4 out of 5 stars Rush's "Mellow Album" Is More Hit Than Miss.......2007-06-19

I can understand why some Rush fans, especially ones who have been with the band from the beginning, take issue w/ this album. More than any other Rush release, Hold Your Fire takes the art of synthesizers to the highest level possible, something that critics of the 80s sound will be quick to criticize. Nevertheless, even if you are not a big fan of this period of Rush's development, you have to admit that Hold Your Fire has some truly amazing moments to it.

For one thing, consider the context: this album was released around the time when fellow veteran progressive rockers were charting similar territory, i.e., Genesis' Invisible Touch, Peter Gabriel's So, Yes' Big Generator. Everyone was doing it, and Rush, having always embraced technology, should certainly not have been expected to be immune to this trend. Actually, I believe that the music on this album, more than any other release, compliments the theme perfectly: the importance of reason tempering emotion and instinct.

This is arguably Peart's finest album as a lyricist. Virtually every song is a poetic masterpiece, not even considering the music itself. Regarding the music, I admit there is some legitimacy to critics who site the lack of hard edge, overly polished produciton and diminished guitar role. No argument here. Nevertheless, the synth programming is brilliant, and all three members' musicianship shines as always, including Alex, who pulls off some incredibly emotional moments. To get a good overview of HYF, the best tracks to check out are "Force Ten," "Time Stand Still" and "Mission." While the album contains some weak spots, it is overwhelmingly hit and not miss.

Give it a try! It is not my favorite of Rush's 80's output (this honor would go to Power Windows), but it is easily in my top 10 favorite Rush of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Time Stand Still.......2007-04-25

I think some Rush fans dismissed this album because they felt the band's sound had become too excessive in a pop format. Much of the material on this release is flowing with the use of keyboards, but the songs flow well as Geddy Lee works his magic. Some might say the band was too experimental and incorporating more keyboards left less time for guitar jams. Maybe there is a little less of that, but certainly not absent. I think most fans will realize how Hold Your Fire is a very strong album once given a chance. The emotion and passion for all things remains within the songs and their observations on life and human interaction continue to be thought-provoking. Rush were getting ready to close a chapter in their music career as the 80's were nearing an end, and as every recording marks a moment in time for this amazing group, their music still stands the test of time.

2 out of 5 stars Hold My Fire!.......2007-04-03

Not the greatest of Rush albums however one for the digitally remastered archives and well worth the order fee. Great service from Amazon in speed and supply. However please stop using those sticky bar coded stickers along the edge of the cd box they wreck the presentation and also are a devil to remove. The box for the delivery was also way too big!! Talk about over packaging and the whole green thing! Many thanks though for great supply. Thanks

5 out of 5 stars Stood the test of time well (4.5 stars).......2007-03-28

(Why can't we give half stars? Consider this one a 4.5 star - not in the same league as Moving Pictures or 2112, but close).

I have to admit, I'm NOT generally a huge fan of Rush's "keyboard era", and when this album was new, I hated it, except for Force Ten and Time Stand Still. However, 20 years later, I think this is one of Rush's best albums - indeed, almost a classic.

The songs on this album are very melodic and spiritual. One of the criticisms that you often hear about "Hold Your Fire" is that it is sterile and overproduced, however, I think there is a lot of emotion on these songs ("Mission" in particular). The arrangements are very complex, and these songs get better with each listen as you discover new things about them; this is true art.

Lyrically, this is some of Neil Peart's best stuff, and possibly his best up to this point. The only negative about this album (for me) is that Alex Lifeson's guitar work is very subtle. However, that type of playing fits these songs very well.

4 out of 5 stars Melodic atmospheres, "Hold Your Fire" holds it's own.......2007-02-14

The 1987 release "Hold Your Fire" showcases ten tracks of progressive and powerful music. The mood of most of these songs still stays well within the formula of themes that stay within the circles of hope and perseverance while still reaching further heights of artistic vision. Another nice touch are the great synthesizers that help create a dreamy, magical background of sound for many of the songs on this album.

"Force Ten" has a good beat and is fast in delivery, whereupon we get into the second track on the album, the staple hit "Time stand Still" which is uplifting in its execution which is held up strongly by Geddy Lee's poetic and crisp vocals. The track "Lock and Key" showcases some more great vocals but also has a lot of nice changeups that do what this band does so well, which is create strong rhythms that mix in with some screeching solo's from the guitar of Alex Liefson. Despite leaving their ever epic 70's work behind them, this album's songs still do a great job in really creating the worlds and emotions that emit from the stories told through the songwriting. The song "Turn the Page" has some timeless soundscapes to it and is also song that has a lot of meaning within the songwriting.

The album rounds out with "Tai Shan" and "High Water", two tracks that don't have much punch compared to the others but still retain beautiful sounds and serve a heavier serving in the vocal efforts of Lee than the instrumental mastery of Neal Peart (drums) and Alex Liefson. Overall a great album from their discography that I still enjoy whenever I play it.

