A rocking country masterpiece.......2004-02-08
This, from 1981, is one of Hank's finest albums, demonstrating what good, rocking country music is all about. Hank wrote the first five songs here including Dixie on my mind and Texas women, the two big hits and Ain't much more, a bluesy country song reminiscent of the kind of song that Jimmie Rodgers used to sing fifty years earlier, although Hank wrote it and recorded it in his own style.
Rambling man is one of his father's many classic songs. Covers of songs by the Allman Brothers (I got a right to be wrong), Merle Haggard (Footlights), Alabama (Tennessee river) and Waylon Jennings (Are you sure Hank done it this way) complete the album. Of course, Hank Junior's father didn't do it this way but nobody knows how his music would have developed had he lived longer.
If you enjoy hard rocking country music, you'll love Hank's music.

Not worth the $$ I paid...and I bought a used copy!!.......2007-04-27
I LOVE Fishbone but......Sorry folks...how can ANY true Fishbone fan give this 4 or 5 stars?!?! I would never say it sucks but after the absolute brilliance of the 3 albums that came before it...I'm tempted!!!
It always did seem like Fishbone was actually 2 bands that got together to jam and, after Kendall Jones and Chris Dowd left, I guess this is what we were left with!!!
A boring album that doesn't even have the novelty of being Punk or badly-produced.......2006-02-04
This isn't a bad album per se, but when compared by previous Fishbone albums, Chim Chim falls flat on its face. My favorite song on the album is "Alcoholic," which I later found out the band had been playing live since 1985. No wonder that was the best song. My main beef with this record is the lack of solos and instrumental breaks in the songs. Plus, there are way too many lyrics in the songs, which drag on forever. Aside from "Alcoholic," the rest of the songs are unmemorable, except for "Riot," which is a hardcore-esque throwaway song (nice way to alienate white listeners, guys). Some people here have said this album has an underproduced Punk feel, which is one of the falsest things I've ever seen written about a Fishbone album. Aside from the gimmick song "Riot," this album is a meandering pot-infused Rock and R&B album. It doesn't even have the novelty of being badly-produced.
Get any Fishbone album before this one. I suggest their self-titled debut, which is their most consistent record (all the songs are great). The rest of Fishbone's albums from In Your Face up 'til Give a Money a Brain are a mixed bag; there are a few amazing songs alongside many lackluster ones. Aside from one good song, the only badass thing Chim Chim boasts is some awesome album artwork, so when you sell this CD to a friend for a nickel, be sure to keep the inlay.
ONE MONKEY DON'T STOP NO SHOW.......2005-03-14
Comically angry, abrasive, and a bit cluttered "Fishbone" album is not without the cool whimsey, genuine social comment, and tight ska-rock-soul musical excellence that is Fishbone, a band that gets more respect than it does recognition for their powerhouse rocking assault on the ears and for staying true to their original concept; great music and something philosophical about a fishbone. I love the hard rock edge, the ska horns, and Angelo Moore's political, wild and crazy guy poet's rants and raves. Here we have Chim Chim the monkey, a metaphorical Fishbone, joyfully lashing out at social disorder, white rock and roll guys (with tvs in their ears and eyes), the pressure to hip-hop, and happy-go-lucky substance abuse; the song "Alcoholic" really sounds like a walk from the bar to the alley and back to the bar. Fishbone create a real homey, family insider feeling for the listener, one feels a part of this not hip-hop but not without bop alternative musical ensemble. Chim Chim, however, like a pet monkey gone violently beserk, needs a few sessions in anger management as some of these songs go on just a bit too long, like Angelo Moore is really, really mad about something.
CHIM CHIM'S BAD@SS REVENGE (1996).......2005-03-06
The problem with this album wasn't Fishbone's. It was mine, and mine alone. And when I finally understood and got past that problem, this album became one of the best Fishbone albums they released, despite sound quality or diminished band members.
My disappointment came first with opening up the Cd on day of release, and finding two members of the band missing, Kendall Jones and Chris Dowd. It truly made my heart sink, because Fishbone up until that point had retained all its original members for more than 10 years. And often, as is the case, when people start jumping ship, it means the boat is sinking. Well, at least that's the purported case with rats, I've never been on a ship to know if it's true. This original disappointment persuaded me to not give the album a chance, and it was a mistake that has been corrected. It took me some years to do, but I get this album now, and everything that's being said on it. It's nearest equivalent in overall message is 1991's The Reality of My Surroundings.
