On this impressive collection of gospel songs Elvis is variously backed by the Jordanaires, Sweet Inspirations, Imperials and the Stamps Quartet. Chronologically the material ranges from songs recorded from 1957 to the early 1970s. They are mostly gospel classics but there are also later compositions like Put Your Hand In The Hand which was a pop hit in 1971.

Several styles are represented, from the slow and solemn hymns like Take My Hand Precious Lord, He Touched Me and I Believe to rhythmic uptempo tracks like Joshua Fit The Battle, By And By and Working On The Building with its lovely backing vocals. My personal favorites include the opening track Take My Hand, this version of Amazing Grace, How Great Thou Art, In The Garden and Where Could I Go But To The Lord.

I was a bit surprized to learn that Swing Down Sweet Chariot is an uptempo rock song, not the well-known Swing Low Sweet Chariot. The music is inspiring and soulful, revealing the devotional side of the magnificent king of rock and roll. The booklet contains an informative history of Elvis' gospel recordings by Brian Nevill and four photographs: full color one of the Jordanaires and Millie Kirkham, a black and white one of the Imperials plus the front and back pics of Elvis.

These songs sure bring back some good memories of singin in church. I remembered almost all of them and felt just as good singing them as I did as a teenager. To me Elvis Presley's gospel albums were the best of anything he did. whiling listening to him sing you can feel his love of gospel music coming through. As a teenager I had all his gospel albums but they got ruined when I moved from home. Great memories, great singing.

Gospel music was Elvis' first love and at the time of his discovery by the late Sam Phillips he was seriously considering joining the Songfellows, a gospel quartet, instead of signing to Sun Records. Throughout his career Elvis always used full gospel groups rather than backing singers, on stage and in the studio. At the same time that he was recording All Shook Up in January 1957, he was also recording songs for a gospel EP, Peace In The Valley, all of which were included on Elvis' Christmas Album later that year, and also appear here. 
This collection also draws from three gospel albums that Elvis released: His Hand In Mine (1960), How Great Thou Art (1966) and He Touched Me (1971) and a couple of stray tracks including his hit single Crying In The Chapel, plus a medley of two songs he recorded and filmed at the Elvis On Tour sessions but which remained in the can until 1994. 
Although a great rock singer, unlike his contemporaries, Elvis had the range to sing with an unmatched purity and sincerity on both devotional gospels and secular ballads and wasn't afraid to match his voice with the best gospel singers in the business, as this set ably demonstrates

    Once you hear this chorus...whether under the Red Army Choir or Soviet Army Choir banner...you will be addicted. I certainly am. This is not the best disc available on Amazon, but it is unique in that it showcases all Russian songs (since the chorus was a "national" choir, recordings done in London, Paris, etc. frequently contain songs from other countries). And while there may be better and more professional recordings, of this choir and more professional bands, these soldiers succeed in achieving a wide range of color with their vocal talent on this recording. A great bargain.

    The songs that are chosen on this CD are excellent. The problem, the sound recording is not great. It is clear, but when the choir sings in a low tone, it is simply cannot be heard.

    In the 1970's, it seemed that defectors from the USSR made headlines in American newspapers every day. When a dancer defected, it was always believed that artistic freedom was the cause. When writers defected, it was due to the controversy surrounding their works. Athletes were usually viewed as wanting a taste of the good life, but when the Red Army Choir defected, it was a sweet victory for the west. These people were the symbol of all the USSR stood for and sang anthems praising the Soviets, yet they longed for freedom. We loved it when they defected.

    Even though many of the songs performed by the ensemble praised the virtues of the Soviet Union, western audiences love the group. No it was not due to be soft on Communism. The group had a sound that was addictive and possessed terrific musical gifts, all of which can be found in this recording.

    Listening to this recording is almost nostalgic now that the Soviet Union is no longer, but the recording has a certain appeal. It includes all the favorites including Meadowlands (Polyushku pole), Dark Eyes, Moscow Nights, and the Volga Boatman's Song, probably the best piece on the recording. The ensemble performs well together, the band give the music a distinct sound, and while the soloists are not perfect, the imperfections somehow seem appropriate.

    There are more expensive recordings by this ensemble, but this budget CD is not just well worth the price, it is actually one of the best available.

    Considering the number of classic songs and the price, you really can't go wrong here. like another poster, i was a bit dissapointed by some very low music in some selections. but for the most part, the quality is quite good and the music is a very nice way to begin to understand and learn about the Russian people.

