Alabama epitomizes the term people's band. Never a critics' favorite, the quartet from Fort Payne, Alabama, presents slick, sentimental songs that unerringly catch the ear of fans yet mystify those who don't hear the appeal. This two-CD career retrospective, which presents all 41 of the group's No. 1 hits, underlines just how successful they've been. The strengths are there: Randy Owen's clear, deep, intimate vocals; the focus on accessible melodies and musical hooks; and the straightforward song sense that plainly celebrates love, family, and home with all the simplicity of homilies stitched into a framed kitchen doily. Some might argue about Alabama's artistic value, but the band's 18-year track record offers a convincing retort. --Michael McCall

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Disc #1 better than Disc #2, but this is still a great Alabama retrospective.......2007-05-02

For The Record(called Essential Alabama in its most recent incarnation) is a collection of Alabama's #1 hits. The members of Alabama(lead singer/guitarist Randy Owen, lead guitarist Jeff Cook, bass player Teddy Gentry, and drummer Mark Herndon) paid their dues for years before finally hitting it big in 1980. Indeed, Alabama made history, being the first country band to make a big splash on the music charts. I was a fan of Alabama back in the early '80s, and although this collection includes only the band's #1 songs, it still is a great record.

Disc #1 is the stronger of this record's two discs. "Tennessee River", with its awesome fiddle work, was Alabama's first #1 song back in 1980. "Mountain Music"(Alabama's signature song), "Dixieland Delight", "Take Me Down", "The Closer You Get", "Roll On", "If You're Gonna Play In Texas", "Fire In The Night", "You Can't Keep A Good Man Down" and "She And I" are also great uptempo numbers. The classic ballads "Why Lady Why", "Old Flame", "Feels So Right", "Close Enough To Perfect", "Lady Down On Love", "When We Make Love", and "There's No Way" are among Alabama's best. Alabama's newer songs, the workaholic anthems "Five O'Clock 500" and "Keepin' Up" and the romantic ballad "How Do You Fall In Love", are also very good songs.

However, I don't like Disc #2 as well as Disc #1. Alabama starts off the disc well, but I think some of the band's later upbeat numbers are kind of goofy. The Southern anthems "Song Of The South" and "Southern Star", along with the traditional-sounding "High Cotton", "Jukebox In My Mind", "Down Home", and "Born Country", rank up there with Alabama's early '80s songs. However, this record's second disc also includes "I'm In A Hurry", "Hometown Honeymoon", and "She Ain't Your Ordinary Girl", which to me border on the slap-happy. To Alabama's credit, "Reckless", "Sad Lookin' Moon", and "Give Me One More Shot" are solid uptempo numbers. They're well-done and well-written. As on the first disc, Alabama also has some excellent ballads: "You've Got The Touch", "Face To Face", "If I Had You", "Forever's As Far As I Go", "Then Again", "Once Upon A Lifetime", and "In Pictures". The latter song, where the man is looking at pictures of his daughter that his ex-wife sends him, is a haunting portrait of how time gets away from us.

The guys in Alabama were country music hitmakers throughout the '80s and '90s. Although Alabama's later music wasn't as good as their early hits, they have built a solid musical legacy. For The Record is a solid collection of chart-toppers from this legendary group.

1 out of 5 stars Great!!!.......2007-04-11

Is Great seeing Alabama going the Christian Music way it so neat seeing Country Artist going the way to Christian Music! I do like this Album

5 out of 5 stars Great addition to your country music collection.......2006-02-06

This CD is a great addition to anyone's country music collection.
Not only does this Cd contain 41 number one songs for the group at the time it was released but some of the new songs that were put on the album eventually also were big hits.
Whether you are a big Alabama fan or just love country music you will love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars gotta have a fiddle in the band.......2005-05-18

awesome bluegrass/country sound.. back when country stations played.. well, country

3 out of 5 stars A non-fan's appraisal.......2005-02-11

I like country, but I'll confess I've never really been an Alabama fan. My wife however was a big enough fan to get this collection, so I decided to give it a 2nd listen. A band that hit the top of the country charts 41 times between 1977 and 2002 must be doing something right, right?