The 1996 Chim Chim Fishbone were: Angelo Moore (Vocals / Sax), Walter Kibby II (Vocals / Trumpet), John Bigham (Guitar - before Fishbone he was with Miles Davis), and brothers Phil Fisher `'Fish'' (Drums), and Norwood Fisher (Bass / Vocals). All songs were credited to Fishbone as a whole for the first time, apart from `Pre Nut' and `Chim Chim's Bad@ass Revenge co-written with executive producer Dallas Austin.
CHIM CHIM is an album that does have to be taken song by song, track by track, because it is worthy of any description of its contents.
Intro -
`'It's the coming of the Digital Freak Swing Vs. Ape Kills Master. If you try you will catch on''. Spoken piece announced by a security alert horn. The aim and purpose of Fishbone's Chim Chim is documented before you even hear one song.
Chim Chim's Bad@ss Revenge -
`'Running the stop sign to get your peace of mind'' - Opens like a cowboy's lament, while Angelo Moore welcomes you to the proceedings like an old, irritable drunk on stage. Which then goes into kickstart jump up thrash metal. Not as stereo as it could be, the rest of the album doesn't sound like this. Maybe that was the plan. The bass, and guitars are the equivalent of Mono, the drums are in Stereo. Why? Who knows. Chim Chim knows.
In The Cube -
`'With no question, and no testin' of no one's wits or individuality'' - The 8 minute 32 second slow Ska / Jazz / Funk workout. Points out the error of all of our ways, even when our intentions are good.
Beergut -
`'But the gut snuck up while he wasn't lookin'' - Dedicated to the beerdrinker and hellraiser. Pure chaos all the way through, but what happens at the end of this song as Fishbone becomes a musical train is quite phenomenal. That train would speed past the station so fast, you'd have no hope of catching it. `'Next stop - Corn Liquor, Wines and Spirits.''
Interlude 1 - Band Introduction and History of Fishbone to date. Jawbone solo!
Psychologically Overcast -
`'Cause the clouds are in your mind'' - Features Busta Rhymes. Should have been the single, if one ever were to be released. Funk Metal.
Alcoholic -
`'With an Eight for a Chaser'' - Dedicated to the Winos, Junkies and Drunks, opens with Reggae, slips into Punk Ska, with a brief second of Funk. Absolutely as funny as Angelo found it halfway through.
Love ... Hate -
`'Love and Hate too close for most but Revenge can make it even'' - Opens with Swing Metal Blues, into Ska. Probably the album's defining piece, certainly one of its high watermarks. 6.44m of pleasure.
Interlude 2 - Update of the Chim Chim story.
Riot -
`'Treat your customer crazy, they gonna act crazy'' - Total thrash punk. Reasons for riot.
Monkey Di©k -
`'Get me soap and water'' - Frenetic, crazy chaos blues at 90mph, until the chorus. This is the song that woke me up to how good this album actually was. I heard everything differently, and I understood what was going on, once I got past my own blockade. Includes the first use of the Theremin on a Fishbone album. Lev Sergeivitch Termen who invented it in 1917, would be proud. I think? It was used on a song called what???
Sourpuss -
`'You got that clench jaw scrunched snawz look'' - The music is actually sour. And that is very hard thing to do, actually making the music reflect the topic matter. Like sucking a lime for 7 minutes and 13 seconds. Minnie The Moocher all frowned out til it gets funked up at the end.
'Rock Star -
`'Wreck your hotel room, catch a Lear Jet, stay in debt. Manic depressed.'' - A brutal indictment on racism and ego in the music industry, and what Fishbone encountered trying to release their music to the mass. Enters like the Fishbone train that left the station in `Beergut', going 100 miles per hour.
Pre Nut -
Precursor to the final track. Da' Blues, with Soul.
Nutmeg -
`'The time is now for you to be the beast'' - Opens like a bizarre Cecil B. DeMille epic he never filmed, if he had also acknowledged there aren't many Caucasian people, if at all, hanging around ancient Mesopotamia. Twisted Snake Charming Metal. Fish, their drummer, has his say about the Nutmeg in the finale.