    This is a very good CD, and the music really captures the power and total authority of the Soviet state. It is very moving music on one hand, and also really reflects the situation of the Russian workingmen living under this tyranny. This CD would get 5 stars, but there are a few portions where the sound is so soft that it cannot be heard, such as at the beginning of the sixth track. This is the only problem with the CD worth noting, the CD is done by the Red Army choir, and the songs are virtually all made of of the huge band & choir, Soviet power music that we all have come to know and love. I do recommend this CD strongly.

    Why must record companies endlessly churn out the same familiar stuff, when Tauber recorded many hundreds of songs and operatic items?

    And, as another reviewer has justly indicated, at least make the CD contents audible. It's just too irritating to have to keep altering the volume because some engineer didn't bother to get the level right in the first place.

    Isn't it possible for recording companies to set a common standard of volume level, particularly when the originals were recorded in a constricted dynamic?

    Okay, apart from the rant, Tauber still sounds fine, but some less stale material would be nice. How about next time including some of his radio and stage recordings, such as excerpts from his final Covent Garden performance as Don Ottavio?

    Everything Tauber attempted gets my attention. I don’t wish to hear again, however the adaptation of the Strauss waltz “G’shichten aus dem Wiener Wald” that is included here. I eagerly await a reissue of something called “Love Lost Forever More” which featured in “Blossom Time”, one of Tauber’s films.

    David Lennick’s transfers are satisfactory, but the volume level is very low.

    I found this compilation at a local independent music shop that closed long ago. I remember it being rather expensive, but after glancing at the back cover, I saw a lot of tracks I didn't recognize. The only other Sandra album (or compilation) I ever owned was 18 Greatest Hits.

    Let me state right away that the remixes on disc one are very hit-and-miss, as described by other reviewers. The unpardonable sin is the remix of Hiroshima, which nearly ruins one of Sandra's most beautifully-sung and poignant songs. However, there is a great remix of Around My Heart, one of my personal favorites. What I did enjoy the most was listening to songs I never heard before. Mirrored in Your Eyes, Tell Me More, Celebrate Your Life- these are great songs. What really blew me away, though, were Won't Run Away (a dazzling hi-energy number, bubbling with positive energy) and Way To India (sheer, exotic perfection).

    Like many others, I find myself more entranced by the second disc. Sandra's material from the eighties is full of catchy pop ditties, awash in tongue-in-cheek innocence and sweet bubblegum synth-pop arrangements. With her epic Close to Seven album, Sandra said goodbye to that era, and emerged as a more seductive, imaginative artist. Speaking of which, I just love how disc two begins with No Taboo. This is the Sandra I love the most, what I call her "polite dominatrix" persona. Next comes Johnny Wanna Live. Yes, it's an animal-rights song, but it also happens to be one of her most melodic and lovely singles. Then, Sandra revisits her sexy persona with Don't Be Aggressive. I'm going to probably catch flack for this, but IMO, this almost blows Madonna's Justify My Love out of the water. The hook is almost as titillating, and Sandra's vocal delivery is damn-near as seductive as Madonna. Where Sandra tops the Queen of Pop, though, are the lyrics. She's not taking trains to Paris cross-country, or making love in a rainstorm. No, Sandra's offering herself up as your virtual love slave, so long as you treat her right!

    After her make-out ballad One More Night comes Steady Me, another song that oozes sensuality. Just listen to that vocal, like a spring of pristine alpine water. The piano hook cools the temperature even more. Skipping ahead two tracks, you are treated to the crown jewel of the whole collection, Seal It Forever. Mercy me, does it get any finer than this??? An exquisite, perfect ballad that is sure to melt your heart.

    Sandra closes the book on her dominatrix/lover persona with I Need Love '95. No more whispered longings or siren calls. No, she's ready for love, RIGHT NOW, lol. The electro-guitar riff will undoubtedly turn some off, but I think it's perfectly suited for the song's theme.

    The last four tracks of disc two form a brilliant coda. When the Rain Doesn't Come is a sobering tale of an older sibling forced to turn to prostitution to feed her family. I consider it an awareness-raising song, much like Johnny Wanna Live. Sad tales like this occur in times of war and famine in much of the world, even to this day. Nights in White Satin, the next track, lifts our spirits, a soaring cover of an old classic. Synth-pop covers are sometimes ill-advised (Erasure's River Deep, Mountain High, anyone?), but Sandra chose well. After that great cover, we are treated to one of Sandra's most experimental songs ever, First Lullaby. Of course, it's dedicated to her twin sons, who weren't yet born when she recorded it. Beyond that, though, is the crystalline, sparkling background, like stars twinkling high in the night sky. The disc closes with Fading Shades, a brief instrumental track in the same vein as the preceding one.

