Product Description
Hear legendary country music singer Jim Reeves LIVE on his long-lost network radio show, featuring the 30-piece Owen Bradley orchestra, the Anita Kerr Singers, as well as Buddy Hall, Dolores Watson and David Cobb. Two shows are featured on this CD, which includes Jim singing songs he never recorded at RCA! NONE of these performances have ever been previously released. In fact, they remained lost for decades. They only recently surfaced and have been digitally remastered from original 16-inch transcription disks. Reeves is typically in great form, with his incomparably rich voice, precise phrasing and perfect pitch on full display. This CD -- the first in a series by VoiceMasters -- represents the "missing link" in Jim's stellar career. Jim Reeves is presented in a context with which most of his fans are completely unfamiliar. As a radio host, he is relaxed and easygoing -- evoking images of Bing Crosby. The Owen Bradley arrangements are effervescent, and the other artists turn in sparkling performances as well. Jim Reeves is the only singer in the history of recorded music to score 34 charted hits AFTER his death in a plane crash in 1964. He toured extensively worldwide and his fan base is international, with over 188 million in sales and recent records going platinum. "Jim Reeves Around the World" firmly establishes this great artist as in a league with the best crooners of all time. Includes 6 page booklet by Reeves biographer Larry Jordan, and a letter from one of Jim's sisters!

4 out of 5 stars Jim Reeves.......2007-06-08

Good compilation. However, on some of the numbers the background music practically covers Jim's great voice. I know strings were in at that time, which really dates the recordings, but somehow they could be toned down a bit. Altogether, a great addition to your collection.

I introduced my elderly parents to the world of CDs by buying them a very easy CD player to use and the Jim Reeves CD was one of the first CDs I purchased for them. They love the selection of songs and are really enjoying it.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Voice!.......2005-08-09

This guy has got the richest most sincere voice in the history of male singers in my book. Sweet, sad and silly lyrics adorn all of these songs, and his voice just adds to the quality of the overall music. I definitely recommend this for those who enjoy oldies but goodies.

5 out of 5 stars The Essential Jim Reeves.......2007-03-21

This cd has a lot of the hits that made Jim Reeves a household name. No one croons a love song like he does. If you like Jim Reeves you will love this compilation of music.

5 out of 5 stars This includes all the songs I was looking for!.......2006-11-10

This set of two CD's contains all the great songs I remember and a few I had never heard. If you would like to relax and to remember the smooth sound of Jim Reeves, you will be glad you bought this album!

5 out of 5 stars Definitive American hits collection.......2006-10-30

Please note this is a re-issue of the earlier Anthology double CD with different title and packaging but an identical track listing. Unlike, the original set, this one has been given a British release although (as I'll explain later), Brits may notice that some of Jim's biggest UK hits are missing.

Jim's hit career was more complicated than most, because he had different hits in different countries. So, depending on which country you live in, the tracks you regard as essential will vary. This particular collection appears to be the definitive American hits collection, beginning with his earliest hillbilly music (the first eight tracks) and ending with the pop crossover music that everybody remembers him for (the remaining thirty two tracks). Of course, Jim had far more than forty hits so plenty of minor hits are missing but all of Jim's big American country and pop hits are here.

Everybody has their own favorites, but here you will find Distant drums, He'll have to go, I won't come in while he's there, I guess I'm crazy, Snowflake, Welcome to my world, Adios Amigo, Is it really over, This is it, Blue side of lonesome, Bimbo, Mexican Joe, Yonder comes a sucker and so much more. Eighteen of the twenty tracks from an earlier compilation also titled Essential Jim Reeves (the best American single CD compilation) are here, the exceptions being I love you because (a minor American hit) and Suppertime (not a hit in America).

Brits and expatriate Brits thinking of buying this collection should note the omission of three UK top ten hits (There's a heartache following me, I love you because, It hurts so much) and three other UK top twenty hits (You're the only good thing, Not until the next time, But you love me daddy). If you are looking for these tracks, you'll find them on a compilation made for the British market. This compilation was originally released for the American market so there is no reason for any of these songs to be included here.

