5 out of 5 stars CRIMINAL.......2006-12-19

I love OMD! I am from St. Louis, so this band is kinda hometown. They are from across the state but OMD are hometown to anyone in Missouri, Kansas and Arkansas. This is a brilliant collection of songs.

HOWEVER... it it absolutely CRIMINAL to not have included their most brilliant song of all. I'm talking about, You Know Like I Know. The vocals and songwriting are second to none. None of OMD, none of The Eagles and none of Poco.

Buy this CD anyway, it's great. In fact, buy everything they have ever released. I mean that in every since of the word.

THIS BAND HAS TALENT... SO MUCH TALENT... YOU CANNOT BELIEVE!

3 out of 5 stars One MAJOR missing piece .......2006-03-26

Sorry I have to break the 5-star-spell here. How you could put together a "Best of" for OMD and not include "Men from Earth"'s FLY AWAY HOME is beyond me!!! It's a moral outrage! It's worse than torture!!! It's.... okay, I'm messin'. But still, that is a terrific piece, their greatest in my mind, on all counts, and could easily have been in this package in lieu of "Jackie Blue". Never understood the popularity of that song, whimsical though it is. Anyway, do get Men From Earth just to hear, or at least to hear, FLY AWAY HOME. Country Rock at it's best.

5 out of 5 stars A good OMD compilation.......2005-09-14

The OMD have a very unique style, if I had to describe their overall style, I'd say it's like "psychadelic country". Even that isn't a complete description, but I think it comes pretty close. My personal favorite has always been "Jackie Blue", which is actually atypical of the usual OMD style. They are country with a bit of psychadelia and a little rock. This disc reflects their best hits and I'd highly recommend this to anyone who likes folk/rock and country/rock.

5 out of 5 stars juicereview.......2004-12-19

one of a kind band with a one of a kind sound. I bought this disc with no knowledge of the band whatsoever, and it has turned out to be one of the best decisions i have ever made, when it comes to music.

4 out of 5 stars Where's Black Sky???.......2004-05-26

No doubt this "would" be the definitive collection if it included the best song (along with Standing on a Rock) off the first album. Too bad...

5 out of 5 stars Oh, yeah ! This album still sounds sweet.......2007-07-07

I'm not a huge country music fan, but I gotta say this album (from six talented lads outta Springfield, MO) is some of the sweetest music you'll ever hear.

These fellas write incredible acoustic melodies with really, really interesting lyrics (the other-worldly pondering of "Spaceship Orion" or the contemplative humanity of "Within Without")

Musically?
Yeah, it rocks ("If You Wanna Get To Heaven"), and the guitar solo on "Colorado Song" has heartfelt sonics like I've heard nowhere else. One of my all-time favorite power ballads (i love the closing harmonies--it's like countrified Brian Wilson).

It's also quirky (one of the few discs I own featuring a jaw's-harp---on "Chicken Train" and its offbeat lyrics: "the laser beam / in my dream / i can't tun it on / i can't turn it off")

I even like the country-flavored songs of "Country Girl" and "Standin' On A Rock;" the mandolin on "Road To Glory" and the "revival" feel of "Beauty In The River."

This is pure Americana. It crosses from country to pop to rock and every possible hybrid beyond and in between. These gentlemen are OUTSTANDING songwriters and musicians. With GREAT harmonies, too!

Thank you, OMD, for more than 30 years of pure pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars A truly great album.......2007-01-19

I bought this CD for my father for Christmas, and found that I love it just as much as he does. It's really just great music--not strictly rock, but not country, and not quite Southern rock. The tracks are all well produced, particularly "Colorado Song." And of course, "If You Want to Get to Heaven (You Got to Raise a Little Hell)" is tons of fun. The entire album is one of my favorites--a really solid debut from a really talented group.

5 out of 5 stars First album the best.......2006-08-07

Great lyrics, fusion of hillbilly-horns-space references and redemption. It did'nt get any better than this for the Daredevils.

