About the Artist
Originally conceived as a "routine experiment", now Hickory Project has become recognized as a revolutionary musical project involving the collaboration of five outstanding musicians. Together they feature hard-driving traditional bluegrass and dazzling new acoustic music that achieves their mission to "link the old and new in acoustic music". Referred to as "the cross between Nickel Creek and the New Grass Revival", Hickory Project has burst into the scene performing to large audiences across the globe. In the 3 years of being together, the group has managed three international tours (Australia twice and Ireland), as well as performing across the US with the expert licks of 1999 National Mandolin Champion Anthony Hannigan and four-time Florida Fiddle Champion Sue Cunningham, and banjo phenom David Cavage providing the foundation for an outstanding performance.

Product Description
A diverse, eclectic blend of hard-driving, innovative, and high-energy original and contemporary bluegrass music bursts from this CD - nearly an hour's worth of appealing arrangements, sizzling licks, and evocative vocals. Hickory Project offers 14 new acoustic-flavored originals with a twist of sassy bluegrass on this 18-cut CD. The CD's title track, "Polaris" begins with a classical string quartet before serving up a tasty delight of hot Gypsy-like licks. Bluegrass sensibilities are aptly portrayed in "Blues Of Your Love', and "Ellie May". Virtuostic fiddling shines on "Waltz Of The Morning", and the band's vocal prowess is underscored in the ballads of Catie Curtis's "Troubled Mind", and John Starling's "He Rode All The Way To Texas". As an added bonus, Polaris contains a short video from "behind-the-scenes" at their recording session - for fans to get to know the players a little better. High-flying uptempo instrumentals as well as strong vocal ballads! …a CD that begs for listening time and time again - you won't take it out of your player!

Polaris,Hickory Project,Hickory Productions, LLC,A blend of bluegrass, newgrass, folk and jazz - something for everyone. Great instrumentals and vocals.

5 out of 5 stars Songs to get stuck in your head for days..........2006-03-02

Any true fan of The Adventures of Pete and Pete knows how much the music of Polaris contributed to the excellence of the show. "She is Staggering" is indescribably beautiful and perfect, one of my favorite songs of all time. Everyone who loves the show needs to have this CD, but even people who have never heard of Pete and Pete would enjoy it as well. It's simply very good music.

4 out of 5 stars A very good jangle pop album that falls very short of being classic, so most should really like it! - 4.5 stars.......2006-01-12

Polaris, aka the guys who did the music for the hit Nickelodeon show Pete & Pete, are a really good band with an unfortunately unappealing singer (in some of the songs). He's not bad, but I can certainly see some people not liking him. However, Polaris makes up for this with some very high quality songs (see "Waiting For October" and "Everywhere", especially), and as a whole I'd say the pros far outweigh the cons. Musically it's very reminiscent of The Ocean Blue or R.E.M., as there's not much innovation here. You probably won't care about that in the end, though. The production is also pretty well done, though nothing to write home about. The lyrics are pretty interesting, though nothing really deep - you'll probably like listening to them closely I think. Every song here is good, but what pushes it up to a "5" are the songs "Waiting For October" and "Everything" which are just awesomely nostalgiac 90's pop rock songs. It's barely not a classic, so if you like your pop rock in the vein of R.E.M. or The Ocean Blue, then chances are you'll love Polaris! Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars As Good As Rock Gets.......1999-06-21

Rock doesn't get any better than this. The title track should have been the campaign theme song for Clinton-Gore in 1992 -- remember the economy was bad then. Not only does it rock, but its lyrics are intelligent and pithy. "Seeds of a Revolution" is another great track with its beautiful, but lively melody, and fine lyrics. It's great to see that this CD is available again. Now if Columbia Records would only reissue Nile's 1990s masterpiece, "Places I Have Never Been," CK 4434)you'd get to hear Nile at his most creative and entertaining.

