In 1932, Menuhin was just 16 and at the very beginning of his international career when Elgar--then a grand old man in his 70s--asked the young virtuoso to record his Violin Concerto. Elgar himself conducted, and the rehearsals went so well that the composer reportedly canceled the last of them and took the young violinist out for a day at the races. The recording that resulted from this remarkable collaboration has remained a classic from the day it was issued. Elgar's conducting is typically direct and unfussy, while Menuhin really does play the pants off of what is without a doubt the longest and most tiring concerto in the romantic repertoire. Of course, the recorded sound is rather limited and no amount of audio restoration can change that, but fans of great violin playing will still find plenty to enthuse about. --David Hurwitz

Historical Document.......2007-01-12

Before you buy this, be sure that you realize that this recording is absolutely ancient. When I say ancient I mean late 20s and early 30s. There are many advantages to having this recording, the most notable of which is that Sir Elgar himself directs the orchestra. There's something magical about hearing a piece conducted by the composer. The only drawback is that the recording is from the 20s and 30s. Therefore, the recording is not very high quality and some of the nuances of the music can get lost. If you're looking for historical documentation, this recording is elsewhere. Otherwise, it will behoove you to find a more modern recording if you simply want to enjoy the music.

Stunning.......2002-07-12

The solo playing has so much depth to it, I really can't believe it's a sixteen year old playing. If there's a romantic concerto in the repertoire that could really be mishandled by a young player, it would be this one - but somehow Menuhin, even at that age, has managed to express the poignancy and nostalgia of the music better than anyone ever has. Of course, the disc is not without flaws. As has been noted, you can hear the squeaking and junk from the transfer, and there are some absolutely horrendous errors in ensemble between soloist and orchestra. I've heard one of Kennedy's recordings and also Perlman's. For the most part, Perlman generally doesn't get a character that I really like, and the slow tempo in Kennedy's last movement kind of bothers me. I've also heard Shaham do this concerto live on radio with Cleveland Orchestra I believe, and it was really great. Someone should convince him to commit it to CD.

Simply Menuhin.......2002-06-29

I heard twice in my life this concert, I liked so much, specially because has serenity and peace. This Menuhin version conducted by Edward Elgar, is simply pure. I heard the last records of Menuhin, but I never heard him in his first years, simply I don't cry because ...you know, but in some cirscustance of my life if I would heard the Munuhin Solo, simply I could not resist,his natural sound, his phrasing, the solo in the third movement has a sense of nostalgy, with a beautiful vibrato, sorry for the others big masters, but this "carisma" only Sir Yehudi Menuhi. He really was a natural prodigy with a big carisma, if you don't believe me heard him. If not buy the DVD about him, and pay attention to the solo, while he stay with his "Mamina". Buy it you really enjoy. And my respects to Yehudi Menihin, a wonderful violinist of the 20th century.

5 stars, but not for the casual listener........2000-11-28

If you do not have the Elgar concerto already, do not make this your one and only choice. This is not for the casual listener who wants to sit back and enjoy a great violin concerto. If you want to do that, choose Kennedy/Rattle/CBSO on EMI which is simply fantastic. If you do decide to choose this historical document for your second or third recording of this piece for novelty and comparison, choose the Naxos label. They have the same recording for half the price so you won't be as upset just in case you can't stand the sound. Part of the notes for my Naxos copy states. " The present transfers were made from pre-war U.S. Victor sets, (the Elgar from a "Z" shellac pressing). The squeaking noises which can be heard on some portions of the Elgar are on the original masters." They are not kidding, you hear alot of junk in this recording and it is not for the sensitive listener. While Naxos does not sell direct, you may visit naxos.com for more information. Exceptional historical document.......1999-06-14

The Violin Concerto, with the Elgar/Mehuhin partnership in 1932, must be heard to be believed. The interpretation is without peer, and the playing by Menuhin is outstanding. The sound quality of the concerto rivals many digital recordings. A must have for all Elgar fans!!!!

The 'Enigma' Variations will suprise you with their tempo. The sound quality (from 1926) is less impressive than the concerto, but still good. A great pairing for an exceptional CD.

