The Greatest Band in the World.......2005-02-25

I defy you to find a trio that grooves with more musicality, humor, and ebullience. It's only a matter of time before these gents start playing large venues -- they make tunes of substance and beauty, they rock harder in concert than you'd imagine, and they back it all up with real playing and improvising chops. What's more, they've yet to release an album that's less than excellent; even the more atmospheric Gront yielded some brilliant sections. Keyed Up is their latest installment, hot on the heels of the previous year's Trio album -- yet more evidence that this group is bursting at the seams with music that is fresh, alive, and beautiful.

My one request of Väsen? Revive the quartet incarnation, and persuade percussionist André Ferrari to tour again. I love both versions of the group, but drums take things to quite another level...

Vasen = tranquility and joy.......2004-11-23

Although Vasen claims to be "Keyed Up" I find them more at peace with themselves and calming like the cover photo. Perky yet relaxed; reflective yet on edge. The stylistic picking of Tallroth's bosoki blends harmoniously with Johansson's kntrabasharpa making me feel pure bliss as I listen to the CD. I'm so keyed up on this disk that I'm going to buy into a Swedish timeshare for my winter vacations!

All Keyed Up.......2006-03-30

Becky Hobbs is one of the greatest piano players in music history, if not THE best! (next to Jerry Lee Lewis, that is.) her piano style is the epitome of female rockers. Her style definately shows in this cd's "ALL KEYED UP." Her Oklahoma honky tonk drawl, flavors George Jones and Whiskey, right on the map in "JONES ON THE JUKEBOX." While her mom and dad inspired "SHE BROKE HER PROMISE," a gentle heart, and two strong hands in "MAMA WAS A WORKIN' MAN," inspired this "COWGIRLS HEART" back in 1988 when I bought this cd. 5 gold stars to Ms. Hobbs on a job well done!

Excellent, mainly up-tempo, traditional country.......2004-03-15

Becky is an exuberant singer-pianist from Oklahoma who has recorded a few (not many) traditional country albums. I've only heard three but they are all of a very high quality. This particular album was originally released on MTM with ten tracks and was later re-issued on RCA with one extra track. My review is for the version with the extra track, which I think was Do you feel the same way too (but I could be wrong) - however, that's not the most important track so don't worry about it if you have to settle for the other version.

Most of the songs here are up-tempo, which suits Becky ideally although she is also good at singing ballads as she shows here on She broke her promise and Old flame burns blue. The standout song (if the is one on an album of such high quality) is Jones on the jukebox, a great song about drowning one's sorrows in drink - the theme is common but this up-tempo classic is one of the best songs of its kind. Another highlight is Mama was a working man, illustrating the problems of working mothers in an entertaining way. The remaining songs are all brilliant.

If you are a fan of uncompromising traditional country music, this is for you. And if this good-time up-tempo album can't cheer you up, nothing else will.

Great Honky Tonk music.......2003-06-06

I loved this CD when I first bought it 12 years ago, and I still love it today. It is not for everyone, but if you like honky tonk Oklahoma twang, you will love it.

After hearing this magnificent work of art and holy inspiration, Ben is the one I will listen to for jazz from now on!! If you are a jazz fan BUY THIS ALBUM as well as any other by Ben. He is greatly talented, you can't help but get into the groove.

Another Gem From Ronnie.......2006-11-19

I found this as a 2nd hand LP in the $1 bin. What a find! All the tracks are at least up to the excellent quality you would expect from Ronnie. It's now one of my favorite Milsap albums. The 5 following tracks are also included on the LP version but not showing on the CD listing?

worthwhile for the piano concerto.......2006-09-14

I find the music on this album endemic of tendencies common to self-contained, academic schools of composition. It all comes off like an inside joke, except without the humor: if you are not familiar with the composer and his style these pieces will largely be lost on you, most likely. Hass seems often to be trying for subtlty but falling short, creating instead only weak, ineffective, or even at times incomprehensible gestures.

The concerto for wind ensemble and amplified piano is the exception. This is not a masterwork, but it is a unique, satisfying piece, at times Stravinskian in its rhythmic dissonance, at times bop-like in its presentation of fast, dry, complicated riffs (I think of the first movement especially), and at times harmonically lush in a post-Romantic vein. Amplifying the piano allows it to balance the full wind band even in the highest range, so that its gestures are not lost up there. Hass' writing and Barnes' playing are formidably virtuosic. I would certainly have preferred a better-recorded wind ensemble; they sound distant and a good deal of clarity and detail is missing. But the piece still works on this recording, and is ultimately effective.