5 out of 5 stars Great Debut Album From A Premier Midwestern Country-Rock Band.......2006-07-07

The self-titled debut by the Ozark Mountain Daredevils is great. All of the elements of the band's sound are fully developed here, with harmonica and guitar solos in abundance, especially on the hit single "If You Wanna Get To Heaven." "Country Girl", the opener, is a heartfelt mid-tempo ballad, and "Chicken Train", an interesting novelty song, features mostly vocals and mouthbow. The Ozark Mountain Daredevils would sometimes get this good later, but they never got better.

5 out of 5 stars Love these guys........2005-07-26

Back when I was in high school and college, I loved listening to these guys and hearing their music on CD brings back great memories. They sound better than I remember them, which is is pretty darn awesome. When they played in Whitefish, Montana in 1986, we danced on a wood floor and sang along. Twenty years ago and I know they would have the same affect on me if I could hear them play again. I married a "Country Girl" and got "Back to the Country" and I still love playing harmonica along with the Daredevils in the loft of my garage.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great CD Reissue From An Underrated Band.......2007-07-03

IT'LL SHINE WHEN IT SHINES is a great CD reissue of a 1974 album by Missouri's Ozark Mountain Daredevils, a Southern rock band who weren't quite in the same league as the Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker, or the Outlaws, but who was? These guys were, nevertheless, still a great band with a unique sense of humor, and, as on the predecessor and the followup, most of the songs here feature lots of harmonica and guitar (ironically, only the big hit, "Jackie Blue", doesn't). It's great that this album has been reissued, as this band were among the worst-served by their record company. But I guess that when you support stern justice in a high profile kidnapping case (as these guys did regarding the Elizabeth Smart case), everybody's desperate to reissue your out-of-print albums on CD. If you get this CD, the self-titled debut, and THE CAR OVER THE LAKE ALBUM, you'll have everything you need by the Ozark Mountain Daredevils.

4 out of 5 stars The Ozark's, 'It'll Shine When It Shines'.......2006-03-04

This is the Ozark's brilliant 2nd album. The playing and muscianship is second to none with perfect timing. The harmonies of the group are up there with CSN&Y. For me there is only one song which I am a bit complacent about and that is Jackie Blue. It is the more populist of all the songs and at the time got a lot of air play on radio which probably explains my lack of enthusiasm for it. All the other tracks are unique and faultless. If you love this brand of country rock which is infused with bluegrass and roots derivitives, then you have to add this to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great 70s Sound.......2005-09-30

After listening to this CD, I felt like I was a teenager again. The music is still good today. I loaned it to some younger friends who enjoyed it also.

5 out of 5 stars Keep on Shining.......2003-12-24

The ozarks remain one of country rocks best kept secrets. Although the New Musical Express here in the UK described them as 'One of the finest bands of the '70's in any field' they are not well known - but they should be.

Hailing from Springfield, Missouri the band are amongst the most eclectic in rock, almost every band member wrote material, sang and played an array of instruments. Their harmonies certainly equalled the Eagles, and their sound incompassed 'down at home' bluegrass, FM rock, melodic folk country, but also more experimental arrangements such as 'Colorado Song' on their debut release.

'It'll shine' is the ozarks second offering and it's great to get it on CD. There was a trend for bands in the early 70's to get back to the country, well the ozarks never really left it recording the material at a pre Civil War farmhouse with Glynn Johns producing.

There is a real joy on this disc, of a band in tune with nature and each other playing to their strengths. Everyone will know Larry Lee's 'Jackie Blue' which was a big hit for the band and is good straight pop rock, but not entirely representative of the rest of the material, although 'Look Away' and 'tidal wave' show the band can rock.

For me it's the lighter and rootsy material that make it. 'You made it right' with its southern gospel feel, 'Lowlands' with its magnificant harmonies and the slightly zany 'EE Lawson' typical of steve Cash's work.

The disc closes with the title track leaving on a sentimental, and uplifting note. This disc is waiting to be discovered by any serious music fan - give it a try.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most underrated groups of the 70s........2003-12-17

The Ozark Mountain Daredevils were great! This is the best album/cd of one of the most underrated groups of the 1970s. They understood and played better "roots" music than others-- before it was "cool".