This album stands as a document and diary of one of America's most important bands, who mixed almost 100 years of African-American musical culture into one form, called Fishbone. Purchase the album just to say `I own a Fishbone album'.
"Chim Chim" ain't where it's at.......2004-08-26
I agree when it comes to evaluating this Fishbone album that it's their worst release compared to everything else they've done. But it honestly doesn't bother me because I know I'll always have all the Fishbone albums that I love (like the magnificent "Truth & Soul") to go back to. So what if I don't like "Chim Chim"?! Plenty of other people out there do. It's true that the quality of "Chim Chim" is on par with that of an unmixed demo or fan-made bootleg, so be extremely careful if you're looking for the same high-quality gloss found on "Truth" and "Reality of My Surroundings", because "Chim Chim" ain't where it's at.

Vintage 90's Material {4 Stars}.......2006-06-27
I was listening to Busta Rhymes' first LP (The Coming) yesterday and I came to track number nine. "Def Squad Meets Flipmode Squad" is probably one of the best songs on that album, but when I got to Mally G's verse, it struck me that I hadn't listened to his album in almost 5 years (I have over 8,000 hip hop albums, it's all but impossible to give them equal rotation). So I went over to the shelves and dusted this joint off. The first thing that came to mind was "Why didn't Jamal pan out in this rap game?" There are plenty of reasons one could use. Puffy was on the come up and killing what most of us would consider "real hip hop". There was also the west coast dominance of the early to mid 90's. Who knows, there could be plenty of reasons. I can't help but feel like whatever the reason, it couldn't have been a good one. This album has all kinds of bangers. No frills, no getting jiggy -- just Mally and the Def Squad gettin' busy over ill tracks. Tracks like "Genetic For Terror", "Live Illegal", "Unf**kwittable, and "Insane Creation" are vintage 90's/Def Squad material. I think we all recognize "Fades 'Em All" as the standout, and with good reason (the Pete Rock Remix is phat too). There are tight joints laced all throughout the album. Also, with producers like Erick Sermon, Rockwilder, Easy Mo Bee and a few others lending their talents, you know the sound is dope if you know their credentials.
As far as flaws, there are maybe one or two songs that you have to be in the mood for (well, I know I do). "Da Come Up" isn't necessarily bad, but I tend to skip it. Also, "Don't Trust No" is a song that I think this album could've done without. Basically, Jamal should've stayed away from the G-Funk sound (in my opinion). Outside of those things, I think this album is great.
Last Chance, No Breaks is vintage mid 90's hip hop. This is the stuff I was bumpin' my senior year of high school. If props translated into career longevity, Jamal would have a resume' that could rival LL Cool J. Too bad he never caught on the way he should have. Amazon has this used for $5.95. If that ain't a steal, I don't know what is. If you see this on the shelf, don't hesitate to cop it. Highly recommended.
Standout Tracks: Unf**kwittable feat. George Clinton & Passion, Genetic For Terror feat. Erick Sermon, Redman, Keith Murray, & L.O.D., Fades 'Em All (My Favorite), Live Illegal, Insane Creation feat. Redman, Keep It Real, and The Game
A true talent.......2006-05-19
Peace people, I'm a rap fan since 1992. I have a collection of about 1500 rap albums. I heard Jamal first in 1995 on a bootleg mixtape. It featured the "Fade'em all" track. After that I saw on "Yo! MTV Raps" the "Keep It Real" track! I just can't explain why an artist like Jamal with an excellent lyrical flow and wise lyrics never made in the game. "Last Chance, No Breaks" features the members of the Def Squad in their early days. The production is great showing us all that Erick Sermon is one of the biggest rap producers of all times. You can also hear Redman and Keith Murray on Jamal's album, but this only adds some flavour to it. I appreciate Jamal every time I play his debut album (and last album also) and I consider it one of the most underrated rap albums of all times. It deserves 5 stars, no doubt, go and buy it and you certainly gonna appreciate it!
