In December 2002, country singer Darryl Worley traveled with the USO to Afghanistan, arriving home on Christmas Eve. Two days later, he collaborated with songwriter Wynn Varble on "Have You Forgotten?," a 9/11-themed call to battle that emotionally evokes the falling Twin Towers, the ruined Pentagon, and the heroes in a Pennsylvania field, even as it takes a giant leap in equating Bin Laden with Saddam Hussein. The single became an instant hit on radio, which meant Worley needed an album to go with it. The problem was, he had only a couple of new songs, including "I Will Hold My Ground." And so DreamWorks reprised six songs from Worley's 2000 debut album, Hard Rain Don't Last, and another half-dozen from his 2002 CD, I Miss My Friend, to form this collection. As with new songs "Shiloh" and "I Will Hold My Ground," most of the recycled songs ("POW 369," "Those Less Fortunate Than I") fit the pro-war mood or take on new interpretations in light of world events. No matter what your political bent, this compilation showcases the twangy West Tennessean as a honky-tonk master very much in the vein of Merle Haggard--even if he lacks the Hag's irony and understatement in matters of war. --Alanna Nash

Have you forgotten?.......2007-05-09
This CD is awesome with that title song. That song makes you think back to the day NY was hit and all those people died. Also makes you angry just a little bit to hear we haven't fixed any the leaks, they are still coming in to blend in.
Time to actually know something.......2007-04-22
From a 2007 point of view one could conclude 3400+ soldiers have died for nothing behind the thinking glorified in this album. It was pitiful then and criminal now. If you are upset with the prior two sentences please read "Fiasco" Thomas Ricks and "Imperial life in the Emerald City" Rajiv Chandrasekaran, then look at yourself in the mirror.
A great cd.......2007-02-27
I love this cd, there is certainly a patriotic overtone to the whole album, but there are some great country honky tonk songs as well. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes styles like Toby Keith, Kenny Chesney, etc. I think the people posting the controversial remarks are missing the point, there really are people against this war (strongly against) and this is just a wonderful title song to those who have let that day and everything it represented fade away into a distant memory. My husband is currently serving in Iraq and I made a copy and sent it to him. I know the men and women he works with will enjoy this cd, it is definitely a morale lifter to know there are people like Darryl Worley who are unswerving in there support of our troops and not afraid to 'hold their ground' on these issues. Enough on my soap box - buy this cd, you will enjoy it!
Of Course I Haven't Forgotten!.......2006-10-03
But I'm just very frustrated in the comparisons between Saddam and Osama. Though Darryl doesn't mention the relation, he released this on the eve of the Iraq war, and "this war" refers to Iraq--and I've never met anyone, ANYONE, who said "Awww, forget 'bin Laden!" This song is about Saddam. But though Saddam was (is) nuts, he wasn't stupid. He wanted to keep his power, not do dumb stuff to rile up outsiders. Al Qaeda in Iraq didn't really even exist before the invasion, and now they are a strong force there. I feel the invasion has TAKEN AWAY from the real fight on terrorism--we're so bogged down there, we can't put our full efforts into thwarting terror plots and encouraging moderates to be on our side--there is a PR campaign to be fought, folks--you can't (well, I guess you CAN) just bomb everything in sight. Most of our enemies in Iraq (even 'Al Qaeda' there) don't give two craps about Osama (btw I first wrote Saddam there--it does get confusing!), they just feel their country was invaded--kind of like how the Michigan Militia would react here. The admistration disrupted the world and divided our nation. United we stand, indeed.
And though I haven't listened to the album, this has exactly FOUR new songs. Tell me that's not opportunism. So no, Darryl, I have not forgotten the day when I saw thousands die when our two towers were destroyed, but I'm afraid you have, in the way you've replaced Osama bin Laden with Saddam Hussein.
UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL.......2006-09-10
Wow, what a great song...I don't even know where to begin! Have you forgotten? has such an explosion of patriotism that this country should be proud of. The only sad thing is that it took a disaster like 9/11 to bring it out and show it off.
And to those who don't believe...