Product Description

This highly revered album is now available on CD for the first time ever! The package includes the original cover art, photos, and lyrics. All 10 of the original album songs are on the disc, plus 3 "bonus tracks". Many will find they have never heard these 3 songs before. All 13 tracks have been Digitally-Remastered from the Original Master Tapes.

The Ozark Mountain Daredevils united as a band in December of 1970. The group was signed to A&M Records in 1972 and, in 1973, they recorded their first self-titled album in London, England, resulting in the hit song "If You Wanna Get to Heaven". The second album, "It'll Shine When It Shines", included the song "Jackie Blue", a world-wide No. 1 hit. While at A&M Records, the band recorded eight albums resulting in two Gold Records in the US and Canada. The band subsequently signed with Columbia Records in 1981, where they recorded one album. At least three other projects followed in the '80s.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars One great piece.......2006-04-05

I may be different from others in only having a few REAL favorites by OMD, but they've always given me a high regard for the group's great creativity. One is on this album and makes it worthwhile in itself: FLY AWAY HOME. Fabulous! Probably my favorite favorite.... And yeh that cover picture is a real gem!

4 out of 5 stars FLY AWAY HOME AND GIVE THIS A SPIN.......2005-03-12

This was the first ozark lp I ever listened to having picked up a second hand import copy in the UK. At first I thought the two guys on the front cover were members of the band! Well the guys on the back looked like younger versions relaxed in jeans and t-shirts, but I knew they were popular with the critics so I gave it a try.

I loved it instantly: it was fresh and unprententious country rock and the band looked happy with life which is quite rare in the over serious world of rock. From then on I bought all their material and they become one of my favourite bands even though I am more of a classical fan thses days.

In retrospect this is not their best effort, but it is still superior to other relarses in the field. It contains a number of tracks written a few years previously such as 'fly away home', 'you know like I know' and the wonderful 'mountain range' which is sort of a re-run of Colorado Song with flutes and oboes replacing guitars.

What I particularly like here is the superb 'Red plum' with its scintillating mandolin and the evocative 'watermill' where Steve Cash gives a great vocal performance. Larry Lee's 'homemade wine' is great bluegrass/pop and shows the bands ever present sense of humour. 'Noah' although a great song is given much better treatment on the 'It's Alive' disc. 'Arroyo' - perhaps my least favourite ozarks number - is a disappointment.

The disc is a good one, but the band missed the talents of Randle Chowning who left during recording and as a reminder his gem 'better days' recorded during the 'it'll shine' sessions ends the disc on a high note.

The pictures of the band having dinner, fishing and generally looking amiable in the Missouri contryside - sadly - belong to a lost era of music.

5 out of 5 stars Classic !!.......2003-01-10

Great to see this fantastic album on CD ! This album is an absolute classic and anyone interested in good pop/country rock should buy this album. The remastering is also very well done.
I do have one little point of criticism though; the track "You know like I know" has a running time of 3 minutes and 41 seconds while my vinyl version clocks at 4 minutes and 6 seconds. This CD version has the omission of 25 reallybeautiful seconds from the middle of the song.
But despite this............go out and buy it, folks !!

Martin from Amsterdam

5 out of 5 stars a long-awaited treat.......2002-12-14

What is it that would make an album like this one of my never-will-get-tired-of-this favorites? I don't know, but I'm delighted to have it on CD at last. I'm also pleased with the bonus tracks.

On the whole, the sound is outstanding too. So far, I haven't noticed a *trace* of tape hiss--although I'm not sure if this is from very clean original tapes, or from modern signal processing (which is not necessarily without its downside). The CD has a much more bottom-heavy sound than the LP, and to my ears it seems like that's due to making instruments like the bass and drums more prominent, rather than EQ changes.

One thing they did flub, though--the fadeouts on some tracks should've been gentler. In fact, I'll go so far as to say that the end of "Homemade Wine" was botched, and I may eventually try to splice the end of the copy on my hits CD onto it to fix the abrupt end.

I remember, in the heyday of Napster, downloading some tracks from the Pickwick CD release of *Don't Look Down*, and finding some of the same abrupt endings, only worse. I was well acquainted with the LP, so it was hard not to notice. Note to New Era people: Are you listening? Please be careful about those fades!

