Mexican rockers Jaguares favor jangly rock rhythms and arena bombast on Cronicas de un Laberinto, and that's not necessarily a great thing. Much of the album is filled with noisy, outdated arrangements that seem swiped from 1980s English-language hair bands--often a pitfall of the rock en espanol genre. Producer Adrian Belew only amplifies the effect, and any social or political messages are diluted. As a result, several of the disc's 14 tracks run together, making for an often monotonous listen. Vocalist Saul Hernandez does what he can, but there's no real fire or passion behind his delivery. Only a few tracks kick into high gear, including first single "Hay Amores Que Matan," which could just as easily have been recorded by Mana. The album's second half is generally more effective, but it's ultimately not enough to save the album from some serious dust-gathering on your CD shelf. --Joey Guerra

3 out of 5 stars Neither great nor awful.......2007-02-28

I have only a fleeting familiarity with Caifanes, who I'd checked out simply because A: I enjoy Rock en Espan~ol, and B: They'd been produced by Adrian Belew. When I saw that he was behind the boards again with Jagares (and I'm not going to jump into the Caifanes vs. Jaguares fray; it's apples to oranges), I thought I'd give it a try.

One caveat I'd make is that some parts of it sound as much like Adrian Belew solo work as they do like Jaguares; sometimes it's the guitar work (which is absolutely sick in places--and I mean that in the best way possible), sometimes the percussion, and sometimes a bit of both. For example, I've played "Bruja Canibal" for a few Belew fans, and they wondered what some guy was doing singing in Spanish on a Belew record.
The standout track, for me, was "Mejor Sera", which wouldn't have sounded out of place on Perfect Circle's "Mer de Noms." It's powerful all around. The disc as a whole is nicely varied; not to a point where it's a distraction, but enough so that the album--or at least its better tracks--don't wear thin on repeated listenings.

Then there's the rest of the album. Some of what's here is a bit slick and poppy ("Tu Me Liberas" comes to mind). And there are a couple of tracks here that, to my ears at least, are throwaways (like the ones that close the album). That, to me, is what makes this a merely "good" album as opposed to a great one. This isn't a waste of money, but you'll have to sit through a few clunkers to get to the good stuff.

3 out of 5 stars JAGUARES/ CRONICAS DE UN LABERINTO.......2006-07-16

5 out of 5 stars Hands down their best CD yet.......2006-01-15

This is by far the Best Jaguares Cd to date. The album rocks! I've been a little dissappointed with the last couple cd's but this one makes up for that. Some of my favorite tracks are Tu me liberas, Esta muy claro, Todo te da igual and Ahi aprendi. The whole disc is great from beginning to end. If you are a fan, or if you've never heard of this band check this one out. It's a keeper. The best CD of 2005!

4 out of 5 stars Welcome Back " Adrian Belew".......2005-09-27

Well , this cd takes a few listens just to realize how good it is. Some people have a hard time accepting Adrian Belew producing a Mexican band. Fact is Belew is back for the second time. He is very influential in the writing of Jaguares. The opening song displays Belew with the wangy guitar.

But , this isn't a Belew album . The songs are all written be Saul Hernandez. They are all typical of their music. There is a lot of energy in the music ,they are great musicians who keep hard rock alive in Mexico. Here is one group who hasn't sold out.Unlike Le Ley and Mana who enjoy much commercial success. This makes for a lack in musical direction.

      5 out of 5 stars A manera de revision.......2001-03-18

5 out of 5 stars Bose at his best!!.......2001-01-10

Miguel Bose is an unbelievable artist. His contribution to Spanish music and to the arts in general is historic,. This album really puts you in a medative, tranquil and mystical state. He is unbelievable. Just like "Bajo el Signo de Cain" and "Los Chicos no Lloran" Bose puts his 110 percent of creative genius in Laberinto. Also, you should check out Aldmovar's film "high Heels" where Bose makes a fantastic performance.

5 out of 5 stars El gran Bose.......1999-09-16

5 out of 5 stars The best job of Miguel Bosè!.......1999-07-09

This album is amazing! Miguel Bosè has the most beautiful voice of the world and one of the best music styles too. Every song is different, and most of them are very beautiful and deep. Don't forget to listen to the track "Tesoro"! And try to see the video of this song too, because is amazing! What else can I say of such intelligent and talented man? Buy it!!

