In the wake of 2005's Modern Day Drifter, Dierks Bentley has maintained fierce career momentum, earning awards, packing concerts, and joining the Grand Ole Opry in the space of just over a year. As before, he continues to flawlessly integrate straight-ahead, unforced vocals into a riproaring sound, underpinned this time by the solid, appealing mainstream acoustic bluegrass of touring partners the Grascals. The opening track, "Every Mile a Memory," defines the album's direction, buttressed by the witty "That Don't Make It Easy Loving Me." He projects clarity and desperation on "Trying to Stop Your Leaving," enhanced by an understated, yet appropriately tense arrangement. "Band of Brothers" celebrates the quintessential travails of musicians playing the low end of the honky-tonk circuit, while his all-inclusive, courageous views on "The Heaven I'm Headed To" may not please hardcore red-staters. The perpetual debate pitting country modernists against traditionalists often reaches the same levels of intensity as in current politics. Long Trip Alone demonstrates the smartest solution: quality modern country of the moment that simultaneously honors its past. --Rich Kienzle

Love it! .......2007-06-09
This was actually the first Dierks Bentley cd I ever bought. I'm a new country fan and after hearing Long Trip Alone on the radio for the first time I knew I HAD to have it. Dierks is my favorite artist and I love Long Trip Alone.
The cd is awesome! Every song is really great! The only one I really don't care for very much is That Don't Make It Easy Loving Me, track #4. But other then it is great. Long Trip Alone is my favorite song on the track obviously. I also like Soon As You Can and Prodical (Sp?) Son's Prayer. The whole cd is great and I'd defintely recemmend it to anyone!
Dierks Does It Again.......2007-06-04
I bought this album December of 2006. I can play it over and over again with out getting tired of it. Its country that sounds like country. The following are my favorites:
Every Mile A Memory
Long Trip Alone
Hope For Me Yet
The Heaven I'm Headed To
Free And Easy Down The Road I Go
Band Of Brothers
Prodigal Son's Prayer
It may not be his best - but it's DIERKS!!.......2007-05-28
I'll admit there are other songs of his I like better, but it's DIERKS!! HOW can it be bad?? Instead of just going by a CD or 2, you know it's not the same as hearing him live. The truth of his voice, like some others, far outshines some of these "polished" established acts. For "the new country" folks coming up, IE: Dierks, Gretchen, Jason or Keith (Anderson) - THESE folks rip live!!! Dierks has a live DVD from here in San Francisco I KNOW is gonna be good. My friend (the KENNY fan) & I felt Gretchen "showed" better than Kenny @ his concert. As I say on my BLUES show, "If you don't support it LIVE, you won't hear it on the air!!" Any chance of seeing someone live keeps the opportunity to record going!! What happened to Pinmonkey & WHY don't we hear Shooter or HANK III anywhere??? Playin' & Lovin' it ALL!! Donnie
Great Country Music.......2007-03-21
I am glad I ordered this CD. It is one of the best music cd's I have purchased in the last few months to be from an up and coming new artist.
Great music and I highly recommend it.
Soulful. Easily, great country music........2007-02-20
Dierks Bentley's "Long Trip Alone" is a wonderful listen.
The songs take me back to roadtrips and good times.
I love the effortless mix of modern country and old time bluegrass.
Bentley's voice is rustic, but enjoyable.
Worth every penny.

