Album Description

Maria Bamford speaks in many voices. No, She is not an impressionist, unless you count the stellar impression of her mom. Maria feels her high-pitched voice does not command respect, as a result, she has taken on many voices to help her in her wickedly funny jokes. Decidedly off-beat, Maria has a wide-eyed innocence that comes shining through on this, her debut on CD.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars You'll LOVE Maria!!.......2007-05-26

I don't remember how or when I first heard of Maria Bamford, but upon that first listen I was instantly hooked! Hers is one of the few comedy CDs that I will listen to over and over again and still laugh in all the same places.

Her comedy style is an erratic but exhilarating ride through a crazy array of subjects and funny voices --- you'll never guess what she's going to talk about or SOUND like next!

Maria's tales of temp work, beauty pageant contestants (one of my favorite voices), women's magazine advice and outrageous impressions of her dear, sweet mom will have you laughing 'til your guts hurt!

Definately unique and not your average woman comic, I am also amazed that Maria is not yet so well known!

(So buy her CD now, so we can quote her first!)

5 out of 5 stars Best female standup out there..........2006-12-21

This is honestly some the best standup comedy I've ever heard. Maria is unique and quirky in her humor, and this cd really does her justice. I've yet to find one person who hasn't laughed out loud several times during this cd. While her many (very impressive) voices are her main attraction, she doesn't overdo them...she backs everything up with solid comedy that is actually FUNNY. She's also very quotable.

Too many female comediennes now seem like they're just struggling to make it in a man's world, so their routines are usually either too wraunchy, desperate, or man-hating. Not even a hint of that with Maria. She's brilliantly hilarious and her comedy is a brand of its own. An undeniable true talent.
Entertaining, energetic, and witty- you'll become a Maria Bamford fan within 10 minutes of listening to this cd.

Personal favorite tracks: Small Talk, Crazy Cult, Vennette

5 out of 5 stars Very Funny Chick .......2006-03-05

I checked this girl out because I was noticing her on different TV shows and whatnot, and I checked out her CD. It is so incredibly hilarious. Her voices are very funny, and her talk about "sexual harrassment" is funny as well. If you're going to buy the CD, buy it for her explaining what to do with Saddam. Make him a Roller Rink DJ. Funny stuff. I haven't seen her live, as with any comedian, but I'm sure she brings the same things to the table as on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Very Impressive Debut Album.......2006-02-02

There's a bit of a lack right now of really unique, standout female comics, and I'm keeping a close eye on Bamford. Her act works because she A) is down-to-Earth and sincere, not an invented "character"; and B) her voices take her beyond the formulaic joke-telling practiced by most comics. And an important part of why her voices are so effective is that she never uses them in an announced, "hey guys, I'd like to do some impressions now" kind of way. Her characters come up naturally, and are used to discuss interesting subjects and social points. Characters presented conversationally as a tool for satire is infinitely more interesting than the almost Vaudevillian "Here are my impressions guys" format.

Maria Bamford's work on "Burning Bridges" is diverse in subject matter, yet consistently funny. It's an excellent introduction to Bamford's vulnerable and insightful presence. Along with her partners who tour together as the "Comedians of Comedy", she is underated, inspired, and hopefully a star in the making.

5 out of 5 stars Keep Burning Those Bridges.......2005-12-04

I first became aware of Maria Bamford a couple years back when I chanced upon a stellar one-hour special of hers on Comedy Central. Maria was funny as hell (funnier, actually), and quite memorable what with her intelligent odd-ball tangents and cute, squeeky voice. But her prosaic name (No offense) slipped my mind after a while. And it wasn't until November of 2005, when I saw the Comedians of Comedy film, that I instantly recognized her and was able to finally put a name to her pretty face. "Hey, 'Maria Bamford' --- THAT'S her name. Maria Bamford! Maria Bamford!" I was glad to have solved this mystery, especially since Robert Stack was now worm food.

Anyway, I feel tired all of a sudden doing all this typing. Perhaps I'll describe her CD in detail at a later point. For now, all you need to know is... yes, The Burning Bridges Tour is a funny listen. The hilarious punchlines are definitely there, but I find the overall tone of her delivery most captivating of all. (Her mock "alpha female" voice is particularly amusing.)

5 out of 5 stars Haste the f...in day.......2006-10-21

boy this is one of the best hardcore metal bands around, I just found out about them on this years Headbangers ball c.d. and I love their c.d.'s. I can't wait for more stuff by them in the future even though Jimmy Ryan is gone. Awesome stuff if you're into as I lay dying, from autumn to ashes, Ligeia etc... rock on.

