it's so amazingly brilliant/pretty.
even my acquaintances who don't like shoegazey stuff like
this. "something goes wrong" is one of the most
appallingly good and simple songs i have ever heard.
the stars of this band were the drummer jim goodall
(a monster!) and of course braddy the brat (brilliant,
knows it). i used to write them off as mbv rips--then i got this
...and went back to the equally enticing "shot forth self living"
"the buried life" title cribbed from a Matthew Arnold poem, by the by. the shot forth from Blake, i think?! i think goodall dreamed that up cause my friend said he reads Joyce and stuff. a drummer-reader? amazing. i loves the meds!!!

5 out of 5 stars elegant noise!.......2004-07-17

This has been one of my favorite albums for nearly a decade. Everything about it is just beautiful--from the feedback-drenched guitars to Beth's airy vocals this album is a shoegaze/noisepop masterpiece. Recommended for fans of My Bloody Valentine and Slap Happy Humphrey.

5 out of 5 stars an overdosage of innovation.......2000-09-06

This is their best work. You will never hear another band use a guitar in this manner. Brad Laner likes to crank the treble all the way up and leave the vocals as the sole source of midrange. The noisy guitar sounds in the backround are kept together by Beth and Brad's harmonies. They have the knack for making you wonder which one is really the melody. In all this album will give you a sense of flight. They take a different approach to giving the same feel that U2 instills... not that they sound at all alike. "The Pink" and "Never Click" are my personal favorites, although the haromony parts really stand out on "When Something Goes Wrong". This is a perfect example of how noise can be pleasant when it is used correctly... it is impossible to turn this up loud enough!

5 out of 5 stars Uncle Dave searches for the perfect woman.......2004-05-04

I heard the Waco Brothers a few years ago on college radio in RI and got some of their CDs from the Bloodshot site and really liked them BUT this record blows my freakin' lid off. They've teamed up with Uncle Dave, some dude they used to hang out with in DC back in the day and he's come up with all these sensitive wordy country ballads and neanderthal rock anthems about his mid-life crisis. Hilarious stuff. He dreams up a fantasy woman for his future Uncle Dave wife and by the end of the album realizes she has to be killed before he can be free or happy or both. But it's OK 'cos she's not real, I geuss. The Wacos never sounded better and the rocking never stops. Uncle Dave has one of those weird non-singer story-teller voices that creeps up on you and gets in your skull! Perfect listening for unemployable single drunks staring down the barrel at 50... Where Does Love Go When It's Gone could be a hit for the Mavericks or Dwight.

3 out of 5 stars pleasant surprize.......2005-06-30

Id love to rate this one higher...but the songs dont always measure up. the band is not bad, not great, just above average so to speak...different singers on songs makes for a lack of continuity to my mind...I like several songs like colt 45, shade the light, dark of the moon and cry of love...its just that there is so much stuff available today that often decent music gets lost in the shuffle to the top...the musicianship is adequate {Im reluctant to say average or fair) just not memorable enough to make my top 20...that said Id still recommend this disc because it has its moments and thats enough to make it listenable...kind of a wilco/uncle tupelo sound with a female singer...its worth a shot
