4 out of 5 stars Tyrese- Alter Ego.......2007-06-20

I really dont know why so many people ragged on this album. There is alot to be said about it thats for sure. But in my opinion i think it was almost as good as 2000 Watts. I mean the R&B album on Alter Ego alone could win a grammy. Even though it only lasts ten tracks. But it is still his best R&B music to date, but thats only if you grade the R&B disc by itself. Because even though i do think that Tyrese can flow with his rapping game, i dont think he did this album right. I think it would have been smarter to do a whole R&B album with a few rap tracks scattered in the mix. Cause like i said, his R&B songs this time around are flawless. But with the Rap disc, i believe he should have tried to stick with tracks similar to the Kanye West type of beat on "Roses", which could have easily been a Kanye track. I mean "Roses" is a really good rap track, along with the smooth melodic Game assisted "Ghetto Dayz" which will be that summer jam being blasted out of car windows. On "Ghetto Dayz" you can really tell that Black Ty is speaking from expieriences. You can really feel his flow on that track and he did a good job with the writing. And Game really killed that track to. But those are really the only two standouts on the rap disc. And the thing about the rap disc is i think he went a bit far with the whole "Black Ty" thing. I mean, Tyrese is one of my favorite artists of all time, but i think that the whole Black Ty thing was overboard just a little bit. The man can flow, i wont deny that, but just try to not be so gangsta with it next time around, and give us more R&B. Speaking of R&B though, that disc is flawless. The single "One" could possibly be his best single ever, its one of those songs that just makes you wanna sing. And then there is the heart wrenching "Come Back To Me Shawty" which he really lets his vocals ring on this track which is a good thing. And then there is the Johnta' Austin written "Gotta Get You" which is that story of man putting everything into a relationship but she still manages to push him away, which everyone can relate to in some way. And then there is the R.Kelly produced "Hurry Up" which is one of the many baby making tracks on this disc, and it has that R.Kelly signature raindrop beat. I mean like i said the R&B disc is Tyreses best work to date, and you can play the disc all the way through. Overall the album as a whole is good, but if he would have choosen a few other rap tracks instead of the hardcore gangsta one and made some more mellow beats that would have been good, or if he would have made a whole R&B album with some rap tracks mixed in that would haven been cool to. Buy it if not for the rap, you have to get the R&B disc because it is truly flawless. BUY IT!

5 out of 5 stars Good stuff.......2007-05-09

I really liked disc one. It's worth the price alone and I wish he had more than 10 tracks on it. I agree his rapping isn't great, but it's not horrible either. Disk 1 alone is one of the best R&B on a single album i've heard in a while. Keep it up Tyrese. Black Ty can make a few cameos in the future but no full albums!

4 out of 5 stars 'Ghetto Love'.......2007-04-27

I love tyrese's cd alter ego. the 1st cd (the slow jams) is all that. I just dont understand the negative feedback. i bought this cd in feb. and havent taken it out of the cd player in my truck yet. I listen to it everyday. Tyrese is 'ghetto' as hell but it works for him and he really puts it down on these songs. He has a beautiful voice. Now i havent listened to the rap cd yet but i never saw tyrese as a rapper anyway and to be honest i dont care to listen to it. A few of the songs could be a little bit better but im a 'die hard' lover of his voice so it does it for me. I rate this cd a 4, for the first cd alone.

2 out of 5 stars Miracle Ear customers have got it good right now.......2007-04-23

My brother told me that Tyrese had a new album long before I knew about it. He went on to tell me that the album is called Alter Ego and that it's a double-disc: the first disc is Tyrese singing normally, while the second disc is him RAPPING as his alter-ego, Black-Ty. THEN my brother told me that Black-Ty's rapping is so bad that he'd rather listen to Kevin Federline. If that sounds harsh, it's actually pretty accurate.

But the sad thing is, the singing disc really isn't all that. It's a slim ten tracks, but there still really are no standouts. It's the same story with Tyrese: he's got one hell of a voice, but his lyrics are just terrible (Ruben Studdard would later follow in his footsteps, but I digress). I mean, "One" and the Lil Jon-assisted "Turn Ya Out" are okay, but they're no classics. "Better to Know" is a ridiculous song about having a lady as a F buddy rather than a girlfriend, and "Signs of Love Makin' Part 2" isn't much more interesting than its predecessor. Finally, "Hurry Up" doesn't rank as one of R. Kelly's best compositions.

