Amazon.com essential recording

By now a seasoned master of late-night amour and heartbreak, Vandross upped the creative ante somewhat with this 1985 release. A concept about the rise and fall of a relationship, The Night I Fell in Love is classic Luther, down to the homage to pop-soul's past (an aching cover of Stevie Wonder's "Creepin") and the endless promise of love's potential. Always one of the best and most understated male singers in black pop, Luther is possibly at his peak here. It's impossible to keep the emotions in check on such odes to love as "If Only for One Night" or the finger-popping "My Baby Comes Home." --Amy Linden

Wonderful way to end a long day with someone you love. He was one of a kind.

5 out of 5 stars Another Luther masterpiece.......2006-12-14

By 1985 Luther Vandross was the premier ballader in R&B. This album spawned four Billboard R&B singles in "'Til My Baby Comes Home," "It's Over Now," "Wait for Love," and "If Only for One Night." It also featured "Creepin" but Luther's the best at ballads in particular If Only For One Night.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe Luther's best.......2006-10-21

The fourth album in what I like to call"The getting to know Luther Trilogy".Four albums that define and sum up this man.We know as "Luther"

1.Never Too Much 1981
2.Forever,For Always,For Love 1982
3.Busy Body 1983
4.The Night I fell in Love 1985

I could never pick a fav.Luther album. But This one and Busy Body are my favs.

I was 4 years old when this came out.Luther was one the few artists as a child that I recognized. My parents played this and Busy Body alot.So those two albums introduced me Luther.

Til' my Baby comes home-Song about waiting on your baby.Every girl coming onto you.But No.My girl is plenty.

The Night I fell in love-Funky drum programmed and bass playing by my boy
Marcus Miller.Everybody has a time when they first fell in love.So u could relate and reminisce wit' Luther.

If only for one night-Longing,needing,wanting to be wit that woman badly.
Secs,minutes,hours,one day,one night.

Creepin-Stevie wonder remake with a jazzed out appeal. That girl is in everywhere I go.Dreams,Thoughts,Feelings

It's over Now-Funk Jam with some more heavy bass lines from Marcus Miller.
Woman cheating on you with not one but two guys. It's over baby.

Wait for love-If you can't find love.Don't worry.Don't rush.It'll find you.

My Sensitivity-Emotions take control sometimes when you like or love somebody so much.

The other side of the world-you never know where you'll find love.Right under your nose.

I have to say this is the last fully R&B album Luther would do.Venturing into pop in his future albums.

This is the Luther I'll always remember.Jheri Curled,Goatee.

RIP Luther

4 out of 5 stars Needed addition - good stuff.......2005-12-19

Just about anything by the White Stripes is worth it and this short CD is no different. The rendition of "Fell in Love with a Girl" is, as you would expect, raw and edgy. The other two songs (B-sides from a Japanese release I think) are the same. This small group showcases the Stripes energy and experimental freedom. A need addition to any fan's library.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly What You Want.......2005-09-25

For those who felt scorned after buying the "Blue Orchid" single and finding not searing rock through and through, but the quirkyness of "Who's A Big Baby?" and creepiness of "Though I Hear You Calling, I Will Not Answer," have faith. This single is exactly what you want.

It, of course, rocks right through "Fell in Love With a Girl" like it's no one's business--easily one of the Stripes' most appealing songs, at least in the public sense (but I could suggest a dozen more appealing unpopular songs). But the treat here is that the single doesn't slide into the genre experimentation that bugs so many on "Blue Orchid" (it doesn't bug me, but check out that page--all the reviewers go nuts about it). It's a rocker through and through. Both "Let's Shake Hands" and "Lafayette Blues" have the harsh, unpolished sound of "The White Stripes," the album. "Let's Shake Hands" is a straightforward rocker, whereas "Lafayette Blues" is a dabbling experiment for Jack in the French language.

It's wonderful to be able to look back on this single in retrospect, being able to compare it to "Blue Orchid," but it's in no way NECESSARY. This gem stands alone.