A decade ago, country acts who sounded more like arena rockers gained hegemony on a Music Row that scorned the success of the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack as a fluke. As in the past, many there couldn't see the forest for the trees. Both Bentley's own rootsy self-titled debut and Gretchen Wilson's Here for the Party prove quality modern traditionalism still sells. Bentley's sophomore album offers more straight-ahead amalgams of bluegrass, '60s Bakersfield, and raw barroom fare like the Waylonesque "Got a Lot of Leavin' Left to Do" and the beer-guzzling anthem "Domestic, Light, and Cold." He shows real depth on the sensual "Come a Little Closer." The moving, timeless "Gonna Get There Someday," a tale of a son at his mother's grave vowing to make something of himself, easily trumps the album's cliché-ridden title song, as does his fetching treatment of friend Del McCoury's "Good Man Like Me," recorded with McCoury's band. Bentley's lack of artifice proves his greatest strength. Again. --Rich Kienzle
Customer Reviews:
Love it!.......2007-06-09
I did the oppsite of most people, I bought Long Trip Alone first. I had that cd for probably two weeks before I went out and bought this cd. I love it! All the songs are so good. Settle For A Slowdown (Track 4) is undoubtly my favorite. I also love So So Long and Gonna Get There Someday. And how can you forget the title track, Modern Day Drifter? I don't think there is a song that fits Dierks better. (And surprisely he didn't write it.) Dierks is great. And I defintely recommend this cd!
A young George Strait.......2007-05-28
Dierks has an amazing voice- something in his voice has the twinge of a young George Strait too. Dierks comes out strong with a strong 2nd CD.
Come a little closer is a great track, Modern day drifter, accompanied by other great tracks. The fiddle, guitar is electrifying in a lot of the tracks, as well as his deep mellow voice. Whether is'a more upbeat song or not- the infusion of George Strait, somber sexiness, and innocent self-confidence of his tunes makes them catching, and singable.
It's a CD I have had on heavy rotation.
Dierk rules.......2007-03-21
This is a great country album. It has everything,Classic country song sounds, todays sound, love songs.....it's got it all!
At last!!!.......2007-01-15
Country music is in a sad state. You either have to sing pop songs with a southern accent (Carrie Underwood, Rascall Flatts) or with southern instruments (Keith Urban) or have some sappy Hallmark ballad(everyone else). While all this is going on some of the best country music is being made without a splash on country radio or CMT (Hank III, Wayne The Train). But thankfully Dierks Bentley is getting played. Finally someone is making true country music about true country things. He's about the only person in the mainstream who don't make me dry heave. If you don't think this is as country as it gets, go listen to some Cowboy Troy and reevaluate your life.
A new singer added to my favorites list.......2006-07-06
I bought this album blindly. What I mean is I bought it because I'd heard one or two songs on the radio from it that I liked. I do that sometimes-if an artist has two or three songs I like, I usually buy that album because I know the rest of the songs will most likely be just as good. This album is the same. I'd heard "A Lot Of Leavin' Left To Do" and "Come A Little Closer" on the radio and liked them. Then came "Settle For A Slowdown," which became an instant hit for me. I had to try this album, and I'm glad I did. It's a very good album with an equal amount of upbeat songs to ballads. Not to mention the very funny monologues in a few of the songs. Also, another gem on the album that was not released as a single (yet) is the title track, "Modern Day Drifter." It could very possibly be the best song on the album. Buy it, you'll love it.

Dierks Bentley's debut album is a textbook case of the good things that can happen to a talented singer/songwriter who comes to Nashville and holds fast to his dream. Arriving from Phoenix at age 19, Bentley played the downtown clubs and allied himself with bluegrass musicians and commercial songwriters who loved country's tradition, but modernized the form with rhythmic energy and contemporary lyrics. The result is an impressive debut that melds the attitude of honky tonk with the instrumentation of bluegrass (the Del McCoury band and Bryan Sutton guest), and establishes Bentley as a New Artist to Watch. Already the irresistible "What Was I Thinkin'," a breakneck story song with a plot line straight out of The Dukes of Hazzard, has topped the charts as the first debut single to reach number one in two years. But Bentley's appeal runs far beyond a catchy novelty song, and his choice of originals and covers (Buddy and Julie Miller's "My Love Will Follow You") add up to one of the year's most memorable albums--just one more factor in country's burgeoning swing back to tradition. --Alanna Nash

It's ok.......2006-04-08
this is more country/pop. like faith hill is now or keith urban. If you want country country I suggest Gary Allan or Brad Paisley
Great Beginning........2006-02-24
It is obvious that this unique and gifted country singer will have a huge impact on c/w music. His strengths are in his ballads, for sure. The longing in his voice and a sexy and charasmatic persona. What more could you ask for?

New tradition does it again.......2005-12-10
When I first heard Dierks Bentley's "What was I thinking", I thought great song, but like the other artists with a real catchy first tune, he will fade after another one or two songs that will fail to catch on.
I was very surprised hearing the CD for the first time however, He stays true to the traditional feel of the New traditionalist but inserts a little bluegrass and his other love (Texas music). All this from someone who's not from an area known for country music artists ... Arizona?!?!
This is not a album that you will get tired of completely like some of the other Nashville "hick pop" as some have called it (after a few weeks rest, It's like rediscovering it again).
Some of the real shames about the cd is some songs that were released to radio don't get airplay anymore where people can rediscover this talented artist.
I will admit one of my guilty pleasures is the last song, the bluegrass song "Train traveling" which makes me think if he couldn't have made it as a country artist, He would have been a great bluegrass artist in the newgrass vein of Alison Krauss.
Let's just hope his influences keep him straight and fresh like his self titled cd.
Enjoyable album.......2005-10-05
I'll be the first to say that I am biassed towards any "new" country music; 99% of it lacks any soul and is completely disposable and plastic. I made the mistake of figuring Dierks Bentley was nothing more than the usual crap coming out of Nashville. Folks, this guy has got it; and if he keeps towards the true country sound, he will be around for decades. There are very few dim spots on this album, and there are some real flashes of brilliance here. There are three real stand-out tracks on this album: "I Can Only Think of One", "Wish it Would Break" and "I Bought the Shoes". In fact, "I Bought the Shoes" harkens back to the sounds of Faron Young and the golden age of country music. I give the album 4 stars; it's a debut album.
fabulous.......2005-06-03
This is my favorite cd that I own. I listen to it all the time. if you get in my car, this is what you hear. His voice is so wonderful that I can't get enough. It doesn't hurt that he's absolutely gorgeous. it is definitely worth the money.

