Arhoolie's second volume of live Maddox recordings comes from 1953 radio shows for Pasadena, California's KXLA. Sixteen years after their radio debut, the Maddox Brothers & Rose still whoop it up like no others could. If anything, their already diverse array of influences expanded even further: traditionals, spirituals, bluegrass, blues, swing, boogie-woogie, Cajun, Tejano, cowboy, and honky tonk all stick to their musical ball of tape. As silly as they got---and that could be awful darn silly---their instrumental powers and Rose's tough-as-nails vocals always kept them afloat. Not many acts could (or would want to) cover Gene Autry, Hank Williams, Slim Whitman, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Molly O'Day, Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Thompson, and "Take My Hand Precious Lord" with equal intensity. --Marc Greilsamer

    Album Description

Every now and then, a fine guitar band will release one or two albums that just become so unbeatable that other hopefuls try to emulate their sound or the success. One of the finest hard-rocking guitar based bands in rock history have always been Wishbone Ash. They, fortunately, have a trail of albums that continue to thrill audiences and record buyers all over the world. With that in mind, Andy Powell and the band drove in from a snowy cold winter drive from the Northeast, and plugged in to the XM studios and delivered a show fit for a king.

The audience was made up of Ash fan club and contest winners, and the band performed a critic's choice of their most famous tracks. In this show, you hear "The King Will Come" "Blowin' Free" and "Ballad of the Beacon." The artists decided to give the radio audience and the fans a rare glimpse into their vast catalog of music, and the show was never to be repeated again, except for a very rare fan club disc....that is until now!

Andy Powell would love the Wishbone Ash folks that didn't make the gig back in 2004, have the pleasure of hearing what a few got a chance to witness. This new cd "Live On XM Satellite Radio" truly captures the band in its hard rocking forum. Dual-guitars from Andy and Muddy Manninen ( his fourth gig with the band!!!!) carry the melodies and intricate workings of each song The amazing bass of Bob Skeat and drummer extraordinaire Ray Weston continue the workout on nine selections that will thrill the listener from the first few seconds of the disc.

Like our other fine release Illuminations ( FRM 1017), Wishbone Ash continually make fine recordings, this new live album continues the tradition.

    Album Description

Wishbone Ash are continually making fine records for their millions of fans. As a gift to these worldwide "Ash" freaks, Andrew Powell & Co. have gone back to the future, and have recorded live on XM Satellite radio.

    5 out of 5 stars Pleasently Surprised.......2007-05-16

I was not expecting much from this CD having been disappointed by some of the more recent Wishbone Ash releases. What a surprise. The sound quality was good and the band played well off of the crowd. It does not have the impact and energy of the original line up (check out "Live Dates") but I did enjoy it quite a bit.

5 out of 5 stars Wishbone Ash Live At XM Satellite Radio Studio 2004!.......2006-11-27

This live broadcast recorded November 22, 2004 at the XM Satellite Radio Studios in Washington D.C. showcases just how great Wishbone Ash really are. It's very upfront and personal with original lead guitarist/vocalist Andy Powell talking with what appears to be a small audience chosen for this recording. The bulk of the songs are, for the most part, classic Wishbone Ash such as "The King Will Come", "Warrior", "Throw Down The Sword", "Blowin' Free", "Ballad Of The Beacon", "F.U.B.B.", "Living Proof" plus later tracks "Faith, Hope & Love", and "Almighty Blues". The songs are played to perfection with soaring lead guitar solos and the sound quality of this recording is nothing less than superb. Also, this was the fourth gig for new Wishbone Ash guitarist Muddy Manninen. The liner notes are few but informative. Wishbone Ash fans will definately want to add this to their cd collection.

Kurt Weill's ballet with songs is one of this century's greatest theatrical works. It has all the wit and melodic appeal of The Threepenny Opera and social conscience of Mahagonny, but more warmth and musical sophistication than either. It's also all over with in about 40 minutes. Some critics believe the piece was intended as a sort of love poem to Weill's wife, Lotte Lenya; given the tenderness of much of the music, it's hard to disagree. Lenya herself recorded the piece in the 1950s (a recording recently reissued by Sony) and this very much newer performance is welcome particularly for Anne Sofie von Otter's highly intelligent and musical way with the text. The other songs, from both Weill's Berlin and Broadway periods, make the perfect filler. --David Hurwitz

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2006-01-03

This is a very nice selection of Weill pieces showing the full range of his output. These range from the ambitious Seven Deadly Sins to songs from Happy End to some of his Broadway work. All are very interesting. The performers, particularly Von Otter, are excellent. Recommended strongly.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Weill Alternative to Lenya and Lemper.......2005-09-29

`Speak Low Songs by Kurt Weill' is a great addition to the performances of Herr Weill's works by the prominent mezzo-soprano, Anne Sofie Von Otter. I have listened to many performances by Weill specialists from the archetype, Weill's wife, Lotte Lenys, for whom many of the songs were originally written to Ute Lemper and Gisela May, who lean heavily toward Lotte Lenya's gravel-voiced interpretation of Weill's songs.

