Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best Stevie Wonder collection.......2004-08-28

It is easy to be confused by Stevie Wonder compilations. In the nineties, a double CD was released in America titled Song review, while a single CD was released in Britain with the same title and artwork. More recently, a single CD was released in America titled Definitive collection, so (conversely) a double CD was released in Britain with the same title and artwork. This British double CD is much better than the earlier American double CD titled Song review, which had fewer tracks and missed out some important songs. Indeed, this is the best compilation of Stevie's music that I've seen. Even on two CD's, it is not possible to include every Stevie Wonder recording worth hearing, but all the big hits in Britain and America are here.

You probably have your own favorites. I particularly like You are the sunshine of my life, For once in my life, Yester-me yester-you yesterday, Living for the city, I just called to say I love you, Sir Duke, A place in the sun, Lately and Happy birthday. Other classics (also excellent) include Superstition, I wish, Isn't she lovely, Ebony and ivory (with Paul McCartney), Never had a dream come true, Uptight and so many others.

If you only want one collection of Stevie Wonder music, this is by far the best. If you want to build a collection of his music, this is a great starting point.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to Capture Stevie's Genius on One disc.......2004-07-11

but this set is actually a Solid Overview of One of the Greatest Creative Forces the Music World has Ever Heard.this Set traces His Career from the 60's through the 90's.you see the Diversity in his creative Process.you hear the Musical Growth of His work over time which is the path that leads to Greatness.a Must have especially if you are new to Stevie's Work.

4 out of 5 stars As Good As It Gets!.......2003-03-24

The title of this one really says it all: The DEFINITIVE Collection. And since there has been a number of Wonder compilations issued thru the years, that truly is a bold yet worthwile statement. One must accept the fact that there'll probably never be a perfectly flawless disc(s) of this sort featuring Stevie's very best music - that would take more than 2 CD's and, inevitably, always include the dreaded "I Just Called To Say I Love You". So this, honestly, is as good as it'll ever get.

I've wracked my brain since I got this collection earlier this year and can only come up with two songs I find amiss from it; "Until You Come Back To Me" (in my opinion, superior to Aretha's later hit version of it) and the mighty "Superwoman" - three if you count the 1982 Top 5 U.S. hit "That Girl", which isn't very good although it was a big hit. The European origins of this collection might explain That Girl's exclusion from it though.

That said, if you happen to be looking for some of the best Pop/Soul music of the '60s and '70s (before disco and, in Stevie's case, sickenly sentimental smothness came along and ruined everything), a lot of it is right here. Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Out of Body.......2006-05-16

The album Out of Body is often ignored by Hooters fans. At least this compilation has a couple songs from it. But yeah, buy the original albums instead of the compilations - because once you hear them, you'll want them all, and your mix will be a waste.

3 out of 5 stars There's too many best hits collections.......2005-06-26

That's right! There's Too Many "Best Hits Collections" of these guys. At last count there were more collections of Hooter songs than original albums issued. That's just plain WAKED. I suggest buying "zig zag", "Nervous Night" and "One Way Home" via the used venue here on amazon. This way you own ALL of the great music & YOU decide what their best hits are for yourself, don't let some record industry suit do it for you.

    5 out of 5 stars Blood Sweat & Tears.......2007-07-09

The music sounds better than ever on CD. If you enjoyed them in the 60's, you will really want to add this to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars A refreshing change in the late sixties.......2005-04-02

Brilliant as so much sixties pop and rock music was, Blood Sweat and Tears seemed fresh and exciting with their brand of jazz-rock. Of course, much popular music in the first half of the twentieth century had its roots in jazz, but the jazz influence had all but disappeared from mainstream pop music by the time rock'n'roll took over in the mid-fifties. Blood Sweat and Tears showed that records featuring prominent trumpets and saxophones could sell in huge quantities to pop and rock fans.

The group had three major American hits, all of which came from their second album and all of which peaked at number two - You've made me so very happy (written and first recorded by Brenda Holloway, a much under-rated Motown singer), Spinning wheel and And when I die. While these three songs were major hits in many countries around the world, they conspicuously failed to make much impact in Britain, where one of them (You've made me so very happy) was a minor hit and the other two failed to chart. Still, their music is readily available in Britain so their UK popularity is better than the charts might suggest.