very underrated album from the def squad camp.......2006-02-05
this album is from jamal aka mally g,one half of the group illegal, this album is so hot the beats are hot and his wordplay is sicker than a fever,i bought this album on ebay for $1 and change,he's very lyrical and he's very underrated,my only concern is that he had some songs with like west coast scarface (the rapper) type beats and it didn't fit the album,he's more of an east coast rapper equipped with rugged beats,he's one of the illest rappers that ive heard from philly, and its sad that this album is out of print and didn't get the buzz it deserves, the production is dark too, standout tracks are situation (produced by erick sermon and rockwilder),insane creation (production by easy mo bee,one of the best beats he made, featuring redman),fades em all(produced by redman and rockwilder, one of the illest songs of the 90's),the game (produced by redman, yes the rapper he makes hot beats he shouldve kept makin beats and still rap and its also my favorite track, and the beat is dark as hell),keep it real (produced by erick sermon, nice paino sample)and finally genetic for terror (produced by redman and rocwilder, featuring Erick Sermon , Keith Murray , L.O.D. , Redman, and they all did their thing.recommended for fans of def squad,90's hip hop, east coast hip hop.don't sleep.
JaMaL FadeS Em ALL.......2005-08-04
A really sick one from the def squad MC. Jamal's vocal energy and gritty raps always come correct! "Who the %*#@ wanna see JAMAL, I Fades em all!!"
tight.......2005-06-17
Yeah def squad were in full effect in these years. Erick came again with some tight production. Jamal has some good rhymes but the appearances made this even better I think. The whole album is good and worth buying though if you like def squad or just good east coast flavour hip hop. Anyway, hope I helped. Peace!

Little fish in a big sea (2.5/5).......2007-04-20
Illegal was the creation of hip hop superproducer Dallas Austin, attempting to cash in on the kiddie rap fad in 1993. He took two already established teenage rappers, Jamal "Mally G," a Philadelphia native and affiliate of Erick Sermon and his Def Squad collective, and Lil' Malik, a Long Beach MC and cousin of Snoop Dogg, who appeared on such g-funk classics as Doggystyle and Regulate...G Funk Era to form a duo. This idea sounds great on paper, and could have been executed to perfection. The boys are both very good rappers in their own rights, possessing nice, angry flows and speaking angrily of a world beyond their years. However, most of the time it seems that all Jamal and Malik have in common is their age, which often results in cliched raps. Basically the whole album is spent with threats and posturing in their verses, none too convincing. They do not hesitate to curse and do not allow their vocabulary to be limited by their ages, and they try to position themselves as more hardcore than their teenage peers. They throw shots at other teen acts like Kriss Kross and Da Youngsta's during the album. I find the production to be another problem. With young rappers, often times production makes or breaks the product. Groups like Da Youngsta's were provided with such great production that it overshadowed their young rhyming skills. Given Malik's pedigree, you might expect a little g-funk in the music, but there is absolutely none. Malik is not at home over these beats. There's an impressive producers list, including Dallas Austin, Erick Sermon, Diamond D, Lord Finesse, and Biz Markie, creating a decidedly east coast sound. Most of the time, though, you'll get the feeling these teenagers got these producers' throwaway beats. The beats are all very simple, repetitive, sparse, and often quite boring. Although they're good rappers, Malik and Jamal can't overcompensate for the too simplistic music, especially because they lack any real chemistry. "The Untold Truth" certainly has its moments, and the first few tracks are fine hip hop songs. They show great potential, but I'd much rather hear either MC on their own with production better suited to them. This album could have been a great product but wasn't pulled off too well.
The album begins with the best songs. On "Back in the Day" they reminisce about growing up over probably the nicest beat of the record. The pretty good "Illegal Will Rock" also has decent production with a nice hook, and the funkier single "Head or Gut" is probably the most memorable song. "Crumbsnatcher" is okay but fairly generic, improved slightly by a Diamond D beat and guest verse, and Erick Sermon laces "We Getz Buzy" with one of his standard upbeat, bass-heavy beat. "Stick 'Em Up" is absolutely forgettable, as is "Understand the Flow." "On da M.I.C." brings Lord Finesse to take control of a decent song, but "Ban de Iggity" and "Lights, Camera, Action" are nothing memorable. The album ends with the terrible "If U Want It," which is almost unbearable with a terrible chorus.
