The Daredevil soundtrack provided a nice boost for this previously unknown quartet from Little Rock, Arkansas. Evanescence's songs "My Immortal" and the imposing "Bring Me to Life" are clear standouts in the film, mainly because they work so well with the dramatic, eerie undertones of the storyline. They reappear here on the band's debut, alongside a selection of similarly brooding tracks that evoke pensive artists like Tori Amos and the Cranberries. Vocalist Amy Lee has the kind of voice that can cause weeks of insomnia, but on songs like "Tourniquet" and "Haunted" she belies the music's sinister mood with evenhanded spirituality, thoughtfully letting some light shine through the tempest. --Aidin Vaziri

        Amazon.com essential recording

Gram Parsons was one of the founders of country-rock and an artist whose influence can be heard in the music of such disparate performers as the Eagles, the Rolling Stones, Emmylou Harris, and Wilco. The two-disc, 46-song Sacred Hearts & Fallen Angels brings together tracks from every stage of his too-brief career, starting with his first group, the International Submarine Band, continuing through his period with the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers in the late 1960s, and ending with two solo albums from the early 1970s. Parsons was a talented songwriter, but an erratic singer, and some of his performances are on the ragged side. But when he pulls it together, as he does on the mournful ballad "$1000 Wedding" or his transcendent duets with Harris on "Love Hurts" and the old Louvin Brothers gospel tune "The Angels Rejoiced Last Night," he justifies his reputation as a great country singer. Sacred Hearts & Fallen Angels is an excellent introduction to the work of the man who introduced country to the rock & roll world. --Michael Simmons

        3 out of 5 stars Incomplete.......2005-10-04

For a guy who died so young, Gram made a lot of music and was an incalculable influence on future musicians. He moved fast, and that makes it hard to put together a compilation. This one is a good effort, but like most comps it skips my favorite song (in this case, Big Mouth Blues).
The great bulk of this 2-disc set is available on 4 discs: The 2fer edition of Gram Parsons Solo Records GP and Grievous Angel; Byrds' Sweetheart of the Rodeo, The International Submarine Band's album, and Flying Burrito Bros' Gilded Palace of Sin.
I personally think it makes more sense to just go out and buy those discs than another (quite fine) comp. That way, you get (almost) everything, the way it meant to be heard.

5 out of 5 stars An August Sunday morning.......2005-09-23

I could rattle on about how important Gram Parsons was and still is -- father of country rock, partner and nurturer of Emmylou Harris, grandfather of alt-country, etc., etc., etc. -- and how this is an important and far-reaching anthology and that everyone should have a copy. Instead, let me tell you about a gorgeous mid-August Sunday morning, 2005, driving into Yosemite Valley.
While my girlfriend drove the rental, I was in charge of the entertainment -- popping the CDs in and out. I decided on Gram, front-to-back, both discs -- from the boyish, sunny enthusiasm of the International Submarine Band to the sadly premature weariness of his last recordings. Maybe it was the gorgeous scenery as we snaked the hour or so toward the floor of the valley from the south gate. Or maybe it was the weather (perfect). Maybe it was a hyperactive rock'n'roller taking time to take it easy and give the songs a longer and better listen than before. Maybe it was just the notion of listening to Gram in California. But his music was the absolutely perfect soundtrack to an absolutely perfect Sunday morning. Simply beautiful music.
The only thing I can compare it to was the August Sunday morning my father drove us through North Carolina en route to Florida when I was 13, and the sun was just right, and every station on the radio was broadcasting some preacher or another. Except that listening to Gram in the cathedral of John Muir was a much more religious experience.
If you're not into history, at least listen to this collection if you love a sunny Sunday morning.

