Rules for Jokers is the third CD from Thea Gilmore, a British singer-songwriter who is equally at home with delicate acoustic ballads and stinging, electric-guitar-driven songs. Gilmore's lyrics are full of dense, poetic imagery, and she delivers them with an urgency that wouldn't be out of place in a punk band. Even when she sings a melodically gentle song like "Holding Your Hand" or "Take Me Home," with its suggestively swaying rhythm, her fierceness is never far from the surface. And when she lets loose and cranks up the volume on "Fever Beats" and "This Girl Is Taking Bets," the words flow from her with a bitter wit that recalls Elvis Costello in his younger, angrier days. Thea Gilmore wrote and recorded these songs when she was only 21 years old. If she sounds this good now, how much better will she be when she's had a chance to see more of the world? --Michael Simmons
Customer Reviews:
I've been waiting for this..........2003-02-08
...for a long time. Thea Gilmore's US debut is wonderful. If you like folk music with a twist (like Ani Difranco), this CD is for you. She's similar to Ani, but not the same. She has many differences but she is still awsome. I particularly liked Saviours and All, This Girl is Taking Bets, Holding your Hand, and Movie Kisses. This record is great, pick it up.

TOTAL DISAPPOINTMENT.......2004-12-16
Let me preface this by saying that I am a total TTD fan (Sananda)and that I wanted so badly to like this cd however, it was a total disappointment.
Every song on here is dull... tired... low energy. What happened to the raw passion... the funk... the voice that when heard, evoked a mixture of Otis Redding and Janis Joplin with a just let it RIP!!! sound.
Sounds like he is holding back on every song and what is up with this band... even when he does try to give you a sampling of what was, the band falls short.
True story... my newphew who his 16 years old (totally into RAP... I don't think he has every heard any of TTD music) was riding with me in my car.. I poped in Vibrator.. Holding on to You to be exact, and my nephew made the statement... "who is that... he sho nuff sound like he is holdin on for dear life!"
That's the TTD (Sananda) that would make you listen... even if you didn't want to!
Don't get me wrong, I don't knock spiritually, evolution, change, etc. however, seems like he has MORPH into the run of the mill POP singer.
Whoa is me!!!! Where did the funk... the stank go. Bring it back please!
A Masterwork.......2004-06-22
It's all come together on this record. Without question an artistic benchmark for Sananda. Simply excellent songwriting that is heartfelt, diverse, and much else besides. One can definitely tell that years of introspection, life, love, and release have gone into this art...and that this time he means it.
The "Hardline" years almost seem like another lifetime ago, as well as the famous boast that it was the "best new record since Sgt. Pepper." Ahh, the confidence of youth. But in my mind, he's finally gotten there with this record. Yes, it's that good.
On a personal note, I saw Sananda in Austin at the (now gone) Liberty Lunch back in 1995, during the Vibrator tour, where for some reason the people let my friend and I in for free because they thought we were part of the band! (Welcome to Austin! they said!)....ahhh please forgive the reminiscance....
I'm delighted and excited with this record, and with Sananda's excellent and open website as well. Pay it a visit! www.sanandamaitreya.com
The twenty first century has gotten off to an excellent start, that's for sure.
UNMISTAKABLE VOICE THAT BLOWS YOU AWAY.......2003-12-10
I was very surprised to find out that Terence Trent D'Arby had
changed his name altogether (to Sananda) and made this all new album. It seemed sort of like a disguise to me, or that Terence was trying to avoid being pigeon-holed by his former career. This is a very novel idea-to come back and show everybody that it is his talent , not his name, that takes him places musically. It also shows incredible confidence in his abilities. To me it seemed far-fetched though, since you can not possibly hear him sing and not immediately know who it is. He's got a classic powerhouse voice that will probably always harken back to his former hits, but on Wildcard, he continues to excell in his art. I was not at all sure what this new cd with so many tracks on it would sound like, and I was so blown away by it after just one listen. It appears that this album has been an incredible effort for the artist to make a truly great cd, and I think he has certainly done it. His style shows through in every track ,and the songs take you places you have never been before. Every track is unique and original to me, and once again his voice just couldn't be more amazing in range and texture and maturity. If you at all liked D'Arby's earlier work, this one will be an unexpected treasure. I hope that more people catch on to this album and it becomes as appreciated as it really deserves. This one should have spawned a number of commercial hits if the music scene weren't so fickle.
Absolute Class!.......2003-10-17
This CD is simply CLASS! From start to finish there is never a dull moment with more melodies & hooks than you have any right to expect from one CD.
TTD has never failed to impress with each comeback. Get this album if you are a lover of music!
Hot Damn!.......2003-07-04
What a great CD! Sananda has got it going on from start to finish. This is the best cd of the year! I've been waiting for an album to really move me. I can't put it down. I've heard an extended tour of the US will be coming up (it's about time). Couldn't make it to the Chicago show. Great Performance of Designated Fool on Jay Leno! Hopefully Sananda will hit Minneapolis next time around...

