5 out of 5 stars Some of the best songs I've ever heard!.......2001-07-18

These guys are some of the nicest people you would ever want to meet and they KNOW country music! 'You Have the Right to Remain Silent' is a gem of a song. I have other personal favorites from this album and I sing along regularly! Steve Murray has been singing since high school and has a rich and unique voice. He sings sad songs, up-beat songs, and classics equally well. You should hear him do 'Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay'!! I could be partial since I know him well and since I recently married his cousin and now we're related, but if you love real songs that exemplify great country music, this album is for you!

4 out of 5 stars We need more of these guys!.......2000-06-28

Whilst some of the songs on this CD aren't to my personal liking (It's up to you) the others are so fantastic that they make up for any shortfalls. You Have The Right to Remain silent is a beauty, but best of all is No 7, Who are You? Worth a listen too for sure!, and i'll be first in line for the next CD.

5 out of 5 stars What a great album.......2000-05-29

These guys may be the most under-rated group in country music. This album, their first, has several of the best songs I've ever heard, delivered in a way you can't forget. The title cut, and the unforgettable ballad, "I'm A Stranger Here Myself" are what the genre is all about. A classic blend of artists and material.

5 out of 5 stars You Have The Right To Remain Silent.......2000-01-24

Great songs that touch true life experiences that all can relate to. This group of artists have all the potential needed with their soul touching lyrics and their cowboy manners. Live performances will not soon be forgotten..these artists are down to earth and a pleasure to watch, as well as listen to....hoping for more releases in the near future.

3 out of 5 stars great song.......1999-08-12

I'm a country music lover and although I dont care for the cd as a whole The Title cut is one of the most emotional grabbing songs I've ever heard

After a decade and a half of recording everything from '60s pop covers culled from the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, country music, and pensive singer-songwriters, Marianne Faithfull signed with Island Records as a reinvented new-wave punk queen. With sharpened edge at the ready, she cut 1978's Broken English, a harrowing purge of sexual jealousy and guilt, six cuts from which are featured here. Her voice, ravaged from years of excess, cracks with wasted beauty and lent tarnished experience to her tales of struggle and hopeless nostalgia. After several albums of modern pop (a healthy selection from all are included in this essential anthology), Faithfull hooked up with producer Hal Willner to record 1987's Strange Weather, adopting a new role as an ageless, bluesy chanteuse. A Perfect Stranger follows through her latest collaboration with Angelo Badalamenti (1995's A Secret Life) and features six previously unreleased tracks, including a cover of John Lennon's "Isolation" and "A Waste of Time," a song she cowrote with Steve Winwood. --Rob O'Connor

4 out of 5 stars You gotta have Faithfull........2006-08-23

A while back I got a collection of hers that was good, but only 11 tracks and obviously too short. Well no problem here, as this is three times the collection in every way. I've liked Marianne Faithfull since I first heard her, and similar to Leonard Cohen, there's no mistaking who you're listening to. This 2-disc set actually has more than I need, but no complaints. Disc one starts with the majority of her huge "Broken English" album, rightly so. Then we get gems like "Intrigue", "For Beauty's Sake", "Truth Bitter Truth", and her take on "Sister Morphine". I'll admit more of my favorites are on the first disc, but disc two is solid also. "Strange Weather", "As Tears Go By", "Isolation", and many more make disc two a must, though things get more mellow toward the end. This of course is just songs from her Island years, but what great years. Essential no matter if you know her music well, or if you're a "perfect stranger" to it. Nice booklet too.

5 out of 5 stars I Alway Take It With Me.......2006-06-10

This is a perfect introduction to Marianne Faithfull if you've been too timid to invest in all of her CDs. For me, it's the portable Faithfull. I always take it with me. Marianne makes rainy day music - sometimes bleak, sometimes furious, sometimes bitter, sometimes wistful. Always haunting. I never really liked her early crystal soprano, but when she can roaring back with "Broken English" (one of the most perfect collection of songs on record) I was hooked for the duration. Standouts here are many, but I love "Trouble In Mind," "Times Square," "Ghost Dance" the most. A worthy investment.

