Album Description

Few artists can not only survive the test of time, but flourish with the passing of years. For most, longevity is an elusive goal only attained by such as icons as George Jones, Ray Price or Hank Williams-great singers with extraordinary songs. Then there's that intangible ingredient called talent, that element of delivery combined with magic that actually endures what can be a fickle public. Steve Wariner is one of those rare gems. Since his arrival on the country music scene in the late '70s, Wariner's blend of pop flavored country along with his velvety vocals, has earned him a consistency enjoyed only by few, while amassing hit upon hit. Although country purists tend to criticize such non-traditional music, Wariner's more contemporary offerings arguably helped broaden country's listening audience in the '80s.

This package--Steve Wariner--Ultimate Collection--spans 11 years, from his first No.1 record, "All Roads Lead to You," until the early '90s when he experienced a shift in direction and sales before his more recent resurgence of popularity. The collection encompasses a body of work that displays Wariner's growth as a total artist-vocally, instrumentally and as a songwriter-containing 21 hits, an amazing number for any artist, but particularly one who fell into singing by accident.

4 out of 5 stars Another song that's missing from the "Ultimate Collection":.......2006-10-01

In addition to the remarks from some about songs that should have been included with this CD, it would have been more appealing to me if it had also included "Kansas City Lights".

1 out of 5 stars Why no "Why Goodbye"?.......2006-07-10

Any collection of Steve Wariner's hits that does not include the song "Why Goodbye" should not be considered "ultimate" by any stretch of the imagination. I was working as a progressive country music DJ when this soung was released back in the 80s, and from that day to this,I consider it to be one of the catchiest and most melodic and memorable country/pop songs ever written and performed. This collection showcases Steve's more country oriented side, which really sells him short. "Why Goodbye" should be at the top of everyone's list of all-time favorite Steve Wariner songs, and I just don't understand why is has been virtually forgotten. It also just mey be the best vocal performance of his career.

5 out of 5 stars Steve Wariner.......2006-03-14

Listening to these songs brought back some memories for me! I love to hear this man sing. Thanks to Yahoo Music for "jogging" my memory!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Spans Three Eras in His Career .......2005-10-23

This collection contains Steve's hits from the periods in his career - RCA in the early 1980's, MCA in the mid 1980's to early 1990's, and 1990's Arista. It does not contain his late 1990's stint at Capitol but considering how many hits Steve has had you have to stop somewhere. Steve is definately one of the very best pop-flavored male country vocalists of them all, kind of a latterday Jim Reeves. This album contains many number ones and I believe most of them went top ten. So if you like 80's and 90's country music, a great singer and great songs, Steve Wariner is your guy and this is your CD.

5 out of 5 stars Steve Wariner's Ultimate Collection.......2005-08-03

Steve Wariner's Ultimate Collection contains the best of his songs and it puts me in such a good mood. It is romantic music at its best and I think anyone who is a Steve Wariner fan will really like this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Steve made a great start on Capitol.......2005-08-30

After a long and successful career on other labels, it seemed at one point during the nineties that Steve's hit-making days were finished. Steve proved that this was not so by securing a contract with Capitol and recording three excellent albums of original material for them of which this was the first.

The title track, a fun duet with Garth Brooks, was no doubt expected to be the big hit from the album and it certainly opens the album in great style. However, it is the second track (Holes in the floor of heaven) that really caught the public imagination. This is a very sad death song of a type that is comparatively rare these days. Such songs were far commoner in the sixties - in pop music as well as country music.

Another outstanding track is the second duet on the album (What if it's you), this one being with Anita Cochran who also wrote the song. This duet also appeared on her debut album (Back to you).

Quite apart from the three tracks already mentioned, this album contains many other great songs including I don't know how to fix it, Big old empty house, Smoke from an old flame and A six pack to go.

This is an outstanding album by a man with one of the finest voices in country music.

5 out of 5 stars Special Reasons.......2005-08-09

This cd contains a special song for our family. "Holes in the Floor of Heaven" was my grandmother's favorite song, so when she passed away in september 2004 we played it at her funeral. So we have bought multiple copies of this cd so that all of our family can share in the memories.

Besides this particular song there are lots of good songs on the cd. I listen to it regularly.

3 out of 5 stars Steve, go back to your country roots please.......2004-08-26

Steve Wariner shows none of his superior talent on this album as he has with previous hits such as "All Roads Lead to You" and "You Can Dream of Me." Instead, we get smarmy, unbearably syrup like the insipid "Holes in the Floor of Heaven." The fact that songs like this win awards isn't a clue that the song is good: just how out of touch the C&W industry truly is to the fans. Nothing on this album is really memorable or will have the staying power of his prior hits. Buy Steve's Ultimate Collection instead.