5 out of 5 stars One Hot Burrito To Go, Please........2005-06-09

If you appreciate the talents of Gram Parsons and share an affinity for what is now "old Style" country that is fused with "old style" rock, then this compilation is for you. I was a big fan of the Burritos in the seventies and had a deep appreciation for the later solo work of Parsons, but I had never had the opportunity to experience his work with The International Submarine Band. Well, I was blown away! The songs hold up today as a kind of pure country music that tells stories of good old Christian men and women who commit sins every day, but we still love and forgive them. Even when the songs are sung from the lips of the condemned, waiting on death row for the ultimate fate to befall them. There is such depth and texture in these discs that any fan will be totally satisfied with this boxed set. Buy it now!

        5 out of 5 stars A nearly perfect compilation.......2005-03-28

This is a wonderful 2xCD compilation - it looks great, sounds great and comes as close as humanly possible to being a perfect sampling of Gram's very consistent work. For those reasons alone, you should probably get it, particularly if you're neither a completist nor already familiar with any of Gram's material. On the other hand, you may choose to go the longer route - even so, there are plenty of reasons to get this 2xCD as well, mentioned below. For those who might want more, here's how to go about it:

        1) The International Submarine Band's "Safe At Home" reissue on Sundazed contains tracks 1-6 on CD 1, as well as 4 more tracks, in excellent sound and packaging.

        2) The Byrds' "Sweetheart Of The Rodeo" CD on Legacy features lots of Gram vocals and involvement, including tracks 7 & 8 on CD 1, but you miss the Gram vocal take on "The Christian Life" that's on this 2xCD. The versions of "You Don't Miss Your Water" and "One Hundred Years From Now" are different, too. Although these (tracks 9-11 on CD 1 here) were on the Byrds' boxed set, they were just about the only worthwhile things on it that weren't on any of the Byrds' single CD reissues as bonus tracks - so this double CD gets you those 3 tracks quite easily.

        3) The Flying Burrito Brothers "Hot Burritos!" 2xCD on A&M contains tracks 12-24 of CD 1 here, plus the first track of CD 2 . . . AND 29 more tracks, some of them excellent (though this 2xCD does a good job of capturing the best.)

        4) The Reprise single CD reissue of Gram's two solo albums "GP" and "Grievous Angel" contains tracks 2-9 on CD 2, as well as tracks 13-22 on CD 2. It also has five tracks not included here. And the song "Return Of The Grievous Angel" is in a different mix here.

        5) Gram Parsons & the Fallen Angels "Live 1973" CD on Rhino features tracks 10-12 on CD 2, plus nine tracks not here, in excellent sound.

        6) This CD also features three outtakes from Gram's solo albums (tracks 20-22 on CD 2). These were previously available only on the import-only "Sleepless Nights," a compilation of these three tunes plus some late-period Flying Burrito Brothers country covers - the best of which are also on "Hot Burritos!" So this Rhino set is an easy way to get these three tracks without any dross.

That's it, with the exception of the recently unearthed "Another Side Of This Life: The Lost Recordings Of Gram Parsons 1965-1966," a surprisingly fine Sundazed release of previously undiscovered demos. Gram's talent is in full flower (he even performs a version of his own "Brass Buttons" roughly 8 years before its appearance on "Grievous Angel.") Most of the 18 tracks are covers of great songs by Fred Neil, Tim Hardin and other soulful folky types. It's much better than you'd think.

        Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, vital anthology..........2005-03-17

Read below and you will see why British people know nothing about country music. Stick to the Beatles, okay jerky boy?

I wish I could explain what Gram Parsons did for me musically. He could very well be the reason why there is any good country music left at all. This anthology includes some of The Burrito Brothers stuff, Byrds, and plenty of old Fallen Angels tracks. This is one of those all-inclusive anthologies...I don't find myself wondering, "Why didn't they put such and such song on here?"

It is worth the money for this one if you're a fan of real country music.