5 out of 5 stars she was a stone a rollin' .......2006-02-10

i was first introduce too marianne faithfull by the dvd of the rollin' stones rock and roll circus i fell in love with her model beauty and unique voice that sent me into a coma or maybe i just fancied her..well anyway i watched her performance
now after a year i've finally decided to venture into the world
of the fuelled rock beauty queen of marianne faithfull that's to say i'm not a huge femal vocalist in the rock music[i'm not sexost] i just think most women's voice come off weak when they're back by guitars bass and drums pelting away
but here's it's different
she's has all the accomdations to fit perfectly up with
mercury marriott and other rock men gods
another female vocalist i love is joni mitchell the beautiful
angelic voice..that's on the same level with faithfull for beauty
on this album i've noticed a few john lennon covers
"workin' class hero" on par with the orginal
and a previously un-released on cd "isolation"
a different slant to the lennon classics EXCELLENT
on this double disc anthology
you get most of the tracks from "broken english" which i was gonna buy but decided to but this instead as it had more tracks and was only a few pounds dearer
the songs from "broken english" are superb espically "guilt"
what a powerful voice

marianne faithfull perfect stranger the island anthology

4 out of 5 stars Rock legend and torch singer.......2004-10-22

This compilation features Marianne Faithfull mark 2, concentrating on her work from the groundbreaking album Broken English to the mid 90s A Secret Life, plus some previously unreleased material.

Disc One is by far the best as it draws on the brilliant trilogy of Broken English, Dangerous Acquaintances and A Child's Adventure. All her rock-pop classics are here, from the controversial Why D'ya Do It, the moving Ballad Of Lucy Jordan and the catchy Intrigue, to The Blue Millionaire. The song Tenderness from Dangerous Acquaintances is a regrettable omission.

Disc Two contains a lot of her bluesy and art-song material, like Boulevard Of Broken Dreams, plus previously unavailable numbers like her exquisite interpretation of Gloomy Sunday. My other favourites here are Ghost Dance, the later version of As Tears Go By and Times Square, which really belongs on Disc One with the rest of the tracks from A Child's Adventure. The last four tracks come from the uninspiring album A Secret Life. A better choice would have been the sorrowful song Losing.

Perfect Stranger does an excellent job of displaying the two sides of the later Faithfull - the rock legend and the torch singer. As such it deserves 5 stars. But to be frank, only Disc One deserves that. It's a matter of taste, but I can only give Disc 2 three stars. Overall, the collection is an impressive showcase of the second part of her career.

5 out of 5 stars From riches to skid row - well almost.......2004-05-03

Marianne was born into a wealthy family and didn't need a musical career. Nevertheless, she achieved a measure of success as a pop singer in the sixties, having six UK hits including four that made the top ten. During that time, she recorded four albums - two of pop music and two of folk music - but she also went from being a happy, smiley person (see the cover of Come my way, her first folk album) to an utterly unhappy person dependent on drugs. Her sixties music can be found elsewhere. This compilation focuses on her very different music from 1979 to 1995.

For most of the seventies, Marianne did not record any music such was the depth of her misery. When she started recording again, her voice was different, affected dramatically by all the drugs. She actually started again in 1977 with an album of country songs, mostly covers and three of them originally by Crystal Gayle, but it was her 1979 album, Broken English, that made the world take notice and it is then that this anthology commences.

The songs here are often melancholy, reflecting Marianne's experiences of life as a drug addict. She was past the worst but still affected by it. I find it particularly depressing because of the history. It is one thing to listen to somebody from a poor background singing about hardship - they were born into it and have made an effort to get out of it. Marianne went the other way, so her problems are, at least in part, self-inflicted. Yet there is no denying that her problems with drugs gave her music an edge.

