Newell Franklin Barrett was a product of Texas. He grew up in Mount Pleasant, Texas and lived with his grandparents, Rich and Ethel Barrett. They, along with his aunt, Arrie Barrett Moreland were very influential to his upbringing. Arrie figured strongly in his formative years as a pianist by supervising his practice and encouraging new goals in contest performance. She was the one who discovered his ability of perfect pitch. Around 1938, about age 4, his uncle pulled into the driveway and tapped twice on his car horn. Newell ran over to the piano and climbed up on the piano stool and played middle c and e above. His aunt heard him and came into the living room and said, "Do that again." Newell played the notes again and said "car horn." That was how this piece of talent was discovered.

While growing up, there were always recitals and appearances in and for local service clubs. He also frequently performed in this grandfather's restaurant. Classical music was about all he could play and the local folks would applaud politely. Every once in a while someone would come over and ask, "how about giving us a little boogie woogie?" That was sometimes tough to accommodate since there were few boogie woogies in print in those days. Newell was a serious young man and one of the most significant needs in his early life was that of solitude and time to pursue knowledge from books and exploration of hobbies. Of course, the old upright piano was also a constant friend in early childhood.

As he matured, his facility with the piano was such that playing things by ear was easier than learning the music. However, once in college, one of his Russian teachers discovered that Newell preferred the keys with flats, over the keys laden with sharps. So, this teacher, gave Newell Rachnaminoff concerto in F# minor, a Stravinsky etude in F3 major and a prelude and Fugue by Bach. At this time, Newell also began studying with German, Italian and Russian teachers and composers, and earnestly pursued the quest for excellence in his music throughout his college years.

From age 16, he had dreamed of a piano that would have its own string accompaniment with perfect synchronization. In 1977 he drew up some designs for the pianist to access various sting sections utilizing the latest synchronization techniques. The design was enough to get the Yamaha Company to study it and five years later (1982) things begin to happen. In reality, it was five more years before this piano was actually ready for Newell to play for the first time. He was so pleased, he eventually acquired two of the pianos.

His career spanned over five decades and his accomplishments were many. From teaching children's music, to performing in various highly respected bands and orchestras. Newell's experiences eventually led him to his distinguished solo career. He shared his gift, playing the finest venues in the Dallas area, including the Loews's Anatole hotel for twelve years. As a recording artist, Newell produced 23 CD's of his own inspired piano interpretations of classic and popular compositions, as well as his own original works.

Newell fully appreciated the wondrous musical gift he was given by god. Next to his family, music was always the main focus of his life. He also had a great sense of humor and passion for knowledge and learning. His great music accomplishments will be enjoyed for generations to come.

      This is a terrific performance of Messiah. Not only are the soloists all superb, but Trevor Pinnock completely contradicts the image of many period instrument performances as small-scale, scrappy affairs. Indeed, he invests the choruses with as much genuine Handelian pomp as Beecham at his most extravagant. The trumpets really blaze, and the timpani thunder, and everyone simply has a great time.       Trevor Pinnock meets with mixed success in this account of the Messiah with the English Concert & Choir and soloists Arleen Auger, Anne Sofie von Otter, Michael Chance, Howard Crook, and John Tomlinson, recorded and released in 1988. Its strengths are the strengths of the early-music movement in general. The size and distribution of the instrumental and vocal forces are optimal, which means that textures are clear and balances apt. Rhythms are nicely pointed, though often, in Pinnock's case, not quite well enough sprung. Tempos are well chosen; for example, "All we like sheep"--which turns out to be one of the set's best numbers--is a real bourré, and Pinnock animates it in just the right way. But the performance often seems workmanlike and unemotional, weighed down in too many instances by the humdrum work of the chorus. The alto section in particular, which is half male and half female, sings timidly and is constantly swallowing its entrances. Bass soloist John Tomlinson is a further drag on the effort. He has the right idea--that there's an Italian opera hiding behind all this biblical imagery--but his cottony sound is out of place, a misguided attempt to mimic Nicolai Ghiaurov. His usable range is less than a tenth (he croaks the low G's and F-sharps), and his diction is horrible. "Thus spake the Lord" is strangled, and when, in "The trumpet shall sound" Tomlinson gets to the words "we shall be changed," one can't help wishing that he had been changed too, right before the sessions started. --Ted Libbey