=======

One further comment, in answer to the later reviewer: The Daredevils' CD hits collection (called The Best) has the same shortened version of You Know Like I Know. (I don't know why they would do that, unless the original master tape was seriously damaged or something.)

5 out of 5 stars It's about time!.......2002-12-08

This is my very favorite album of all-time. Incredibly, it hasn't been available until the end of 2002! The music is wonderful and the sound quality is outstanding. Bonus tracks are well-selected too. Country rock at its best!

Product Description

Here's another offering of The Ozark Mountain Daredevils' classic albums from the 1970's A&M Records Catalog. "Don t Look Down", originally released in 1977, is a part of the ongoing reissue series of the group's works by New Era, and finally after many years of demand it is available on CD for the first time as a U.S. release. By the time this album was recorded The Daredevils had undergone some personnel changes through a couple of the founding members moving on to pursue their solo careers. With their replacements, and the addition of extra players, the group had grown to 8 members, producing a varied sound and feel in the music. Thus following the path that always created interest in them. On this disc are three bonus tracks that have never before been released on any of the group s earlier albums. Fans of the group will delight in the fact that they have never heard these songs before. The music on this disc, like all of The Daredevils self-styled, rootsy material has withstood the test of time and offers the same listener appeal as it always did. With the reissue of this classic album on CD the fans, old and new, will have a chance to enjoy what has made The Ozark Mountain Daredevils one of America s most original and enduring bands.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Electric country rock at its very best.......2007-02-02

The Daredevils' misfortune was that "Don't Look Down" came out a couple of years too late. Country rock was already going out of fashion, and many of their peers faced the same destiny: too rock for rednecks, too country for rockers...

Still, the music on this album is second to none. "Don't..." is not only the band's possibly finest work ever, but it also rivals the country/southern rock masterpieces like "Desperado" (Eagles), "Hurry Sundown" (Outlaws), Toby Beau's debut, Poco's best works - and so on.

Many original Daredevils fans may have found "Don't..." sounding a lot more modern than the earlier albums. It's also fair to say that this rocks more than any of their earlier or later works. Comparison to Poco's equally mighty "Under The Gun" isn't too far-fetched, although the albums are otherwise quite different in style. Despite the modern sound and less country-oriented overall style, there are all the Daredevils elements present people have always loved, plus some quite new ingredients.

The album starts with mighty country rocker "River to the sun", one of band's all time greats. What follows is a equally stunning: "Crazy loving", "Snowbound", "Love makes the lover", "True believer"... and, of course, the ending fiddle instrumental "Stinghead". There is no single weak or even average tune on this album. Every single song here could be put into any Daredevils' "Best of..." compilation. The variety of styles is also breathtaking, from mountain country to great electric rock to beautiful acoustic ballads to... well, anywhere. Several of the tracks might well have been major hits, in luckier conditions.

The lyrics, as always in this band's case, deserve a special note: some are truly hilarious ("Backroads"), some a bit mystical ("True believer"), some just great observations of a winter's day ("Snowbound"). They all tell a story worth listening to, which is quite a rare feat of any band.

As the production is also flawless with great sound, there's really nothing to complain about. It doesn't get much better than this. Listen to yourself. The songs just get better with time...

5 out of 5 stars don't look down rocks!.......2006-10-21

Every song, every word and note, it all makes sense. Good for the soul.

5 out of 5 stars Another Ozark Classic.......2005-08-24

With Don't Look Down The Ozarks released another classic album in 1977. This is once again country/pop rock at it's very best.
Any album with a song like "Giving it all to the wind" on it is a classic. Everytime friends of mine who don't know The Ozarks hear this beautiful Larry Lee song they are completely blown away by it. The rest of the songs are far above standard country rock quality. Why these guys weren't as popular like The Eagles is still one of the great mysteries of the 70's !! There are 3 bonus tracks on this cd version: "Sweetwood" is one of them and is one of the best ballads ever to have been released by The Ozarks. Talking about quality control.......this track was never released until now !!
So once again.........go out and buy this album !!!