5 out of 5 stars Five Stars???????? Yup.......2004-05-07

How in the world could anyone give a Steve Wariner cd 5 stars? They must be crazy to think that the "Poor Man's Vince Gill" could ever make a good recording.

I'll tell you how I can give it 5 stars. It has 10 songs that fit perfectly with one another.

It has proven songs like "Tips of My Fingers" that was simmingly written for Steve Wariner.

It also has original songs like "Leave Him Out of This" that has more passion and feeling than almost any song recorded in the 1990's.

It has great picking songs like "Crash Course in the Blues" which shows how complete of a perfomer Wariner is.

And is also has all those songs that weren't singles that are just as good as the ones released as singles.

And something that I never overlook, and can make or break an album, it has awesome graphics. I can picture the cover Lp sized in the front window of the Ernest Tubb record shop in 1965.

Complete package. Essential recording.

5 out of 5 stars Am I the only one who thinks this is GREAT music?.......2002-08-31

I rarely listen to country music anymore. It's either too hokey, insincere or not relevant to me. But this disc smells as sweet as a wood fire on a cold December night. Simple and honest is the best description I can give. This ranks way up on my list of "favorite" discs. A list very short on country performers.

3 out of 5 stars ONE good song........2001-06-19

This CD only wins kudos because of "A Woman Loves" which is a song I dearly love.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best music to be found!.......1999-08-04

Of all the country music I own, this is my most favorite collection of songs. Stranded on a tropical island, this would be the CD. Never get tired of the variety, incredible voice, and superb talent of Mr. Steve Wariner.

5 out of 5 stars This is in my opinion,Steve Wariners best album.......1999-07-14

I have been listening to Steve Wariners music for the better part of 20 years now.The first "country" act I ever saw live was him.He is basically responsible for converting me to country.Forget the so-called "reviews" by the media, just mention a few of his songs to any country music fan,& you will get real-people reviews.I will always admire this mans talent in writing, singing, and playing that guitar,(the man CAN play).

4 out of 5 stars Steve back with another good release.......2003-04-16

Featuring superb guitar work, lush vocals and a large collection of beautiful songs, Steal Another Day is another great accomplishment by Steve Wariner. Including awesome remakes of five of his old hits, Wariner's new album shows that he still knows how to crank it out, while also keeping his tender side. A must for any Wariner fan, Steal Another day is packed full of potential hits and is altogether a very versatile album. That being said, although Steve's guitar work and musical arragements remain at the top of their class as always, his lyrics aren't quite up to par. Seemingly uninventive at times, certain lines are shoddy and predictable, and elementary compared to the charm and ingenuity of some of his other works. His lyrics seem to have faltered on this album. And while this album is definitely better than Two Teardrops, it falls (though closely) behind his previous release, Faith In You. However, Steve Wariner is an earnest, hardworking musician who has been around for many years, so he can be respectably forgiven. Other than that, Steal Another Day is one of those Steve Wariner albums that every country fan should have.

5 out of 5 stars Back for more and still pickin'!.......2003-03-17

Steve Wariner long ago proved that he knows his way around a song; he can craft a tune like no other in the business, and then sing and play it with a simple ease that makes you think ANYBODY can be a singer. Of course, that's his intention: to deliver music naturally, with the gift given unto him by the great Country Music Muse.

Er...onto the album.

STEAL ANOTHER DAY is the title. I don't reccomend stealing it, but I do suggest you buy it. This is Wariner's best in quite a while; an album of country songs, some with an edge, some nice and natural. The guitar riffs are ear-catching, the lyrics are simple and down to the point--unless they're needed otherwise, in which case Wariner delivers--and the voice is, of course, sublime. Steal away to STEAL ANOTHER DAY.

And onto the songs.

"Kiss Me Anyway" has a Spanish twinge to it, while "Carmelita" is fun, fun, fun (featuring Lee Roy Parnell on slide guitar). "Snowfall on the Sand" is another "Holes in the Floor of Heaven" (I don't know if it's better, I guess that's your preference) while "Ride This Rocket" is an acoustic rocker. "I Really Don't Have Anything" is a tribute to those great lovers out there; "Welcome to This World" and "I'm Your Man" are fun and wacky. "There Will Come a Day" is for anyone with a disease or disability (dedicated to Wariner's step-daughter, a diabetic), while "This Christmas Prayer" is written as an alternative to a Christmas wish; in this case, peace and love for children everywhere. "In My Heart Forever" is in remembrance of the great Chet Atkins, while "Where Did I Go Wrong" looks at a guy contemplating how the heck did she wind up with him? "The Weekend" and "Some Fools Never Learn" add a mournful spin on things, with "Small Town Girl" bringing in a little guilty joy. The last tune to list (did I miss any?), "You Can Dream of Me," talks about that love that's only meant to exist in dreams.