With their third album, this blues-rock outfit from the Mississippi hills further transcends their mimicry of the Allman Brothers and home-turf heroes Junior Kimbrough, R.L. Burnside, and Fred McDowell to forge a distinct sound. Sure, the guitars ring even more like the Allmans' with the addition of Burnside's son Duwayne, who harmonizes his six-string with Luther Dickinson's on plenty of tunes. But improved vocal performances and pop-savvy arrangements make numbers like "Eyes," "Kids These Daze," "One to Grow On," and the hip-hop-informed "Be So Glad" ready for rock radio. Happily, the foursome haven't sidestepped their deep blues roots. The late cane fife master Othar Turner appears on "Be So Glad," and they cover Kimbrough's "Meet Me in the City" with all of its original swing and swagger, plus the warm, joyful tone of Dickinson's expert slide playing. "The One Thing," with its roiling acoustic guitar intro and steel-guitar-style string-bending, unfurls like an epic. It evolves from country blues to country rock and then dives into a gently exploratory jazz-blues instrumental passage before returning to its flat-four beat. If this CD gets the attention its well-written songs and fine playing deserve, the Allstars' smart and solid fusion may well become the foundation for a new school of Southern rock. --Ted Drozdowski

Weak, trite lyrics and limited jams. I want to get rid of this CD, but I can't see giving to a real friend. Sorry guys...

1 out of 5 stars A waste of good money!.......2005-08-19

Well, one listen to this dirg and it's for sale!, what is this?, corporate rock?, did they owe an album and just dumped out what was in the can?, strings?????, where is the grit?, the power?, dumb songs!!!, please, give us some more power blues rock! Well, now if I had to judge, Reckless Kelly is the best band in the USA right now!

5 out of 5 stars criticism is biased.......2005-06-13

to say that this album isn't any good just because it is different from shake hands with shorty or 51 phantom is wrong. This is a great album with great songs and great production done by a great band.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction To The NMAS.......2004-11-23

Polaris is my first introduction to the North Mississippi Allstars. They remind me a lot of The Band. Their music has a nice country soulful feel to it. The opening track EYES is great. I can also recommend HARD TO PLEASE and the title track POLARIS. A talented and good band. I look forward to more from these guys.

4 out of 5 stars Many good individual tracks, lack of flow.......2004-08-19

First, I have to agree with many other reviewers that this band's main strength is their live performances. For your money, you won't see a better show. This CD highlights NMA's ability to cut across several genres. The southern blues rock is there and ever improving. Their writing steadily gets better. Several tracks also have a Brit pop flare featuring the vocalist from Oasis. This is definitely their most experimental album and gets better with each listen. However, vocalist changes and complete genre shifting from track to track lends no flow to the album. That said, one can expect this album to be their breakthrough to a broader audience.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A good album.......2007-03-28

I bought this album, cuz it had a really great lineup in this album. Nagash(ex-Dimmu Borgir), Astennu(ex-Dimmu Borgir), Sverd(Arcturus), Hellhammer(Mayhem, Arcturus, and current Dimmu Borgir)and Sarah Jezibel Deva(Cradle of Filth, Angtoria). I love the album from the start. Sadly Nagash fired all the members and changed them for new ones.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential.......2007-02-07

Before I discovered this album, I could never have imagined the concept of melodic, atmospheric black metal--or that any band could pull off something like it. Since then, Nexus Polaris has opened my eyes. I've never heard metal like this before, and I probably never will again. The sound is so original, and yet so cohesive, that it could only have been created by some of the best musicians on the extreme metal scene--and, indeed it was.

The fiendish, snarling vocals of Nagash (now known as Lex Icon, formerly of Dimmu Borgir, currently in The Kovenant and Crowhead), two outstanding guitarists in Astennu (Dimmu Borgir and Carpe Tenebrum) and Blackheart, keyboardist Sverd (Arcturus), the remarkable Hellhammer (Mayhem) on drums, and finally the backing female vocals of Sarah Jezebel Deva (Cradle of Filth) all come together on this album, producing a sound that is at once lethal, beautiful, and mesmerizing. Everything about Nexus Polaris falls perfectly into place--not just the musicianship, but the lyrics, CD artwork, and production as well. Nuclear Blast (the record label) has been known for excellent quality, but even for them, this is something special.

Although I'd never heard of this album until recently, Wikipedia states that "Nexus Polaris was released in 1998 and was hugely successful (due to Nuclear Blast's promotion), allowed Covenant to do a two-week tour, and was on national Norwegian television for six days. This was also a sign of Covenant moving from black metal to cyber metal and space metal. Soon Covenant found themselves nominated for a Norwegian Grammy. They attended and won for Best Hard Rock band (the first ever in history)."