Having given these 39 songs (2 of them of unreleased tracks so it's not really fair to critique them as harshly..the band themselves had thought they weren't up to snuff..) an honest second hearing, my opinion isn't shaken a whole lot.

There are some great spots amid the collection, notably "Tennessee River" which is probably as close as the band ever flirted with southern rock on the charts, "Mountain Music" (which ironically doesn't have very much in common with the bluegrass it celebrates, save a VERY short fiddle solo...I think the gentleman who says they edited the songs for this collection is correct.), and "If You're Gonna Play in Texas" (which tips its hats to traditional country. Again, the fiddle solo seems to have been shortchanged.) "Close Enough to Perfect" is a tender love song and "Lady Down on Love" focuses on love's end. "Closer you Get" and "Reckless" are uptempo Charmers. "In Pictures" is a look at divorce from the side of the non-custodial father. It's truly touching.

But there are 2 big problems with this much Alabama in one place:

1) It points out how little risk they took lyrically and musically. "Workmanlike" is a very apt description for their work. Over and over, you can hear how they worked a "formula" to get hits. Do one about faithful wives. Do one about being from the country and/or the South. Do one about hardworking folks.

2) You can see the downward spiral. Notice that "Reckless" and "In Pictures" are the only ones I gave high marks to on the 2nd disc. The others are 3 star material (solidly mediocre) and below.

It's not that Alabama is downright bad..it's only rarely that the material here really stinks. It's just bland..played back to back to back, it's sometimes hard to tell which is which. Sadly, Alabama's lasting contribution to country music is probably going to be as part of the "Urban Cowboy" phenomenon that blurred the lines between country and pop.

5 out of 5 stars Judds not duds.......2007-07-10

This is a great compilation of the Judds' hits. They were a great mother/daugther duos. Theire voices harmonize well but are sufficiently different so that there is nice variation in the mix of pitches. The music on here is definitely country. There's a good mix of uptempo, energetic stuff and soulful songs. Particularly good songs:

Why Not Me
Rocking with the Rhythm of the Rain
Turn it Loose - excellent, great attitude and spunk
Girls Night Out
Have Mercy
I Know Where I'm Going

4 out of 5 stars Judge the Judd's ..........2007-01-03

I have always liked the Judd's and own several of their CD's. In my opinion, this one ranks up there near the top of my Judd's list.

5 out of 5 stars Most of the essentials.......2003-10-06

The Judds, with their great acoustic songs, were the heroines of traditional country fans in the eighties, and this compilation contains most of the essentials. As the title suggests, all these songs were number one hits in the country charts.

Of the songs here, I particularly like Mama he's crazy (in which a girl asks her mother's advice about a boy), Girls night out (a good time song), Why not me and Grandpa tell me about the good old days - just a few of the Judds classics included here.

One of many great songs that are not included here is Love can build a bridge, which is probably the song they are best known for in Britain. Perhaps it didn't make number one or perhaps the Judds had more number one hits than the record company were willing to include.

While this collection is far from complete, the sheer quality of the music here is undeniable. As such, it is a great introduction to their music, but note that full length CD's have previously been available in both Britain (Judds collection) and America (Essential Judds) so if you can obtain either of those, you won't need this.