    The real jewel of this collection is disc 2 which pulls tracks from Sandra's 92's masterpiece album "Close to Seven" (not available on Amazon) and 95's "Fading Shades". All the tracks on disc 2 are great, which also includes First Lullaby which to me, is her greatest and most beautiful song of all time. Disc 2 is mostly slower ballads with a slight upbeat touch. Sandra has a very beautiful soft and seductive voice which makes her perfect for delivering sultry ballads.

    As far as disc 1 is concerned, I am very disappointed. It contains remixes of her past songs, some of which were old hits while some were non-hits. I think they could have done a much better job on the remixing as the originals sounded much better. The only remix better than the original is Secret Land. The rest of the remixes have too much techno and intense club beats to them which destroys the essence and beauty of the originals. For example, ballads such as Way to India should have been left as a slow and romantic song. Increasing the tempo and beats rarely succeed on slower ballads.

    I wish her song Little Girl would have been included as well. It would have been nice to hear an updated version of this classic. Instead of completely changing the beats, what would have been better is to have her old hits updated using modern sounding technology, adding a bit more emphasis on richer sounding bass giving them a 90's feel to 80's songs. In addition, slightly alter the beats but at the same time maintain that original sound which made the songs great in the first place. A perfect example of this is the updated hit I Need Love '95.

    To me, Sandra's 90's work is more fulfilling than her 80's work. Her 80's work were more pop influenced. Her 90's work sounded more sophisticated and atmospheric due to the influence of Enigma. The style changed for the better. Everytime I listen to her later works (disc 2 material are all 90's material), I find myself being transported into a secret land. Her music is very powerful on the human spirit. Because of the strength of disc 2, this compilation is a must have especially if you don't have her Close to Seven cd which is getting very hard to obtain these days.

    I grew up listening to Sandra's earlier music in the mid 80's as a kid. For some 15 years, I had lost my old tapes. After purchasing this My Favourites cd recently, this is the effect that it had on me..... I found myself purchasing all of Sandra's cd's that are currently available, every single one. Yes I got hooked onto her beautiful music. I'm glad to have re-discovered Sandra's music and wish she will continue to release more new material in the future.

    Before I bought this album, I only know that Sandra is the voice behind Engima and she is the wife of Micheal Cretu. I never realize that she is so popular in Europe. She is almost an "alien" in Singapore as the local record stores only carry very few of her albums. Her earlier releases are so hard to find here. But I consider myself very fortunate to find this compliation in the stores. The music it contains are marvellous! Although the price might be a little steep but I think it's really worth it.

    I refer to the Taiwan reviewer who advised to get Her 18 Greatest Hits instead of this. I would suggest for new listener to get this first. I once owned Her 18 Greatest Hits.True enough, there are many beautiful songs that touches my heart but I think the recording is not as good as this one. I only wish that they could include some of those songs like Loreen, Everlasting Love and Life is a Big Insanity in this compliation. And this compliation would be PERFECT!

    The artwork is awesome. Artwork of an album is also a very important attribute to make people buy it. Nowadays, you can also get very good music for free via Internet downloading. But people would still buy the record if it sounds good (good recording and good music) and looks good. This particular compliation just has it all. I loved to admire the beautiful artwork on the paper as well as on the CD.

    Although the edition I own contains more songs, I believe the songs in this particular one (that is available in Amazon.com) is the "deluxe edition" whereby they went through another round of "filtering" to present the ultimate selection. No Doubt, it is still a wise choice to own in your collection. Coz what you have is Best of the Best. You have to believe a fussy listener like me, coz I never allow any lousy album on my shelf! So Don't hesitate! BUY IT NOW! You will never regret your decision!

    Ok the disk 1 is a compilation of the standard single versions.... But the disk 2 IS A DISK OF ONLY REMIXES yes, some of the greates songs of this full tallented diva, are absolutely remixed, and this remixes does not appear in any other disks, are exclusive belongings of this disk!!!, make sound all the songs just new and fresh, an some of the remixes (tell me more and wont run away are even better than the original ones).