I have to say they deserved the success. Nexus Polaris was, and still is, a singular achievement. It's something that every extreme metal fan should experience.

5 out of 5 stars Sure to be a timeless metal classic........2005-10-21

I am not typically a black metal fan, but, then again, Nexus Polaris is not your typical black metal album. Therefore, black metal purists beware! While there are more straightforward black metal tracks on this album, most tracks contain stunning melodies, and some could even be described as bordering on the extremely heavy power metal line.

One undeniably black component of this album is the vocals. Operatic female vocals from Cradle of Filth's Sarah perfectly complement the deep woods, under the bridge troll-witch growl of Lex Icon. I usually cannot stand this style of growling, but it fits so perfectly on this album. In fact, it is precisely this type of congruency which makes this album one of the most treasured in my collection. When Lex and Sarah exclaim, "But still the sun refused to move!" during my favorite track, "Bringer of the Sixth Sun", absolute chills run down my spine as the vocal delivery and lyrical content work with the instrumentation to create a truly grandiose, larger than life, epic sound. At times, Nexus Polaris sounds like THE definitive dark opera.

This neo-classically melodic sound is precisely what will have these songs so lodged in your head that you will find yourself humming the riffs and singing the lyrics even when you are not listening to the album; not a common effect of black metal.

This memorable quality is created by absolutely stellar musicianship, from the absolutely stellar Hellhammer on drums, Sverd on keyboards, and dual guitar attack of Blackheart and Astennu. At times, these axemen truly recall memories of such classic double attacks as Hanneman and King, and Smith and Murray. With these galloping riffs, Sverd offers up plenty of keyboard runs which echo the piano stylings of history's most well-known composers. At other times, he simply provides the eerie vampiric atmospherics most commonly associated with black metal. Regardless, one of the strongest selling points of this album in my opinion is how prominently the keys are featured. While they never suffocate the more traditional metal drums and guitars, they are always audible, and this album would not be nearly as good without them.

Now, do we even need to discuss Hellhammer given that we all know that everything he touches turns to gold? Of course we do. This is my favorite album featuring Hellhammer. Considering the heavy black metal leanings, relentless double-bass blasts are present, and we all know nobody plays double-bass like Hellhammer. What I like about his performance on this album is the subtle precision and style he attacks the rest of his kit with. After your first epiphany with this album, go back and listen to it again, trying hard just to listen to the drums. I think Hellhammer may perhaps be underrated in that he so meticulously, successfully, and effortlessly adds such small touches which have dramatic effects on the music.

Before ending this review, I must come back to what makes this album so cherished in the metal community: the uncanny way in which this band pulled together all the ingredients in the most perfect way. On tracks like "Nexus Polaris" the listener is immediately sucked into a black hole of galloping guitars and drums, punctuated by synthesizer bell effects and polarized clean vocals and growls. The effect may be desrcibed as a Dimmu Borgir/Cradle of Filth dramatization with the crediblity and earnestness of Sons of Northern Darkness Immortal.

Easily the most remarkable aspect of this album is that this originality and infectious style is present on every single track. I can honestly say that this is one of the few albums in my large collection that is placed in the CD player and played the entire way through. There are no weak moments on this album. While Kovenant did not impress me with any of their other albums, I will fight to the death their importance in the progression of extreme metal because Nexus Polaris represents a sound which, upon its release, had never been heard before. And more importantly for the solidification of this album's place in the annals of metal, Nexus Polaris also represents a sound which will never be replicated in the future either.

5 out of 5 stars Reinforcing my new respect and enjoyment of black metal.......2005-05-05

What can I say, this album is fantastic. The amazing guitar work, the way the synth/piano compliments the music, Hellhammer's drumwork is OUTSTANDING and the operatic vocals...wow, this record is a masterpiece, I recommend this to any fan of any kind of metal, because it's cohesive enough to work as a gateway and strong enough to leave a legendary mark in the world of black metal.