Major Orchestras, Major Conductor, Major Power!.......2004-06-16

I own multiple recordings of most of the works on Georg Solti's Thunder & Lightning, but I always hold this collection as my reference. Not only with his beloved Chicago Symphony Orchestra, but several other world class ensembles, the Maestro shows his monumental interperative talents to make old warhorses sound as if we've never heard them before. He could inspire an orchestra to "open the heavens or open a flower" with his baton. His presence is missed, but his work is forever.

Thunder and Lightning.......2004-02-22

If you wish to relax using this CD set after work, you are buying the wrong album. But, if you MUST drive between one and six in the morning, this set, by repeating all just once, can keep you awake on the road, however boring it is. Trust me, TRUST SOLTI!

Wonderful.......2002-05-23

Solti shows here why he is one of the best interpreters of classical music. while conducting Wagner is his best work, here he shows that he can interpret well just about any composer. also, in this 2-disc set, there is a nice wide range of music, so for those who are just getting into classical music, this is a good place to start.

This collection is great fun. I can't imagine a better way to drive home from work on a Fri afternoon than listening to Solti's "Thunder and Lightning" LOUD on an excellent car stereo. Order and ENJOY!!:)

A wonderful collection of Solti's intensity and drive in this music. He is at his best here and how nice to hear a variety of orchestras. Good "sampler" for future purchases.

Rimsky-Korsakov is universally acknowledged as a great master of the orchestra. He even wrote a textbook on the subject consisting entirely of examples from his own music! He needed some sort of pictorial or literary stimulus to really get his imagination going, however. His "abstract pieces," like Symphonies No. 1 and 3, are comparative failures specifically because he believed that symphonic thought was incompatible with orchestral brilliance (he wasn't the only Romantic composer to succumb to that fallacy). So all of his best music is either obviously illustrative, or taken from one of his colorful "fairy tale" operas. This two-disc set gives you an excellent selection of works of both types at a great price. --David Hurwitz

De Rimsky-Korsakov escuchar el Capricho espagnol, la obertura para la Pascua Rusa, el vuelo del moscardon y otras de sus obras son cosa de todo los dias, pero unir a ellos la sinfonia Nº2 Antar, la bellisima Dama de las nieves, la exquisita Sadko o la sublime Noche de Mayo es genial y todos en un Cd grandioso.
Son interpretaciones geniales con espiritu ruso, con animo universal, con fuerza con sublimidad con fervor si se quiere y de esplendida forma, la Sinfonica de Rotterdam suena genial y David Zimann se esmera en asombrarnos con obras comunes y otras no tanto, que lograran nuestra grata atencion.
Donde disminuye el puntaje y el gran logro de Zimann como siempre es en las comparaciones, el capricho español mas notable y recomendado es el de Ormandy, al igual que la Gran Pascua Rusa (de la que Järvi tambien tiene una gran version), para la Sinfonia Antar nadie mejor que Evgevni Svetlanov con la Orquesta del Estado Ruso.
De lo demas una gran coleccion en un CD de coleccion.

Excellent Recordings of Rimsky-Korsakov's Best Music.......2004-05-26

This two-CD set contains excellent recordings of Rimsky-Korsakov's best orchestral works (aside from Scheherazade, which they assume you already have) in demonstration-quality digital sound. The Cappricio Espagnole is probably the best recording I've ever heard of this work, with perfect tempos and a colorful orchestral pallette. The sound quality here is really outstanding. The May Night Overture and Sadko are done very well--exciting and colorful--and the Snow Maiden excerps are very well played. The Tsar Sultan Suite is very menacing and atmospheric--Zinman's conducting is flawless. The Golden Cockrel is very exotic and colorful, with just the right tempos(unlike Jarvi) and superb sound. The Antar is a very fine performance, if not the best one out there(try Kees Bakel and Malaysian PO). Although I understand what the customer who said it's the worse performance ever didn't like, I still respectfully disagree. Although Zinman does rush through the second and third movements, they still sound exciting and the Rotterdam Philharmonic are in top form throughout. The outer movements fare much better. The Russian Eater Overture is one of the best out there, probably second only to Spano/Atlanta(better than Zinman's Baltimore performance). Overall, this CD set is a must own for those looking for great performances of RK's best orchestral music.

A little stiff, but with some great aspects.......2001-03-28

The interpretations are a bit thick, and the conducting is a little distasteful. Its one of the worst performances of Antar I've ever heard. The third movement is moved so quickly and without any sense of majesty, and the second movement gives no sense of anticipation -- there's no buildup or satisfying apex. Overall, I think it is performed here as an ordinary symphony, ignoring the fact that Antar is actually a series of tone poems.