You have to take what's available.......2006-02-23
This is a decent representation of Rafferty's work from his early folk duo,The Humblebums (partnered with Billy Connolly, no less) to his early 80's solo work and the wonderful "Baker Street." There are a number of quality tunes here and the chatty liner notes proved to be an interesting retrospective of Rafferty's career, but as another reviewer noted, this package is lacking some key songs. At least try to collect all the singles from the time period. I am ofetn disappointed by the lack of completeness with these greatest hits sets, but sometimes you have to take what's available.
Magnificent Gerry Rafferty complilation!.......2005-10-05
This Gerry Rafferty compilation is everything it should be and more! It has his work with The Humblegums, Stealer's Wheel and his solo work! It is the most comprehensive compilation of Gerry Rafferty that you can get, to date. The sound is great and you couldn't ask for better, in a compilation, really. This is a must for Gerry Rafferty/70's pop/rock fans!
Baker Street is excellent........2005-05-10
My comments regard only the song "Baker Street" from this record.
Of course I love Baker Street. There is a lot going on in that track, sophisticated and excellent. Comparing it with the (obscenely bad) Foo Fighters cover shows both the weaknesses of the Fighters' arrangement as well as the talent, polish, intelligence, and diligence of Rafferty's producer.
I personally don't like solo sax much and so it doesn't touch me as much as it seems to touch others, but even so I can see that the sax intro and other sax parts are electrifying. I respect this production choice because for so many people the sax is the only part of the song they identify and according to some reviews the sax bought most of that copious radio air-time in 1978. On the other hand, it's a shame to see this overstated sound overshadow the rest of the beautiful song in peoples' minds.
The swooping guitars are awesome and yet subtle and fill a crucial spot in the intro melody. The guitar solo is masterful. Much of the time in the solo is taken up with only a few sustained and repeated notes and the bulk of the solo is made up of bends, trills, swoops, dives, and inventive tremelos. Each note of the minimal note count speaks out to us in important ways. It reminds me of lyrics that say volumes with only a few words. It's one of my all time favorite guitar solos.
The two featured analog synthesizer sounds are way cool. The synth during the verse sounds like falling leaves or water. The bass synth sound that counterpoints the vocal during the chorous, again, is inventive: an interesting, unusual sound, delightful instrumental melodic counterpoint to the vocal, a melodic sound in this region of the bass territory is also unusual in pop. You usually have the bass drum and the bass guitar in the bass region and that's about it. This synth sound and melody is something like a `cello line, lending an orchestral feel while still using pop instruments.
The lyrics to Baker Street are good, but I wouldn't say great. They give an overall impression of loneliness, futility and yearning for something better in the future. What's there is good but it's not great because the song does not tell a complete story. The "City to City" album from which this song is taken is a concept album and every lyric addresses these issues of loneliness and itinerant living on the road. Considering the entire album's lyrics as a whole pushes them up a notch as ambitious, intelligent, very good, and maybe you could consider the whole as a complete story. They fall short of something blisteringly great like "Eleanor Rigby" (The Beatles) or "She Always a Woman" or "AllenTown" (Billy Joel).
Regarding the Foo Fighters' cover version: The Foo Fighters skip the swooping guitars during the intro melody and you can hear it as dead space, causing a drop in intensity there resulting in an undesirable volume pumping effect. The Fighters copy the guitar solo note for note, what's the point? We've heard that already, and much better, so why bother? Granted I'm not that familiar with post 1989 Pearl Jam clone musical styles so I might be missing something, but to me the Fighters' guitar version of the sax intro melody is just plain wrong. The rhythm is wrong and corny, the accents are in the wrong place, and the guitar sound is so anemic when compared to the sax. Why would a band of the Fighters' stature cover a song anyway? The whole thing is just wrong.
A great collection of songs from a great artist!.......2003-08-05
Being a Gerry Rafferty fan, this is a great collection of songs from a great artist. However, I wished there would have been more songs from his "North and South" and "Snakes and Ladders" albums. Better yet, I wished they could be rerealsed to Cd. Thanks for the great music, Gerry!
Missing some key songs!.......2002-09-21
It seems that many of these "best of" compilations always leave out one or two of an artists hits and replace them with some forgetable deep track. I don't understand what they are thinking when they do this. This collection is more guilty of this than most. They left off 3 top 40 hits - Star (Stealers Wheel), Home & Dry and Days Gone Down - and the album classic City to City! Gerry and Stealers Wheel only had a total of 7 top 40 hits and they leave off nearly half of them!?! Come on now, somebody wasn't paying attention when they put this collection together!