If you're expecting a g-funk album, look elsewhere, or if you're expecting something along the lines of Da Youngsta's, again look elsewhere. This is a sub-par album of fairly generic kiddie rap, with boring production and nothing to make it stand out. Most of it isn't terrible, but there's not a single memorable track on the disc. This isn't one I recommend for the collection.
These little dudes could spit........2006-12-20
Def Squad affiliate Mally G and DPG affiliate Hershey Chocolate Loc Malik dropped this near classic back in 93. They were the hardcore alternative to Kriss Kross & Another Bad Creation. Some people can't get with preteens using profanity, but for those that can - This is the dopest kiddie rap act ever.
Legalized.......2006-01-22
With much success of teen hip-hop / rap act Kris Kross, major labels were seeking other young artist to sign. Here we have Mr. Malik and Jamal also known as Illegal who's lyrics was a lot rougher and painful in comparison to their peers. The Untold Truth didn't have any restraints with it's contents as the duo challenged others acts such as Kris Kross, Da Youngsta's, Chi-Ali, Da Family for example. "Back In The Day", one of the album's classic highlights begins this album off with these 14-year old experiences that was far beyond their age over a West Coast track. Changing speeds and atmospheres, they go to a more crowd influenced track "Illegal Will Rock". Illegal proved their lyrical versatility, yet still keeping their style street on "CrumbSnatcher" featuring Diamond D. "Stick 'Em Up" and "Understand The Flow" shows a more adrenaline rush with hyper choruses and hooks for crowd involvement as they team up for that one-two swing sharing shine. The other highlight is found with the Reggae / Jamaican production by Dallas Austin on "Ban Da Iggidy" as the two attacks Das Efx style clones. The album nearly falls short of solid due to sub par production but with the help of Colin Wolfe, Diamond D. and Dallas Austin they placed a more personal touch to separate Illegal from teenage acts.
Young rappers who were tough! .......2005-04-10
Illegal's The Untold Truth from 1993 is still a classic to this day! Unlike the more clean cut Kris Kross or ABC, these young rappers cursed. But with some tough beats to match it. They never held back on all of their album and they had some funky numbers in Head or Gut, the Erick Sermon funk of We Gets Busy, Diamond D's funky Illegal Will Rock, and Lord Finesse's On The M.I.C. and its no nonsense style. They even dissed Kris Kross and ABC on We Gets Busy! And Dallas Austin and Colin Wolfe gave them a heavy number in Back in the Day, the strong opening track. This was just as hard hitting as Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg's first albums and it is hip hop in its truest form. Raw and gritty in its lyrics and music!
Hardcore Kiddie Rap??? (3.5 Stars).......2004-10-04
After the success of Kriss Kross in 1992, record companies were putting out kiddie hip hop groups at breakneck speed. Groups like Fam Lee, Da Youngstaz, Quo, and Illegal were all released during this period. I have to admit that all of their LPs sucked with the exception of this Illegal album. And of all of the previously mentioned groups, only Kriss Kross and Da Youngstaz managed to make more than two albums. I find that odd because Illegal had the best album out of all of them. The production was on point and for them to be so young they kept it hardcore as if they had been doing this for 20 years. Illegal consisted of MCs Jamal and Malik. Jamal went on to become an underrated but tight MC on the solo tip and Malik made an appearance on a single from Monica's "Miss Thang" album (Like This And Like That) in 1995 and on Warren G's "Take A Look Over Your Shoulder" LP (What We Go Through....and that song is pretty dope)in 1997 and then disappeared again only to reappear on the underground gangsta rap circuit in Cali as the MC Hershey Locc. Malik would never put out an album on his own that was as good as this group album, but Jamal's solo LP (1995's "Last Chance, No Breaks") is pretty dope. But before all of that, there was this Illegal album. Like I said before, the beats were on point and the lyrics showed a toughness beyond their years. The production was handled by a bunch of different producers. Erick Sermon, Dallas Austin, and Diamond D produce 2 tracks apiece. The rest of the production is handled by Spearhead X, E Locc, Biz Markie & Cool V, Lord Finesse, and Colin Wolfe. Most people would remember this album for its two hit singles "Head Or Gut" and "We Getz Busy" feat. Erick Sermon.
