Customer Reviews:
A Truck Drivin' Son of a Gun of a compilation.......2005-05-09
This compilation on Westside/Demon Music Group in the UK is by far the best overview of his talent available on CD, even if it doesn't contain "Six Days On The Road." The reason why is that this is a compilation of his top 40 country chart hits on Mercury in which the original hit recording of "Six Days On The Road" was not released on, in fact, it was on Dave's Golden Wing label and when the followup hit, Cowboy Boots came out, he changed the name of his label to Golden Ring because Mercury had a Wing label being used as their budget priced imprint. The version of "Six Days" he recorded for Mercury is a re-recording, available on CD on the Millennium Collection, and not the hit version, which can be found on Time-Life and Rhino country compilations. But the songs on here are the cream of the crop of his Mercury years including the classic title song, "Last Day In The Mines," "Mad," the Kris Kristofferson penned "Vietnam Blues," "Trucker's Prayer," "Keep On Truckin'," and his only #1 country chart hit, the Tom T. Hall penned "The Pool Shark." Purchase this CD for a near definitive overview of Dave Dudley in his truck drivin' prime and enjoy the "Truck Drivin' Son of a Gun" once again.

Album Description
Released in 1967, Red Simpson's Truck Drivin' Fool continued the focus of his debut album: examining the good and the treacherous, the amusing and sobering sides of trucker life. Today, Simpson, considered a Bakersfield legend, continues performing around his hometown.
Customer Reviews:
Truck Drivin' Fool by Red Simpson.......2006-11-10
Continuation of his debut album, so very happy they are in reproduction on CD. Days of a bygone era, where truckers were so admired and Red brings them to life in his music. Get's better the more you listen to it. A classic CD for the country western enthusiast. If you like Junior Brown, you will certainly like this.
Second volume of superb trucker country.......2004-12-25
Simpson's fourth album reverts to the successful trucker-themed concept of his 1966 debut. And much like the debut, his Bakersfield roots shine through in twangy backings that echo the sound coined by his occasional songwriting partner Buck Owens. As on the debut, Simpson sings of the road's hardships in a matter-of-fact manner that works well with his limited range and adds a convincing note of authority.
The album opens with "Diesel Smoke, Dangerous Curves," Cal Martin's tale of a hard-charging driver on a winding mountain road. Unlike Doye O'Dell's original 1952 waxing, Simpson's is understated, with steel guitar providing the sound a truck hanging on to the curves and an edgy lead guitar to heighten the drama. There's plenty of truckin' lingo (which differs from the kitschy CB buzzwords of 1970s trucker hits) on tunes like "Sleeper, Five-By-Two" and "Jackknife," bringing to mind the mid-60s car-song collaborations of Brian Wilson and Roger Christian.
Though Simpson focuses on the wear-and-tear of the trucker's life on "Born to Be a Trucker" and "Piggyback Blues," there's a lighter, happier side to be found on the Simpson-Owens co-write, "Truck Daddy," and the title track is as contented as a driver on a wide-open road with a full tank of gas. The only real misfire in this collection is a rendition of "A Tombstone Every Mile" whose happy-go-lucky delivery loses the gravity of Dick Curless' original.
Simpson's engaging songs and everyman delivery, his band's twangy arrangements and Ken Nelson's crisp production elevate this far beyond a novelty collection of trucking tunes. Along with Buck Owens classic Capitol albums, this is an essential element of the Bakersfield canon.
Truck Drivin' Genius!!.......2004-08-13
I first heard this in about 1968 when a friend bought a copy - I loved it then & have tried for YEARS to find it.
At last it's re-issued on CD & when it arrived my wife & I played it three times straight off!
It's absolutely wonderful, Red's voice is perfect for this kind of material, his songs are good, & his choice of covers immaculate. The backing on this is perfect Bakersfield, both guitar & steel (musicians uncredited - who are these guys, they're superb!)If you like Country music (before it got sidetracked down a pop alley), you owe it to yourself to get a copy