5 out of 5 stars Listen to this.......2006-06-17

You must listen to this if you are into metal, hardcore, or music of that nature. The vocals are amazing and guitars are excellente. The drums will pound your ears off. This is some of the hardest metal around and it's got a good message. I think this is a little better than When Everything Falls but they're both about equal. You should check out all of HTD's material and look for them in the future.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing Debut.......2006-04-21

When Haste the Day released they're Solid State Debut Burning Bridges, alot of people compared them to Zao, and being a die hard fan of Zao i had to get it. Really i dont hear that much of Zao in their music to tell the truth, Jimmy's screams are really the only thing even kinda similar! But other than that this album, heck this band is amazing!! everything from the music, with killer guitar work, catchy melodies, hard drums, and great breakdowns, everything is in place! the vocals are great as mentioned with Jimmy's screams then add the clean vocals in places which add so much to this band! and you have this amazing album! there isnt a song i skip, but my favs are (Blue 42 (killer bass lines) American Love, Song of Faith, The Last Goodbye, Substance, and Breaking My Own Heart). if you love hardcore get this album its simply amazing!!!

5 out of 5 stars Sickkkkk.......2006-04-14

This cd kicks so much ass, it is better than there newer album "When Everything Falls". This cd has great breakdowns, sick vocals and great guitarwork. It has good singing too, which adds to the band. Get this if you want good metalcore/hardcore with some insane vox and some good solid singing. Oh and the breakdowns too, sickkkk.

5 out of 5 stars debut album..........2006-03-25

this was haste the day's debut album a couple years later after their release of That They May Know You. this will most likely be the album that will get haste the day known to the masses. and this time it will five times as hard as their ep. this album has many breakdowns, crazy music on the instrument part, as well as jimmy, devin, and brennan's vocals kicking in. mostly Jimmy's of course. this album is a must.

5 out of 5 stars Why cant all metal be this good?.......2006-08-24

If Arch Enemy and Killswitch Engage were to play next to each other, people would fling bags of flaming poo at the latter and continue headbanging to this ausome band. The Swedish metal scene, which, unfortunately, destroys the North American metal scene (Im talking about bands that came after 2000), is blossoming with amazing bands such as this, Dark Tranquility, In Flames, Opeth, Amon Amarth, Soilwork, and Hypocrisy.

Onto the album, everything is top notch. The Amott brother's guitars flow and weave into each other gracefully, Daniel Erlandsson's drums are always complex and interesting, and Johan Liiva's vocals are fierce and brutal. Every song has an interesting riff and drum beat that never stales and always leaves you wanting for more. The solos are spot on, and only Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King or Dave Mustaine and Marty Friedman could ever form a better guitar team that Mike and Chris Amott.

Every song is a classic, but The Immortal, Angelclaw, Silverwing, and Pilgrim are my favorites.

Make sure to look into this band more, even with a new singer, their still making high-quality metal.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this and nothing after this from Arch Enemy. .......2006-07-19

This is what melodic death should be. Angela killed this band and anybody who says differently doesnt know crap about music. Johan had a gut wrenching bellow Angela sounds the same on every song. Shes ugly as hell too, wait til she gets close to a camera its horrible. So on top of being ugly she cant sing and ruined the band completely. Only Hot Topic kids like Angela , plain and simple. Go buy the new Scar Symmetry and Nightrage albums and boycott anything Angela Gossow sings on. Pilgrim man was the first song I heard on this albuma nd it remains a freakin juggernaut of riffing and drum devastation.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Of Arch Enemy...Liiva...You Will Be Missed..........2006-04-04

Now my old review got erased, somehow, so I will improve on it. Again this was my tenth review in a day so I won't make it worth your while (hehe)...

Back in 1999 I started to like music. Somehow I came across this band and loved the way everything sounded (yes, when I was 9), except for one thing. Johan Liiva. I thought his voice was monotonous, terrible, aggravating, you get the picture. I would later love Angela's because it was easier to grasp on and fitted with the music better (not the looks...ok maybe). I eventually sapped up the Wages Of Sin and Anthems Of Rebellion albums completely with songs I liked. There was nothing left (this was before Doomsday Machine). However, I knew that AE had 3 albums before Wages, but I knew that the silhouette of Liiva still lingered. The truth was unbearable. I looked at the truth, it looked at me. I flicked it off and gave this album a listen. Four words (not to choke upon).