There are some missteps on the album though. "Understand The Flow" isn't a bad song, but it's almost 5 minutes and isn't necessarily good enough to hold your attention for that long. And "On Da M.I.C." features Lord Finesse but it's still boring. But for the most part, the album is pretty good.
Overall, I wouldn't say that this album is essential rap music, but it's a pretty good album that would make a solid addition to your rap collection.
Standout Tracks: Head Or Gut, Stick 'Em Up, Illegal Will Rock, We Getz Busy feat. Erick Sermon (My Favorite)

THIS CHICK IS A FIRECRACKER!!!!!.......2006-06-14
I'm talking about vocalist Jen Durkin. She's a combustion of raw feelings waiting to be unleashed whenever she touches that microphone. Think Janis Joplin times a hundred and five. This chick WILL get you up so that you can get down, no matter who or what you think you are.
The rest of the band doesn't struggle to keep up. The whole unit functions beautifully and creates the intense sound of DEEP BANANA BLACKOUT.
These guys have been around for about ten years now. They are sort of on the underground circuit, but are known widly throughout the U.S in that circuit.. they developed out of Connecticut back in the mid nineties as part of the jam scene, but have grown fan base all around since. They are definately one of the most intense jam bands around (if you even would give them such a title..)
They mix up a core of jazz and funk, with metal grinding riffs, hard pounding drums, and firery raw vocals, and what you get is a sound that doesn't quit. This live album from 1999 best displays the band at the best of their talents.
A rapidly building two disc set that just barrelrolls its way to the highly climactic last track BOOT!
Jen Durkin drives me crazy when I've seen her live. Just hearing the disc under the right circumstances comes almost as close. She's a gawddammed firecracker! POWAH!
Excellent stuff!........ LOUD!
This Album Will Get Yo' [Butt] Movin'!.......2002-04-08
This is easily one of the best albums I own. I dare anyone to listen to this and not feel like moving to the music. The horns are phenomenal and Jen Durkin's voice is both powerful and soulful. The band locks into a groove from the start and never lets go. You can tell the audience is into it and the band feeds off of their energy. Definately pick this one up if you like high energy jazz/funk.
Also, if you ever get a chance to see this band live, don't pass on the opportunity. They know how to funk up a joint and bring incredible energy to the stage. They sound pretty good too!
bananas.......2001-07-26
i witnessed the fine musical talent of DBB [...] in 1999, and was blown away in the little venue, a similar recording of the tracks on this disc are bringing flashbacks! this album is pumpin with great music, the horns are crucial and do the job right! AMAZING!!!!!
A truely jammin' band and CD!.......2001-02-19
This Cd rocks! If you like really funky, jammin' music then this cd is for you. This is one of the best pieces of music that I have bought in a long time. I do not want to categorize them as a jam band, etc...They just know how to groove. The talent in this band is very impressive. One last word: If you ever get the chance to see these guys live, it will be well worth your time! They know how to funk a place up! This Cd is a good taste of what a typical live performance is like.

Jumpin' Jeannie's Rave Reveiw.......2004-04-13
Who can sit still to the tune of Rowdy Ropes? I dare you! This CD is full of a number of songs which will become your all time favorites when working with young children. The vocalization is crisp. The tunes are lively. The children have ample time to resond to the singer's cues. This is great music to use in movement based programs as well as in the PE school arena.
After listening to the CD for the first time, I couldn't wait for my next gymnastic class to begin. The kids adored song #3, March Around Our Ropes. We performed Free Discovery during song #1, Rowdy Ropes - the tune kept the kids engaged in imaginative play. Each of their individual expressions were "correct!"
Thank you for designing a CD with such joyful, engaging, action songs.
Awesome CD!!.......2004-03-28
Best Early Childhood progressive rope jumping music I've ever heard.
Attention Homeschool families!.......2003-12-04
Here is an easy and fun way to introduce your children to jump rope skills and exercise! Get the whole family involved!
Great Kids CD.......2003-11-20
This is probably the best CD for children on the market. It is innovative, creative and educational. The words are clear, very understandable, and the music is lively to keep the attention of the children.