Some songs turn up regularly on Jim Reeves compilations but others are occasional visitors. I was particularly pleased that they included Love is no excuse, a duet with Dottie West. Dottie was struggling for recognition until Jim persuaded RCA to sign her. She stayed with RCA for fourteen years so it was clearly good for all concerned but might have been even better. Love is no excuse, together with its B-side, was intended to be the primer for an album of duets. The rest of the album was never recorded because Jim died in a plane crash while the single was in the country top ten. It must have been particularly hard for Dottie to come to terms with as she had lost another friend (Patsy Cline) the year before in a different plane crash.

For American fans of Jim Reeves, this is the definitive hits collection. For Jim's British fans, here's a chance to get some classic songs that don't get released very often in Britain as well as some very familiar songs.

5 out of 5 stars Expertly picked 40-track anthology of Nashville hitmaker.......2006-06-01

Reeves was a consistent presence in the country charts throughout the late 50s and early 60s, landing single after single in the upper reaches of the country charts, and often finding crossover success in the pop world. So unquenchable was the public's thirst for his work, that even his untimely death in a 1964 plane crash couldn't quell his commercial success; his posthumous releases continued to land at the top of the country chart throughout the rest of the '60s, and albums that mixed these hits with previously released material continued to sell briskly.

Reeves' earliest successes, recorded for Fabor Robison's Abbott label, hardly predicted the soft Nashville Sound he'd spearhead just a few years later. 1953's "Mexican Joe" and "Bimbo," are chock full of twang, and though the playful lyrics are more Arthur Godfrey than Hank Williams, the barrelhouse piano, fiddle and steel are miles from the pop-influenced material Reeves would record at RCA. It was that 1955 transition, moving from Abbott to RCA (and not coincidentally moving from the Louisiana Hayride to the Grand Ol' Opry) that gave Reeves his new sound.

It wasn't an instantaneous transition, as 1955's "Yonder Comes a Sucker" shows. Reeves is still singing country, and his 1956 cover of Jimmie Rodgers' "Waiting for a Train" still has fiddle and steel at the break. Where you can really start to hear the turn is with 1957's Chet Atkins produced "Four Walls," on which the tempo is slowed, smooth background singers are added, and Reeves draws out his vocal into a bona fide croon. Throughout the rest of the decade Reeves and Atkins continued to explore and tune the new sound, smoothing out both the singing and arrangements as they went.

Reeves discovery of himself as a ballad singer had nothing but a positive effect on his career, sustaining his country success and crossing over with the likes of "Four Walls, "He'll Have to Go," and "Welcome to My World." Throughout the early '60s his singles continued to top the country chart while regularly turning up in the lower reaches of the pop top 100. Though Reeves could write his own material, he and Atkins also had good ears for songs from Nashville stalwarts like Roger Miller, Bill Anderson, Harlan Howard, and many others. The result is an unusually strong and deep catalog of easy-going material that shares some of the somnambulistic qualities of Perry Como, but retaining a hint of the edge with which Reeves began.

Among the dozens of Reeves collections, this 2-CD set stands tall. Originally released in 2003 under the title "Jim Reeves - Anthology," it includes material that wouldn't fit on a single disc, yet it's not so encyclopedic (as is Bear Family's 16-disc "Welcome to My World") to be without focus. Reeves best-loved hits are here, running from his Abbott sides, through his early work at RCA to his most famous Nashville sound hits and through posthumous hits "Is it Really Over?" "Distant Drums" and "I Won't Come in While He's There." The rebranding of this 2003 anthology only extends to the title and cover art; the track list and liner notes remain the same as the original "Anthology" release. 5 out of 5 stars If Only.............2002-07-04

This "Greatest Hits" compilation (blue cover) should be a companion to their "Remembering" album (red cover), which lists Patsy first. This one is another winner in the best of the Nashville Sound tradition. High points for Jim are a moody "Welcome to My World", "Am I Losing You?" and a sadly reflective "Golden Memories and Silver Tears"-which for some reason did NOT make the Billboard charts. Patsy fans will enjoy "Sweet Dreams of You" and her only 2 #1 hits, "I Fall to Pieces" and "She's Got You". The best track is the first: "Have You Ever Been Lonely-Have You Ever Been Blue?" which was electronically created in the studio. It went to #5 on the Billboard charts in the fall of 1981, close to 20 years after their untimely deaths from plane crashes in the early 60s. As has been written before; COULD WE EVER USE THESE TWO TODAY! Jim had 29 Billboard hits after (!) his death and Patsy had 5 after hers. One suspects their careers would remain in full bloom if they were still with us. If only their planes had stayed on the ground on those fateful days...