This compilation is dominated by, but not limited to, tracks from her albums Broken English (6 tracks), Dangerous acquaintances (5 tracks), A child's adventure (3 tracks), Strange weather (6 tracks), Blazing away (4 tracks) and A secret life (4 tracks).

A good example of Marianne's style during this period is Ballad of Lucy Jordan. This song was written by Shel Silverstein and first recorded by Dr Hook, who recorded a lot of his songs including Sylvia's mother. Whereas Dr Hook recorded this song in a fairly light-hearted way (just as they had with Sylvia's mother), Marianne took Lucy Jordan's plight very seriously, bringing out the true meaning of the song.

If you want a direct contrast between her old and new music, there is a re-recording of As tears go by, the song that the Rolling Stones wrote especially for Marianne, though they also recorded their own version. The re-recording here is very different from her sixties UK hit version. Sister morphine is also a re-recording of a song she did in the sixties.

Many of the songs here are originals, several of which Marianne co-wrote, but there are some great covers apart from those already mentioned including Working man's hero, Isolation (both John Lennon), Ballad of the soldier's wife (Kurt Weill), Strange weather (Tom Waits) and a couple of oldies from the Great American Songbook, suitably updated (Boulevard of broken dreams, Yesterdays).

The original songs are very dramatic and could only have been sung by somebody disillusioned with so many things in life. If you think things are bad in your life, listening to Marianne will remind you that your life could be a lot worse.

The music here is artistically superior to her sixties music but is more difficult to listen to. The two parts of her career yielded completely different music, so liking one does not mean you'll like the other. My eclectic tastes in music enable me to appreciate both.

If you are new to Marianne's music from this period, this will give you in-depth coverage of it, though if you think a double-CD may be too much, I recommend you just go for one of the original albums from which this is compiled.

5 out of 5 stars Class.......2002-01-23

Excellent CD, after a few listens gets better and better. Perfect Stranger should be amongst the greats of modern country music.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2001-11-09

This is another CD I chose for one song and got surprised when I found out I liked most all of the songs on the CD. This is a good group.

4 out of 5 stars The most underated band of country music.......2001-08-16

This album is just as great as "You have the right to remain silent" was. I still do not understand why this wonderful band is never played on radios. I saw them on stage and I can tell they are great entertainers. So, I can't see any reason why it is so hard to find any news from such a talented band and their albums. The songs "The Hits" and "Running through my mind" are the best, but this whole album will please the fans of true country music. Don't miss it!

5 out of 5 stars The Hits ... a Miracle.......2001-08-13

After six LONG years, Perfect Stranger has finally released their sophomore album, The Hits. Lead singer, Steve Murray still has one of the best and most distinctive voices in country music today. From the lively Fire When Ready to the perfect wedding song Miracle, The Hits is well worth every penny. Don't miss one of the best CD's released in a long time.

4 out of 5 stars Good Comeback.......2001-06-28

This sophomore release from Perfect Stranger is a nice comeback. It's been a little while since the first album and I think this one is really good. The title track, "The Hits", is great. It pays tribute to some other songs that have made it big. Pick this one up. You won't be disappointed. It's got an awesome country flavor. I think Steve Murray has one of the best voices in country music.

4 out of 5 stars Good selection for hard core Zappa fans .......2007-04-22

The CD is a collection of pure classical music for the most part, with a few synthesizer tunes thown in for good measure. The classical stuff is what I would expect classical music to sound like if Zappa wrote it. Then he does his own synth stuff that sounds like Tron runs amok. Somehow, the two different styles blend together well and seem to fit in this presentation. The packaging is very detailed. The liner notes are presented in multiple languages besides English and all musicians are credited. I'm glad I bought it. But then again, I'm a Zappa nut. :)

3 out of 5 stars A Good Zappa Instrumental Album....part orchestra/part synclavier.......2006-04-08

While this is not FZ's greatest instrumental album of orchestral or synclavier pieces, it is still a very good sample of some of Zappa's entertaining pieces that proved he could be just as good a composer of serious music as he could with comedy rock.

