4 out of 5 stars Beats, Bounce and Trance.......2007-06-01

There are so many things that Armin is and dull is not one to be considered. Having never heard of Armin before the release of the title track 'Shivers' I went and got the album and haven't looked back.

The opening track 'Wall of Sounds' made me worry that I'd broken my CD player when it started. I was drawn in by the accessible beats and easy going sounds. Mixed with Suissa's dynamic vocals, this track is awesome.

'Empty State' doesn't strike me too hard as anything special but still easy listening with plenty of bounce and give. 'Shivers' ... the track is why I bought the album - enough said.

'Golddigger' will appeal to some and disappoint others. It's very much a track that not everyone will like, but certainly worth it.

The album coasts along with dynamic tracks with Armin working with the likes of Gabriel and Dresden and Ray Wilson. The song 'Who is Watching' featuring Nadia Ali I was a little disappointed with. With her past hits 'Rapture', 'At The End', 'Smooth' and 'Runaway' and the previous bounce-a-licious beats of the 'Shivers' album I was expecting a lot. It took a few repeat listens before the song really started to become enjoyable for me.

All in all, Armin gave it all he had and hell, it worked. This album might be getting a bit of a beating, but it's to the listeners taste and it was much tasty for me.

4 out of 5 stars Not for the traditionals........2007-03-24

If you're completely attached to trance, you're not going to enjoy this. The cd is a total mix of electronica. But for those of you who are willing to dive in, you're in for a surprisingly good mix of music.

The first three tracks are mostly trance, even I feel that track two has some elements of down tempo. Track four definitely has the down tempo going. Track five, however, is for the purists. An incredible combination of AVB with Gabriel and Dresden. Track six, on the other hand, is a nice vocal piece, but track seven completely reverts back to down tempo. As for the last three tracks, good solid progressive.

The flow of the cd is incredible. The choices for tracks flow seemlessly into eachother even though they are so varied.

So if you're a little experimental, you're going to like this.

5 out of 5 stars One of my AVB favorites!!!.......2006-09-08

I don't understand all the bashing of this album! I loved it! Then again I liked some of Armin's previous stuff but some of it I wasn't crazy about. This album is very different from ASOT 2005 but in my opinion, in a good way. I am a freak about sound systems, and this cd is perfect for when I feel like zoning out and listening to something techy-sounding w/skull-rattling bass. The vocals are good and not cheesy! If you just listen to this CD on a regular stereo then you probably won't like it!

4 out of 5 stars Purists beware.......2006-03-21

Armin has been mixing a blend of styles for as long as I've been listening to ASOT (which is a hell of a long time), and while it is true that he tends to champion uplifting trance more than any other mainstream DJ with the possible exception of Ferry Corsten, it should not come as a surprise to his long-time fans that he would use progressive, tribal or even tech in his sets and studio mixes. Now he has brought that versatility to his second ever artist album, and while his penchant for popular album mixing/production was never that of an Oakenfold or Tiesto, the attempt came off most pleasantly in my opinion.

Previous reviewer, Armin was right; trance IS evlolving. It will never be what it was 7 years ago, and it's not even going to be what it was like last year. This CD reflects how Armin is evolving with it. Gone is the formulaic uplifting trance of yore, replaced by a selection of tracks that are not necessarily even in 4/4 beat, tracks that combine the sleek melodies of his earlier years with wicked techy basslines that remind one of Klitzing productions. Klitzing, minus the driving percussions and acid synths and plus a good dose of often unnecessarily cheesy vocals. It is a valiant attempt to try something new, which must always be applauded for one so well established as Armin; would it not be easier to just produce another uplifting trance album as many of you suggest he should have done?

If there was one thing I dreaded when listening to this CD for the first time was the static repetition of used and reused motifs of years past, washed and watered beyond listenability, another ASOT 2004. I am glad to say, while there are pure trance tracks, like Serenity and ZoCalo (which is a GREAT track, don't let anyone tell you otherwise!!) there are also others, as I already mentioned, which use breakbeats, guitars and wicked basslines to shake up your listening experience to the right level.

My one big complaint, Armin, is ALL THE VOCALS!!! There are too few instrumental tracks in the album, and this gets sort of annoying. I would have loved a nice ambient sounding instrumental track in there somewhere, sort of along the lines of Prodemium except with a nice chill beat. And some of the vocals are just plain bad; too cheesy for all but the most mainstream listener, which, I remind you, most of your listeners are not. For instance, the superb production that is 'Empty State' is needlessly ruined by some very subpar vocals.

I also question the association with Remy & Klinkenberg; yeah Armin sometimes spins their stuff, but man are their two styles incompatible for production purposes!! The track itself proves my point. It is flat, sort of forced and entirely out of place in the album.

Overall, good album, good listen, better than I expected, but far from perfect.

2 out of 5 stars I should have read the reviews first. .......2006-02-27

Ugh. Come on Armin. What's this??!!