3 out of 5 stars Honestly? The title is misleading........2000-11-03

Well, I bought this little jewel thinking from the title suggestion that it was all overdubs of Jim & Patsy together. The back label makes no mention that it isn't-it's only when you start delving into the CD that you find out it's not all duet stuff. So, the title is really misleading, but the music itself is great. Problem is, not all Jim Reeves fans are going to be Patsy Cline fans and vice versa and dedicated fans of either one are going to have just about everything on here already. Really, a senseless compilation.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "Moonlight and Roses"/"The Jim Reeves Way".......2006-03-12

This is a superb Jim Reeves Double Album. As a teenager in my homeland, I used to listen to the beautiful songs in this collection on two Long Playing Records decades ago for countless times. I have particularly enjoyed the sweet renditions such as Rosa Rio, Roses. There's A New Moon Over My Shoulder,In the Misty Moonlight,There 's that Smile Again,It hurts so much to see you go,I Can't Stop Loving you, A Nickel Piece Of Candy, Where Do I Go To Throw A Picture Away and Somewhere Along The Line. Jim's rich baritone voice is so charming. I am sure that he had the voice of an Angel and that our Heavenly Father in His infinite wisdom did lend Jim to us so that our lives could be happier.Jim , I believe , is now in Heaven singing with the Angels. All Lovers of Jim Reeves Songs should buy this album. It is a priceless gem.Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Gentleman Jim on the Job.......2004-10-14

I still have my old 33 1/3 vinyl of "The Jim Reeves Way", a bit tattered but the album is unscratched. I ordinarily wouldn't recommend ANY album where the singer covers songs that are virtual signature songs of other singers, even if they were recorded later in some instances. This CD has songs remembered as being sung by Gene Autry, Eddy Arnold, Jerry Wallace, Don Gibson and who knows else. I can recall only "Somewhere Along the Line" as a Reeves hit in America. I could be wrong. But his renditions of others' songs are so good and the non-commercial cuts, "Nickel Piece of Candy", "Where Do I Go to Throw a Picture Away?", "Maureen", and "Ek Verland (sp) Na Jou" ("I'm Missing You") from South Africa where he was enormously popular are so exceptional, I must recommend this. The songs need not conjure up specific memories. Jim could have sung from the telephone book and sounded good. I recommend this twofer highly.

4 out of 5 stars The last of the original Jim Reeves albums.......2004-09-19

"Moonlight And Roses" was the last album released in Reeves' lifetime (1964), and inlcudes the pleasant title song and really nice versions of "Mexicali Rose" and "When I Lost You", among others. After his death RCA released "The Jim Reeves Way", which also included great versions of "In The Misty Moonlight", "I Can't Stop Loving You". and one of his most beautiful recordings -- "Maureen". These albums are the crossover artist that so nicely balanced country and pop. Both are produced primarily by Chet Atkins with most arrangement by Anite Kerr. I listen with headphones only, and this twofer sounds very, very good. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Memories with Jim.......2005-08-06

My parents had "A Touch of Velvet" when I was growing up in the 60s. I loved the melodies, Jim Reeves's voice, and the strings. The arrangements are beautiful. The songs are ballads with a country flavor and the clean sound is characteristic of Nashville in the 50s and 60s.
Being able to hear this beautiful music again is a real treat. Jim Reeves was a wonderful talent, largely forgotten today, but still very listenable. I recommend this highly.

5 out of 5 stars Jim at his very best.......2004-12-15

These two albums are the best he ever recorded in my opinion. The
"Talkin to your heart" album are wonderful recitations. The "Touch
of velvet" is outstanding. Jim is at top form, what a great voice.
If you like anything by Jim Reeves then this CD is a must.