A few other disappointments, like a meandering "Sadko" and a few surprisingly tepid portions of "The Tsar Sultan."

I do think, however, that Capriccio Espagnol is performed very well, with great attention spent on percussion (great percussion pervails throughout both discs). The Russian Easter Overture is played with careful attention to its cultural origins and rates among the better performances I've heard. And Le Coq D'Or is overall pretty decent.

I would recommend this one to anyone who isn't offended by lukewarm performances of Rimsky, and is who is just looking for a collection of his orchestral works for less-involved purposes.

It is basically the only cd pack that I am happy with that features Rimsky-Korsakov's suites on.

Fascinating Mozart.......2007-01-04

This is one of several collections with two famous performers.
They blend very well together. Haebler seems to be the leader of the two.
Her performance is well articulated and convincing.
It is interesting to listen to this interpretation, especially after
the last Mozart jubilee. Everybody has been doing his music and there has been a search for the "real Mozart".
He has once again escaped everybody. But in this now "historic" performance with Haebler and Szeryng he seems to be quite close.
The musicality is on a very high level and their approach is very
earnest.
Although I prefer Lili Kraus and Szymon Goldberg in these works,
the sound here is much better and Haebler has just as much personality
in her interpretation as Kraus on hers. And they are quite different
from each other.
Summing up, I recommend the recording for everybody who has interest
in these sonatas.

The Mature Violin Sonatas.......2005-06-01

Philips has selected the best 16 of Mozart's 35 sonatas for piano and violin on four CD's (Vol. 1, 2). So, does one need to hear all 35 sonatas? Probably not as the early ones (1-16) were written by a "tween" Mozart for their early prodigy tours and are not near the stature of those written 10 years later and beyond. The ealier mature works on "Violin Sonatas I" tend to possess that Mozart innocence and lyricism so fitting for the parlor. The later works here on Violin Sonatas Vol. 2 - like most of any composer's later works - tend to be the most mature, the most perfect of form, the richest and most imaginative. A quote from 'The Compleat Mozart' gives a useful historical perspective on these later violin sonatas:

"K.379, 376, 377 and 380 are works of great historic significance: they are the first important chamber works Mozart wrote after his decision to stay in Vienna as a free artist and constitute his visiting card as a composer. The grand style of 'Idomeneo' is still ringing in them and other moments foreshadow `The Abduction from the Seraglio ... They are rich in new ideas, showing traces of musical genius ... very brilliant, and well suited to the instrument. Moreover, the violin accompaniment is so ingeniously combined with the piano ... and thus these sonatas demand a violinist an accomplished as the pianist."

These sonatas are magnificantly played by Szeryng and Haebler - a partnership that was renowned for its seamless musicianship. Music author David Dubal says of the Austrian pianist Ingrid Haebler: "An artist who plays with polish and taste. Her Mozart is especially admired for these qualities. Her playing has refinement and geniality, as well as a very special tone quality." Agreed. Equally, the emaculate playing of Polish violinist, Henrynk Szeryng, finds just the right shape, line and nuance for this music to elicit that 18th-century parlor charm.

I heard an interesting story about Szeryng's choice of instruments that some might find interesting: "Many famous virtuoso violinists have chosen to play Guarnerius rather than Stradivarius violins, a fact not generally known to the public. At one time Polish virtuoso Henryk Szeryng owned two Stradivarius violins and one Guarnerius. Eventually, he donated the two Strads to worthy musical institutions and kept only the Guarnerius. Szeryng treasured his Guarnerius so much that, when he travelled, he bought two seats -- one for himself and one for his Guarnerius."

It is hard to fault much in the wonderful Philips DUO set when the music is so well performed and so typically pleasant and galante Mozart. ABout the only negative thing might be the sound quality - which is clean but lacks a truly satisfying fullness and richness of tone that are found in newer recordings (like Hahn, Steinberg)... but nothing to discourage enjoyment. Penguin Guide gave this set a top 3-star rating as well as listing it as one of their "Recommended Recordings" (for building a collection). Hard to say which to get first - Vol. 1 or 2 - both are recommended and both contain important works. Also, consider the legendary recordings by Arthur Grumiaux or the newer ones Hilary Hahn/Natalie Zhu for this genre if you are comparing choices.

the Musical Version of 1001 Nights.......2003-02-26

The best Mozart Sonatas so far.