          This disc recycles two different but complementary LP recordings, the first being a 1968 outing with the Gregg Smith Singers, the New York Brass and Percussion Ensemble, and organist E. Power Biggs, the second being a 1965 recording with André Kostelanetz and his Orchestra. Though the repertoire for both is fairly traditional carols, they make for strange listening now. The Gregg Smith Singers selections are often straightforward, except when Biggs's gimmicky organ intervenes with all sorts of effects that are deployed with the artistry of Fourth of July fireworks. Did we ever mistake Biggs for a musician? Kostelanetz's ultra-busy orchestrations are almost comically souped up with cushy strings, ringing brass, and more harps than you'd ever want to hear. One saving grace is the underrecorded soprano Phyllis Curtin, who sings a lovely version of "O Holy Night." Also on hand is the St. Kilian Boy Choir, which has an unusually robust sound. --David Patrick Stearns

                Yes, I love the Season of Christmas, and even more I love the Reason of Christmas. I have many,many Christmas CDs and "CHRISTMAS IS COMING HOME" has proven to be my favorite Christmas Album over the past couple of years. Every song is special and contains words that will refresh you....even in July. I believe BJ Thomas, to this very day, is under-rated and is truly a World Class Act. After hearing B.J. in Concert in September,I know that he still has it, and anyone that loves good clean music, wants it! I plan to buy extra copies during the year to give as gifts next year. I Love this CD and You Will Too.....Guaranteed!

                3 out of 5 stars B.J.'s Voice brings us the Warmth of Christmas. .......2004-08-05

                This is a well arranged, produced and recorded CD. Of B.J. Thomas' later albums, this is one of the better sounding ones. B.J.'s voice sounds warm and smooth. The melodies of the original songs on this set are of high quality, even if the lyrics include the same tired old rhymes we've heard on Christmas songs a million times, ("this year / good cheer", "shiny toys / girls and boys", "star above / love"). Here in Australia it's strange hearing songs about a cold Christmas.....but we're used to it! The backing instrumental tracks on this CD sound great. On other 'recent' CDs such as "Still Standing Here", "You Call That a Mountain", "Midnight Minute" and "Live", the quality of performance by B.J., and the quality of material and / or production are inconsistent, but on "Christmas is Coming Home", each track is strong, and B.J. himself stays in tune and doesn't sound strained. In my mind there's no doubt that this artist created his best work between about 1966 and 1973, but he was definitely back on track with this album from 1997. One negative thing about the album is the choice of artists for the duets. Whoever Kathy Troccoli is, I feel she was a poor choice. She sounds strained and...well...old. A bit of a 'nothing' voice. Luckily B.J. holds his part on the track with her beautifully. I've never heard of Tabitha Fair either. She sounds too over-sweet and nasal, but I suppose at least she holds the tune. The third duet is the best of the three by far- Jonathan Pierce sounds really good on this one. You don't have to be religious to enjoy the spirit of Christmas - I would like to say that the melodies, arrangements and performances on this CD are pleasant enough to hold their own playing in the background, even if you don't believe in what the lyrics are saying. I deliberated over how many stars to give "Christmas is Coming Home"- when weighed up against B.J.'s releases over the years, it probably deserves four stars, but when compared to all the music that's out there, it maybe deserves two. So I settled for three. I just wish B.J's mainstream albums from the 80's, 90's and the new millennium sounded this good.

                While I have always admired BJ's voice I
                only have one other Cd of his. But if
                you are a Christmas collecter this is a
                very nice one to add to it. Actually,
                it's better than most that are out there.
                Everything is very listenable and there
                are some standouts. His version of Grown
                Up Christmas is probably my favorite of all
                that are out. Let There Be Peace on Earth
                is lovely. And Tennessee Christmas with
                Michael McDonald is my favorite. What a
                conbination of two great voices!

                I hadn't heard BJ Thomas in years, but was a huge fan when I was younger. He still sounds as great as ever. Hearing his voice brought back a million memories. The songs are wonderful. It is the best Christmas CD I have bought in a long time.

                If you like Amy Grant,Andy Williams,Johnny Mathis, and Christian Christmas songs and also seeking refreshing new Christmas rhythms to new and old Christmas songs,then BJ Thomas is a must. I have purchased over 60 Christmas CDs and this ranks in my top 5.