5 out of 5 stars a great CD.......2003-04-18

This is a great cd. Every song it is good and has that quality to it that makes you want to listen to it over and over again. Also it's a great CD to drive w/ as it's upbeat but mellow and has great instrumentals too. Not one song on this CD is bad. I really love Wynonna's voice in Have Mercy and Turn it Lose and the instrumentals in Turn it Lose are really good too. I would recommend this CD to anyone as it's a very good all-around CD and is one of the best #1 hits cds/tapes I've ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2002-08-15

Its very rarely that I find a CD where I like every song equally. This album is one of the chosen few. Naomi & Wynonna put their soul into every song. From the rocking heartbreak songs to the soulful ballads this CD will captivate your intrest and get ya off of your feet. I recomend this CD to anyone who likes true country music.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Dance hits of the thirties and forties.......2003-02-28

For those of us raised on the music of the second half of the twentieth century, the music contained on this CD does not sound like music to dance to - more like easy listening music to relax to - but Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians were one of the leading dance bands of their day.

They had 26 number one hits of their own on the American charts, of which 23 can be found here. They also had two other number ones as the backing group to solo singers Kate Smith and Bing Crosby. Kate and Guy's band hit number one with River stay `way from my door, also included here. Harbour lights, although included here, was (according to Billboard) only a number two hit for Guy.

Two of the three missing (You're driving me crazy and Boo hoo), together with the song that Bing and Guy's band took to number one (You're getting to be a habit with me), can be found on another ASV compilation, Sweetest music this side of heaven. Just one of Guy's number one hits is hard to find - The last round up, although other versions of that song are readily available.

Anybody familiar with Kate's music will enjoy her song, especially as (at the time of writing this review) this is the only CD on which it is available, although it has previously been released on compilations of Kate's music.

The remaining tracks mainly feature Carmen Lombardo on vocals. He was the singer up to 1941. Although the band had many more hits after that, with several different singers, nearly all the number ones occurred during Carmen's years.

Even if you are new to Guy's music, fans of the Great American Songbook will recognise some of the songs, including Stars fell on Alabama (which I first came across via Doris Day's lovely cover), Red sails in the sunset (my favorite cover of this is by Frances Langford), September in the rain (Dinah Washington made this song her own) and Harbour lights, which Frances Langford had a top ten hit with in 1937 (it was not only her biggest hit, but possibly her finest recording), but the song became a lot more popular in 1950 when Guy's version was one of several top ten hits. It received a further boost when the Platters covered it later in the fifties - that is the version most people are now familiar with.

People may not dance to this kind of music these days, but Guy and his orchestra made some very high quality music. This collection contains 25 of their finest recordings. If you only buy one CD of Guy's music, this is the one to go for.

This is another mis-leading compilation of re-recorded hits, listed as "new stereo recordings" to get you to believe that the songs are stereo versions of the original recordings-which they aren't.

Personally, I've returned more than one CD because of this and urge anyone who buys compilations like this to read the label BEFORE unwrapping the CD and look for the words "new stereo recordings". If you see this phrase, they are NOT the original recordings! Just send it back.

Combining all of Presley's No. 1 hits from the Billboard charts (18 in total from 1956-59), this disc offers a decent, if skimpy, introduction to the King. Presley neophytes will certainly find it useful to have such standards as "Heartbreak Hotel," "Love Me Tender" and "Suspicious Minds" on one album. In addition to these huge Presley hits, such lesser known Number Ones as "Big Hunk o' Love" and "Good Luck Charm" are pleasing reminders of the breadth of Presley's abilities. Still, the fact is that there's a lot more fantastic Presley material out there, and any fan would be wise to seek out as much of it as he or she can. --Ian Landau

This CD includes all 18 of Elvis Presley's #1 hits as featured on the Billboard Hot 100. Great stuff, of course, but a better choice is The Top Ten Hits, which features 38 great hits. It should be noted that "Suspicious Minds" as featured here is an alternate mix, without the horns or the extended fade out/fade in of the hit version. This was probably included by accident.

This is an album telling when the King's number one hits were recorded and when they became number one, there is no inserts however. It is amazing at how fast they soared to the top of the charts. However, not all of the King's songs were number 1, so you may need another album to satisfy your fill of the King. This is an excellent album to have if you're an Elvis fan.