This is a musical version of 1001 Nights of the most civilised kind: no one could possibly grow tired of them.

Perlman once said he had problem of finding whom the violinist is though he is good. Quite right, it's because when Szeryng played Mozart, he completely captured the essense of Mozart as demonstrated here, and when he played Bach, even Hilary Hahn said he had got everything she is aiming at.

It's nothing like the later players, always exhibiting themselves, their sentimentality or else "technique" ( in the narrow sense) rather than serving the composer or the violin. Szeryng spoke more languages than Arthur Rubinstein, 7 altogether. Such is his supreme power of self-abnegation, linguistically and musically alike. As such it's quite beyond those egoists who could only speak one language and would complain that the rest of the world don't do the same.

These CDs triggered me to buy Szeryng/Haebler's Beethoven Sonatas. Not quite as good. My preliminary impression : Haebler's Beethoven isn't quite as good. I also tried Szeryng/Rubinstein, but I have problems at times, not always, in taking relish on Rubinstein. Rubinstein did grow with age, but the marks of self-inflicted wastage were always there. Who knows when he is on and when he is not. More often than not, what we we get is a mixed bag.

This is indeed a good representation of music from England and Spain and it is a bargain to get 2 cds for this price, CD 1 includes music by:William Byrd,Elway Bevin,Antonio de Cabezon,Hernando de Cabezon,Esteban Daza,Miguel de Fuenllana,Lopez,Diego Ortiz, Robert Parson,Picforth,Robert White. But please know that Michael Chance sings only 6 songs on CDl and none on CD 2. And only 4 of the 6 are "new", so know that before you purchase this disc if you are buying it only to hear him. Of course, the 4 new songs are quite interesting and I probably would buy it at this price to get them in my collection. The new songs are: "In Angel's Weed; "Pour Down,You pow'rs divine";"Morenica dame"; and "Quiente hizo". The 2 known songs (to Me) "Rejoice unto the Lord" and "
come to me Grief Forever". CD 2 includes music by: John Bull,William Byrd,John Dowland,Alfonso Holborne, William Lawes. The tunes that Chance sings are very attractive and he sings them with his usual expertise. Moreover, Fretwork is a talented experienced performing group, so when you combine them with the "golden" voice of Michael Chance, you know you have good listening in store.

Excellent and Pleasurable.......2001-01-31

This album contains the work of a great many composers, mostly from Spain and England, spanning several genres and two musical periods. For all that, the works complement one another extremely well, there are no jarring transitions, and nothing sticks out unpleasantly. The liner notes leave much to be desired, however. Still, this 2-disc set is a bargain. Fretwork is a masterful ensemble and all of the pieces are skillfully performed. You won't be disappointed by this pleasant listen.

Strange interpretation of "classical".......2005-01-17

I bought this CD because it contained some songs I was having a hard time finding elsewhere, such as Passo pel prat, Chants d'Auvergne sung by Fredrica Von Stade. However, some of the songs on this CD do not seem to belong e.g. all three songs by John Williams, Mack the Knife, Barbra Streisand, and the Psycho Murder Theme for starters, and many more.

I gave the CD 4 stars only because I was happy that I was able to find a few somewhat rare tracks.

An interesting mix..........2002-05-18

This is a sampler in the truest meaning of the word. I bought this 4 CD work primarly for two tracks, but also because I was interested to see what else was out there without investing a fortune in CD's I wouldn't like! I was surprised by the wide diversity of music ranging from true classical and jazz to contemporary compositions and interpretations.

While I find some tracks divine (Williams's _Schindler's List_), I find other tracks unsettling (_Beau Soir_ performed by Barbra Streisand). But when you are trying to span 100 years of music, you will (and should) encounter all tastes and styles. Overall, I really enjoy listening to this set. My only regret is that I don't have a CD changer...

An exceptional set. The history of music making of the 20th century in 4 CDs. Even from the first track with Giuseppe Campanari and Charles Adams Prince you can see that people put much time in collecting the best interpretations and putting together an amazing collection. Other highlights include the "Mack The Knife" with Lotte Lenya, the Bachiana Brasileiras, The Fanfare For The Common Man with LSO conducted by the composer and so many more. An undespiuted *****