Anyone working with young children should have a copy of this CD in their library...it's a winner!

Anyone who enjoyed The Anthology of American Folk Music will love these Yazoo reissues. The nearly lost art of musical storytelling is preserved here in all its beautifully twisted glory. The entire set should be required listening in music classes.

A Very Joyus Record.......2003-09-13
Promoted by their inclusion on the multi-platinum soundtrack to the film Waiting to Exhale, the group moved from A&M Records to Rowdy Records in 1996 and released their second album Free. For Real's second album, Free, caught the public's eye more so then their 1994 debut, It's a Natural Thang, which generated hardly any sells due to lack of promotion. Free also contains some big names behind the mix board; Babyface (Synthesizer, Keyboards, Producer), Babyface's talented Daryl Simmons (worked with Aaliyah, After 7, Paula Abdul, Tevin Campbell, Toni Braxton, Mariah Carey, Monica, Dru Hill, Ect.), the jazzy conductor Bill Meyers, and at the time underated Mario Skeeter Winans. The first release single "Like I Do," hit no. 72 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the second released single "The Saddest Song I Ever Heard," hit no. 65 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart, again not very impressive numbers (similair to their debut album) but its their old-school vocal harmonies, passion, and convinction that make the weak material very joyus, making Free their most infectious record, surpassing their debut.
En Vogue's EV3 had this same problem.......2003-02-23
First off, all four members of For Real can sing. (I'm not sure what the ladies' names are, but I think whoever sang lead in "Easy To Love" off their first album is the best singer in my opinion.) But the problem with their sophomore album Free is that there really aren't any standout songs.
None of the songs on this album are by any means bad, but a lot of them come off too poppy-sounding. The only real exception is the first single "Like I Do", which, by the way, I forgot was so catchy. But as you listen to the rest of the album, you'll notice that many of the songs start to sound the same. By the way, does anyone know whom the man is singing in "How Can I Get Close To You"? It doesn't say anywhere on the album cover or in the liner notes.
Maybe the fact that the songs on here aren't classic-sounding is the reason why this album was lost in the shuffle of, as another reviewer said, 702s and SWVs. But I still believe the ladies of For Real are talented, and if they ever released a new album, I'd still listen to it.
For Real: Free.......2002-12-12
For Real's second album, Free, is an exceptional set of contemporary R&B that straddles the line between swingbeat and old-school vocal harmonies. Even when the songs are weak, the quintet sings with passion and conviction, making Free a joyous, infectious record. 1997 Soul Train Award Nominated for Album Of The Year by A Group, Band Or Duo, and Billboard Video Award Nominated for Best R&B/Soul Clip: "Like I Do"
HOT!!.......2002-08-25
Almost since its formation in 1993, the four female members of the R&B group For Real were caught up in a whirlwind of activity. After the release of It's a Natural Thang, its debut album, the group went on to a variety of interesting projects.
The women have appeared in Italian Vogue, in whose pages they modeled men's suits; they've gone on tour alongside Stevie Wonder; they've lent their voices to a Martin Scorsese project, the film Grace of My Heart; and they also became actresses for a time, with appearances in "Shake Rattle and Rock!" on Showtime.
The quartet also have songs on soundtracks for the films "Fled" and "Waiting to Exhale." The group's 1994 debut album, It's a Natural Thang, released by A&M, was a critical success. Its second offering, Free, was released in 1996 by Rowdy and spans the sounds of three decades, from the 1960s through the 1990s. "Like I Do," the album's first single, came about through the efforts of the group's producer, Dallas Austin. The concept he put forth was that of a black-and-white, 1960s television program, where the women wore miniskirts and Afros. The quartet is composed of Josina Elder, La Tanyia Baldwin, Necia Bray and Wendi Williams. They spent the early years, before they had a record contract, rehearsing in a Los Angeles garage, going to school and holding down a variety of jobs.
Like.?.... I Do - but only one track.......2000-02-24
The Motown pastiche "Like I Do" is a superb mid-tempo track with a haunting feel to it. The songwriter credits include Holland-Dozier-Holland so that explains the Motown sound. For me that song is worth the price of the cd. The rest ? Well, inoffensive enough but who cares when you have a gem "Like I Do".
