In 1965 the honky-tonk pioneer Ernest Tubb became the sixth artist inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. With more than 25 years of recording experience under his belt and legions of fans to his credit, the charismatic Texan had nothing left to prove. That fact didn't stop Tubb and his Troubadours from touring the United States incessantly, playing not concert halls but small clubs. This marvelous double-CD set captures such a night at Seattle's Spanish Castle and is an indispensable slice of country-music history. Boasting impeccable sound quality, it includes a host of Tubb's hits performed by a top-of-the-line band featuring lead guitarist Leon Rhodes and steel wizard Buddy Charlton, not to mention Jack Greene and Cal Smith, future stars in their own right. Tubb's rough-edged but relaxed and easygoing baritone was limited from day one and years of booze and cigarettes didn't help matters, but few were as expressive and genuine--check out "(A Memory) That's All You'll Ever Be to Me" for proof. His magnetic personality shines through whether he's singing his heart out, laughing through the lyrics, or chatting with the band and audience. Meanwhile, the Troubadours float from blistering hardcore tonk to jazz tunes like Duke Ellington's "C Jam Blues" with ease. --Marc Greilsamer

Product Description
This CD captures Ernest Tubb and his Texas Troubadours at their best "live". Ernest performs all his hits and his warm, entertaining stage manner, which made him such a beloved entertainer is captured in this recording. The sound quality of this CD, recorded in 1965 by Jan Kurtis Skugstad is unbelievable. If you could only have one Ernest Tubb recording this would be the one. Also features the Texas Troubadours with special performances by Jack Greene, Cal Smith and a drum solo by the producer. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Album Description

This stellar 20 bit remastered double CD release includes all of the songs performed by Wes Montgomery's quartet, at the Paris' Theatre des Champs Elysees on March 27, 1965. It is arguably the best live recording of Wes Montgomery and the sound quality is excellent. Accompanied by the outstanding pianist Harold Mabern, bassist Arthur Harper, drummer Jimmy Lovelace and special guest, tenor saxophone virtuoso Johnny Griffin, this release is a testimony to the magic of Wes Montgomery's guitar playing, and his ability to innovate and excel in a live performance setting. Definitive Records. 2003.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Live CD.......2005-11-10

I was skeptical at first. If the recording is so great, why hasn't it come out before now? But I bought the cd anyway and was pleasantly surprised. I don't know if it is better than "Live at the Half Note" or "Full House," but it is definitely on the same level as those two cd's. And if you consider that Wes' best playing seems to be what he does live, it is a must have for any jazz guitar fan.

5 out of 5 stars Didn't hear it, don't need to........2005-09-29

I'm a professional jazz guitar player and I have almost everything by Wes, as I should since he is the one and only toff player in jazz guitar. I don't have this one CD, but I don't even need to. I know that what Wes is doing here is astonishing, simple, real, honest and overwhelming, as is every single note he has ever played. The stars given by every one here shows I can't be wrong. As a study I have taken solos by Wes and the most impressive thing is not the technical complexities at all - Wes is rather simple - but how his mind must have worked, and this you can feel when playing along with him. His mind is always one or two bars ahead, so the "simple" becomes misteriously impossible and this is the trace of the genius; once you hear it you go "my god, this is so simple, how didn't I think of this before?" It's like Beethoven's 9th, so simple, so obvious and so beautiful. This man represents the spirit of jazz in the most loving way and this is why I arrogantly wrote this review of a CD I never heard.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Marvelous !!!.......2005-06-12

this is as good as it gets for Wes Montgomery's live playing- a very uptempo night of playing with lotsa chops... i don't like the actual recorded sound of the recording as much as "Smokin' at the Half Note"- seems like there is more treble in Wes' amp settings than i am used to or maybe it was just the settings of the tape recorder 0r P.A. board... still, this is a ferocious night of Wes' playing with more of a Bebop feel than Swing in the style- GRRREAT JAZZ !!! a wonder-full compliment to "Smokin' at the Half Note" which has a warmer, softer vibe in that club concert... if you love Wes- you gotta hear this recording !!!

5 out of 5 stars Essential for guitarists and Wes completists only........2005-03-02

Wes is admittedly more "aggressive" in his playing on this occasion, partly due to his band mates and the nature and length of the program. Unlike the grooving, always "in the pocket," rhythm section of "Smokin' at the Half Note" (Kelly, Chambers, Cobb), the Harold Mabern-led rhythm section gives the music a forward edge, or emotive quality, suggestive of Coltrane and McCoy. The result is often music based on tension and release rather than melodic inventiveness--leading to some purely "physical" playing and grandstanding on the parts of Mabern and tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin (the two ballads opening the second disk are my favorite moments of the concert).