This compilation contains those three classics as well as other great songs such as Lucretia Mac Evil, Hi de ho, Go down gambling (all hits in America) and their cover of Got to get you into my file (written by Paul McCartney for Cliff Bennett and the Rebel Rousers, who had a UK top ten hit with it - the Beatles included their own version on their album, Revolver).

This is not the ultimate Blood Sweat and Tears compilation - there are some notable omissions such as I can't quit her - but it serves as a good introduction to their music.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad at all...price is right........2000-11-14

The price is right for this collection. It also features two tracks from More THan Ever that aren't available on any other CD release.

4 out of 5 stars Better than Columbia's main release.......2000-11-14

I like the Definitive collection's track listing a little better than the main "What Goes Up" compilation. It adds a couple tracks from the album More Than Ever, and includes some of the other Jerry Fisher material. I recommend this disc. Good price too.

Both as a founder member of the Commodores as well as a solo artist, Lionel Richie is one of the best singers/composers/performers from "the miraculous MOTOWN Hit Maker". This import compilation has a very good selection from both stages in LR career, including the wonderful hits "Easy", "Brick House", the nice and funky instrumental "Machine Gun", "Stuck On You", "Hello", "Do It To Me" (single version), "Love Will Conquer All" and more. If you're planning to go into Lionel Richie's magnificent career in music, this CD is definitely for you.

this is not a 2 cd set. the sound quality is far superior than the very best of meatloaf. alot of people would not give it a 5 stars because it is lacking alot of good songs on it. to be a definitive collection. these are early edition songs. so no home by now/no matter what, life is a lemon and i want my money back, i'd do anything for love and objects in the review mirror. the songs you will get is dead ringer for love, two out of three ain't bad, bat out of hell (single version).paradise by the dashboard light, you took the words right out of my mouth, heaven can wait, read em and weep, peel out, im gonna love her for both of us, razor's edge and 6 more. one includes w/ted nugent. i rated it 5 stars. for the soung quality and it still has great songs on this collection.

    Album Details

Tony Christie's Profile Has Been Raised Over the Last Year with a Connection to Peter Kaye. "is this the Road to Amarillo" was Sung Both on Phoenix Nights as Well as Jonathan Ross (Bbc1). The Interest in this Track Resulted in a Hotly Tipped Number One Christmas Single (Which was Never Even Scheduled) and Rumours Are Rife Regarding a Dance Remix of the Track. The Creative for this Album Draws Heavily on an Early Seventies Feel Much in the Vain of "Music to Watch Girls By" and "The Protectors" (The Theme Song "Avenues and Alleyways" Features). The TV Commercial Will Follow this Style, and Should Appeal to a Younger Demographic.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful vocal pop.......2005-04-09

Th UK singer Tony Christie first made the charts in 1971. With his powerful voice and choice of good tunes, he falls into the Tom Jones/Engelbert Humperdinck category of balladeer.

If not quite country, his early songs all had an American Western flavour, like the dramatic power ballad Las Vegas, the tragic story song I Did What I Did For Maria and the flowing Is This The Way To Amarillo which was a UK hit again recently.

His minor hits from the 1970s like Avenues And Alleyways are still quite enjoyable too. In 1978 Christie returned with the beautiful ballad On This Night Of A Thousand Stars from the original studio soundtrack to Evita. The sequence of hits is not strictly chronological, but they do fit into a pattern of the 70s stuff first and the very latest music last.

This collection also contain his more than adequate cover versions of classic songs from that era such as Home Loving Man, Solitaire, You've Lost That Loving Feeling, The Way We Were and Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast. Walk Like A Panther is a hit from the late 1990s, and the compilation includes some brand new tracks.

If you like dramatic and tuneful power ballads, you'll find much to appreciate in the work of Tony Christie. The music has aged surprisingly well.

5 out of 5 stars He found the way to Amarillo - eventually.......2005-04-06

Tony is a British singer who, for a long time, struggled to make a significant impact in his own country. He was far more popular in mainland Europe, especially Spain, where he eventually set up home.