5 out of 5 stars Bose the chamaleon artist.......1999-06-15

Bose deserves more recognition. Not only as one of the most original musicians in spanish language but also as a great and complete artist. Cultivated, human, gentleman, Bose writes, acts, directs, paints, et.al. The only thing i dislile from bose are his english versions:they lack of one of the artists most precious gifts: lyric writting. In spanish they are prose poems, rimbaud, baudalaires and bretons echoes, in english they become sweetie and ridiculous. A legend.

This CD has some really beautiful songs. Though you may not understand spanish, the beauty of the language comes shining through Tish's lovely and soothing voice. The guitar on it is also soothing to the soul..definitely a must buy!

        5 out of 5 stars Her best..........1999-12-09

I love Tish Hinojosa and I love this CD best of all. She manages to succeed with every song, which are characterized by plaintive guitar work, synchopated melodies, unusual rhythms, and Tish's incomparable vocals. It opens with some fantastic guitar with Cuando Llueve. Particularly notable are the incredible Batalla de Hombre no Habra, with drums and bagpipes, and the haunting Vida Prisionera.

Dreaming from the Labyrinth/Sonar del Laberinto, is unlike anything San Antonio singer Tish Hinojosa has done before. Hinojosa has largely abandoned the folk and country roots of her earlier songwriting--and the understated arrangements and descriptive lyrics that come with those traditions. Instead she has opted for an atmospheric, impressionistic art-rock that has more in common with Tori Amos and Sarah McLachlan than such previous reference points as Lucinda Williams and Emmylou Harris. This produces such awful examples of pseudo-poetry as "We'll sail upon a wind that blows above a misty sea, dancing barefoot on the soft earth touching edges of a dream" and such static, tuneless meditations as "Prisonary Life." Hinojosa switches back and forth between Spanish and English within each song, but self-indulgence sounds the same in either language. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars dreaming is the right word for this album..........2002-08-14

...because listening to it is like having a long pleasent
dream. I saw her perform most of this album in Denver and
I have rarely enjoyed a concert as much. I recommend all
          of Tish's albums. I think reviewer Geoffrey Himes is wrong;
yes, it isn't like her other albums but I think it is her
          best.

5 out of 5 stars Change in direction for Tish.......2000-12-20

This collection is not like Tish's previous stuff, which was also good, but was more country/western. This one is unique and it is among my top ten all-time favorite albums. It is done with alternating English and Spanish versus, reflecting Tish's cultural background, which, I think, produces a special kind of passion in the music. I hope this is only the beginning of Tish's new style.

5 out of 5 stars my favorite Tish Hinojosa album.......2000-11-21

Have you ever heard an album or song in a language you don't understand that you really liked due to the singer's voice?

Have you been a little (just a little) frustrated that you don't know what the words mean? I have a number of these in my collection representing many different cultures and languages.

In this album Tish Hinojosa gives you culture with understanding as she seamlessly shifts between spanish and english lyrics within the same song. This could be really hokey or childish, but Tish pulls it off wonderfully... So much so that you often don't even detect the shift in language and really feel like you are also understanding the spanish lyrics. An amazing effect!

As in her other albums, Tish's voice and lyrics are excellent. Some of her other albums lean more toward country, still good, but I prefer this album since it has less (no?) country music influence (just my personal taste).

This is my favorite album of all of Tish's so far.

I highly recommend it to anyone who is intrigued by Mexico and/or hispanic music but who may not know spanish.

          5 out of 5 stars A change of pace.......2000-01-15

Songs on this album span the range from intimate and tender (Whisper Goodbye) to upbeat and searching (God's Own Open Road). Unlike her other works, the themes are introspective. As always, her voice is magnificent, and the arrangements are great. It's definitely a change of pace from the Tejano and folk themes in her other albums.

5 out of 5 stars one of my favorite albums.......1999-05-27

I love this album. I think the reviews from Himes and Dirty Linen stink
