CD REVIEW FROM DJ
As expected, the package you sent arrived and I have already listened to your CD several times. Every month I receive like thirty or forty CDs by singers who shouldn't even be allowed to sing in the shower and it makes me wonder why on Earth their producers wasted their money on them. On the other hand, there are those great artists, with great CDs, top notch production and a terribly appealing song selection who should be huge stars and are not... yet. Fortunately your case fits the second category!

Yours is a beautiful CD which should be the envy of many "famous" artists recording for a big label. But in their cases, many times there are three or four songs worth listening to and then the rest are just fillers, written by their producer and included in the CD just to satisfy their ego/pocket. In your case it is evident that you have chosen material that you like and it shows in your voice and interpretation. Your voice is clear and warm, you have a perfect command of it and you can vary feelings and emotions from tender ballads to more rocking tunes. The songs range from the pleasant to the great and there many which should become hits.

If you like Lari White's songs (as this is clear in your CD) she should be more than proud since you have improved her own tunes. Your version of "If I'm Not Already Crazy" has beautiful steel guitar work at the beginning (which was practically non-existent in the original) which establishes the sadness of the song right from the start; there's nothing sadder than the crying of a steel guitar and in this case it fits perfectly well with the lyrics and your heartfelt performance. "Go On" also shows more energy than Lari's version. Nice version of "Dancing Round and Round", a song recorded by Olivia Newton-John way back in the 70s when she was country. "Sidetracked" is by far my favorite and I will be playing it in high rotation. Other songs I will play throughout the year are tracks 1, 2, 3, 4 and 7.

You have come up with a great CD, with strong arrangements and clean production, effortless, beautiful performances, stunning looks and good choice of material. What else could anyone as for? You definitely have a winner here and deserve to gain a following with it.

2 out of 5 stars Well produced, but kinda scary.......2006-03-31

The good news is that this is NOT a canned record label product. We have enough of that from Disney and that Kidz Bop crap. The bad news is that this album presents the exact opposite problem. It's just plain old weird. My daughter was physically scared by this album. Gabby is obviously talented, but her voice is somewhat eerie. Les Claypool's arrangements are excellent and the music is really well produced, but I wouldn't classify this as a kids album. Perhaps world? Scary world? Is that a genre? Anyway, my suggestion for Gabby is that she should embark on a dance album AKA Bjork since this is obviously the school she comes from. If you combine the world elements with her weird voice and add some dance beats, I am sure her fan base would expand.

Here's my advice to all "kids" artists...Kids like to listen to great, groovy music. Kids, like other human beings, want to have fun. This album is anything but that, more a muse-o foray into oblivion.

4 out of 5 stars A little strange and ecclectic but otherwise excellent..........2006-03-13

I bought this album because I am a huge Primus/Claypool fan and after listening to the samples my kids loved it. Gabby La La's vocals sound sort of like Glinda the Good Witch fromthe Wizard of Oz. But if you can get by this or even like music that is a little off, then you need to check this out. All the instruments are played by La La and Claypool, and this really turned out to be quite a spectacle. If you like your music a little experimental, then I highly recommend this disk.

4 out of 5 stars Not just a lucky charm.......2006-02-19

It's actually a bit deceptive to call Gabby La La a pop singer. It usually makes you think of Britney, Ashlee or Hilary.

But Gabby is about as different from those as a golden glea is from a fortune cookie. With her quirky songwriting (chasing down leprechauns? Eating mermaid?), catchy songs, and the most unusual singing voice I've heard in a very long time.

It starts off with a pair of almost painfully catchy songs: "Be Careful What You Wish For" and "Backpack" ("Gotta keep track of me backpack!") with their tales of genies, mermaids and Roman tourism. It's almost impossible not to hear these simple, bouncy little infectious tunes without bouncing in your seat.

Then she twists her own catchy songs around. Rather than staying on the same track, she switches to some songs flavoured with Indian sitar, sparkling accordion pop, bouncy French-folk-flavoured music, and swirling indie balladry. There's even a grittier, darker song about "Pirates," with plenty of stark guitar to keep it grounded. By far, it's the most "ordinary" song on the album.

And Gabby La La also keeps the songwriting... well, not ordinary. I wouldn't go so far as to call it weird, since I've heard much weirder. But it's quirky, and the focuses are usually pretty far from "I love my boyfriend" or "he left me and I'm miserable." Golden fleas that chew fool's gold, genies, aged leprechauns, Hansel and Gretel, Santa's elves, and the "boogie woogie man in a black dress." There's even a song devoted to fortune cookies.

Yes, it sounds terribly twee. And here and there, it is. But Gabby La La gives it a slightly sick twist in places ("I found a mermaid swimming next to me/Then she offered me a single wish/I said I'd like to have you in my dish!"), and sometimes she gets even quirkier ("Boogie woogie man in a black dress/state your name and state your business!").

The topper to all this weirdness is Gabby La La's own voice -- she sounds like a fairy on speed, especially in the faster songs. It may sound weird at first, but it grows on you. She provides about half the instrumentation here -- usually sitar, ukelele and accordion -- while Les Claypool provides the more conventional pop instrumentation like drums and bass.

If you like the idea of a song that says, "Little fortune cookie, I'd like to smash you!", then Gabby La La's quirky, wacky debut is for you. Delightful.

5 out of 5 stars Be careful what you wish for and BLAST OFF.......2005-11-14

Countdown and
music, projected by the
ancestors, activated from the same recycled
Tao that floated the
golf ball of nevermind.