Customer Reviews:
very enjoyable.......2001-07-19
At first, I'd like to correct error. The pianist, Larisa Gergieva is NOT Varely Gergiev's WIFE! She is his sister. (Elder one, I think.)
About this disc, I enjoyed this recital. Gorchakova is one of my favorite soprano. Her voice is suited well to these Russian songs. It's interesting for me to her Russian songs. If you want to hear more Russian songs, try "Songs of Desire" by Olga Bolodina from Philips.
The showcase for the Spinto soprano.......2000-04-25
Galina Gorchakova, Kirov's leading lady, is a true spinto soprano, not the more common forced lyric one. Her sound is unique and quite unusual, almost "mezzo-ish" at certain times, but with surprisingly easy resonant top. I could not help being reminded of another great Russian Galina - Vishnevskaya, the Bolshoi prima donna of 60s and 70s up to her departure from Communist regime with her husband Mstislav Rostropovich. Since then, there was an unsettling vacuum in the realm of sopranos capable of singing Russian and Italian repertoire. Luckily, Gorchakova seems ready and able to take on most of Vishnevskaya's signature roles, including Katerina of Shostakovich's "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk." Her clarity of diction and musical intelligence are a pleasure to hear particularly on the Programme presented here because the romances (a leader-like Russian art songs) are written to some of the most beautiful Russian poetic texts.
I feel it is important to note that neither the singing nor accompaniment here is flawed at all, as the reviewer below found. Furthermore, there is no tendency to "go flat". The only thing that came as a surprise to me was inclusion of several numbers written originally for a baritone or even a bass, such as "It Was in Early Spring" or "I Remember the Wonderful Moment." However, they were executed so brilliantly, it made me forget about the specifics and just enjoy Gorchakova's beautiful voice and expressiveness.
Most of you probably got a chance to see the MET's magnificent production of Tchaikovsky's "Pique Dame" with Gorchakova, Domingo, Borodina and Hvorostovsky in leading roles. Aside from Lisa, Gorchakova is also an incredible interpreter of highly demanding role of Elisabetta from Verdi's "Don Carlo" and Leonora from his "La Forza del Destino." I can't wait to hear her "Aida." Amazingly she does not struggle with dramatic Verdian repertoire, even though it lays relatively high for such a voice. And its power allows her to cut through heavy orchestration with ease, preserving flowing, and seemingly endless vocal line with no audible breathing. Philips generously provided us with several phenomenal Russian complete opera recordings featuring Gorchakova's talents: check out "Prince Igor," "The Maid of Pskov," "Iolanta," and "The Fiery Angel," the latter one being a rare jewel and destined to become one of the greatest recorded achievements of all time. Ms. Gorchakova is also a very good actress with a beautiful stage presence and somewhat reserved but passionate delivery. Hearing this CD is essential for Russian romance fans as well as for those who want to hear a true spinto soprano at its full glory, accompanied only by a subtle gentle piano of Larissa Gergieva. I was particularly impressed with a booklet that finally has Cyrillic texts instead of despicable way of spelling Russian words with English letters. There are also good English translations by Philip Taylor that stay true to the texts but also convey their romantic feel. If I could, I would have given this disc ten stars!
Flawed but beautiful.......2000-03-16
This album of wonderful Russian romances and art songs is marred only slightly by Galina Gorchakova's tendency to go flat. Still, her unbelievably beautiful soprano voice and emotional connection with these pieces more than makes up for this. Gorchakova has never become quite as well known as her compatriots Olga Borodina and Dmitri Hvorostovsky, and hasn't recorded as much as they have either. This is a shame; I would love to hear her in some of the Italian verismo repertoire. Her rich spinto sound would serve her well, and I believe that she is known for such interpretations as Butterfly, Liu, and Tosca. I would also like to her her Lisa on recording (from Pique Dame).
Anyway, this album is truly beautiful. Larissa Gergieva, the pianist, is the sister of Valery Gergiev, the director of the Kirov Opera in St. Petersburg. I think possibly some nepotism is happening here, as she is not an ideal accompanist. Still, she supports Gorchakova well, and doesn't detract from the beauty of these pieces.