Okay, those're the songs; there's more to it than that, of course--wouldn't want to ruin everything for you. Because you're gonna want to buy this album; trust me on this. I'm one satisfied customer, having picked up this CD. If you're a Steve Wariner fan, you know you're in for a treat; if you're new to the game, what better place to start than his latest CD (with a few oldies-but-goodies thrown into the sixteen tracks just for good measure). STEAL ANOTHER DAY is another great CD from a great artist; don't let another day pass you by. Get this one before it "steals away"....

After a string of country-pop hits in the '80s, Steve Wariner seemed to settle into a journeyman's rut until 1998's heart-tugging "Holes in the Floor of Heaven" (and its album, Burnin' the Roadhouse Down) delivered the biggest success of his career. Not surprisingly, Wariner has chosen to go with the emotional flow on this ballad-heavy follow-up. Both the title-track single and "I'm Already Taken" (a remake of his debut recording from 1978) cross the line where sentiment becomes sap, while too much of the rest is bland at best. For variety's sake, the 15 selections include a duet with Bryan White on the cornball "Talk to Her Heart," a cover of Rod Stewart's "For the First Time," and an album-closing instrumental, "The Harry Shuffle," that showcases Wariner's nimble guitar picking. --Don McLeese

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars My very first Country contact.......2000-11-10

On vacation in California, TWO TEARDROPS was my first contact with country music, which is in Germany still known as "Country and Western", but this new sound was really new for me. I didn't get this album title song out of my mind, so I bought this CD. Song after song I have to say that this kind of music would be very easy to export, but there are only limited efforts to do this. I really can't understand, why Steve Wariner is well known in the US, but absolutely unknown in Europe. I will go and buy more music of him.

5 out of 5 stars Two Teardrops . . . . Five Stars.......2000-05-15

I am an avid Steve Wariner fan, but even if I weren't, in my opinion this IS the country music album of 1999. How is it possible to follow-up a smash hit like "Holes In the Floor of Heaven"? Multi-talented Steve has answered that question with this great CD. The record is well balanced between upbeat rockers, slower ballads, throw in a couple of mid-tempo numbers and "The Harry Shuffle", an instrumental done a la Chet Atkins. Steve teams up with Bryan White on "Talk To Her Heart" and Steve's son Ryan makes his debut by playing guitar on "So Much". Look for two songs co-written by Steve & Marcus Hummon ("So Much" and "Cry No More"), who I feel is one of today's top songwriters. And the title track, written by Steve & Bill Anderson, shows Steve's songwriting skills at their best. No matter what your taste in country music is, you can't go wrong with this CD. A must have.

5 out of 5 stars His Best Album Since The 80's.......2000-02-12

Having Been a fan of "older" Steve Wariner songs such as "Kansas City Lights", "Lonely Women Make Good Lovers", "Your Memory" and "By Now" from several years ago, I didn't quite care for Steve much in the 90's with the exceptions of certain songs such as "Drivin' And Cryin" and "It Won't Be Over You". But with this album that I took a chance on buying for the hit single "Two Teardrops", hoping that it wouldn't be the only good song on the album.

Was I glad I got it! The title track only hinted at the catchy songs on this album. This has got to be the best album of Steve's career. I was really impressed with so many good songs and only a few throwaways. The other catchy tunes here are "Hands Of Time", "You Be My Everything", "I've Been In That Movie", "Talk To Her Heart", "So Much", "That's The Love For You", "Cry No More", "Since You Walked Away" and "For The First Time". As You can see this is a very good CD and worth the money.

Hopefully radio will be willing to play these hits. Steve must be one of the most talented guys in Nashville as he is the "Eddie Van Halen" of Country music with his guitar playing, he can write hit songs and he can sing with the best of them. You won't see Steve disappearing anytime soon.

4 out of 5 stars Two tear drop.......2000-01-24

Steve is very good at entertaning people, and he is a very good writer and singer, which is very rare to find.keep the good work up steve, you dont need Garth or nobodyto help you achieve you goal.

5 out of 5 stars The most underated country star in the business..........2000-01-24

Steve Wariner is the most underated and under appreciated star in country music today. He has been making consistently great music for more than 20 years now. I have every album he has ever made and my favorites are Two Teardrops, I Am Ready and Drive. He is a phenomenal guitar player (he used to be a studio musician) and a great singer (even though he says he's not a great singer). I am a singer and I love to sing his music. No wonder Bryan White mentored with Steve. You can keep Alan Jackson, George Strait, Kenny Chesney and the rest of those hokey wanna-be's. Steve Wariner is the real thing. He is the best country has to offer!