The audio is acceptable--and thankfully the balance favors Wes' guitar, which sounds as "fat" and consistent as ever. But I suspect this recording won't wear as well with me and other non-guitarists as his meetings with Wynton Kelley, Milt Jackson, and Jimmy Smith, not to mention the classic Riverside studio albums. If there were more of Wes on record, I'd give this one 4 stars. Pick it up only if you have "Smokin'," "Full House," and "The Incredible Artistry."

5 out of 5 stars Wes turned it out.......2004-11-14

got to hear this whole set&was feeling it from start to end. Wes&His Band knocked it out.I was already diging His Live One Smoking at the Half Note but this One is even more tighter if you can beleive that.Wes with His Signature playing&Styling just moves you.strogn arrangements.some of His Albums back in the day didn't always Highlight him properly as this Set does so well.enjoy!!!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The one and only Fred Neil.......2005-07-06

The late Fred Neil wasn't exactly well known outside Greenwich Village. The closest he came to stardom (if any) was the Nilsson interpretation of Everybody's talking on the soundtrack of Midnight Cowboy. A subtle yet significant influence on other singer-songwriters such as Bob Dylan and Tim Buckley, Neil was a reclusive person, eschewing publicity. Neil passed away in 2001, leaving a legacy that surpasses his songs.

This album is comprised of earlier released live tracks available on Other side of this life and The many side of Fred Neil. But it also includes four tracks only available on folk compilations including one, The sky is falling, wich has never been available anywhere else (unless the Raven release of August has some surprises). This makes the album a must for anybody who takes folkmusic and singer-songwriters to heart.

    Album Description

1965 was a busy year in Bill Evans' career, beginning with a New York studio session on February 3, accompanied by Israels and Bunker. The session was issued as Trio 65. The trio then began a European tour where they were recorded in Paris on February 13. This is the concert concluded on the current release, which was taken from a radio broadcast. As a bonus, we have added a rare radio broadcast from New York's Birdland, which also features Chuck Israels on bass, but with Paul Motian on drums. The announcer is Sidney "Symphony Sid" Torin, whose voice and pet phrases are well-known by Jazz fans. Torin presented many live broadcasts from Birdland, the Royal Roost, the Hi Hat and other venues, which were fortunately saved for posterity by the likes of Boris Rose and a few more aficionados, who were eagerly waiting at home with their recording machines, ready to capture the broadcasts' every note. That's probably how these three tunes were preserved. Lonehill Jazz. 2007.

    Album Description

This historic recording is the only true live recording of Ernest Tubb and his Texas Troubadours. Recorded in 1965 by Texas Troubadour Jan Kurtis, the sound quality is absolutely phenomenal. This 2 CD set captures the feeling of actually sitting in the audience during one of Ernest's shows. Members of the Texas Troubadours are also featured here with performances by Cal Smith, Jack Greene and a drum solo by Jan Kurtis the only known drum solo ever recorded in a country CD. In the words of Ernest's son Justin, "If you close your eyes and listen to this album, you can recapture the feeling of actually sitting in the audience. If you never saw him, this is the next best thing. And to me, "In Person" was the only way to appreciate Ernest Tubb."

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful postcard from 1965.......2005-11-27

When Ernest Tubb and the Texas Troubadours rolled their tour bus into Tacoma, Washington in 1965, former Troubadour drummer Jan Kurtis was there to record the show. The result is a wonderful un-retouched snap shot of Tubb's live show. Tubb is thoroughly relaxed, taking requests, laughing at blown solos, dedicating songs to people in the audience. During one number a flashbulb in an audience member's camera audibly explodes and Tubb starts laughing about how he thought it was a jealous husband from their previous stop after guitarist Leon Rhodes. ("And if I was scared, think about how Leon felt!"). The Troubadours, led by Rhodes and steel guitarist Buddy Charlton are in fine form. After years of smoking Tubb's voice is sepulchral, but who cares? Remarkably fine sound quality.