5 out of 5 stars B-sides or otherwise.......2003-12-06

Just a head's up in case you didn't know that the two non-album tracks on this are also the bonus tracks for the Japanese version of the "White Stripes" cd. If you have problems with space to store your collection like I do, the import is about as much money as the regular album + the single. The White Stripes are one of those bands where the b-sides are as good as or better (as in this case) than some of the album tracks. "Let's Shake Hands" is a great rave up along the lines of "Let's Build A Home". "Lafayette Blues" was also one of the audio tracks on the free dvd that came with some copies of "White Blood Cells". It's kind of a bizarre song sung in French until Jack quotes: "I'm ready ready Teddy to Rock 'N' Roll", then they just rip it up & play as fast as they can. Meg can't even use her beloved cymbals it's so fast. Get these songs in one way or another.

4 out of 5 stars Fall in Love with This.......2007-06-13

I Fell in Love by Carlene Carter is a strong 4 star album; straddles the line between 4 and 5 but not quite there. One flaw is that a lot of the songs sound rather the same, at least the rhythm and music do. Here are some songs:

I Fell in Love - this title track is very good, a rollicking rhythm

Come on Back - very good energetic song, rocking rhythm with a strong drum beat. Great lyrics. Example: "like a chain of heartaches, round your neck. Give em enough rope and they'll hang you yet."

My Dixie Darlin - has a flavor of traditional and bluegrass

Me and the Wildwood Rose - a reminiscense back on making music as a child. A tribute to her music-making family.

Overall a strong album

5 out of 5 stars one tear many smiles.......2006-05-09

I listened to I Fell In Love the other day for the first time in many years. It hasn't lost any of its considerable charm. With Ultra-High Powered musicianship, much of it courtesy of Albert Lee, the underappreciated King of Country-Rock, Carlene's miraculous blend of Rock Energy and Country Feelings can brighten anyone's day. As for the tear: Me and the Wildwood Rose earns at least one.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Fine recital of neglected composer.......2000-10-29

I'd agree with the earlier reviewer that this CD is for those who have already tried Dowland. However Dowland has been fortunate in the recording studio and Campion much neglected (this appears to be the only disc dedicated to him currently available) so Naxos deserve our thanks for having brought Rickards and Linell back together for a second disc. What is particularly encouraging is to find a whole disc of songs, not just a few raisins in a cake of viol music which is how Dowland and his contemporaries are normally represented. Not that I've anything against mixed recitals - the collaborations of Fretwork with Red Byrd are beautiful - but it tends to be the same better known songs.

The first recordings of early English music on the Naxos label (I'm thinking of Summerly's earlier recordings of Byrd, Tomkins, Gibbons) lacked texts, that has been corrected in later releases, including both this disc (timing 52:52), and the earlier Rickards Dowland recital (8.553381, 1997, timing 74:08). Sound on both discs is more than adequate.

4 out of 5 stars Good Performance but the content?.......2000-02-01

I make no claims to being knowledable about the intricacies of this music. But if I were giving stars I'd give the performance four or five and the content...um...that's the hard part.

I bought this out of curiosity. Campion's lyrics turn up occasionally in anthologies of poetry and I was curious to hear the songs. I own Rickards and Linell's "Dowland: Flow my tears and other lute songs" and i play it often so I also wanted to know what Dowland's competition sounded like.

Firstly, the performance is of the same high standard as on the other disk. Which is good. Linell plays well and Rickards' voice is fine. The liner notes provide good background information as well as the words to the songs. The only real complaint I could have about the performance is probably related to production: The lute sounds small, thin and distant compared with, say, Bream's lute on "The golden age of English Lute music" or Lindberg's on "The complete solo lute music". This is true of the pair's Dowland recording as well but it may only be a drawback if you're trying to use the performances as a guide to playing the songs yourself. ( I was).

The real drawback to this recording though is the material. Play the Dowland and you're liable to find yourself humming odd snatches of the songs. Play the Campion and you're liable to have difficulty remembering any of the individual tunes. Nor do the lyrics redeem the music. He probably was a "better " lyric writer than Dowland (whatever that means) but music wise Dowland beats him hollow.

If you're studying music history this might be an interesting collection. But if you're just curious and want an introduction to the songs of the period, go for the Dowland first. You're liable to be left feeling like you could listen to more, and then the Campion becomes interesting as a variation. Buy the Campion first and you're liable to wonder why people get enthusiastic about English lute songs. And that would be a pity and a disservice to Linell and Rickards who do such a good job.