PS; Some more good news; The CBS album from 1980 will als be released by the good people of New Era in november 2005 !

Greetings to all Ozark fans,

5 out of 5 stars Great CD Reissue By An Underrated Band.......2007-06-29

THE CAR OVER THE LAKE ALBUM is a great CD reissue by the Ozark Mountain Daredevils, an underrated country-rock band who never got the recognition they deserved, probably because they often lacked the edge of the Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Marshall Tucker Band, and the Outlaws. However, that's not always true, because although the band were often mellow, their best known songs were actually harder-edged or very humorous. "Keep On Churning" opens this CD in a great rocking mode, and while the rest of the CD doesn't quite keep up the pace, the band prove themselves to be versatile musicians in a variety of styles, with a great sense of humor. This one, along with IT'LL SHINE WHEN IT SHINES and the self-titled debut, helps to form the essential Ozark Mountain Daredevils library.

5 out of 5 stars The Car Over The Lake Album Cover Album.......2005-03-19

They did it again with their third release, and again with David Anderle at the producer's console. There are some problems - - the two tracks which originally were the album-side openers ("Keep On Churnin'" and "Thin Ice") are perfunctory exercises in both performance and intention. And it seems they front-loaded the album a bit, as tracks two through six play like a best-of sequence: five absolutely astonishing songs, parading gloriously one after another. Randall Chowning's "Leatherwood" is peerless, a beautiful countrified paeon to the easy life, with a gorgeous harmonized chorus and an instrumental break straight out of the woods. And when Chowning teams up with Steve Cash for the harp-and-yodelling, oboe-flavored fourstep "Gypsy Forest", hey - - go on and levitate. I do, every time I hear it. Cash's and Larry Lee's airy "If I Only Knew" should have been as big a hit as was "Jackie Blue". The CAR OVER THE LAKE ALBUM flags a bit as it goes on, though. The last half isn't quite as strong as the first but again, it's relative as all the songs are at least very, very good. The original LP closed with Chowning's stately, arresting elegy "Whippoorwill", a fitting closer if ever there were one. The three bonus tracks, originally a flexi released with the LP, aren't exactly essential and mitigate the closure. They hold up well enough on their own though, so it's nice to have them on CD. The admonishing text printed on the original flexi was somewhat apologetic regarding the quality of the songs and their putatively irreverent humor, but with people like Oscar Brand running around releasing humorously peurile albums since the late '40s, why bother apologizing? These guys were on a roll.

4 out of 5 stars Relatively speaking, not their best.......2004-12-21

The ozarks had much to live up to following two superb debut releases and in some ways this is a marginally disappointing effort. It's still a rewarding disc, nicely produced and their most country tinged venture.

When it's good such as Randle Chowning's glorious 'leatherwood' and the poignant 'cobblestone mountain' it's really good. I also like 'southern cross' with brilliant Steve Cash lyrics and Larry lee's atmospheric 'from time to time'.

Sadly some of the material is a little uninspired ('Thin Ice' and ' 'Out on the Sea') and the vocal arrangements on Mr powell are a little messy. This is a shame if you consider some of the bands earlier unreleased material (as evidenced on 'log cabin sessions') which perhaps should have found the light of day.

Despite these reservations, this is still superior country rock: try listening to the guitar opening on 'whipporwill' or the folky oboe on Gypsy Forest and you are reminded just how great this band was.

If the bonus tracks from 'the little red record' (a copy of which I have) had replaced the weaker ones on the original release this would surely have been up there with 'it'll Shine when it shines'.

4 out of 5 stars The Daredevil's rock.......2004-11-03

These guys's produce music you wanna listen to in times you're tired and wanna get in the laid back mood. Personally I like the "The Ozark Mountain Daredevils [A&M]" album content better, but I like the cover of this album better. Anyway, I'd buy this album after I'dve bought "The Ozark Mountain Daredevils [A&M]".

