Neither Circus nor Spectacular, but it is Karl King........2006-10-15
Having played a number of times under Karl King, I had great expectations for this CD. Alas, it was not to be. The music is there, the musicians play all the right notes and the conductor keeps time. The recording is only mediocre, of Laserlight quality, and the performance is not what I expected from what they call a "Circus Band." Indeed, the liner notes state that the band is mostly students and professionals from the Philadelphia area. In other words, a "pick up" band. And the conductor seems to have no circus experience only small town symphony experience (from the puffery in the liner notes). From listening, it would appear that he has never even heard a real circus band. Both conductor and band would not last a day at a real circus. I do have a suspicion, however, that the musicians would do better under a better conductor.
Now, if they called themselves a concert band, that would be accurate and fair, and would not have dashed my hopes, as they are OK as a concert band. But just OK.
Of course, a concert band can indeed generate all the excitement of a bona fide circus band, as Frederick Fennell so aptly demonstrated on his Mercury recordings.
Now, if you want real circus music played by a real circus band, get a Merle Evans recording.
However, having said all that, I will keep the album, as I have always been a Karl King fan, and it is fine music decently played by an OK concert band.
Great circus music.......2005-08-12
I needed some circus music to promote a fundraiser our Lion's club was having (a circus). I got the CD on time and it sounded great. I could not find this type of music anywhere else. Thanks.
Good music, mediocre playing.......2001-11-19
It was indeed exciting to find so many of Karl King's marches on one disc. The band's playing, however leaves a lot to be desired, as does the sound quality of the disc. The balance is poor, with a very annoying tenor sax playing loud and out-of-tune on every cut. Buy this if you are a march collector (which I am), but I do not recommend it for its entertainment value. Get the "Screamers" disc by Fennell and Eastman for a far superior set of circus marches with great playing and sound.
Review of Circus Spectacular.......2000-12-07
Certainly the best thing about this CD is that there are many of Karl King's marches that have probably never been recorded previously, which is curious, since some of them rank with his best. The curious thing about this CD, on the other hand, is that it is supposedly a circus album, but only a few marches were actually written for the "big top". This band is not the best I have heard - recommend listening with headphones, to get a much clearer, less muddled sound. King was only kind of a contemporary of Sousa, having lived 35-40 years later. He actually published more marches than Sousa, and generally wrote in a style that was "softer" than the March King. Sousa wrote mostly military-style marches (better than anyone else ever has, of course), whereas King wrote many military as well as circus marches, and marches in a simpler style, suitable for school bands.
Circus Spectacular.......2000-08-12
This recording of music by Karl King is absolutely splendid -it contains 28 tracks most of which I have certainly not heard before - I particularly liked the tempos of the marches - not too quick but just right - the band is good (although I had never heard of them) - I came across this recording by chance and I'm glad I did - highly recommended

Album Description
Through many songs and many bands, Somehow Hollow has finally settled down and is ready to rock the masses. They formed in the summer of 2000, with a line-up of three - Mike Casarin, Kent Abbott, and Drew Clark, in the lovely Shakespearean city of Stratford, Ontario, Canada. A fourth member, Brad Casarin, was added later in the year. Although touring heavily with the internationally recognized Grade, his main band at the time, Brad managed to find time to write and record the group's first album. The self-titled debut was released in May 2001 on the Toronto based label, East End Industries. After a couple of years playing houses, garages, and small punk clubs, their driving, slightly metallic, melodic punk sound was born and is reflected on this recording. The Candaian based band of melodic, rock-n-roll renegades is ready to bring forth their emotional vision of friendship and unity. If you are looking for aggressively melodic riff-heavy rock, this is the album you want to start the year with.
Customer Reviews:
Incredible.......2004-02-12
This album is killer from start to finish. Most of the reviews I read elsewhere ripped on the singer and the album itself got a bad rep but this was one of my favorite albums of 2003. The music on this CD is nothing short of amazing and the singers voice is not the greatest but it is still really good. If you like punk rock then check this out, its not the hardest or fastest punk out there but it is damn good. Highlights of this cd are...basically every song. It is really that good, go buy it.
for ex-grade, these guys are pretty terrible........2003-10-09
kyle bishop was where all the talent was in the band, anyway. check out the swarm.
Somehow Hollow Is Awsome.......2003-04-12
Somehow hollow is a kick[en] canadian band. Featuring ex-members of Grade ( another dope band ). This is way less hardcore than grade, but still has awsome melodic guitar riffs and melodies. If you like Taking Back Sunday or The Movielife, you will love these guys!
Keep on Rocking in the Free World.......2003-01-29
From the ashes of Grade rises the formerly founded Somehow Hollow, who have raw passion, grit and sincere sensitivity which is the foundation of this album. The guitar work is impeccable and the singing is definately unique and heartfelt. Sounds blend heavy guitar riffs with band influences like MXPX, Saves the Day and The Getup Kids. I suggest reading the lyrics then blasting this CD on your stereo and singing along as loud as you can. It is a feel good album. Go buy it.

10 TRACKS
Customer Reviews:
It's Mel Tillis!.......2007-05-11
Amazon does not provide the name of the Artist for this title. I am confirming that it is MEL TILLIS. The 10 tracks include the title track, "Faded Blue," "Almost Like You Never Went Away," "No One to Talk To," "He Drove Her out of His Mind," "Matter of Wine," "Small Change," "Bed of Roses," "Slow Nights" and Take a Look at Me."
"Bed of Roses" is NOT the Statler Brothers' hit of almost the same name. Why "almost?" The Statler Brothers 1970 classic has, when listed properly, an apostrophe in the final word of the title. You knew that, but it is frustrating when there is no information whatever on the CD or in the liner notes. I mean NOTHING save the ten titles I have shared with you. No dates. No songwriting or publishing credits. No credits for the musicians, producers, engineers. Not even the thank-you for God for taking time from Her busy schedule to get this one onto the shelves. From the picture on the product (Mel's wearing a ridiculous looking sailor's hat and--brace yourselves--his little Branson jacket) I would put the vintage of this within recent years--say the last decade.
The songs are mediocre, right in step with most of Nashville's output so far in this millenium. The singer, however, is MEL TILLIS, which makes this a better value than most of the junk "Music City" is flinging at us. It helps to remember that the Twang Town Taliban is not in the Country Music business. They are in the business of providing programming software to order for radio stations which call themselves "country" under cover of the First Amendment. Austin, Texas musicians are in the country music business or, more specifically, the business of providing dance music to country music fans.
Mel Tillis would be nuts to leave Branson and the $1 million a month income, rivaling that of e-commerce twenty-five year olds, so he'll sing the old hits for the busloads of tourists who make that trek and fill his theater twice a day and occasionally lob something like this into the commercial mix, just in case. I'm glad he's finally getting to make a lot of money from his talent, but I'm less than pleased with myself for buying this record.