4 out of 5 stars Great 80's Feel Good Record.......2006-08-14

I love this CD! A great collection of fun, feel-good, singalong songs that you're sure to like if you want to listen to something other than the doom and gloom "I hate my parents and my life sucks and I'm such a victim so feel sorry for me, boo hoo hoo" that has dominated most records released in the last 15 years. This is definitely NOT one of those records!

First the bad news. I'd give this release 5 stars if it weren't for the 2 filler songs, Sleeping with You and Life in the Real World, both of which seem out of place. The only other downside to this record is the ballad When I Look Into Your Eyes. While this song isn't bad it's a little too sappy for my taste.

The good news is that rest of the record is just awesome! Reach For the Sky and Rock You Tonight are the heaviest songs and great rocking 80s-style anthems. Except for Hold the Dream, the rest of the record is fun and upbeat with songs that will lift your spirits and that you just can't help but sing along to.

Hold the dream is a more melow inspiration song but sounds good and is still enjoyable.

All-in-all, a solid release. While it has a couple of weak songs, the rest of the record is certainly worth the price. Detractors always criticize this style of music as immature and cheesy because it isn't "serious" and doesn't make social or political statements. That's exactly what I like about this record! If you're not in the mood to contemplate the meaning of life or lick the wounds of your victimness, then you can't go wrong with Hold Your Fire!

1 out of 5 stars Garbage does not age well... not like good wine........2006-06-12

Any band that releases an album with a song titled "Rock You Tonight" should be banned from ever recording ever again. I wish that rule would have been in place during Firehouse's hayday. Thank goodness people were sick of this stale brand of Rock and quickly switch to more substantial listening choices.

5 out of 5 stars Firehouse 2.......2006-04-30

This CD carries on where Firehouse left off. I don't think its quite as good as their awesome debut though. Hold your fire and hold the dream would probably be in my top 20 songs of the 90's however. This band was so underated its scandalous.

5 out of 5 stars Hold Your Fire is a must-have for any Firehouse fan!!.......2006-01-14

After 14 years, this album is still getting rotation in my cd player. I love the speed of "Reach for the Sky" and it's catchy rhythms. My favoirte song from this album would have to be "When I Look Into Your Eyes" and "Hold The Dream". I like the song "Sleeping with you". Firehouse delivered another successful album and another top five single with "When I look into your Eyes". This is a great album and a must-have for any Firehouse fan!!!

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Album.......2005-12-04

Another great album by Firehouse. My favorites are Reach for the sky, When I look into your eyes, and hold your fire. I have other favorites, but there are my top 3. I have a story to go along with this album, ladies and gentlemen.

See, I was heading to Cross-Country one day, for the huge "Group 2" meet. (There's a section, and 5 groups from every section make it, and there were four sections, so you can make the calculations). I listened to this album, having a bad day before, and having a bad night of rest. Listening to this album, I got a river of positivity, and I had a great start and a great finish. I ended up smashing my last personal best in Cross-Country. Basically ladies and gentlemen, this cd has alot of effect. Get it.

I love to review things. Have a great day!

5 out of 5 stars Buy This For Patto's Voice and Ollie Halsall's Guitar.......2005-07-06

"Give It All Away" may contain one of the ten best guitar solos of all time-- Ollie Halsall's manic runs up and down the frets are almost completely out of control-- almost. He careens up and down and back and forth and somehow ends up in the perfect place every time. It's a bravura performance on a perfect song. The rest of the album is excellent, but this is my favorite Patto album, and "Give It All Away" stands as their great achievement.

If you liked The Replacements' anarchic energy in the 80s, see what Patto was doing to lay down the foundations in the 70s. This is glorious stuff.

        Album Description

Reissue of their second album, originally on Vertigo...featuring UK axe legend Ollie Halsall...mixing up fiery jazz with hard-rock assault in a manner that can only be called 'fusion.' Vocalist Mike Patto is best known for his playing with Timebox, the Bow Street Runners and Spooky Tooth...this album may just be their best release.

        Customer Reviews:

        3 out of 5 stars Underrated 70's Brit-rockers.......2003-05-16

The creative team of Ollie Halsall and Mike Patto mastered nearly every rock music genre within a relatively brief period of time, yet continue to be largely overlooked by rock 'n' roll historians. Following thier original incarnation as psychedelic popsters Timebox, and preceding thier prog-rock stint as Boxer, Halsall and Patto defied genre as "Patto". "Hold Your Fire" was Patto's 2nd release, and features an interesting blend of jazzy chords, bluesy singing and straight ahead rock 'n' roll frequently wrapped in epic arrangements of prog-rock length (note only 8 cuts on the album). The uninitiated may wonder after a first listen: "What's the big deal?" -but Patto's unique blend has a way of growing on you, especially when you notice the "little touches" like guitarist Ollie Halsall's Lionel Hampton-like prowess on the vibraphone. The standout song is "You You Point Your Finger" featuring a heartfelt vocal from Patto and a beautifully fluid and understated Mark Knopfler-style guitar solo by Halsall. Possibly not everyone's cup of tea, but fans of 70's rock and those who can appreciate "musician's musicians" will enjoy.
