Too bad the song itself is so ordinary. Likewise, the uptempo third new track, "Perfect Love," with lines such as "yeah, this is a perfect love, we're doing nothing, but, what a perfect love does..." Yadda, yadda, yadda.

If Yearwood wanted another uptempo number to add some pep to this ballad-heavy collection, she should have gone with the raucous "That's What I Like About You" from her 1991 self-titled debut album. Still, all of the prior hits found here are just as good (if not quite as infectious). For those consumers of pop and adult contemporary who want to add a little country to their diet, (Songbook) is a great place to start.

This import version contains six more tracks than the American release. Of those, only "Believe Me Baby, I Lied" was a hit, and only it and "On A Bus To St. Cloud" are memorable. Do yourself a favor and buy the cheaper, domestic version instead. "Believe Me Baby, I Lied" will surely be on a second volume of Trisha hits in the next couple of years.

      5 out of 5 stars Songbook.......2001-03-19

This is the import copy of Songbook A Collection of Hits, a much more complete version that the domestic. It contains the exact same 12 tracks as the US version, but it also contains 6 extra tracks that were not available on the US version. The US version missed a lot of her hits, like Believe Me Baby (I Lied), You Can Sleep While I Drive, On A Bus To St. Cloud, etc, and although this collection is still missing some of her hits (ex: Everybody Knows) it is more complete.

The three new songs did very well, How Do I Live, In Anothers Eyes and Perfect Love all hit #1. When this CD was released Trisha was one of the hottest things going in country, in my opinion she still is, but the industry tends to focus on newer acts and more popular ones, but I think Trisha is the best. The CD also contains her hits like The Song Remembers When, Wrong Side Of Memphis, The Woman Before Me, Thinkin About You, Down On My Knees, Shes In Love With The Boy, Walkaway Joe, XXX's and OOO's, Like we Never Had A Broken Heart, and the extra tracks are A Lover Is Forever, Believe Me Baby I Lied, On A Bus To St Cloud, You Can Sleep While I Drive, The Flame, and Save The Land. Its a pretty penny but its worth it if you want a more complete Trisha Yearwood collection.

      5 out of 5 stars A brilliant completion of Trisha's best.......1999-09-24

This CD has many of Trisha's greatest songs on it. It incudes her brilliant #1 debut single "She's In Love With The Boy" and it takes you to her recent #1's "perfect Love" and "how Do I Live". This is the perfect CD for any country fan. Trisha definately displays the magnitude and power of her talent with this CD.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Treasures (almost) and Hungry again.......2005-04-13

In the nineties, after Dolly parted company with Columbia, she recorded one album for the short-lived Rising Tide label (Treasures) and one album for MCA (Hungry again) before teaming up with Sugar Hill for a series of immensely successful albums beginning with Grass id blue. This compilation contains nine of the eleven tracks from Treasures together with all twelve from Hungry again, but the tracks have been jumbled up a bit - tracks 1 to 5, 7, 9, 10 and 12 are from Treasures while 6, 8, 11 and 13 to 21 are from Hungry again, but I'll review the tracks based on their original albums.

By the time Dolly recorded Treasures, her new singles were no longer being played on radio, so she took the opportunity to record covers of some of her favorite songs. With a star-studded cast of guests, the results are impressive.

On Peace train (a Cat Stevens song), Dolly is backed by Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Some of Dolly's fans may feel that the arrangement is a little over the top, but anybody who has listened to LBM's own music (as I have) will appreciate it. The other tracks from Treasures sound more typical of Dolly's music, including excellent covers of Today I started loving you again (the often-covered Merle Haggard song that provided Sammi Smith with a top ten American country hit in the seventies), Before the next teardrop falls (Freddy Fender), Behind closed doors (Charlie Rich), Don't let me cross over (Carl and Pearl Butler), Satin sheets (Jeanne Pruett) and For the good times (Kris Kristofferson).

After the goldrush (a Neil Young song) was recorded by Dolly with Linda and Emmylou for their second Trio album, but after a decision was taken not to release it, Dolly recorded a solo version and included it on this album. The second Trio album was eventually released, several years after it was originally recorded, complete with the Trio version of After the goldrush. All those songs are wonderful, but best of the lot is Just when I needed you most, a Randy Van Warmer hit from the seventies, which features Alison Krauss and John Sebastian. Dolly originally wanted this to be a Trio song, but it didn't work that way. However, it works superbly here. Dolly's versions of Something's burning (Kenny Rogers and the First edition) and Walking on sunshine (Katrina and the waves) appeared on Treasures but were omitted from this compilation.

For some, Dolly's current credibility began with the outstanding Grass is blue album, but the Hugry again album is the one that re-launched her career in Britain (sadly, it didn't do much in America). It was with the Hungry again album that Dolly returned to her country roots, beginning with the excellent title track and continuing with a whole series of outstanding songs, all in a traditional country style with only a little contemporary flavor. Some have a touch of bluegrass, showing the direction her music would take next. My particular favorite is Blue valley songbird, which was the inspiration for a movie of the same title, and which was about a struggling singer and songwriter. At the time of its release, this was the best Dolly solo album for 20 years, and it's also just as good as those that followed.

If you missed out on the original albums when they were previously available, you now have another chance to buy them, this time at a budget price.