This is a fine performance by a country legend. The interactions with the audience and band are great , and the quality is very good. If you buy one ET record, get this. Only negative is that it doesn't have " Waltz across Texas"

Yeah brother cats, we all had the Wes video recorded in Belgium. I know you jazzcats like me had the Wes video (I had the VHS now I have it in DVD), the one the begins with this version of Impressions, so you know how good is this stuff. I could not add nothing more because you know what an exceptional music is the music you have here. But I can say to fill this white page that this reissue is really well done by Gambit. Three european shows on a single cd. They're short shows for sure. But absolutly to have if you are in love with Wes, like me. I'm mad about Wes. But let's hear what he does on Trane's Impressions. I mean. His talent was mindblowing... This music has been recorded in 1965 and Wes sounds light years ahead still today! The tunes list is a little bit repetitive of course (anyway repetita juvant), you have three versions of Twisted blues, a couple of Here's that rainy day, another couple of Jingles, but .. you know that Wes really could create very different versions of the solo for one song, really IMPROVISING. His melodic gift was so amazing that he didn't play cliches, he really reinvented the solo each time following his incredible rhythmic sense. Impressive only if you don't know how magic Wes was. Here you'll find again the reasons why Wes is considered the best of them all and one of the greatetst musicians that ever lived. The bands that played with Wes were great. Harold Mabern trio and Martial Solal combo did fantastic job in supporting Wes. If you have a good Wes collection you have to own this. It is an important chapter in his history.

    5 out of 5 stars A real treasure!.......2005-11-14

This Gambit release features 79 minutes of Wes Montgomery live in Belgium, England and Germany in 1965. Wes plays at his absolute best on the three sessions, two of which include one of his most exciting quartets ( with Harold Mabern, Arthur Harper and Jimmy Lovelace). The recording quality is very good throughout the CD. Serious fans will want to grab this item right away, before it goes out of print.

This eight-CD set captures Miles Davis's second great quintet at its fiercest, loose with both the blossoming of familiarity between the players and the broadness of its attacks on the mostly well known tunes the group called during two nights at Chicago's Plugged Nickel in 1965. And you can hear it all, from "The Theme" that closed the quintet's sets to multiple, radically different takes of several tunes. Davis formed this band with just its heated potential in mind, opting for youth in Wayne Shorter's tenor sax, Herbie Hancock's piano, Ron Carter's bass, and, especially, Tony Williams's unlocked rhythmic energy. It does the mind good when listening to these takes on "If I Were a Bell," "Stella by Starlight," and the polarizing "All Blues" and "No Blues" that Williams was under 20 when punching this group's forward motion. These live shows make clear that Davis was a savvy cat, sticking to the tried 'n' true when playing live and then indulging new tunes that eschewed formulaic jazz structures on the string of his new quintet's explosive studio recordings that began months earlier with E.S.P. (all of them found on the Grammy-winning Complete Columbia Studio Sessions, 1965-'68 box set). But the Plugged Nickel tunes show that familiar or not, these tunes are platforms for scrappy creative apexes when played live. Davis's trumpet is typically midrange, except when he deconstructs even his own range limitations with squawks and artful miscues. Shorter braves convolutions that tear into his tone, taking his solos far afield from the harmony and melodies at hand only to reshape the tunes. As live jazz, this collection is possibly some of the best in recorded history, adventurous without leaving the ears boxed and powerfully enlightening about where Miles Davis would go in the 1960s. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars The Holy Grail, The Rosetta Stone.......2007-02-10

This is indeed the crux of Miles live recordings. Enough words have been said about it, and there aren't enough stars in the sky for me to properly rate this set, it is the Bees Knees!
In regards to how long it may or may not be out-of-print...it was only ever issued once in 1995 and only recently has it become so outragously expensive. It's even closing in on, price wise, the Thelonious Monk Complete Riverside box set. I don't understand how Sony/Legacy/Columbia could benefit from NOT rereleasing this box set, they would make a ton, and so many people are looking for it. As far as I can tell, though, there are no plans for a reissue. So if you can afford the asking price some of these people are asking I say, email the seller and get exact specifics; the condition of the jewel cases, discs, and the box itself. If all is mint and the seller swears by it then it is worth it. It's just a shame that the record company has dropped the ball on this one. Dropped it and watched it roll away and then smoked more crack while they watched it roll away.
I love you Miles, Thanx for the awesome legacy.

    *update*
I recently had a brainstorming session with a couple of audiophiles, one being the owner of the local used record shop, and we looked up this box set in some massive jazz catalog (I will not post how much it lists for to prevent vendors from price gouging). Apparently this set was manufactured by Mosaic for Sony/Legacy. Now, I can't find any info to verify this on the box or in the notes, only that it was "manufactured by Columbia Records". But if this set was actually outsourced to Mosaic then we can be sure of one thing: it will not be reissued.