As far as Black-Ty's disc, well, there are so many weak bars here that XXL could publish an entire Step Your Rap Game Up ISSUE with them (for example: "I ain't changed; I just changed my name and added a hyphen" from "What It Is"). I mean, honestly; one listen to Tyrese's rap during the third verse of "Nobody Else" told me point blank that he was clearly not a rapper, and this disc further proves that. Songs are wack enough when he's by himself, as evidenced by the tepid "Broke A** N's", but matters get even worse when guest stars come aboard. On "Get It In", a good Scott Storch beat is wasted by below-average rapping by both Ty and Method Man. And "U Scared" (with David Banner and Lil' Scrappy) has all sorts of problems. First, it has the non-threatening chorus: "You scared/You scared/You scared, MF/You scared". Then, Banner appears to be having trouble rapping over his own beat, and the beat itself sounds like a low-key version of Dr. Dre's beat from Eve's "Let Me Blow Ya Mind".

It gets worse from there. For some strange reason, Kurupt (who hasn't been dope since "Doggy Dogg World") shows up on four tracks, and he sounds like he doesn't even want this. "Fly Away" is a dumb track that showcases Ty and Kurupt giving encouraging words about their respective rap careers over a conference call. And "Get Low" is downright disgusting, but that's probably because the song also features Too $hort (as well as Kurupt and Snoop Dogg). Snoop and Kurupt also appear on "Roll the Dice", which sounds like a throwaway 213 song.

I don't know if there's really anything else to say about Tyrese, other than he STILL needs to get some serious writers. Rap ain't looking too bright for him, and although he's a good actor, no one ever sees the movies he's in. But he'd better get his mind right soon because Alter Ego isn't worth picking up.

1 out of 5 stars Absolute Garbage.......2007-04-02

when i heard "how you gonna act like that" and "signs of love making" i really thought tyrese was a great singer and really knew how to put it down in the R&B level, also i had never heard of him before these songs besides "baby boy" which was alright. but this album is terrible. the first CD may be alright, songs such as "one" and "lights on" are really the only decent songs, if you could even use the word decent. he says 'shawty' way too much, and his 2nd disk which is all rap, is absolutely terrible, he shouldn't rap at all. if you liked "pullin me back" by chingy and have heard "one" already, don't think that this CD will make you like tyrese more, because it's a terrible CD.

Product Description

During the 1960s and 70s Philip Glass established himself as a leading artistic voice of a new musical language in the downtown loft spaces of New York's Soho District. Forty years later, Glass' early revolutionary music continues to appeal to youger generations as evidenced by Orange Mountain Music's latest release, Alter Ego performs Philip Glass. 2006 marks the Italian new music ensemble's 15th anniversary as a group. Across Europe they are widely recognized as pioneers of new and experimental music. On this 2-disc set, the group performs seminal Glass works including 4 world-premiere recordings. Featured pieces include: How Now, 600 Lines, Music in the Shape of a Square, Gradus, Music in Similar Motion, Strung Out and Music in Contrary Motion with a total length of over 135 minutes music.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Key Early Works By Glass, Unplugged.......2007-03-18

First, the performances: Alter Ego has changed the instrumentation of such early Glass masterpieces as "Contrary Motion" from analogue keyboards and amplified winds, to a more traditional, unplugged acoustic arrangment. In addition, the ensemble plays the pieces with a softer, less angular rhythmic attack than on the classic recordings. These two factors make the pieces warmer and more accessible; but purists will probably still prefer the electric and more bracing sound of the classic recordings. The playing on all the works is superb, but it must be noted that the sonic texture of these performances is quite different in feel from the classic recordings. (Compare the almost lilting, classical violin performance of "Strung Out" on this recording to the hard-edged, much longer, amplified electric violin recording on CP2 records.) So cheers to Alter Ego for bringing some new works to the public in their first performances ever ("Music in the Shape of a Square", "How Now", and "600 Lines"); but by all means seek out the original recordings of the other works to compare and contrast with the presentation here.