5 out of 5 stars Jackie who?.......2004-02-12

If you are not swayed by what top 40 radio wants you to listen to, then you will not think Jackie Blue was the OMD's best song. Not remotely! As most OMD fans will attest to, it is the songs that did not get radio airplay that are their best songs. Car Over the Lake is one of my favorite albulms. These guys flawlessly combine bluegrass, country, rock, pop, etc...and their lyrics are thoughtful, not self indulgent, like much of today's (and yesterday's) music is. My favorite songs on this albulm are: 1. Out on the Sea (a romantic ballad that makes you feel as though you actually are drifting at sea on a star filled night with your loved one on your mind) 2. Gypsy Forest (this blue grassy tune sounds like a classic,,,one for the ages) 3. Whippoorwill (one of my all time favorite daredevil tunes...I love the dreamy music and mysterious nature of the song). Really, you'd be missing out if you just bought "greatest hit" releases from the OMD's. The richness of their talents is much deeper than that.

This collection of the Daredevils first 2 albums is truely a masterpiece. Very few bands can be classified in this great genre of music known only as "Country Rock"; and without a doubt these two albums are essential to any country rocker. If you enjoy the Burrito Brothers or any other country rock band you'll love the Daredevils. The 2-disc collection comes in a paper sheath with the shown cover and has a detailed booklet with pictures of the 6 main Daredevils and what they play. Also, the booklet contains a brief description of the Country Rock genre and how it all started and brought about the greatest Country Rock band ever: the "Ozark Mountain Daredevils".

Stand Out Tracks: "E.E. Lawson", "Black Sky", "You Made It Right", and "Lowlands".

Most Popular Track: "Jackie Blue", "If You Wanna Get To Heaven", "Spaceship Orion".

Get this collection if your just getting into the band; it's their start and contains their best work.

    Product Description

Another long-awaited reissue of The Ozark Mountain Daredevils' classic albums from the '70s is now available on CD for the first time ever. It's Alive was originally released in 1978 on the A&M label. This project is part of a continuing series of re-releases of the groups work, and will at last meet the demand of the long-term fans who have asked for many years that this Live album be available on CD. It is bound to attract new fans as well, with the same appeal the band's music has always had - rootsy, self-styled Americana that has withstood the test of time.

5 out of 5 stars Rocky Point rules!.......2006-11-11

we took this cd with us to rocky point on vacation and had everybody dancing and having a good time. The music is alive and well almost thirty years after its conception.

    5 out of 5 stars This is a classic.......2005-04-08

I originally bought this in 33 RPM format, which came in a two record set. I wore out those albums. This brings back some of the best songs that the Daredevils played for their enthusiastic fans at concerts around Missouri and Kansas. The recordings are clear, and you can tell the band played to the enthusiasm of their audiences. Additionally, several artists that joined them when they were around their home town of Springfield, Missouri played on this album.
One of the songs is a very neat setting of "Satisfied Mind" played in the men's bathroom at McDonald Arena at Southwest Missouri State University, so that they could gather the acoustic sound of that area.
I've been looking for this to come out on CD for years, it's one of my favorite Daredevils albums. If you are a Daredevil fan, I'd think you'd need this one, regardless of which Daredevil albums you have, to fill out a good collection of this type of music.

They had a great time making this CD, and it shows. For fans of '70's classic country rock, or Ozark Mountain Daredevils fans, it is a must-have. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars "in the Country Rock Hall of Fame".......2006-08-22

The Ozark Mountain Daredevils belong in the Rock'N Roll Hall of Fame. They have never recorded one bad song. They are "the Beatles of the woods."
This new live recording is great from the first note to the last. It was done on New years Eve 1980. The songs sound close to the originals, but more lively, as you would expect. Steve Cash's harmonica resonates very well on Black Sky and several others. The vocals are fine, sometimes alittle over the top. There are a few musical instrument noises that are off the wall, but generally the sound is excellent. My only complaint is the lack of fiddle playing by John Dillon. Mike Granada's voice adds the usual comic relief. The original line up of musicians rounds out the band.
This live cd proves the Ozark's should not be forgotten in the American roots-rock music scene. They are one country rock band that should tour again.

This is a great recording of OMD live. In the meantime I'll just have to wait for the DVD version and the new studio album that I hope is in the works.