Instrumental, spacey, and very psychedelic jams.......2006-06-26
This 1974 release marks the first in a total series of five albums that feature "pirated" instrumental space jams recorded by this German experimental "supergroup". The musicians on this album include electronic master composer himself Klaus Schulze (synthesizers), members of Wallenstein (Jurgen Dollase - organ/spoken words and Harald Grosskopf - drums); and a single member of Ash Ra Tempel (Manuel Gottsching - guitars). Deiter Dierks produced the album and also played bass guitar - he actually does a pretty good job too. I really like Harald's drumming - he is an exceptionally creative drummer and does a great job of "filling in the blanks". This music is essentially space/psych/prog rock comprised of very spacey, loose, and completely structureless jams that are spread over two lengthy tracks (Galactic Joke = 22'39"; Cosmic Joy = 19'25"). The first track features more in the way of guitars and drums, while the second track essentially consists of "music drifting in from the deep cold and vacuum of space" and reminds me of very early Tangerine Dream.
For those of you that can't get enough of this stuff, five albums were cranked out in 1974 including: (1) The Cosmic Jokers; (2) Galactic Supermarket; (3) Sci-Fi Party; (4) Gilles Zeitschiff; and (5) Planeten Sit In. Of these albums, Gilles Zeitschiff is not all that great.
The eponymous debut is the best of the lot, although Galactic Supermarket is pretty good too. This is truly cosmic bliss - recommended.
Landmark Album........2006-06-12
The Cosmic Jokers were never a real band; in 1973 Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser offered several prominent 'Cosmic' Musicians (style was later called "Krautrock" by the UK press) all the psycedelic drugs they could consume for a recording session. Afterwards he mixed the album together and released it under the title The Cosmic Jokers.
The album is amazingly fluid despite its origins, and it wasn't until the second album was released that many of the musicians that made up The Cosmic Jokers realized they were a part of this so called 'Supergroup'.
Originally only Rolf-Ulrich was credited with this album, but it stands as a landmark album in any sense for its conception and birth under such unique circumstances.
Mind Blowing Surf Music.......2006-06-11
I recently went on an Indonesian boat trip and brought this recording along, and I will tell you this: the music contained on this recording is a heavenly landscape beyond explanation. I cannot put into words what it made me feel, what it made me think about, or what it made me see. Whether you are a musician, a surfer, a philosopher, a tripper, a traveler, a stoner, a driver, or someone who just plain likes music with a higher force, I strongly recommend you check this out. They just dont make it like they used to.
Cosmic Jokers - self-titled (Spalax).......2005-06-20
Originally released in 1974,as this was Cosmic Joker's very first release, out of five(5)lp's.Ironic enough, all five were put out that same year.Cosmic Jokers were a krautrock super-group.Made up of musicians Manuel Gottsching(Ash Ra Tempel),Klaus Schulze(Tangerine Dream),two members from Wallenstein and top-of-the-genre producer Dieter Dierks at the mixing board.CD has just two tracks. Both are lengthy spacy, cosmic, trippy freak-out pieces(call 'em what you will),"Galactic Joke"(22:30)and "Cosmic Joy"(19:24)should fully satisfy any fan hungry for this sort of music. To some of us,there IS no other music.None that matters anyway.Recommended.

From a Former Member of The Band........2003-10-18
This album was originally recorded in 1966 when the group had just been together for about 6 months. All of the members at the time were really just out of high school. Contrary to the "Live" claim on the cover, it was recorded in a small recording studio in Winston Salem, NC with primitive equipment. There was only one recording engineer, and there were few re-takes. The engineer added a lot of reverb to cover any mistakes and give it a "Live" effect. This group eventually dropped the Jokers 6 from the name and just became "The Marlboros". Over the years following this album, the vocalists and musicians improved tremendously and they became one of the top "Beach" bands in the Southeastern U.S. They mainly performed "Motown" and "Beach" cover tunes that were popular in the late 60's. The sound quality of this album does not do justice to the true "Live" performances that this group gave up and down the East Coast. This is a great collectable, especially for those who got to see this group perform in the late 60's and early 70's.

Cosmic Jokers - 'Gilles Zeitschiff' (Spalax).......2006-10-12
Yet,another 1974 title of the Cosmic Jokers.Although it isn't quite AS good as either the self-titled Cosmic Jokers effort or the 'Galactic Supermarket'(see my reviews of both),it's still decent.Obviously not a krautrock classic, but most fans of such should get something out of this CD reissue.Tracks I dug the most were "Cosmic Courier Bon Chance",the eleven-minute adventurous "Electronic Rock Zeitalter" and "De Magier".Line-up:Klaus Schulze-electronics,Gille Lettman-vocals,Manuel Gottsching-guitar,Jurgen Dollase-keyboards,Dieter Dierks-bass and Harold Grosskopf-drums.Good to take out for a spin occasionally.