Unwrapped and unwound,
ukuleled and sitared,
Tachy-Vivace-Feather-Tickle-Falsetto-Fugues
projected as a single helix of vitality, I
escape set and setting, escape insatiable
creation, yet anchored
by downy injections
of ponytailed polytonalities,

drunken goose flesh flits off Saturn's ornaments
between bowing Buddha's smoked
ghoudas, until
no landing no collision, but silken,
rapelling Rapunzel's pubes
like a pool in a tub, like a tool in a pub,
like the blissful
blind bluster of young
passion's meandering musk. If, if,

if

If this music is real, if I can maintain, then I have been betrayed by everything I've ever called love.

4 out of 5 stars a fun trip outside of 'the box'.......2005-07-31

Gabby La La is one of those rare musicians who is so far outside of any musical box that the listener will either love or hate her. Gabby is eclectic, eccentric, exotic, whimsical, animated, and original. She plays a dizzying array of instruments including the sitar, toy piano, accordion, ukulele and electric butterfly guitar. This Petaluman's sitar work is surprisingly proficient and shines on 'Golden Flea' and 'In and Out of Dreaming,' a moody pop raga. La La's child friendly themes include backpacks, elves, pirates, chickens and the boogie man. The strongest tracks include 'Backpack,' 'Butter and Eggs,' and 'Pirates.' While La La's freshman debut lacks the call & response and jokes that bring so much charm to her live solo performance, it is compensated with Claypool's production that flushes out the rich potential of this material. It is not surprising that Gabby is the only other artist on Les Claypool's label, since when it comes to music, she may be his female counterpart. While it may take time to aquire an appreciation for Gabby La La, "Be Careful What You Wish For" is well worth the effort for such a fun trip.

5 out of 5 stars This is quality road trip music.......2005-04-05

I once spent 13 hours in a car on a spontaneous road trip with a roommate and this one CD. For us, "Following My Compass" was a standout, but every song uses Kristen's raspy voice to its fullest potential. That road trip was nearly 10 years ago, but this CD is still in my car. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite CDs, ever!.......2003-01-13

I heard Kristen Hall open for the Indigo Girls many (7, perhaps) years ago and I immediately went out and got this album on tape. A few years later my car radio was stolen and I was most upset that this tape was still in it. Now I have the CD and still listen to it regularly - in fact it's in my CD player as I type this. I love all the songs but "Following My Compass" and "Seeds of a Lifetime" are my favorites. I love Kristen's voice - it seems to wrap itself around the lines of each song. The music sways as you listen to it - very clean - Produced by Jerry Marotta who has certainly helped to make enough good music in his career to know what it sounds like!

5 out of 5 stars Terrific CD.......2002-12-01

Every song on this CD is great. I like the folk sort of feel to it. I look forward to hearing more of Kristen's music.

3 out of 5 stars Get "Fact of Fiction" instead.......2001-01-23

This album is nothing great. "Fact or Fiction" (her first album) is much, much better. This album has a fake sort of feel too it, like it was rushed and over-produced. It has no real soul or feeling to it (except a few rare moments like when Emily Sailers of the Indigo Girls comes in on "Following My Compass"). It actually gets downright cheesy at times. They are a couple good songs, but this is not the album if you're new to Kristen Hall. I bought this album without listening to it assuming that she'd be as good as she was on her first album. Man was I let down. Her raspy voice and acoustic guitar are much better on "Fact or Fiction" where everything sounds more natural, creative, and unique.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant artist never dissapoints.......1999-11-09

Kristen has again come up with a spectacular cd, and another is on the way. For full details on her schedule of events, and ways to get her other *not out of print* (at all..) cd's and tapes, go to her web site.. home.intranet.org/kristen_hall/

3 out of 5 stars Not their best, but not a bad starting point.......2000-12-06

It's hard not to look at Gary Mundy's joining Skullflower as a downward turning point for the once-godlike Ramleh, but as the artwork and themes of this album demonstrate, Mundy and his cohorts (including ex-Consumer Electronics and whitehouse nasty Philip best) never lost their edge, they just moved from the field of powerelectronics into the land of arena-rock fuzzed-out guitar distortion.

This is one of the first, if not THE first, Ramleh album that was widely available in America, and it still shouldn't be too hard to find. If you know work from the same era by Skullflower, Ax, or any of the other bands from that extended family, you've probably got a good idea of what to expect, musically (and if you're unfamiliar with Skullflower and its extended family, for god's sake, what are you waiting for? Go spend money NOW!). If not, imagine what would have happened had Peter Frampton gone over the edge into paranoid misanthropy and discovered what can happen when you play your guitar through seven or eight differently-set daisy chained distortion pedals. It's arena rock's live sound in a studio recording. Fantastic!

Fans of the more moderate and cerebral Skullflower et al., however, might find Mundy and Co.'s themes a bit on the disturbing side. Ramleh started like as a powerelectronics band, and they're not about to let you forget it. The same themes from PE music-- kidnapping, murder, rape, torture, and the glorification of those who practice such arts-- are much in evidence here, though the music they're set to isn't the earsplitting cacophony one expects from PE bands. Mundy spends a good bit of time wondering about the Torso killings that made headlines in the WW2 era, tosses in an amusing little number called "Blues for Herb Mullin" that must be heard to be appreciated, and lord knows what else is on here. You went to concerts in the seventies, right? Assuming you remember them, remember how distorted the vocals were? If you didn't know what you were singing along to, you had no idea what it was. Same here.

Lovely stuff for those not weak of stomach. But if you remember the glory days of Ramleh and are hoping for stuff that sounds like their releases on the legendary Broken Flag Records label, you're out of luck.