5 out of 5 stars Black Metal Masterpiece.......2005-02-19

The Covenant's Nexus Polaris is a layered and complex album with superb production that has set the standard for years to come. From Lex Icon's searing vocals to the majesty of Steinar Sverd Johnsen's beautiful keyboards to the blistering drum mastery from Hellhammer, this album is quite possibly one of my favorites ever. The bands sound is so cohesive on this album that every song sounds like a new masterpiece, never treading over the same path all the while pushing a new threshold in every aspect. Lex's vocals shine on every song while Sverd's keyboards enhance every track, especially his piano work on Bizzare Cosmic Industries which would later set the mold for his piano work on Star-Crossed from the album The Sham Mirrors by Arcturus. The layered guitars of Astennu and Blackheart mesh together perfectly and create a dark atmosphere that has become The Covenant's signature sound on this album. Topping it all of is Sarah Jezebel Deva's soaring vocals floating in and out of the album, but never making it too effeminate even for the most hardcore black metal fan. In fact, I consider this one of her most amazing vocal performances from any band she has ever sang for.

Nexus Polaris will reshape and remold the way you perceive black metal in general, and will leave you wanting more. The only thing I still cannot grasp is that this album was released 8 years ago, definitely engraving their place in the history books for many, many years.

This is TD's best. There is plenty of creativity, excitement and imagery in this work. By far my favorite album from any artist. Check out google earth sometime while listening to this album! It's a sweet experience!

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THEIR BEST FOR SURE!.......2005-04-29

I HAVE BEEN A FAN SINCE RICOCHET (1975), AND THIS IS A VERY PLEASANT SUPRISE. WITHOUT A SHADOW OF A DOUBT THIS ALBUM IS NOTHING LESS THAN AWESOME! THIS IS IN MY TOP FIVE FAVORITE TD ALBUMS. IF IT'S POSSIBLE TO WEAR OUT A CD, I WILL FIND OUT WITH THIS ONE. I LISTEN TO THIS THE MOST WHEN I AM OUT CRUISING AROUND IN THE CAR OR WHEN ON THE COMPUTER FOR AN HOUR OR TWO. I HAVE YET TO LISTEN TO IT WITH HEADPHONES OR CRANKING IT UP ON THE HOME STERIO. I IMAGINE ANY OF THOSE WAYS WOULD MAKE THE HAIR ON YOUR HEAD STAND STAIGHT UP. JUST BUY IT!

5 out of 5 stars This Album is awesome.......2004-03-11

This album very strongly reminds me of Christopher Franke's work in Babylon 5. It's awesome music to study to, and definitely needs a few run throughs to get the feel of it. I wasn't so impressed the first time I heard it, but it's really grown on me. Essential background studying music!

    5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2003-11-03

Back in April 2003, I wrote that "Quinoa" was my favorite TD disc, that is, until I purchased "Mars Polaris". Incidentally, this one takes its rightful place amongst my top 5 favorites, in the company of "Oasis", "Architecture in Motion", "Quinoa", and "The Great Wall of China". Of course, "Mota Atma", "Hyperborea", and "Canyon Dreams" also deserve honorable mention. Conceptually, this disc completely encompasses all that they set out to do, i.e., capture the various moods one might associate with being part of the NASA Mars Polaris mission, from start to finish. At 11 years old, I stayed up all night and watched Neil Armstrong's first moonwalk, and have keenly followed the NASA space program all along.

It's hard to do a track review of standouts, because I like every one of them. Perhaps "Mars Mission Counter" is a bit less enjoyable, but the repetition is supposed to represent a mission COUNTER after all. The two openers, "Comet's Figure Head", and the "Rim of Schiaparelli" are incredibly good compositions, that draw you into the mood and intent of the CD with emotion, intensity, depth, and polish. On TD's website, they have a poll going to determine the best way to listen to TD. I prefer a powerful home stereo system to headphones, simply because headphones can't reproduce that subsonic stuff that literally moves the room. As on "Oasis" and "Architecture", there's lots of low-level stuff here that enhances the feel of the music, and has to be felt as well as heard.

Tracks 3 through 6 are all equally good, embodying their respective themes with imagination and skill. TD puts together multiple but simple layers better than anyone I can think of (excepting Camille Saint-Saens 5th symphony, 4th movement). This allows one to go back again and again, and always hear something subtle yet fresh which is integral to the composition.