This posthumous release gathers together the best-known inspirational numbers by "Gentleman" Jim Reeves, the East Texas troubadour who perfected traditional country's smoothed-out Nashville sound. With his inimitable velvety baritone, Reeves caresses each note in his signature laid-back style, performing with genuine confidence rather than smarm. "I'll Fly Away" marries Reeves's classic tones with Floyd Cramer-styled piano and "Padre of Old San Antone" captures the highly polished Tex-Mex flavor introduced by Reeves on his monster hit "Mexican Joe." "We Thank Thee," an eloquent ballad of gratitude, exemplifies the sophisticated country-pop that Reeves and contemporary Patsy Cline popularized, "In the Garden" shines brightly with ringing guitar coupled with Lawrence Welkian group background vocals, and "Trouble in the Amen Corner" is a first-class tearjerking talkie. --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars Jim Reeves At His Best.......2006-11-12

I usually do not write reviews (I don't do concerts either) but this one I could not pass up. If for whatever reason at the end of a hard day you need to relax, listen to this CD. The music has a most soothing effect and when it is over I feel real good. I am an avid Jim Reeves fan and his beautiful voice is always the key, but the song selections on this disc are wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars All Time Gospel Favorites by Jim Reeves.......2006-03-13

We love Jim Reeves and his music. We just returned from a visit to a hospice where a close friend of ours is dying. We played it in our car going and coming. It is quite comforting.

4 out of 5 stars Almost As Good As It Gets.......2000-01-29

The recording is excellent. Many of the songs I have heard before but there are some good ones that I haven't. I would recommend this to any Jim Reeves fan. I rated it 4 stars because I have the "Essential Jim Reeves" and I feel it deserves the 5 stars. This one isn't quite as good.

My whole family are Jim Reeves fans and I have been listening to his music since the 1960s. This is a wonderful CD filled with his beautiful voice. It brings back fond memories of my mom & dad who loved him as well. I just sing along to my heart's content with this wonderful CD.

5 out of 5 stars "We Thank Thee".......2006-03-09

This has been and still is one of the most beautiful inspirational albums by the inimitable Jim Reeves that I have really enjoyed many decades ago as a teenager in Guyana, a former British colony. It is a spiritual banquet for the soul and a great source of comfort to the heart. I love the beautiful renditions of We Thank Thee, Where We'll Never Grow Old,I'll Fly Away,Across The Bridge, Have Thine Own Way Lord. My Cathedral, The Night Watch,I'd Rather Have Jesus, Where Do I Go From Here, Take My Hand Precious Lord, This World Is Not My Home, Oh, Gentle Shepherd and How Long Has It Been.I feel that Jim Reeves was one of God's greatest gifts to man, with his sweet rich, velvety, baritone voice. The album is a collector's treat.Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Its just right.......2003-07-16

For most people, gospel music is either too abrasive or too slickly done. Its got to have soul but needn't be emotionally overwraught. Jim Reeves performances are just right. For fanatics he may be too smooth, but every one else can just appreciate the fact that these lovely songs are performed by one of the warmest voices in recorded history. It is a perfectly lovely baritone that is never overextended. Familiar hymns like 'I'd Rather Have Jesus' and 'Take My Hand Precious Lord' are sung with equal measures of confidence and humility. Less familiar songs like 'My Cathedral' and 'We Thank Thee' are given what must become definitive performances. If you enjoy Elvis' quieter gospel recordings, you will love this album.

    5 out of 5 stars WE THANK YOU-JIM REEVES!!.......2000-08-18

What a beautiful album by the velvet voice of country music Mr. Jim Reeves! When released in 1962 this album had 12 songs on it, this remastered version has 16. The sound quality is superb! The song selection, marvelous! Tracks like "Where we'll never grow old", "I'd rather have Jesus", and "My Cathedral" are gospel music classics! And who better to sing these hymns than Jim Reeves. Even if you don't like religious music, you can't help but love this cd. 36 years after his death, these Jim Reeves recordings still sound as fresh as the day they were recorded. And if you have always been curious about the velvet voice of Jim Reeves, look no further! This is a great way to get to know this man's timeless voice. I'm glad this is a cd release, if it were on vinyl, it would be worn out by now! I strongly recommend this cd to anyone who enjoys Jim Reeves, and especially to music fans who never heard of Gentlemen Jim. You like music? This will be music to EVERYONE'S EARS!!! Thank You Jim Reeves for such a beautiful album, for generations to come.