Truck-drivin' songs hold a narrow but proud niche in the mythology of country & western music. Red Simpson, a Bakersfield songwriting compadre of Buck Owens and Merle Haggard, came into the game late, following the success of Dave Dudley and Del Reeves, and scored but one bona fide hit, 1971's dryly comic "I'm a Truck." But Simpson's work has held up better than most, thanks to his blue-collar voice and those twangin' Bakersfield Telecasters. This 20-track collection is taken from Simpson's mid-'60s and early '70s Capitol albums. Besides "I'm a Truck," highlights include the original version of "Highway Patrol" (memorably covered by Junior Brown on 1993's Guit with It) and a chugging version of "Diesel Smoke, Dangerous Curves." --Rick Mitchell
Customer Reviews:
This is the ONE!.......2007-01-21
Red is awesome. But, if you have never listened to Red or if you are coming to get a taste of Gene Moles genius on guitar.. this is the one you wanna buy! Razor and Tie nailed this release and you will not be disappointed if you want some awesome bakersfield truckin' country.
Just a perfect album.
Hammer down, Red Simpson on the radio.......2002-02-07
Long before C.W. McCall's "Convoy" launched truck driving songs as a Top-40 phenomenon in the mid-70s, numerous artists had driven the theme up the country charts. Simpson, perhaps the Bakersfield hitmaker least identified with the city's famous sound, had a trio of hits as early as 1966: Tommy Collins' oft-covered "Roll, Truck, Roll," Cal Martin's "Diesel Smoke, Dangerous Curves," and Simpson's own "The Highway Patrol," the latter covered recently by Junior Brown.
In the early 70s Simpson struck again with "I'm a Truck" (in which fellow Bakersfield residents Buck Owens and Merle Haggard appear in the lyrics!) and "Awful Lot to Learn About Truck Drivin'." In addition to the hits, he recorded excellent originals and fine covers of classic truckin' tunes like "Truck Drivin' Man" and "Six Days on the Road."
Simpson's early years gigging as a weekend replacement for Owens, not to mention the co-writing they did (including Owens' hit, "Sam's Place"), lent a Telecaster-inspired sting to his music. His voice has a deeper resonance than Owens', and given no Don Rich to harmonize with (not to mention a songbook derived from the perspective of a lone trucker), he mostly sings solo. His style has its obvious descendents in Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen and Dale Watson (anyone who likes Simpson's work would do well to check out Watson's "Truckin' Session").
The only in-print alternative to this collection is EMI's pairing of "Roll, Truck, Roll" and "Man Behind the Badge." The 24-tracks on this two-fer cover some of the same material presented here, and add a dozen police-related titles. Missing from the EMI release are "Truck Drivin' Fool" "I'm a Truck" "Motivatin' Man" "Diesel Smoke, Dangerous Curves" "Born To Be a Trucker" "Jeannie With the Light Brown Cadillac" "Mini-Skirt Minnie" "Country Western Truck Drivin' Singer" "Awful Lot to Learn About Truck Drivin'" and the seasonal "Truckin' Trees for Christmas."
For maximum truckin' fun, this is the rig to drive.
A must have anthology for Red Simpson and truck driving fans.......2001-07-28
This 20 song anthology features songs from each of his 1960's-1970's albums released on Capitol and does include his only top 5 hit, "I'm a Truck." All of the songs, except for 2 tracks which are "Johnny Law" and the top 40 hit which Junior Brown would later cover entitled "Highway Patrol," are about truck driving. As a matter of fact, this anthology does have all of the Roll Truck Roll album minus 3 songs, but those 3 songs can be bought on the essential import twofer of his "Man Behind The Badge" album in its entirety which will give you more of his police songs, and the "Roll Truck Roll" album in its entirety with the original artwork and liner notes for both albums. The classic trucker's Christmas song "Truckin' Trees For Christmas" is on this CD, "Diesel Smoke, Dangerous Curves" is another classic on this CD, the title song, Mini-Skirt Minnie are other classics. In other words, this is a classic CD. What we need someone to do is reissue the rest of Red Simpson's catalog on CD, with the exception of "I'm a Truck" which is a compilation of his trucker's songs that was released to cash in on the popularity of the single for "I'm a Truck" which many of the tracks from that album are on this compilation anyway.
This CD is gear-jammin'.......1999-12-10
Some may think Red Simpson is Junior Brown Sr. (which would make Junior Brown Junior Brown Jr.), but this comp shows who is boss when it come to big guitar and rumbling vocals. Don't confuse this Red with Red "Teddy Bear" Sovine -- this Red shakes the earth like a big ol' GMC and ends up nosing out Dave Dudley when it comes to truck-driving music. This is good stuff for people who like the Bakersfield Sound and appreciate truck-stop cooking.

The Perfect Sound Track For Race Day.......2003-03-14
This is a must for the CD player while you are sitting in race day traffic. "What Else Would I Do On Sunday" is my favorite, along with the song about Dale, Sr.
Warning -- if you are a fan of the "new age" of NASCAR, this isn't for you. It's country to the core, and respects and honors the sport's "Old Dawgs." If you like Tony Stewart and rap music, buy "Crank It Up."
Great CD........2002-02-20
Great CD for any Nascar Fan.
I LOVE THIS CD!!!!!!.......2002-01-07
I could listen to this CD all day long. The songs are so beautiful and are really sang out about Nascar. The Intimidator is very well sang with excellent beat. It brings back so many memories of Dale. Also Asphalt Angels will bring you in tears. A great CD to add to your Nascar collection...
NASCAR Forever.......2001-03-15
I LOVE this album! It has some really amazing tunes! I actually prefer this album's version on Earnhardt than any I ever heard before or after his untimely passing and I am a Gordon fan! Great job and all race fans will enjoy this one I think!!

Buyer Be Aware........2007-05-28
Many of the songs are fairly snappy but only one or two
actually live up to the title hype of the CD. Production
values vary substantially from song to song. The result
is very uneven sound quality overall for the disk. It was
indeed an inexpensive purchase. However, if I had it to
do over again, I would not have bought it.
Big Blues Bang for the Buck.......2005-05-17
I was pleasently surprised with this CD, especially track 17 "White Feathers" by del Santos. Its a fast ditty as all are (its called Drivin' Blues...get it?) I learned more about the tricks of the trade regarding fingerpicking/slide by slowing down track 17 and what I learned is beyond words. As for the the other tracks... all fast, great bluesy slide tracks, great flat picking, all around its a great compilation with nothing lame, and its for cheap, go figure. Most players you will recognize as you will most tunes but to have all these fast tunes on one CD is a good idea. All I have are blues CD's from Charlie Patton up through Elmore James, about two hundred and fifty and Drivin' Blues gets a good work out. .. can't go wrong