5 out of 5 stars Only the Hits!.......2002-02-23

My father once told me that if a song goes to #1, it probably sucks. After all, it the public is picking it. I believe that to be true in most cases except this one. Elvis was a talent bar none.Alot of his other work was better than his #1 hits and alot wasn't. To make a correction to the amazon review, the 18 hits were from 1956 - 1969, not 59.

4 out of 5 stars "The King" is king for a reason!.......2002-02-16

This is the slimmed-down version of "Top Ten Hits," which means you're getting the "best of the best." Being "the King," and having a recording career covering two decades, there is a lot of good Elvis to choose from.

We gauge the Beatles by their albums, but we gauge the King by his songs, since their careers and styles were different. None of the Beatles did time in the Army, or focused on a movie career like Elvis. Elvis was not a recording artist, or a composer/songwriter, but an entertainer. In fact, I'll go so far as to say that Elvis put the "E" in entertainment.

This CD has the hits listed chronologically, so you are hearing the evolving Elvis, as he gets his feel for the studio, and adds that to his natural talents and irreplaceable voice. The only down-side it that you aren't getting some of his popular songs that were not #1 hits, such as "Kentucky Rain," or "In the Ghetto (the Vicious Circle)," which are better than some of the songs on this CD. If you want a deeper run into Graceland, then get the "Top Ten Hits," which should have anything you could ever want in a Elvis survey CD.

The copies are flawless, and have a clean re-mastering process, so they tracks almost sound fresh. The linear notes are also helpful. It is a nice picture of the thin Elvis, which looks like a potage stamp, even though I prefer the later Elvis that I remember seeing on TV as a lad.

5 out of 5 stars This should be called "Elvis 1.".......2001-12-08

This is the "1" for Elvis. If you want "the best of" or an "essentials" for the King, this is the CD for you.

This is pure feel-good music with soem country philosophy. Ther is no cause to fight for, no moaning and groaning about world conditions here, just fin and relaxation.

    5 out of 5 stars This is really a good NOH's CD!!.......2006-07-14

I've been searching for a good 60's CD for a long time where I love every single song. I came across quet a lot but I didnt' know or like more than half of the songs on the album. That is the case unfortunatley with a lot of Greatist Hits or Number One Hits...but not with this one! This album belongs to that few where you gonna love every song! I think the sound quality is very good too. Inside the CD case there's a little booklet where every artist who sings on the CD has a mini biography. Then at the end you get a quick overview of what happend at that given year in the word (from 1960-64). This is a nice touch.

    1 out of 5 stars Rubbish remakes.......2004-06-14

My copy doesn't have any warning about original artists, but these are not all the original versions. I bought this for three tracks- "Kind Of A Drag", "Lightning Strikes" and "This Diamond Ring", all of which are re-recordings that lamely attempt to mimic the original, but the vocals are dead giveaways. I grew up in NY listening to these hits and I know the difference. Save your money for a legitimate set.

A previous review cautions to be beware of the very tiny tiny microscopic small print on this cd that says, may not include all the original artists!
I believe all the artist on this are the original artists.
If you went to high school during the 60's this will bring back memories.

4 out of 5 stars Weddings & some great slow dances.......2004-04-07

Many of the songs on this album are requested at weddings. All of these songs can be slow danced to and are crowd pleasers.
I have all of the Casey Kasem's collections and I have not been disappointed with any of them. I am a full-time DJ. I use this album frequently at dances and weddings. It's worth the money to put this in your collection if you want to get romantic or do some crooning. Enjoy!

    1 out of 5 stars Profoundly Terrible.......2000-12-21

If this is Casey Kasem's idea of love, he must be divorced! Just having Styx on it ruined it... but all of these god-awful ballads make me want to be celibate.

    1 out of 5 stars love stinks.......2000-12-16

this is possibly the most sickening compilation i've ever heard. while there are some good bands and singers on this cd, the songs are their weakest. if you love silly love songs like "i wan't to make it with you" then this cd is for you.
