Aside from the folks who would otherwise waste an opportunity to discuss the worthiness of this album, I fully endorse it as an example of a beautiful combination of excellent playing and superb composing. A good arranger finds the perfect balance between keeping honest to the original music and exploring/exploiting the inherent qualities within it through different means. That's precisely what occurs with this album. You're hard pressed to find better arrangements than the Takemitsu. Leo Brower shows a deft touch for string writing in his arrangements and again his writing for the guitar is spot on. The final two arrangements by Mr. Lubbock are interesting, yet straying further from their original inspiration than the other arrangements, still manage to capture that lovely balance.

There aren't enough accolades to give Maestro Barrueco whose precision and musicianship are nearly unmatched (still a close second to Pepe Romero in my book). An excellent and interesting purchase for guitar, strings, and Beatles lovers alike.

Um... for the record: All the Beatle songs other than those composed by George Harrison or Ringo Starr were credited to "Lennon-McCartney" or "John Lennon and Paul McCartney" by prior agreement of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, whether they actually collaborated (as they did in many cases) or one of them worked by himself.

John Lennon wrote Ticket To Ride, Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, A Hard Day's Night, and You've Got To Hide Your Love Away.

Paul McCartney wrote Yesterday, Here, There, And Everywhere, Fool On The Hill, Penny Lane, Hey Jude, and The Long And Winding Road.

John Lennon and Paul McCartney collaborated on Eleanor Rigby, She's Leaving Home, and Michelle.

Becky Archibald's "The Long Ride Home" is a fascinating collection of musical "journeys" in a broad range of styles and approaches from `40's jazz to boogie to new age with an edge. This is not music to snooze to, as the styles vary a lot, but it is music that invites your full attention and participation to savor the innuendoes and subtleties of Archibald's piano playing. Not many composers include humor in their music, and it's fun to find two songs in this collection that invite chuckles or at least smiles. "Sumthin' Funky" is a quickie piece that explores dissonance with high energy and a catchy beat. "Daddy's Kind of Rock" is even more fun. Taking inspiration from her father's record collection, Archibald throws in splashes of Henry Mancini, James Bond, and other recognizable themes and ties them together with an infectious walking bass line. I really enjoy this piece! "40's Love Song" is a slinky bit of nostalgia that would be comfortable in any piano bar. It's not a cheap imitation, though - this piece is full of poignancy and emotion. "Haunted" gracefully tells the story of ridding her piano of annoying noises by following inner instructions to avoid playing specific notes on the piano. The tone of the piece goes from mysterious to flowing and back to mysterious. "Sunrise" takes on a more "new age" feel - more quiet and abstract than some of the other pieces. "Strength Within" continues in this style, but is bolder, as the title suggests, contrasting strength with gentleness. This is definitely one of my favorites! "The Secret" is almost ambient with its atmospheric openness. The title track is a semi-bluesy ballad that closes a very impressive and expressive listening experience. I highly recommend "The Long Ride Home" to those who are looking for more than background music.

    Oh my my! I'm so glad I found this guy. I discovered the man on crimethinc.com, where I downloaded his MP3s and was hooked. Had to have the whole album which I promptly purchased cheaply at the same site. (You might also check out the man's own website at rappincowboy.com.) 'Been giving them to friends and family ever since.

    Like Woody Guthrie, Sandman offers left-wing sentiments without preaching. He's a voice of the people, with an anarchist bent. "Ol' King Kong" is bound to upset flag-wavers and jingoists everywhere. But Sandman's not aiming for their dollars anyhow--he's a wandering bard giving us his poetic take on postmodern America.

    But Sandman's also just nice to listen to. He's got a lovely, downhome voice and plays a smooth guitar. Sick of commercialized alt.country? A tad weary of 50 year old folk music? Sandman is your muse for the 21st century.

    The Sandman is very simply, an island of musical originality in an industry of over-produced, studio-manufactured trite. A lyrical genius, his unique blend of folk, rap & country is a refreshing change to the stagnant waters of country/western music, and manages to magically combine 2 genres which have been at war for years.

    This album focuses specifically on his folk talents, and seems to pay homage to the classic country music of the past (as opposed to the pop-stylings of today). No folk, or country collection is complete without this diamond in the rough.

              Album Description

              The 70-minute score for the Western, 'The Long Ride Home,' was a delight to compose. In addition to writing Western themes, I needed to write a variety of other music to complement the drama of this Romantic/Mystery/Adventure. The vast array of emotions in the story allowed me to establish seven recurring themes that interweave throughout the film. The 'Main Title' begins with Jack Fowler's theme in a minor mode that sweeps into the Pa Lucas funeral theme. Jack's theme comes back throughout the score both in minor and romantic major keys ('Jack & Laura- House') usually with the English Horn or the Illean Pipes, Irish bagpipes, which are native to Laura's homeland ('Flashbacks'). Laura and Hank's theme, characterized by the duet between the flute and oboe heard in the 'Proposals' in a major key, comes back in a minor key as she becomes emotionally confused, caught in a love triangle between Jack and Hank ('Hank & Laura'). Daniel, Laura's son, usually voiced by the clarinet, has both the 'Homestead theme' (fourths/fifths) and his playful childlike theme ('Garden/Jack'). Of all the themes in the soundtrack, the revenge theme of Pa Lucas incorporates the most characteristics of Western music, a sound achieved by the brass playing fourths/fifths in motives throughout the score as well as in the 'Riding' Sequences. And finally, the theme that adds the mystery to the adventure is the fifths/tri-tone theme of Abel Hart that adds the suspense throughout the second half of the film as the plot unravels.