Second, a comment on the Orange Mountain label: the works on this disc are reissues of two CDs originally put out on the Italian Stradivarius label, so the Orange Mountain Label deserves credit for re-releasing them so they can find a wider audience. Still, while the label has made public several critical Glass works, it continues to release too many minor Glass works (like the "Undertow" soundtrack, "Orion") to the detriment of much more important unreleased works like Glass's Doris Lessing-based operas,Robert Wilson collaborations like "Monsters of Grace" and "White Raven"; and many more of his still unreleased early works (most prominently, the music he wrote over a ten year period for the Mabou Mines.)

      Product Description

For his debut CD, Dynamite Ham puts his versatility in high gear, playing over two dozen instruments in addition to lots of fun digital tweaking. The songs are all covers of songs by Frank Loesser ("Guys and Dolls," etc) and Dr. Frank of the legendary pop-punk band, The Mr T Experience. While Dynamite Ham doesn't do a lot of cross-pollination between genres within songs, the genres vary wildly from song to song. From honky-tonk to disco, bossa nova to klezmer, torch song to something we call "digitally enhanced auctioneering." Dynamite Ham's motto is "Fun sounds, serious craft." We promise the listener will not be bored; this CD is full of surprises. To our knowledge it's the first album ever to include theremin, pedal steel, musical saw, bass clarinet, glockenspiel, optigan, mbira, mandolin, accordion, banjo and washboard. The CD features cover art by the world famous comic book artist Geof Darrow ("The Matrix," "Hard Boiled" etc.) Geof's art is also featured on the disc itself which has been printed with a high-resolution thermal transfer process, creating a smooth image with rich blacks and greys like we've never seen before. And the first 500 discs are numbered!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful songs and fine playing equals a stellar disc.......2003-05-25

It's unusual in jazz for someone to release a cd of their own compositions under their name without playing on it. But that's what we've got here.

And a very fine album it is, probably equally due to the quality of the compositions and the skill of the players. Make no mistake, this is one killer band. Kenny Werner, a very supple pianist, is perfect for this kind of setting, which features a wider musical sensibility than the average jazz blowing session. Lyrical without being sentimental, he has an extremely deft touch, although he can be percussive and propulsive when need be. Billy Drewes on tenor and soprano sax and clarinet is a hugely underrated player in my opinion. Just listen to his ravishing clarinet solo on "Warmness." Marc Johnson, is, of course, one of the premier jazz double bassists on the scene today. He has that big warm tone, perfect pitch, and a grand sense of space and rhythm. Joey Baron on drums fits in perfectly. Always a master of taste and subtlety, he's just what's called for here. If there's a ringer, it's Ron Miles. He has a quite distinct concept and approach on trumpet, and one wouldn't necessarily have thought of him in this setting. But he comes through like a champ, perfectly attuned to the delicate musical sensibility that dominates this session. Whether they're playing as an ensemble or taking a solo, these players seem to have a sense of interaction that borders on the magical: there's always an interesting conversation going on.

As regards the compositions, some have a (faux?) Latin feel--especially samba ("No More Stress," although it's in 5/4 time, and "Warmness") and tango ("Worry" and "Getting Dark"). Others have a carnival-like feel ("Funny Story" and "Carousel"). Still others, a chamber-jazz sensibility ("Slow Waltz" and "Calm Down"). All are thoughtfully constructed and beautifully balanced, like a fine Belgian beer.

Congratulations to whomever had the vision to sign this unusual artist and follow through with the release of this special project.

Having been wowed by her "Lulu" at the Met years ago, the Franco Rosi "Carmen" film, her recorded Kurt Weill("Seven Deadly Sins") and bowled over by her cabaret show, "Diva on the Verge" recently in San Francisco, I eagerly ordered her newest album, "Alter Ego". I was again struck by Miss Migenes" amazing voice, talent and stylistic originality. I have played this album over and over again. It is really a Master Class in what great singing and performing is all about. Brava!