Anne Sofie Von Otter breaks with this tradition and gives us what are easily the sweetest interpretations of Weill's songs from both his German and English works, which I have heard anywhere.

The flagship performance on this disc is `Die Sieben Todsunden' (`The Seven Deadly Sins') which was a cycle of songs to be sung on the stage, accompanied by dances done by a second performer. This takes the first nine (9) tracks and is at least as good as what I have heard from Weill specialist, Lemper. This album is the first time I have noticed that there are two versions of this work, and that Ms. Von Otter is performing the version for soprano.

But, I think the most moving performances come later, especially in von Otter's performances of the three numbers from `Happy End', `Bilbao-Song', `Surabaya-Johnny', and `Das Lied von der harten Nuss' (Song of the Big Shot). I have heard these done by many people, but never so sweetly. These numbers are so lovingly performed that I insist that you ignore the fact that the lyrics are in German. The accompanying booklet gives English translations, which I simply ignore and enjoy the musical talent with no filter. My understanding German has nothing to do with this, as I do the same with French, which I can just barely make out.

Kurt Weill may not be the most important influence on American musical theatre in the 20th century, but he is easily in the top five, along with the Gershwins, Irving Berlin, Richard Rodgers and collaborators, and Cole Porter.

Ms. Von Otter is ably accompanied on this disk by her favorite pianist, Bengt Forsberg plus the Norddeutch Rundfunk orchestra directed by John Eliot Gardiner. While I really like her selection on this disk, the collection makes me wish Ms. Von Otter would do some more Weill and spend less time hanging out with Elvis Costello, but that's a different story.

3 out of 5 stars Everything is right but the style.......2005-09-24

Weill and Brecht defined a nasty age with nasty art, writing some of the grittiest satire in the history of music. In this CD von Otter misses that edge, skirts all the dangerous, sleazy implications, and ultimately sounds too much the opera singer slumming it for an hour. Her earnestness is no subtitute for the right period style, a la Lotte Lenya.

4 out of 5 stars Intelligent reading from both singer and conductor.......2005-01-27

THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS is such a brilliant mini-masterpiece (and, to me, the pinnacle of the Brecht-Weill years) that it is hard to screw up. It is a testament to the staying power of this work (and to the brilliance of Weill's music in general) that it can be performed by the likes of Lotte Lenya, Julia Migenes, Ute Lemper, Judy Kaye, Marianne Faithfull, Teresa Stratas, and -- as here -- Anne Sofie von Otter, and STILL work... and EACH of these women are totally successful in the piece on their own terms.

Here, Anne Sofie von Otter gives us an intelligent (and highly musical) rendering of the text, keeping the musical line very much intact. She sings with vibrato at times, and then will turn around and use straight-tones at moments where it is dramatically appropriate to do so. She balances the performance well, shifting gears between cool detachment (which she is often criticized for) and impassioned outbursts (which her critics often fail to notice).

John Eliot Gardiner surprised me with how easily this music seemed to come to him, especially as he seems to be a man more at home with "Period-Instrument-Mozart" than highly charged 20th century works. However, his reading of "The Rake's Progress" by Stravinsky was totally staggering. For example, his choice beginning the climactic moment of the score ("Envy") as slowly as he does caught me very much off guard at first, and I didn't really care for it at all. However, with each successive listen, I find myself "getting" this choice more and more.

Finally, the "filler." As to be expected, she is more successful with the European material than she is with the songs from Weill's Broadway years. But this is the case with about 99.9% of all opera singers who try to sing Weill's Broadway scores. You will never hear any singer give "Je ne t'aime pas" a more hauntingly beautiful, passionately intense performance than Anne Sofie von Otter. Truly, the ultimate interpretation of one of my favorite Weill songs. "Nannas Lied," "Der Abschiedsbrief," and the HAPPY END selections. However, "My Ship" and "One Life to Live" seem to fail at catching fire -- the former because it is marred by an attempt to sound like a "pop singer," the latter because von Otter sings English better than native speakers (she knows where the ACTUAL emphasis in the phrase "nothing: the thing is to have fun" goes, as opposed to where Ira Gershwin placed it). I also -- surprisingly enough -- don't care for her performance of "Schickelgruber" -- she just seems totally lost to me. (I really think that this song is foreign territory to 'legit' sopranos and mezzos -- I don't even care for the Stratas rendition.) Just when I thought I would have to suffer through another bad batch of "opera-crossover," Anne Sofie turned around and surprised me by giving highly successful performances of the numbers from ONE TOUCH OF VENUS (especially on "I'm Stranger Here Myself").