        Album Description

Clearly, Avenged Sevenfold have thrown away the rulebook. With Waking the Fallen, their sophomore effort for Hopeless Records, Aveneged Sevenfold (or "A7X") shatter preconceptions of punk and metal. Guitar World (March 2003) said the band "completely blur the line between metal and punk." The magazine also noted that the band would "be as comfortable on the Ozzfest stage as it is playing punk rock dives" A7X marks the beginning of a bold new direction for punk rock and metal. "At first, we were nervous about working with a producer because we didn't want our song structures changed. We didn't want to be formatted into three-minute, verse-chorus-verse songs. We told Mudrock that we want to sound epic, with big harmonies, have clean-sounding vocals like Iron Maiden's, and then go into heavy stuff like Pantera. We wanted to use all those influences and still make it work."

        5 out of 5 stars Core's review.......2007-04-22

Ok this album is absolutely AWESOME!!!!! I absolutely love the combination of metal and... I dont wanna say PUNK, but its kinda close. I mean not to diss em, there REAL good... A7X is one of the best bands out there, and they get SOOOO little attention, its pathetic. People are too busy focusing there attention on jokes like gwen stefani, kelly clarkson, and all the other stupid radio pop crap out there. This band outshines ANYTHING out there today.

        1. Waking the Fallen - just an intro song, still good though.
        2. Unholy Confessions - Now this is one of my favs!!!! Its loud, fast, and heavy.... The chorus and verses combined are just awesome!!!
        3. Chapter Four - This is probly my fav song on the album. I LOVE this one... Its about something from the Bible, too. Alot of their songs are.
        4. Reminissions - Not my fav, but still real tight. The intro alone is enough to tell you its gonna be one awesome song.
        5. Desecrate Through Reverence - This might be the hardest screaming song on the album, probly next to "I Won't See You Tonight Pt. II". Another good one. ROCK ON.
        6. Eternal Rest - This song is a lil slower, but its got some of the fastest guitar work at the beginning.
        7. Second Heartbeat - Similar to Eternal Rest in some ways, this song is slower, but the guitar at the END this time, is incredibly fast and blazing. This is one of my favs too.
        8. Radiant Eclipse - This is my third fav on the album!!! I love the lyrics to this one, and Second Heartbeat. They really mean something.
        9. I Wont See You Tonight Pt. I - This song is incredible, theres no words for it. This my second fav. I make a real strong connection to the lyrics and message.
        10. I Wont See You Tonight Pt. II - Sort of a screaming version of Pt. I, this one is awesome too. Its the heaviest song on the album. Its like Part one and Part two really show the bands abilities with melodic singing in part one, and screaming in part two, and both combined almost sum up the entire album in a way.
        11. Clairvoyant Disease - This is a good song too, its a little bit softer, its not my fav but its good.
        12. And All Things Will End - This song is AWESOME... Not a lot of screaming, but its my fourth fav on the album. Also a great closing track. This song talks about the apocolypse, and how life will end, and really serves as a PERFECT prelude to the NEXT album, where the first song is "Beast and the Harlot", which talks about the apocolypse too. This is definitely one of the best on the album.

Overall, whether you like metal or not, BUY THIS ALBUM!!!! Its well worth it, and you wont be sorry. Unless of coarse you have no taste, but... that would be YOUR loss.

5 out of 5 stars SYN IS GOD. I made a review for City Of Evil. THIS IS BEST.......2007-04-01

OK. This is by far the best A7X cd they have out. The best cd!. Not one of their songs on this cd suck. All are great. Synyster Gates and Zacky Vengeance reach a whole new level in breaking out impressive guitar riffs. The Rev dominants the crowd with his unbelievable drumming wisdom, Johnny Christ steals the show with his bass, and Matt Shadows loosens it all up with his melodic singing voice. Heres my review:

        1. Waking The Fallen 10/10. Great intro. Actually the whole song is an intro. Its wonderful. Without this intro, the cd would have started in an awkward way.
        2. Unholy Confessions 11/10. Great great great. The first A7X song i ever heard. This made me want to buy the cd. Awesome opening riff followed by a great chorus. One of my favorite A7X songs.
        3. Chapter Four 12/10. BEST BEST BEST BEST. i don't know but i would say that this is the best song on the cd. Let that alone the whole 3 disc collection. Great song. Awesome chorus. ENDING IS THE BEST. Where has he gone wat have u done. U gotta listen to this. Beast solo.
        4. Remenissions 7.5/10. Did not like this song. To much changing with the rhythm.
        5. Desecrate Through Reverance 9/10. This was a good song. Luv the intro. The chorus wasn't that great, but the ending made up for it.
        6. Eternal Rest 9/10. The intro was impressive. I luv the mixing of screamo and M. Shadows normal voice. Great song.
        7. Second Heartbeat 10/10. Awesome. thats all i can say. Great Intro. Great Chorus. A very good song.
        8. Radiant Eclipse 8/10. The intro was too long and too boring. I didn't enjoy the verses. No rhytym in the screaming. Everything is made up for all that in the Chorus. The chorus steals the whole song. Wonderful.
        9. I Won't See You Tonight-Part 1 10/10. Sad song but great. Wonderful chorus and beautiful piano intro. Listen to when sad.
        10. I Won't See You Tonight-Part 2 8/10. Totally ruined the "I WOn't see you tonight" series. I didn't like this song that much. The best part was when they took the chorus from Part 1 and mixed it in.
        11. Clairvoyent Disease 9/10. Awesome chorus. Not the best verse.
        12. And All Things Will End 9/10 Great mixture of music. Great song.

So its a good cd. Check out my review for City Of Evil. Its under SYN Is gOD. This is a great cd. I advise first time listeners to listen to City Of evil.

        5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-03-19

Not every song on here is perfect, but you could listen to any one of these songs and admit that they have a lot of talent. The only downside is that there aren't as many solos on this album as there are on City of Evil, which is in my opinion, a very good album as well, however this album is more for you if you're into the more heavier stuff. Avenged Sevenfold's guitarists prove that you don't need a crazy guitar solo to show off guitar skills, you can easily pull it off with creative riffs that go well with the vocals. Which reminds me, as for the vocals, they're incredible. I wasn't ever into the whole screaming thing that much, but this band pulls it off so well, I've gotten much more into it,
        especially when you're pissed off.

My review for every song is as folllows:

        Waking The Fallen: 10/10
-Can't go wrong with an intro.

        Unholy Confessions: 10/10
-Some of the strongest words I've ever heard. Especially
the line "I know it's hurting you, but it's killing me."

        Chapter Four: 8.5/10
-Catchy verse and awesome chorus, however I'd expect Avenged Sevenfold
to be a bit more original than developing a song from the bible, which they tend to do often with songs like "Beast and The Harlot" or "Sidewinder."

        Remenissions: 7.5/10
-I thought the verse riff was a bit misplaced because the riff
starts out all hard and then goes soft, so I thought it was a bit distracting.

        Desecrate Through Reverence: 9.5/10
-Awesome hard track. You can feel his anger surge when he says "Spit in my face!" I love this song because it's about standing up to people.
Also, that harmonic through the verse really catches your ears.

        Eternal Rest: 5/10
-Only song I didn't really care for. I thought it was a huge mess.
The solo was just a cluster of scales with no rhythm or melody, just insanity.

        Second Heartbeat: 10/10
-Unbelievable song. The solo is absolute perfection, incredibly fast.
Really touchy song too, about losing friends and memories.

        Radiant Eclipse: 9/10
-A true headbanger with vulgar lyrics. I love the anticipation for the first line of the song to come out: "Last night I was shot!"

        I Won't See You Tonight: 10/10
-Most depressing song I've ever heard my entire life. Trust me, it really screws up your day the first time you hear it. However, amazingly powerful and irresistable.

        I Won't See You Tonight Pt.2: 8/10
-I thought they could've done without this song on the album,
but still a very hard and good song.

        Clairvoyant Disease: 8.5/10
-I thought the verse was a bit weak, but once the chorus comes in, it becomes a lot stronger.

And All Things Will End: 9/10
I enjoyed how the band mixed elements of metal and punk in this song; it adds a lot of interest.