5 out of 5 stars And "The Hits" Keep Comin'.......2003-07-17

Steve Wariner, one of country's best, has been making great music for over 20 years now. And there has been numerous Greatest Hits packages over the years, some recently. Well, chalk another one up. This one, entitled "Hits Collection" is not to be confused with "The Hits" from MCA; and it showcases Steve's Capitol output. If you have the three Capitol albums, you don't need to add this because no "extras" are included. This CD is best recommended for those who usually buy Greatest Hits collections only, or for those who want "Holes in the Floor of Heaven" and "Two Teardrops" on the same disc. The music is great, and gets the 5 stars, but my only other gripe besides no rare or unreleased songs, is why only 11 songs? For example, where's "Road Trippin'", "You Be My Everything" or "Cry No More", or the Grammy nominated instrumental "The Harry Shuffle"? You get the idea. As another reviewer mentioned, and I agree 100%, do yourself a favor and buy all 3 Capitol CDs. After that, be sure to check out his latest, "Steal Another Day", because as I've said, he's one of country's best!

5 out of 5 stars Best of Wariner's Capitol Recordings.......2003-05-08

With the triple threat of his mellow tenor, deft guitar playing, and immense songwriting skills, Steve Wariner has been a steady country hitmaker for over two decades. Industry respect, however, wasn't really forthcoming until his three-album tenure on Capitol Records from 1998-2000.

The catalyst for this recognition was Wariner's 1998 single "Holes In The Floor Of Heaven," a Country Music Association winner for single and song of the year. This tearjerking ballad led to a series of similar vignettes, like "Two Teardrops" and "I'm Already Taken" that were also well-received.

Duets also figured prominently during Wariner's Capitol years. Tradeoffs with Garth Brooks on the riproaring "Katie Wants A Fast One" and "Burnin' The Roadhouse Down" as well as the jazzy "Been There" with Clint Black endeared Wariner to a younger audience and provided a nice counterpoint to the ballad hits. Best of the lot is "What If I Said," Wariner's poignant, award-winning collaboration with Anita Cochran.

There are no rare or unreleased tracks included on this eleven-track set (Wariner's scorching "Get Back" from the Beatles' tribute album Come Together would have been a welcome addition). For those without his Capitol albums, however, The Hits Collection is a compact overview of a country music vet at his songwriting peak. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great Mix of Songs ...........2003-04-07

I guess Capitol Records decided they needed to release this to piggy back on Steves latest album "Steal Another Day" released on his OWN label!

This is a nice mix of songs from Steve's 3 Capitol CDs released between 1998-2000. Burnin' The Roadhouse Down (98'), Two Teardrops (99') & Faith In You (2000). If you don't own those CDs I'd recommend buying them over this hits compilation - because there is some fine song writing that never saw the light of day on radio or elsewhere and your truly missing out on some great Wariner tunes, vocals & guitar playing!

The packaging on this cd is weak. (Very disappointing Capitol Art dept.) A few repeat pics from the Faith In You Photo shoot, no lyrics, no liner notes..not even musician credits. Pretty lame & an obvious attempt to ca$h in.

The music is killer & that's all that really counts so it still gets my 5 stars..but if you already have the capitol cds, unless you collect them all just for fun.. there is no real pull here. A bonus track would have been nice.

*Someday I will get my Steve Box Set complete with live stuff, outakes, demos, the songs that are registered at BMI that have yet to surface.... hint 4... Mr. SelecTone Records:-)

5 out of 5 stars Best collection of Steve Wariner.......2006-07-10

This is by far the best collection of Steve Wariner's hits available, simply for the reason that it is the only one which contains the great hit song "Why Goodbye", which is absolutely the best country/pop song ever written or performed, and showcases the best vocal performance of Steve's career. Including the songs "Kansas City Lights" and "All Roads Lead to You" doesn't hurt either. You will hear more of the "pop" side of Steve's talent on this CD, which in my opinion, is the best side.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT.......2003-08-01

What a surprise!!! I hate country musik and would never ever have looked at this CD. Would have been a crying shame. I am a guitar nut and this is a feast of top class guitar playing. The material ranges from country / fusion to jazz to blues and even some classical touches. Great compositions, superb playing and a very impressive list of guest artists ensures a very varied experience. If you like the guitar, you will love this

    5 out of 5 stars A picker's album.......2000-12-19

This is an album which showcases Wariner's awesome talent on the guitar. He was a picker long before he was a singer. Musicians will greatly appreciate this effort.

2 out of 5 stars Sing Steve, Sing!.......2000-06-10

Yes Steve Wariner is a masterful guitar player but it was excruciating listing to this album knowing that I wouldn't be hearing his wonderful voice (except for one song). I love Steve Wariner as a music talent and he should never put out an album again unless he plans to sing too. I have to admit that many of the instumentals are soothing but it just wasn't the same without him singing.