As far as his UK chart history goes, he began in 1971 with Las Vegas, which just missed the top twenty. He then made number two with I did what I did for Maria. However, his third hit of 1971, Is this the way to Amarillo (a song written by Neil Sedaka), only just made the UK top twenty although it was number one in several European countries. Some people have joked that Brits bought the record when they visited Spain rather than buying it at home, but Tony's subsequent career suggests this is not so. In any event, Tony never actually got to Amarillo back then.

After those three hits, Tony had two minor UK hits in the seventies - Avenues and alleyways (originally from the TV series The protectors, the song was also used in a movie, Love honor and obey) in 1973 and Drive safely darling in 1976. He then disappeared completely from the UK charts for many years.

Despite his modest UK chart success, he eventually returned to the UK charts via some influential British fans. First to the rescue came Jarvis Cocker (of Pulp) who wrote Walk like a panther, which gave Tony his second UK top ten hit - twenty-eight years after his first.

Tony only had to wait six years for his next big UK hit, when another fan, Peter Kay, used one of his old songs (Is this the way to Amarillo) in Phoenix nights. The song was given a further boost when released as a UK charity single in 2005. Suddenly, the song that the British public had given a lukewarm response to in 1971 was being played everywhere and gave Tony his first UK number one hit. Everybody wanted to know about Amarillo and the Texas city got plenty of enquiries from Brits. Tony finally made that trip to Amarillo. Whether the woman he originally sang about is still waiting for him, I doubt as thirty-four years have passed since he first asked the question.

This compilation contains all of Tony's UK hits up to April 2005, together with some new recordings (will one of these provide a follow-up hit?) and a selection of older recordings.

Apart from his own hits, you can hear Tony's covers of Solitaire (a Neil Sedaka song that became a UK hit for both the Carpenters and Andy Williams), Most beautiful girl (Charlie Rich), The way we were (Barbra Streisand), You've lost that loving feeling (Righteous brothers) and Home loving man (Andy Williams).

Tony sounds a bit like Tom Jones, whose career also revived in the late nineties. If you enjoy the music of Tom Jones, give Tony a chance.

5 out of 5 stars The best Stevie Wonder collection with extra track.......2003-12-29

The British double CD is much better than the earlier American double CD titled Song review, which had fewer tracks and missed out some important songs. Indeed, it is the best compilation of Stevie's music that I've seen. A year after its original UK release in a slimline 2-CD jewel case, it was re-issued in a digipack featuring a new version of Signed sealed delivered - a collaboration with Blue and Angie Stone.

If you want to build a collection of his music, this is a great starting point.

definitive collection (gold disc) has 1 cd. not 2. telephone line is not in this collection. livin thing (song) is longer. at the end of the song it fades out and another song continues. the sound quality is superior than the box set released in 1999. its more crisp and clear. dont bring me down, shine a little love, hold on tight, evil woman and rock and roll is king. will be noticed compared to the box set. diary of horace wimp, twilight, secret messages. sound about the same. livin thing was more enhanced on the box set. but still sounds crisp.

4 out of 5 stars Jay F. from Atlanta, GA review needs a little correction.......2003-01-11

Recently bought this compilation based partly on the review of Jay F. from Atlanta, GA, only to find out that there are two versions of the Definitive Collection, this one being the re-release on a Gold CD that does NOT include a 2nd bonus CD which was erroneously stated as having in Jay's review.
The Definitive Collection release catalog # 472421 9 is the release that is a 2 CD compilation totaling 27 tracks, whereas this complilation has 19 tracks on a single CD.
The Gold release is still a good compilation, but the 2 CD collection can be had for less.

    5 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL BOMBAST.......2002-11-21

This a thoroughly enjoyable journey through Jeff Lynne's Beatlesque land of Oz. Completely over the top at times but most beautifully so. A sheer delight from beginning to end. The arrangments, the harmonies, the captivating crescendos ..... just lovely. With the exception of the exclusion of 'Telephone Line' (one of the greatest narrations of the complete abject lonliness of a broken heart) this is a perfect complilation. The sonics are extremely transparent showcasing ELO's wonderful harmonies.

    A must for any fan.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent selection!.......1999-09-17

I picked this little gem up in my never-ending quest for every good ELO collection. The surprising thing was the EXTRA CD that's included with it (and not mentioned) -- It has Poor Boy, Calling America, This is the News, and a few other good hits. All-in-all, a good collection and has a good ELO flow to it.