    The good points first.The remixes of "CYL" & "In the heat of the night" are indeed very good.But , all those who have heard "Close to 7" won't be pleased with the remixes of "Mirrored in your eyes" & "On your way to India"."Hiroshima" remix is a total fiasco! The extented version ( of the original ) was the finest. "Secret Land" remix is fine - a nice change over the original , which is already a masterpiece.It is surprising that the extended version of "Everlasting love" was not included - it is supposed to be Sandra's favourite song.The Cretus ( & others ) are carefully avoiding giving the original songs of "Close to 7" to their fans.Even if you buy all Sandra's discs (which are still available) you will still be short of 3 original songs of "Close to 7" ( which is not available ) viz. On your way to India , Mirrored in your eyes & Shadows.These originals are so good , remixes can never replace them.There's someone over there who wants to deprive Sandra fans from experiencing her finest performances - when she was on her musical rampage ! This album is a good addition to the Sandra fan's collection - but the inclusion cannot make him/her very pleased. But I am thankful that some songs of " Close to 7 " are included in the second disc - which is some relief for the "Close to 7" hunter. Go ahead - BUY IT . The remixes do have the new age "techno" beats which makes good music - especially when you are driving a car - in other words , good software for the Sandra fan's car stereo.

    Takako Nishizaki, violin, and Wolf Harden, piano, recorded these transcriptions by Fritz Kreisler in Francfort between 1982 and 1984. Most of the pieces were originally popular orchestral movements, and Kreisler transformed them into bite-sized chunks for violin with piano accompaniment either as 'encores' for his concerts or as 'fillers' for the B-sides of his 78 RPM records. They were obviously not intended to be heard together as a programme, but nevertheless this CD provides an hour or so of fine entertainment with well-known melodies galore, and it only takes a touch of the 'random' or 'shuffle' button on one's remote control to re-order the programme and get a few surprises. The recording is, by Naxos standards, excellent, Miss Nishizaki standing prominently on the left and the piano less prominently in the centre.

    Of course, one could have reservations about Kreisler's manner of treating the romantic repertoire. He is known to have, on occasion, passed off his own compositions as the works of others, and Keith Anderson, in his liner notes, points out that Kreisler was the first famous violinist to introduce the constant use of vibrato, to avoid the use of the whole bow and to consider practice as a 'bad habit'! That was almost enough to turn me off this music before I had even heard it (I love 'historical performance practice'), but on second thoughts I suppose Kreisler himself is now history and deserves a faithful rendering just as much as the composers he himself loved (and falsified). Takako Nishizaki is probably an ideal interpreter, having devoted herself to Kreisler and produced a complete edition of his solo violin works. The young Wolf Harden is an accompanist, no more, but the end-result is a relaxing one that needn't be taken more seriously than one would take Kreisler himself.

      On this impressive collection of gospel songs Elvis is variously backed by the Jordanaires, Sweet Inspirations, Imperials and the Stamps Quartet. Chronologically the material ranges from songs recorded from 1957 to the early 1970s. They are mostly gospel classics but there are also later compositions like Put Your Hand In The Hand which was a pop hit in 1971.

      Several styles are represented, from the slow and solemn hymns like Take My Hand Precious Lord, He Touched Me and I Believe to rhythmic uptempo tracks like Joshua Fit The Battle, By And By and Working On The Building with its lovely backing vocals. My personal favorites include the opening track Take My Hand, this version of Amazing Grace, How Great Thou Art, In The Garden and Where Could I Go But To The Lord.

      I was a bit surprized to learn that Swing Down Sweet Chariot is an uptempo rock song, not the well-known Swing Low Sweet Chariot. The music is inspiring and soulful, revealing the devotional side of the magnificent king of rock and roll. The booklet contains an informative history of Elvis' gospel recordings by Brian Nevill and four photographs: full color one of the Jordanaires and Millie Kirkham, a black and white one of the Imperials plus the front and back pics of Elvis.

        This is the third greatest hits album of this outstanding German singing sensation Sandra. Unfortunatley she is almost unknown on this side of the globe, hence, if you happen by chance to hear one of her songs, and fell under her spell, then this is the one album you need to grab.

        it didn't sell well, not because of the material, but because Sandra already has "10 on 1" and "18 greatest hits", the last accompanied also with a VHS version. also she released only one more album "Fading Shades 1995" after the "18 Greatest Hits 1992", so basically the fans had all her "favorites". The idea of having a double disc greatest hits, with the second disc being "mixes" turned out to be a commercial flop. this album, and also Whitney Houston's greatest hits, proved this theory (So I don't know why they still do it!)

        But all in all great album. Sandra's voice might need some time to get used to, but she definately stands out as one of the most unique voices ever. I highly recommend this item as it highlights the best of her career. Songs you might wanna try are "maria magdalena", "hi! hi! hi!", and "secret land"

        Hi! That's it again! One of the best CDs I have listened to. I've listened her songs for 8 years as I remeber. And listening her songs takes me back in the past, especially the time when I was in love at the first time. I think the CD wasn't easy to get but I got it! I haven't seen her conserts but I hope one day I can see her. I suggest the CD for everyone who likes Sandra, Enigma and Enya. At least I do and I like their music. Well done!