5 out of 5 stars We Thank God for Thee Jim Reeves.......1999-12-30

This album is definetly a Gospel Treasure that has been hidden for far too long. I grew up as a child listening to my parents playing this album every Sunday. Today I am a grown woman, and I still yearn to hear sweet sounds of Jim Reeves. My favorite songs on this album are: Precious Lord Take My Hand, My Cathedral & This World is Not My Home. This album has not just touched my life, but the life of many of my family and friends. When I listen to Jim's voice on this album, I definetly know that the Divine one put him here on this earth to glorify us with his sound and style of Grand Traditional Gospel. They are numerous gospel albums out there to mention, but this is by a far the most superlative of them all. I have spent years writing to BMG & Heartland trying to get this album printed on cd, until I came across a company that was selling this as an Import from out of Germany. I ordered 3, and I also had a family member(uncle)whom ordered 4. This album will not only bless your heart, but it will also comfort your soul. Whenever I listen to this album it just does something special to my heart, that only the Divine one can explain. This album will definetly change your life in anyway possible. For you have never been anywhere until you have been "Across the Bridge" with the Essential Jim Reeves! This is my number one pick for the Millenium. I encourage you to go out and get a copy of this album, if you don't already own it. Remember, "This World Is Not Our Home", we are just passing through.

4 out of 5 stars Not Long Enough.......2005-08-29

Two strong, easy-to-listen-to voices that were tragically taken well before their time! Jim Reeves mellow, soothing vocals were always a treat to listen to alone-----very romantic. Patsy's voice was strong and passionate, but both sang from the core of their hearts. Mixed together, it's a classic combination. The only problem I found was the CD was not long enough! There could have been 20 - 25 songs done by those two great gone-too-soon artists!!

5 out of 5 stars Could We Use These 2 Today!.......2002-02-16

"Remembering" is classic country. How tragic that both Jim and Patsy were killed in separate plane crashes in the early '60s at the height of their careers. How we could use these 2 today! While the album may not represent the best work of either star, I recommend it on its' own merits. Patsy gives us a plaintive "Why Can't He Be You" and a pleasantly authoritative "Leavin' On Your Mind". (She'll just find another guy!) Jim gives us two huge posthumous hits; "Missing You" and a wonderful "Distant Drums", with that fade in and fade out thumping. Rising to #1 in early '66, how appropriate it must have been for the Vietnam- bound soldier, not to mention his family and girl friend. Jim had 31 Billboard hits AFTER his death. "Remembering" also presents a pseudo duet, "I Fall to Pieces", produced electronically in the studio. It may have been Patsy's solo hit in real life, but so what? In fact, with Jim and Patsy, what's not to like? Buy it and enjoy the work of 2 great pros, both of whom are surely turning in their graves at what their "successors" have done to the industry.

The album"Tall tales and short tempers" is one of Jim Reeves best album.Only available at Bear Familys giant 16 cdbox.
The other half"He`ll have to go" is not the same as the one released in 1959.
Somebody at RCA/BMG messed it up.
Only a few songs is from "He`ll have to go"
Buy it because you will probably not gonna buy "Tall tales and short tempers" this cheap elsewhere.

1 out of 5 stars Uh, wait a minute! Not the original albums!.......2004-11-21

bMG made a big mistake in reissuing these two albums! Shame on you BMG! The album He'll Have To Go is not the 1959 album which is the original version it and has songs such as I'm Beginning To Forget You, Home, Partners, After A While, He'll Have To Go and others! This album is simply a useless compelation of live radio broadcasts which are on several other CD's and the Tall Tales And Short Tempers album! The version of Danny Boy is not t he released version with the Anita Kerr Quartet! BMG you should check before you release albums like this! I of course havve all of these albums on the big 16 CD box set but do not and I'm warning all fans out there, do not buy this album because they are not the original albums!