1 out of 5 stars Out of Print?? Why? For How Long???.......2007-02-07

The 1 star is for this 5 star CD box set being no longer available. Does anyone know why or if it will be reissued soon? I have the Highlights CD and the "Live at the Plugged Nickel" double LP - but not being able to buy this is disappointing and puzzling.

Thank you in advance for any help.

    3 out of 5 stars A liitle pricey.......2006-01-26

I simply believe these box sets that have been coming out lately are too pricey. However if money is no object to you this is an interesting look into Miles live performances during this wonderful searching period. In addition there is a wild version of "If I were a Bell" where I believe Miles actually gets lost for quite a few bars. Again - too expensive - but otherwise recommended.

    3 out of 5 stars As a listener , I couldn't 'crack the code' , could not connect.......2005-11-19

I have a number of Miles' albums and I took a chance buying this boxed set . I knew he took chances in a live situation , so I knew it wouldn't be mellow music . He sounds desperate on this and whilst that is valid , it doesn't make for repeated listening .

I knew many of the songs beforehand so I thought I'd be able to follow things through .

I should have known that these musicians were operating at such a high level that they were able to take things much further than mere mortals such as myself .

The solos ( apart from the drum solos ) went over my head as they went so far 'out' that I became lost as a listener .

I attempted to listen again and again to make a connection with this music , but it did not happen .

I have since traded in the box set , though I am left with a great respect for this group .

It is a shame that the record company did not release it while Miles was alive - maybe he wouldn't have been happy with that , trading on nostalgia for the past , but he would have profited from it .

5 out of 5 stars Powerhouse live set..........2005-09-22

I think it's the complexity of this that blows me away. Sort of like a book containing deep thoughts, like DeTocqueville or C.S. Lewis, where you read a few sentences and have to pause to absorb the density of the material. I've listened to this entire set multiple times, and still learn something new whenever I put it on.

Williams is a monster... he is to beyond-bebop as Art Blakey is to bebop... like the music is powered by a Hemi. I find Hancock a little repetitive and derivative, but Shorter is SHARP... and Miles, though imperfect, is out there taking chances every time he plays. That they're doing this on STANDARDS is even more mind-blowing. Killer, killer jazz.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for the avid fan of Son House................2006-09-19

Eddie James "Son" House was born in 1902 and was one of the earliest blues musicians in the 1920's playing with Charlie Patton and even serving as an early mentor to Robert Johnson until Johnson left town and "sold his soul to the devil" for his amazing skills.

It is amazing that with such a paucity of recordings, this Baptist bluesman's status could forever be forged in the annals of American music as legendary. Son House record a mere 7 Paramount sides in 1930, some field recordings by Alan Lomax in 1941 & 1942, and some sessions in 1965 after his "rediscovery." He put the guitar down around 1942 because, as he stated in an interview in the 1960's, all of his friends were dying, from Charlie Patton to Robert Johnson......he simply thought he would be next if he kept on playing. And so he put his guitar down for 20 plus years.

Outside of the three times he officially recorded in the field or in studio sessions, there is not a lot of material for the avid fan of Son House. Luckily for us, we have recordings such as "Live at the Gaslight in 1965." He may not have the white-hot intensity of the 1930 Paramount sessions, but the intensity is there nonetheless. And we are witness to a soft spoken Son House as he talks very softly between songs.......for me, this is what I enjoy the most even though the music is fantastic. He doesn't say much, but his soft spoken words contrast starkly with his singing and presence. Listening to this album is like finding a treasure, a treasure to be savored and enjoyed partly because it is a testament to one of the all time great names in the genre of the blues. And partly because sadly, there is simply a dearth of recordings by Son House. When the audience applauds in gentle claps, you get the distinct impression that they do not know how great the figure in front of them will ultimately prove to be.

Enjoy the songs on this album.....they were made by a master who to this very day is the epitome of delta blues.

        4 1/2 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Listen and Learn.......2004-03-03

Even if he hadn't influenced anyone, even if historically he was a 19 year old kid from Shirley, Long Island, even if this recording at just been waxed last night, this is good, essential blues listening, you won't want to stop listening, you wont stop seeing the scenes of the blues that the songs make, you won't stop swaying at the power and swing of his guitar playing and singing. On here, my song is Preachin the Blues. I know you will have yours.