I agree with Doctor Trance. Armin is SUPER at mixing Vocal, Melodic, Epic and Euphoric trance. Now he is into some Techy, High NRG Trance. I so enjoyed Disc 1 of A State of Trance 2005 that I didn't do much research before buying this one. Big mistake. I think I was lured to the disc as well because in iTunes it's listed with a genre of Dance. So I thought it was staying true to the Dance/Trance of Disc 1 of ASOT 2005. No!

I guess the clue to this rude awakening comes from Armin on his website:

"I think trance is becoming a broader term for a lot of different genres; it's no longer a specific kind of music within the dance scene," says Armin, widely credited with creating the blueprint track for the genre, Blue Fear, at the tender age of 19,. "Trance has elements of all different types of music. I play a lot of tracks that are labelled as progressive, tribal progressive, techno, trance, euphoric trance, vocal trance, melodic progressive... These days it's really hard to label a specific sound. Styles are mutating and evolving into this all-over new sound, which is basically dance music going back to its roots. There's so much good music out there and I don't want to limit myself to just one style."

HELL NO Armin! Trance is Trance. You play different genres so as to maximise your appeal to diverse tastes in clubs, and you don't like being pigeon-holed into one type of Electronic Music. (I've heard you say that in an interview.)

You of all people should know better. For a refresher, go here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trance_music#Musicology_and_styles

That is perhaps good for you (because you don't get bored and can expand into other areas.) But you know what? You let your fans down. Really, I don't know what to expect when seeing Armin live anymore. He sends you this way, then that. One minute you're dancing, next minute you are looking at your watch to see how much more of the next song you have to endure. It makes for a bumpy ride and lacks consistency. People prefer to know what they are paying for. Moreover, we want Armin to deliver a high percentage of Melodic and Euphoric Trance. Not entertain himself with diffent styles of music. Put it on a separate CD and don't label it DANCE or Trance.

Anyway, on to the CD. The worthwhile tracks here are:
7. Who is watching (featuring Nadia Ali of IIO)
10. Serenity (featuring Jan Vayne)
11. Hymne

Armin, many of your fans feel betrayed.

If you are looking for a good Trance fix, check out 'Just Be' by Tiesto, or 'Kingdom: Passport to the Netherlands' by Ferry Corsten.

Zez Confrey (1895-1971) may not be a household name, but his 1921 masterpiece "Kitten on the Keys" certainly is. The Illinois-born composer studied the classics growing up, but somehow the temptation of Vaudeville sneaked its way into his compositions and he found success writing catchy ragtime miniatures with goofy names ("Wise Cracker Suite," "Dizzy Fingers," "Blue Tornado"). Republic of Georgia pianist Eteri Andjaparidze performs 24 of Confrey's works with technical perfection and plenty of spirit--two requirements for these compositions--but sounds a tad robotic on some numbers. Between "Kitten" and 1959's "Fourth Dimension," Confrey explored blues, rags, Latin rhythms, and--of course--jazz, but the real highlight here is a slow number, the four-movement Moods of a New Yorker. In sum, this a great tribute featuring great music, perfect for fans of George Gershwin, Ferde Grofé, Jelly Roll Morton, and Joseph Lamb. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars Oh, Kitten...it's a Must Have.......2004-12-29

Hats off to Naxos for releasing this absolutely perfect tribute to Zez Confrey - it was high time, someone had to do it, and Naxos has done Confrey real justice. One would expect caricature of his work, rather than the respectful, honest, accurate renditions of his work featured on this album.

I discovered my love for Confrey thanks to the Aeolian Hall Birth of Rhapsody in Blue album (another of my reviews covers that great one), which featured a small selection of his compositions. The distinct, unique sound of his work snagged me immediately, and so I was thrilled to come upon this little Naxos treat.

Every piece on the album is sheer delight, but several do stand out from the rest. "Kitten on the Keys" (Confrey's most famous composition, here done full justice), "Meandering" (which just glides and lilts along like feathers on a breeze), "Kinda Careless" (a sensuous, seductive little number), "Yokel Opus" (a snappy little foxtrot), "Coaxing the Piano" (which seems almost an homage to 'Twelfth Street Rag', in a skewed way), "Movie Ballet" (which sounds exactly like its title would suggest), and "Rhythm Venture" (so gracefully syncopated, it's practically a marvel).

Any and all Confrey and jazz fans should consider this album as required listening, and well worth owning. The price alone is reason enough - you cannot go wrong with Naxos' rates. But even if it were four times the price, it would still be a bargain.

4 out of 5 stars Almost , Nearly, perfect.......2003-10-25

Wonderful selection of pieces, most of these are lesser-known Confrey and tend to represent his more "Serious" music. Perhaps because of that the pianist (a superb performer) tends to emphasize their concert qualities over their popular music aspects. This is only a tiny complaint. There's a lot of excellect music here, and at Naxos' low price it's a bargan.

5 out of 5 stars Much more than Kitten On the Keys.......2002-05-16

If you thought an album of Zez Confrey music would be track after track like Dizzy Fingers or Kitten On the Keys, you are in a for a pleasant surprise with this superb CD.

The performances of the said party pieces are fast, furious and fun, but there are also some great blues renditions, and some lyrical, reflective pieces.