Tracks 1, 2, 4 are performed by a Frecnh orchestra conducted by Pierre Boulez while tracks 3, 5, 6 and 7 are performed without any human musicians on the "synclavier" machine.

The best piece on the album is track 4 (Dupree's Paradise). This "Dupree's Paradise" is the definitive version, surpassing the 24 minute version found on YCDTOSA vol. 2 and even the faster, big-band version found on "make a jazz noise here."
In other words, a beautiful, moving and relaxing piece.

Track 1 (The Perfect Starnger) makes its premiere here and is very experimental in the Stravinsky/Varese sort of way that Zappa occasionally emulated. Not a bad piece but nothing special either.

"Naval aviation in art?" is also heard here. However, this version is inferior to the original (and shorter) version found on the "orchestral favorites" album.

While "the girl in the magnesium dress" and "love story" are mediocre synclavier pieces, "Outside now again" is perhaps Zappa's most relaxing, yet simultaneously suspenseful, synclavier piece. ***A perfect track to put on "repeat" while reading or doing chores.

"jonestown" is a synclavier piece that would be the perfect composition in a very scary horror movie.

All in all, a great listen.

5 out of 5 stars No bulls please.......2006-02-13

No bull..it. This classical music by Frank is superb. Zappa did it again. This just to begin. I'll add something more specific in the afternoon. But, really this is an incredible accomplishment. Music is the best.

5 out of 5 stars Great, but not as good as Yellow Shark.......2003-10-20

This album has songs by an orchestra and a few by Zappa on his Synclavier. Great album and well worth the time.

5 out of 5 stars Girl In the Magnesium Dress -- a classic.......2003-06-06

Okay,

This is a cd of half orchestration from an actual orchestra, and half orchestration from a synclavier... but the highlight for me is an orchestration from a synclavier called Girl in the magnesium dress. quite an accomplishment. I love it. worth the price of admission alone. NO disrespect to Boulez but his renditions of FZ work needs a lot of help.. the work is great, but as another reviewer noted, Boulez didn't do it justice. Boulez might not 'get it'

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as Zappa's own 'Chamber Works' but facinating.......2007-03-07

This is really BIG. Pierre Boulez is without a doubt the most important interpreter of modern music in the late 20th century. So for plucky Pierre to do interpretations of our Frank says a lot about Zappa's seriousness as a musician. This clearly better than Jon Luc Ponty's earlier renditions of Zappa's works on violin, but it is not as good or as interesting as Zappa's own performances, especially of his 'The Yellow Shark' album recorded in Germany shortly before his death. With all due respect to Boulez artistry, his interpretations seem to lack the raw edge of the original. But, the thought is certainly appreciated.

3 out of 5 stars very strange, yet oddly impressive.......2006-11-08

Yes, this is weird music. It's atonal, complicated, and difficult to follow. Yet Zappa's musical ideas and gestures carry such strength and force that you can't help but admire them (for as much as you'll have trouble understanding them). Boulez and his outstanding French new music ensemble, the Ensemble InterContemporain, offer readings of spirited enthusiasm and unfaltering skill... a necessity for these difficult scores.

The album won't be to the taste of very many, but if you're interested in Zappa or in aggressive Modernism, it's certainly compelling.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Stranger.......2002-11-15

as a longtime fan, I was delighted with the complexity of the lyrics, the quality of his voice and the arrangements. Some of his best music here, in a long productive career.

5 out of 5 stars A real treat to the ears.......1998-08-24

JCY has been a favorite for many people through the years. It's a shame to have such a great work of music such as Perfect Stranger and not get the support or air play it should of.

4 out of 5 stars A haunting departure from traditional JCY efforts........1998-07-08

JC Young moved from his roots with this heartstopping collection so ballads and almost blues pieces.

A shame this album did not receive any serious promotional support. This album will appeal to both the JCY fan and be attractive to new listeners.