A shining star among elegant ladies of song!.......2004-11-06
One of my favorite things about Ethel Ennis is the sheer energy she put in to the songs she sang. Not available here, but on LPs are her versions of "Joey, Joey-Joey" and "I've Got that Feeling (That Strange, Exciting Feeling") which she also performed in a Scopitone. She also had the honor of singing the National Anthem at a presidential inauguration, which was something I never knew about her before! I'd have to put her in a Ketty Lester ("Love Letters") category of elegant ladies of song if one was needed. But Ethel picked up the tempo quite well too. A particularly charming thing she did on high notes too was hit them as if someone had run up to her and literally squeezed her tightly. This is present at least in "Still get a Thrill". It makes her vocals very unique and special, IMO.
Transform your living room into the perfect Jazz club.......2003-02-18
Ethel Ennis is one of the great Jazz singers that stayed regional, preferring to stay near her family and home town scene in Baltimore instead of going really big time. I saw her sing many times at the King of France Tavern in Annapolis in the 1970s and 1980s. To me she really represents some of the very best of classic, female vocalist Jazz; and without the feeling you've heard her a thousand times already. This is the main reason you should buy this record.
She was a great local Dallas Singer in the late 1950's.......2002-04-13
Ethel Ennis has been underated in her career. She was very popular and made guest apperances @ the 90th floor in Dallas.
I can't find it, but I understand she used to be a Big Band Singer. I am looking for the works she did from that period. She is a great jazz vocalist. Dirk
A jazz legend.......2000-12-16
I live in Korea, and I discovered Ethel Ennis by accident. I found an album in a Korean music store (Lullabies for Losers) distributed from Japan. What a discovery! Treat yourself to ANY album by Ethel Ennis. She has a voice that can melt butter. I read that she was admired by Ella Fitzgerald. What better recommendation. I first bought "Lullabies for Losers" and heard the difinitive version of "Love for Sale." I have played the album hours on end. Then I bought this double album from EMI and heard an incomparable rendition of "My Foolish Heart" as well as 21 more exquisite tunes. Ethel Ennis is a jazz legend. She is, as I understand, still performing. My dream is to one day hear her in concert. Thank you, Ms. Ennis, for your music.
it is a nice swing easy lissen cd and a great orchestra.......1999-04-20
the songs are great i like this music more than the jazz music from her. the voice is great and i hope that ther coming more of this kind of music from ethel ennis

I'm not sure what bollixed up Ms. Mulcahy's order -- she has my sympathies -- perhaps a data base error that has since been fixed. In any case, if what _you're_ looking for is delightful "light classical" music of the brass variety -- think Canadian Brass or Empire Brass -- this is a CD you will certainly enjoy. One of the pieces, the Quartet for Brass by Steve Scott, was recently used as a segue on NPR's "All Things Considered," and seduced me totally in thirty seconds. If the sound of brass brightens your day, give NBV a try.

"Superb Recital exploring a wide repertoire".......2000-02-04
Enthusiasts of Russian Song may be interested to note the comments of British reviewers. Classic CD called it a "Superb recital" and commented on Savenko: "He has a genuine bass-baritone voice slightly lighter, more lyrical and wide-ranging than the typically cavernous Russian bass, but with a particularly thrilling quality" Classic FM Magazine placed it within their recommended recordings section and called it "A debut recital of great quality", and Gramophone pointed out "To listen to this carefully chosen recital is to be reminded how consistent the tradition of the lyrical song, or romans, is in Russia" Savenko responds "eloquently and vigorously, and without caricature to such as that old Chaliapin stalwart, Mussorgsky's 'Song of the Flea'. BBC Music Magazine chose to highlight that a decade ago, the songs of the composers chosen here were little-known outside Russia, "but the past few years had seen an abundance of recordings. With so much competition, the quality of the performance and programme is critical, but happily both these discs come up trumps" The other disc referred to is Savenko's recording on another label entitled Russian Vocal Masterpieces Mussorgsky and Rimsky-Korsakov Songs.
Savenko presents a fine selection of Russian art songs........1999-07-23
Vassily Savenko is not as well known in the U.S. as his colleague Dimitri Hvorostovsky, but both of them are worthy successors to a long line of Russian bassos going back to Feodor Chaliapin. On this CD, "Russian Images", Savenko is accompanied by the young pianist and composer, Alexander Blok. As Russian art songs share many of the charms of German lieder, including their reliance on the piano's role in the overall schema, Blok's contribution is vital. The disc contains works by a galaxy of Russian composers, including Borodin, Glinka, Mussorgsky, Rachmaninov, Rimsky- Korsakov, and Tchaikovsky, many of them in settings of poems by Alexander Pushkin. Although some knowledge of Russian is helpful in gaining a full appreciation of these vocal gems, the disc is accompanied by a free, but serviceable, English translation.