I would have preferred if the CD had included a few more of the well-known pieces like My Pet, Poor Buttermilk and You Tell 'Em, Ivories, but the many pieces I had never heard of are interesting, and are played beautifully.

5 out of 5 stars Zany yet poetic!.......2000-09-04

Once again, in its "American Classics" series, Naxos has pulled a pleasant surprise rabbit out of the hat. Zez Confrey must be a new name for virtually everyone, unless they are well past my own age, and I don't go back quite that far. The name was certainly new for me, but a few of the pieces on this disc brought memories flooding back, most likely because my parents once had them coupled on an ancient 78 shellac.

Confrey (1895 - 1971) had been relegated pretty much to the dustbin of history before this release. But he did have his days in the sun between the two world wars. Undoubtedly his brightest moment was when he shared billing with George Gershwin and Paul Whiteman on the occasion of the premiere for Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, where Confrey had the stage in the first half of the concert and Gershwin in the second. For the most part, after that February, 1924 "An Experiment in Modern Music" concert of Whiteman's, the paths of Gershwin and Confrey began to diverge; Gershwin was, to put it simply, an overnight success.

All of the music on this album is fun, and virtually all of it demands virtuosic pianistic ability, which Confrey must certainly have possessed. Listening to it is like taking a trip down memory lane, back to the popular music in the first third of the previous century. There are pieces which have clear roots in ragtime, embellished upon and brought forward by a few decades, and at least a selection or two which sound very much like Gershwin preludes in their "bluesy" feel. It's also clear that Confrey was not unaware of the classical music of the period, because a few of the pieces capture the idioms of the piano music of Rachmaninoff and Ravel of that period (although they soon veer off into "Confrey territory"). If you listen carefully, you'll even hear a passing reference or two to Chopin. But, like the Rachmaninoff and Ravel musical allusions, these too are in fact just "passing references."

But most of the album is pure Confrey-style pianistic wizardry: Fleet fingers, crossing hands, syncopations and rhythmic "irregularities" with the colorfully descriptive titles of "Meandering", "Coaxing the Piano" and "Stumbling." And his two most famous pieces (which, probably, many of us have never heard), "Kitten on the Keys" and "Dizzy Fingers." (In fact, it was "Dizzy Fingers" and "Stumbling" which must have been the coupling on that ancient 78, because they were immediately recognizable.)

Eteri Andjaparidze is an excellent technician in this work, which can be very demanding of technique if it is to be pulled off properly. By and large, she does very well by it. In particular, she succeeds in capturing the passing allusions to the classical piano music of the time. If I had my druthers, I might ask for a little more panache, or insouciance, if you like, in the Confrey specialities noted in the previous paragraph. But who can quibble, especially at the Naxos price, without appearing to be a piker?

Neat stuff for a refreshing change of pace, with an opportunity to hear an hour's worth of music by someone who had been ignored for too long. That's a "get it" recommendation!

Bob Zeidler

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2000-03-22

I have no idea what Jason Verlinde meant by saying that Eteri Andjaparidze sounds "a tad robotic" on certain pieces on her new Zez Confrey album; indeed, the Republic of Georgia pianist sounds absolutely marvelously free in her interpretations. I cannot hear anything "robotic" at all in her playing. She approaches the intricate syncopations of Confrey's music with dazzling style. She is technically proficient enough to take Confrey's tempi at a furious pace, when necessary, in pieces such as "Kitten on the Keys" and "Dizzy Fingers," and to create a sustained, beautiful flow to the music in such "impressionistic" pieces as "Sparkling Waters" and "Mighty Lackawana." The selections which will remind the listener of Art Deco New York in the 1920's and 1930's, are taken at exactly the right tempo, and Ms. Andjaparidze syncopates the rhythms in a sparkling manner. I was utterly amazed at how a pianist, trained in the Republic of Georgia, could evoke the rhythms and style of American music of this type. But she does! In addition, the piano has been recorded beautifully, with sparkling tone at the treble end, and a rich, full bass. I purchased this CD a few hours after reading Frank Behrens' review. It is a wonderful addition to my collection of American music. I urge you to hear this excellent release. Naxos is to be commended for making it available.

            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars One of the best rock albums out in a long time.......2003-12-21

This album deserves all its critical buzz. It has smart, funny, and overtly sexual lyrics, irreverantly bouncy yet charged guiter and and his drunkenly powerful voice. Theres more to this guy than his trademark shimmery star stickers and an Empire Records cameo (which is probably where you first heard him, singing on the roof with Renee Zelleweger).

If you like this cd, check out his 1996 5 song EP "Half a Rock and Roll Record" which is great.

            5 out of 5 stars Coyote Rocks!.......1999-12-02

I think Coyote Shivers is one of the coolest singers/songwriters ever. His style is just so differet. You just don`t hear people like that anymore. A no one does or ever did it as well as Coyote. He is truly one of a kind. And if your smart you will get his CD because it is worth wild. And you will love it, no matter who you are.

5 out of 5 stars SUGAR HIGH IS THE BEST SONG EVER.......1999-01-25