I ain't big on these kinda tunes, but..........2004-01-07
....I really love this one about the good natured good ol' boy who lets his heart gets him into one thing after another, just because of some dixie chick and her dad's shot gun. It's a free wheeling tune, not hard on the ears and funny as heck.
Classic Country with a modern twist.......2003-09-24
This guy totally rocks. Very refreshing. From his unpretentuous style to his classic voice. There are at least two other hit songs on this CD. His voice is right up there with George Strait and Keith Whitley, in my book that's as good as it gets. Dierks has a classic country crooner voice and can really turn it up for the fast songs. I rarely buy CDs (wife and kids usually take care of that) but I went right out on bought this one. Dierks, keep your hair unkept and whatever you do, don't wear a hat, you don't need it. You are country to the core.
Country Cutie.......2003-07-12
I love this song! He's got a really cute accent and a really great voice. And Isn't he super cute?!!

He just keeps getting better and better!.......2006-12-24
Personally, every time i buy a new Dierks album, i find it better than the previous one! ok, there aren't that many albums out yet, but still! This album's got some killer tracks! it sound very country it really makes you wanna dance!
An impressive, solid effort from Dierks!!!!.......2006-10-19
Man, I was impressed with this album all the way through. I am sure it has its flaws, but they are few and far between. I like how this kid is doing too, respectful to the past and progressive enough for the alternative crowd. "Every Mile A Memory" is a great single and "Long Trip Alone" is a very good song. Buy this album, Dierks got his stuff together and he should only get better as time goes by. Thanks Dierks!
More of the same...this is bad, sorry Dierks..........2006-10-18
Dierks is OK, decent even, but he's not progressing enough...it's more of the same. This is fine with many artists, but Dierks is not ALTERNATIVE enough, if at all. He's tried to play both sides of the fence on his last 2 records...mainstream and alt-country, and it's getting old. Be one or the other, and it seems he's leaning more on the mainstream side on this new album, which I don't like. I HATE mainstream country, there's no edge, no real ROCK & ROLL in it, and it's tailormade for radio, and I can't stand mainstream country radio. On this record, it seems the label is trying to mold Dierks into being all mainstream. No way man, he blew it this time. He doesn't have enough of an inner hunger or independent streak. If anything, one new country record out this week that blows this one away is Vince Gill's new 4CD extravaganza of 43 NEW SONGS!!! Each disc focuses on a distinct style: catchy rock, southern soul/blues, traditional country, and acoustic/bluegrass. Vince wrote or co-wrote all the songs, plays lead guitar on all of them, co-produced it all, and he doesn't give a damn about having a hit single, ie it's not COMMERCIAL, and he's true to his art and his strengths, which is more important and makes Vince kind of alternative...Dierks should follow this path and defy what his label wants...independent alternative artistry is more important than hit singles, which are actually detrimental to any career, as they put artists into a box. Dierks CAN break the mold and escape this mentality, while there's still time...we'll see...nice packaging on the limited edition though...
Dierks You Did It Again DUDE! .......2006-10-18
The new Dierks Bentley CD is one of the best new cds I have bought in a long time!! I have bought a lot of new cds lately. Songs about love, relationships, Heaven, living life to its fullest. Upbeat songs, good ballads as well as good vocals and just plain good Country Music! Easy to enjoy...no hard to get into tracks. I honestly think its his best cd yet and I LOVED his last two.I bought the limited edition with the DVD. I wish the DVD included all of his music videos but it does include his two latest music videos...and some other neat things. He has a complete music DVD due out in 2007 so I guess well get more DVD music then.If you love Dierks buy this cd either the limited edition with the bonus DVD or the regular CD version. If you dont like it I want to know why.

Album Description
His appreciation for bluegrass is well documented. And so bluegrass has decided to tip its hat to Dierks. With a group of talented bluegrass pickers, the vital catalog of Dierks gets a loving spin around the farm. Blistering banjo, fiery fiddle, and maniacal mandolin whip up a frenzied acoustic storm on such hits as "Settle for a Slow Down" and "Domestic, Light, and Cold." These rousing instrumentals are the perfect bridge between Dierks's captivating music and the genre that spurred his success.