Then we have "Astrophobia". I had this on in my office the other day, and the lady across the hall said it sounded like a soundtrack for a panic attack! Great review!!! The opening minute or two draw you into the phobic sensation David Bowie described in "Space Oddity" (here am I, sitting in a tin can). There seems to be some sense of duty and confidence building throughout the piece, but as it closes, the gripping inner fear is still there in its immobilizing influence.

"Tharsis Maneuver" has a majestic/mechanical feel similar to the use of "The Blue Danube" score used in "2001: A Space Odyssey", when the shuttle was docking with the earth orbiting space station. It's not as elegant, but just as effective. At places, you can count 12 or 14 melodies and soundscapes going on simultaneously - this is very good composition!

"Dies Martis" recalls some of the tones from TD's "Inferno", again with the layered washes of piano and synthesizer moving slowly around each other. I particularly enjoy the mood changes as they continually switch from major to minor keys with almost imperceptible seamlessness. This track embraces you - really - and draws a majestic finale to a 71 minutes of music which is STILL too short, because it's just too good to come to an end.

    3 out of 5 stars A better later album.......2002-06-18

I'm actually a huge fan of T.D.'s '70's and 80's material and never really got into anything beyond "Live Miles"- but I have heard all their albums. This album attracted me because the cover reminded me of their earlier album Zeit which was a heavy cosmic exploration and I was curious to see if they could pull it out again today. Nope. However I wasn't totally disappointed the music here is very much like a soundtrack to a detective mystery film and moves along quite well. The opening track is the best as the middle two or three tracks are very tedious and some what bland. If you were hoping for floating dreamy space music it ain't here it's all strong industrial beat driven stuff. Over all its a pretty good album- though, just once, I wish they had turned off that damn drum machine and floated in deep outer space for awhile. The music just stays in "Gotta rush" mode all the way through. What happened to stopping and floating in mysterious space- where's the damn fire!?

What do you get when a four-time Florida fiddle champ (Sue Cunningham) and the 1999 national mandolin champ (Anthony Hannigan) team up with banjo wizard David Cavage, experienced guitarist/lead vocalist Danny Shipe, and solid bassist Steve Belcher? You get the revolutionary and exciting Hickory Project, which offers dazzling new acoustic music flavored with a twist of sassy bluegrass.

"Polaris" is the fourth album offering from this Pennsylvania-based group that showcased for the IBMA in 2001. This is an 18-track CD with nearly an hour's worth of appealing arrangements, sizzling licks and evocative vocals. Fourteen of the cuts are originals that clearly indicate the band's members draw inspiration from jazz to classical, bluegrass to folk. This quintet is equally comfortable with high-flying (yet fully controlled) uptempo pieces like their opener, "Icy Roads" and "Round Top" to ballads like John Starling's "He Rode All The Way to Texas" or Catie Curtis' "Troubled Mind". Their bluegrass sensibilities are best portrayed in Hannigan's "Blues Of Your Love" and "Ellie May." Cunningham's virtuostic fiddling shines on her tune entitled "Waltz Of The Morning." The band's title cut and closer, "Polaris" begins with a classical string quartet before serving up a tasty delight of hot Gypsy-like licks. As an added bonus, this CD also includes a short video from behind-the-scenes at their recording session to get to know the players a little better.

The Hickory Project is on the forefront of the contemporary bluegrass movement. They tour nationally and internationally and are poised to make an even bigger name for themselves. This is exciting, adventurous stuff! You'll be hearing a lot more about The Hickory Project. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

infamous l.a. band that packed the local clubs back in the days. unfortunatly the bands debut and only cd came out in a bad age for rn'r! this cd is a great document from that era, an great party cd that every lover of glam rock should own!

5 out of 5 stars This album is a classic........2005-07-21

Bluesy, balls to the wall raunchy glam rock. This CD has 10 rocking tracks that are all catchy, and if this would have been released in the late 80's this group would've blown the f up. Bad timing kept this band from reaching it's full potential, but if you like hard rock I can guarantee that you will be extremely pleased with this group. Every song is as good as the last, and they also put on a great show (I saw them in 92). This is a hard to find cd but if you have the chance to get it, take it.