All in all, a worthy purchase: highly recommended to all fans of THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS and Kurt Weill enthusiasts.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant--The best of the 7 Deadly Sins recordings.......2002-10-12

Weill, and particularly anything Brecht-Weill, has suffered for too long with interpertations based on tired ham theatrics, burlesques of Lenya's style, to the point where we have come to expect it as the only way to sing this music. Lenya herself is said, late in life, to have commented that a better singer (specifically Stratas at that time) would be more appropriate for properly interpreting Weill's music.

Here, after countless CD releases of the Seven Deadly Sins, is the first recording sung in the key the composer originally intended! The result is relevatory, sublime and magnificent.

Ms. Von Otter interprets the rest of the songs with mixed results--all are lovely, several are excellent, though several others have been handled better by singers with more "theatrical" talents. Nevertheless, this recording stands alone, head and shoulders above the others.

2 out of 5 stars WHY WERE SOME OF THESE ITEMS RELEASED IN THE FIRST PLACE?.......2006-08-16

Plain and simply, Maria Callas was the operatic icon of the Twentieth Century. The vocal, musical, and dramatic coponents of her art totaled a "complete package" that no one, living or historical, could come within miles of. My gripe here is with EMI, who, while they recorded Callas extensively in the standard repertoire (I am not including the studio recitals here), they completely missed the boat by not recording the great diva in roles like Lady Macbeth, Anna Bolena, Imogene in "Pirata", Elena in "Vespri", Abigalle in "Nabucco", and a few others. They have tried in recent years to correct this error by issuing live performances (with barely adequate sound) of "Bolena", "Macbeth", and "Pirata", etc. But --- and this is very important --- in many instances, the pressings that EMI have acquired sound even worse than the pirate pressings on which these performances first appeared. Truly, we should be grateful that EMI were brave enough to studio-record Callas in "Norma", "Puritani","Sonnambula" and "Il Turco in Italia".
This recording is a case in point. To start with, I am convinced that the abbreviated "Butterfly" aria in the beginning is NOT Callas. True, the speaking voice bears an astonishing likeness to her, but the singing does not. Even at the age of twelve, there should have been at least a hint of the Callas sound, however undeveloped. Someone spliced in another voice, I am sure. Yes, I know that I could be wrong, but I doubt it. The Proch variations are spectacular and they prove what a coloratura technician Callas was, but the sound is so introlerably bad that I find it impossible to listen to. All of the other items here are represented elsewhere on EMI releases in much better sound - though Callas herself may not have been in as excellent vocal condition.
Yes -- we are grateful to EMI for making so much of Callas' work available. But let's look at it from the $$$$$ standpoint. EMI has made megabucks on Callas, and while her artistry is certainly worth it, I wonder how much of a favor EMI is doing Callas by releasing material which she herself would have rejected, especially given the inferior pressings that EMI has settled for. It's not a tribute to the supreme diva of the Twentieth century ----- it's a matter of the all mighty dollar!!!!

5 out of 5 stars This is a great CD! And Freni is only adequate in Puccini!.......2006-07-13

Sempion, for all his unintelligent reviews, would seem like the stupid one here. For all his taste for opera, he should first understand what a good singer and a great singer is, and obviously he seems to think that singers who didnt' dig into their roles as much as other great divas are greater than others. He is so full of mediocrity, stupidity, and diatribical tendencies that I would dismiss him as a fool. Ignore him, or laugh at this New Yorker's unintelligent and unhelpful responses. And he says I'm not intelligent. Ha!

As for this disc, well, it's amazing! It showcases the great voice of Callas playing around with different repertoire (and doing it well too!!!) at the greatest height of her interpretive powers. I recommend this disc to Callas fans and non-Callas fans alike.

5 out of 5 stars Live in Concert - Maria Callas.......2006-02-25

This is a fabulous 2 CD set of live concerts by Maria Callas from 1949 to 1959. It demonstrates her unique range from dramatic soprano arias to The Bell Song. A must-have for all Callas lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Out of this world.......2004-09-27

The album is brilliant. It has some very great pieces of Callas and is a must to have for anyone even remotely interested in Opera. Trust me, the music will take you somewhere out of this world.

5 out of 5 stars Callas awful at Puccini? How stupid can someone be?.......2004-04-08

I understand that Amazon is trying to "cultivate different opinions" but there is a difference between an Opinion and sheer STUPIDITY... Callas awful at Pucini? Callas is the undisputable Tosca and Madama Butterfly of the 20th century and the only dramatic Mimi and Manon with the rest of the singers being from utterly inadequate (Tebaldi) to completely boring (Kanawa, Freni)...
I never expected to read so stupid and unbelievable remarks about Callas and it really faschinates me the fact that they appear to have been written by a greek person. No wonder Callas left Greece if there was such stupidity and ignorance she had to face...

In Germany only sometimes available as Cassette on Julian's concerts, this full radio show recording from WDR Cologne from 1991 includes all his classic songs. Great concert that captured the live atmosphere of Julian's performances perfectly.