        5 out of 5 stars A pinacle in Metalcore.......2006-11-16

(I'm really 18)I've had this cd for a year now and it still impresses me, this is probably the best metalcore band/cd i've heard yet, I like all the songs on the album and half of them completely awesome, the shrilling voice of M. Shadows is raw sounding, the drums are great, i highly reccomend this cd, it is probably there best, far better than City of Evil(i didn't like City of Evil)

        5 out of 5 stars A7X rocks!.......2006-11-12

This is one of those albums you can listen to from start to finish without skipping a track. I absolutely love it. The lyrics and music flow with raw emotion. Especially "I won't see you toight pt 1 and 2". I love the way they set it up as one part being a suicide note and the other part being a reaction to the suicide. This is probably my favorite A7X album.

Because he was gone by age 27, any opportunity to hear Gram Parsons in action is worthwhile. This record was recorded in front of a studio audience and broadcast live on WLIR in New York in March of 1973, a mere six months before Parsons's untimely death. Most of the material comes from his two solo albums (now collected on one CD) and his groundbreaking work with the Byrds and Burritos. Still, there are a few noteworthy additions to the canon, namely an urgent reading of Merle Haggard's "California Cottonfields," a roughshod '50s-rock medley, and the relatively obscure sacred tune "Country Baptizing," which was written by North Carolina fiddler Jim Shumate, a onetime member of both Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys and then Flatt & Scruggs's Foggy Mountain Boys. Parsons's touring band, the Fallen Angels, play with fire and looseness, especially Neil Flanz on pedal steel, and, of course, the wonderful Emmylou Harris harmonizes ever so passionately with the lead Fallen Angel. --Marc Greilsamer

Granddaddy of the Hollywood studios, Paramount Pictures is rightfully proud of its century of contributions to both American cinema and the art of film scoring. But the first disc of this 43-track double-CD anthology merely hints at the studio's musical peaks, blithely skipping through its first seven decades in just 17 tracks. Indeed, the package as a whole seems more interested in marketing its post-'70s catalog of hits and blockbusters than it does in paying real homage to history and roots. Even rarities like Double Indemnity and The Lost Weekend are served up via modern budget-line rerecordings, as is Ennio Morricone's epochal Once upon a Time in the West). Contemporary recordings of Aaron Copland's rare score to The Heiress and Franz Waxman's great Sunset Blvd. fare better, but soundtrack fans may miss the originals. The studio's rich pop-crossover successes in the '60s are documented via Breakfast at Tiffany's "Moon River" and excerpts from Romeo and Juliet and Love Story, while successful franchises like Star Trek and Raiders also get their due. Too often the '90s-focused second disc only underscores some uncomfortable trends in contemporary scoring--orchestral nervous tics punctuated by booming crescendos, treacly piano Muzak--and makes one wonder if the music of The Rugrats Movie and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider are really film music milestones. --Jerry McCulley

Ziggy Marley & the Melody Makers have finally resigned themselves to the fact that genes are greater than inspiration. While most rock brood-- Jakob Dylan, Jeff Buckley, Donovan Leitch--desperately kick to distance themselves from their paternal heritage, with each new album the Marley children of Jamaica move closer toward father Bob Marley's sound and acumen. On their eighth album Fallen Is Babylon, the Melody Makers surreally echo the late '70s, electric reggae work of their senior. Ziggy's voice has matured into a honeyed growl that is virtually indistinguishable from that of his father. The consciousness-rooted songwriting picks up where Bob left off with later tracks like `"Coming in from the Cold" and "Pimper's Paradise." And the whole project was consummated at the historic Tuff Gong Studio, rebuilt and rechristened Marley Music Studio. The problem is that as the Melody Makers evolve into the perfect Bob clone, they relinquish their own often imaginative identity. Stripped of the potent, passionate feel of the band's earlier discs, Fallen Is Babylon sounds like nothing more revelatory than a tribute album. --Aidin Vaziri
