Good and Bad.......2004-11-01
This album certainly has some excellently-written lyrics, most of which tell a story of sorts (e. g. "Let It Burn", where the singer witnesses his neighbour's house going down in flames). Also, the choice of musicians is primo. However, Vince Wilcox and Don Pardoe (no relation to SNL's Don Pardo) both have thin, flat voices, and usually convey little emotion. (Compare their version of "I Think About You" to Collin Raye's. Also of note is that W&P's version seems to be in a lower key.) I think their singing works best on "Let It Burn", "On a Ring and a Prayer" and "The Best Tears of our Lives".
Furthermore, many of the melodies are almost ridiculously repetitive and flat; this is especially noticeable on "Let it Burn", whose verses consist of the same handful of notes four times in a row.
"On a Ring and a Prayer" is an upbeat piece with a more varied melody than the rest of the songs. "The Best Tears of Our Lives" kinda wore off on me after a while. The rest of the songs are pretty good.
If I were to grade on just the lyrics, this would get 4 1/2 stars, because these are some of the finest lyrics I've ever seen. However, if I were to grade on just the sound, this album would get 1 1/2 stars. Average that out, and you get 3 stars.