Son House taught Robert Johnson the slide blues. Son House taught Muddy Waters. When Son House started performing at Blues festivals again in the mid 1960s, some of Muddy's younger band members would start to go off for a smoke or whatever when the old man came on stage. Muddy wouldn't let them. Muddy Waters would tell all his band members to be quiet and pay attention when the man played because even compared with Muddy, this was the real deal.

Rediscovered in Rochester, New York, relearning to play the guitar, (how this country abuses the masters that come from its people, particularly its Black people), put back on the stage by the folk revival's blues section, House made recordings that reproduced his old masterpies, with a wrier sense of meaning than before.

People outside of the blues life focus on the guitar playing or the rhythm of the singing, but where the power comes from is the feeling and the words that are put together, the life and the meaning of the blues. Son House in his youth and his old age, on this and his other sides, always gave it.

So Like Muddy Waters, I would like you to know that
Son House is the real deal.

        5 out of 5 stars Magnificent.......2005-05-04

I got a really old scratchy CD of this concert, but the sound blows me away. Coltrane's one and only live version of A Love Supreme (actually he performed parts of it live later, but these are lost to history) is truly a revelation. It is much less meditative than the studio version, with a hard edged sound that is typical of Coltrane's live performances.

Acknowledgement: Unfortunately this track, the most famous, is also the least inspired. Coltrane seems almost weary during his solos, and the repeated Love Supreme motif in several keys seems forced and sloppy this time. There is no chanting. The tune simply breaks off strangely.

Resolution: This movement, representing Coltrane's resolution to give up drugs and follow the "esteemed path" is a brutal, agonising channeling of pain. Coltrane at one stage makes a noise I have never heard on a sax before - a kind of puffing asthmatic sound that is rather disturbing. The general atmosphere is one of pain and anguish, which is very suitable for the movement.

Pursuance: This movement, representing Coltrane's pursuance of the "love supreme", is even more far out than the previous movement. The performance of "Pursuance" here is widely regarded as a masterpiece of improvisation, and I can't argue with that. Trane had taken a big step towards the avant-garde by this time, and you can hear it.

Psalm: If anything this is even farther out than "Pursuance", because there is no beat. Trane almost totally ignores the words to his poem, and after about two bars from the original version he goes way, way out. He does a call and response series, in which he barks out a motif in an avant garde screech, then answers it with a melodious and reflective motif.

Impressions: A ten minute bass solo precedes an ear-stretching series of solos by Trane that almost totally obliterate the original melody. When the head of the tune reappears at the end, it is almost unrecogniseable amongst the squeaks and hoots.

The version I have also includes Naima. This is my favorite version of this Coltrane standard; Coltrane's 1965 sound stretches the boundaries of the old Quartet sound, so that the usually reflective, peaceful tune suddenly vanishes in a welter of emotive screaming - before miraculously returning at the end, unscathed. This is truly a remarkable performance.

2 out of 5 stars For Diehard Coltrane Fans Only, I Think.......2003-08-14

I think you have to be a really serious fan of Coltrane to enjoy this album. Without hearing another version of Love Supreme before listening to this one, I don't think you can appreciate the longer version. I would not want this to be one's first exposure to John Coltrane - older and less unconventional pieces like Equinox, My Favorite Things, and others might be a better place to start. I am only a casual Coltrane fan, and I was put off by both tracks.

This performance has been issued under several labels, one which added Naima as a bonus track.

        5 out of 5 stars SUPREME.......2002-03-26

If you know and love John Coltrane's quintessential "A love supreme" then you also need to hear the version included in this performance. Following on from the cathartic experiment that was "Ascension", this interpretation is much freer than the original as well as being fifteen minutes longer.

The group (Coltrane's "classic" quartet with McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass and Elvin Jones on drums) are all on excellent form and although they adhere to the same four-part structure of the studio recording, things start to get really interesting during the "Pursuance" section which culminates in a frenetic duet between Coltrane and Jones. Then, in an extended "Psalm", Trane breaks free from the self-imposed restrictions of the original to produce a blistering coda of overtone exploration....

        5 out of 5 stars A Must Supreme.......2001-12-13

This is the only live version of 'A Love Supreme' and is really worth having it since everything played by Trane in Juan les Pins and Paris that summer is first class Trane.

5 out of 5 stars I know nothing about this cd.......2000-07-30

I just want want to say that the last time I was in Antibes, the weather was divine, the beer was flowing and john coltrane was blowing. it was great. Get this cd!