        Album Description

Audra Kubat's influences — Joni, Miles, Billie and Nick Drake — come through like a coat of many colors woven into a beautiful and haunting style all her own. Her new CD, 'Since I Fell in Love with the Music,' is the latest step in her musical evolution. Organic, ambient, quiet, moody and powerful, with bare and very imaginative production, 'Since I Fell in Love with the Music' is a darker album than its predecessor, yet still stands as a truly inspired collection that will appeal to fans of rock and acoustic music alike. Like her last effort, 'Million Year Old Sand,' it was recorded as a collaboration between Kubat and Gold Cash Gold's Eric Hoegemeyer, illustrating what happens when two singular artists put their hearts and souls into one project.

This EP was out of print for awhile, but it has been reissued by Rebis Music. Just FYI. The Current 93 cover is excellent. I dig David Tibet's voice, odd as it is, but this song in the hands of Antony made my jaw drop. The other two tracks aren't shabby either. Not the most essential Antony and the Johnsons release, but solid, absolutely.

        4 out of 5 stars Not bad..........2006-06-10

I picked this up at the record store because I thought it was too weird not to. I've always loved the White Stripes, and I was curious to see what a string quartet could do with their music. Contrary to my expectations, I found the songs to be really cool. I suppose it speaks more for Jack White's brilliant songwriting ability than the actual musicians, but if you are a White Stripes fan you might be surprized with this one.

        2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2006-02-18

Of the five String Quartet Tribute albums that I have bought, this is by far the weakest, despite the involvement of Tom Tally, whose Coldplay string tribute tracks are far superior to the ones found on this album. The melodies seem particularly discordant in places, and I can't help but wish that I'd bought a different string quartet album, or even perhaps the bluegrass tribute.

        3 out of 5 stars I like it, I like it........2005-12-18

In spite of my age, 78 years, I find my CD of the White Stripes music played by a string quartet growing on me each time I play it. I think the quality of the strings is not good, a pity.

5 out of 5 stars White Stripes Rock!.......2005-11-23

I really like the White Stripes. Their music is alive and kicking, unlike so much over-rehearsed, technologically drowned-out, re-mixed, so-called music these days. This tribute album has the White Stripes musical quality, regardless if it sounds like it is played by a high-school-level string quartet. Heck, the White Stripes sound like a garage-band to me. In either case, the artists make the music sound reachable, as though I could pick up a guitar and play along. This is a quality I look for in music.

1 out of 5 stars the sound of muzak.......2004-02-19

Why is it an honour to be covered by A String Quartet? Anyone can call themselves a string quartet provided they've got four people in one spot holding stringed-instruments. This is White Stripes elevator muzak. If you think simply giving something a 'classical' string treatment affords low-brow rock with some kind of high-brow prestige you don't really love or understand music at all, and you're buying into a bogus notion of orthodoxy. On the other hand, if you're a large business who plans to keep callers on hold for hours on end, buy this now. It'll make a nice change from Vivaldi.

        5 out of 5 stars Astonishingly Good.......2005-09-14

Unlike the previous reviewer, I will not use this space to denigrate Beethoven, the ridiculousness of which would ruin this review of the lofty and noble tone which Holborne's music deserves. The divine Jordi Savall and Hesperion are perfect, as usual; Holborne clearly deserves to be MUCH better known. His pavans, especially, are achingly beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Anthony Holborne: The teares of the Muses ~ Antony Holborne.......2005-07-30

The 16th century was a splendid time for art, music and theatre. Consort music was the sound a jour and listening to this album one can easily understand why. Holborne is masterfull composer and it would be unfair to say that consort music is less then classical music. Since this sounds nothing like it. I find it to be amazing in its own right and this is not music to be played by a novice. The pieces are by no means easy and requires trained muisicians in order for this music to come of the right way. I would not say that he is on par with Bach, Mozart or Wagner, yet he should be considered just as tallented as Beethoven, Haydn and many other very accomplished composers. This is not a slight against the music. It merely reflects the fact that Bach, Mozart and Wagner were indeed unique in their tallent and abilities. I love the painitng on the cover of this and it shows some of the best of 16 th century painting. This is simply put it a splendid album that should not be missed.