Oh My F****** God...

This was bad, like, really really bad. WAIT STOP THERE. Ok one of my friends who helped me get into AE played "The Immortal" on his iPod but I instantly was turned off. However, months later I would come across a site that had a video for "The Immortal". Curiosity killed the cat, but didn't we wanted it dead anyways? I downloaded it and watched the whole thing. Liiva still sounded redundant and bad, but this time was different. I could see the intricacy in the dual guitars and the drums. The way they worked was much more various and compelling than on any of Angela's releases. It felt solely technical yet melodic on a wider scale. It took many listens of "The Immortal" before I finally settled on Liiva's vocal capacity and eventually sapped in the atmosphere of Burning Bridges.

The darkness that shrowds this album is different than the one that clouded Stigmata and Black Earth. Something about it feels deeper and forcefull (not forced)to the listener. I strongly feel that this release intended to be the lasting impression of what Arch Enemy is capable of, because it shows contently. There are only 8 tracks, but they are all worthy of residing on this CD. This is the first with Sharlee (a grand addition) and the return of Daniel Erlandsson (still one of the best drummers in metal).

The Immortal - The song that finally helped me overcome whatever nonsense I was thinking about Johan Liiva and Arch Enemy's early releases. This song alone sets you alone in AE's world. This is a song of unmeasured power and proves a perfect opener.

Dead Inside - Another quick go-getter. The solo really pulls the song ontop of a mountain (to great heights). Everything somehow comes together on this one, and you can clearly hear the mumble of the bass lingering.

Pilgrim - The second song that pulled me right in. Strong drumming entrance with the arrival of the guitars a few seconds in tearing it up and then a minature solo before Liiva pops in, ready to pound you with his pissed off vocals. IS IT EVITABLE NOT TO BANG YOUR HEAD DURING THE CHORUS RIFF???? SO DAMN GOOD! Love the trailing solo with that awesome pre-chorus riff right at the end of it. This will be your definite favorite.

Silverwing - Your already unsuspectedly smacked in the head with the the four instruments and taken along for a ride. Liiva appears a minute later and all of a sudden, one of the grooviest, happiest solos of Arch Enemy comes into play (this one you will love). Then Liiva yells a bit more and you are taken back home with the solo.

Demonic Science - Another immediate pounder. This one chugs endlessly. Upon reaching the vocals you think it might end to mix well but it continues without letting go. Might turn you off at first, but then you get brief chugs, "THIS IS THE ERA!THIS IS THE TIME!A NEW DAWN ARRIVES!", and another groovy yet brief solo shines for a few seconds before withdrawing behind the chugging once again. Follows suit once again and you are led into space by the solo after Liiva's last appearence on the track.

Seed Of Hate - Between "Pilgrim" and this has to be my favorite track. Shreds instantly with a great riff and then churns to a bobbing pluck between guitars and the steady beat of Daniel. This brief scene will make you feel that you are in a dream between dimensions. It is so moving yet ponderous that you are incapable of anything except listening. "My Fear...Come Closer...I TRUSTED YOU"! Liiva then yells his pain (this pain is bearable and makes you feel it). Nicely done melody from the guitar (whichever is playing, usually Michael, but they choose). Then we get a solo that reminds me of old Metallica but then picks up its Death Metal influence at the end of it. Ends perfectly.

Angelclaw - Probably my least favorite, but this alone is better than any pop album. Plays really smoothly with the continual of Liiva's monstrous vocals (this time a little less wide than on Black Earth and Stigmata). Something about it seemed less hooked than the rest but nonetheless one of the more lyrical and riffed based tracks.

Burning Bridges - The last track on this masterpiece. This one is the only slow one, and it churns out a riff like no other. Here we hear Johan back to his old vocal range (but greatly improved). The lasting message is clearly left,"So now the bridges are burnt...a lesson learned? Promises broken...changes in you/me, maybe it was never meant to be...we were far to close to see. Then a more suddle and melodic approach appears, completely altering the entire mood that the previous 7 tracks witnessed. While hearing this one I looked at the cover...a statue with a severed arm. Something about it was unclear, like the scarred man on the cover of Stigmata. I couldn't understand, so I put it down and kept listening until the end.

Cleary, Michael Amott led himself and the rest to the top of the world with this. Immediately became a success and definite improvement over the progressive Stigmata. I find this to be the only true album of Liiva's days to be heard by me, although the guitars are nearly unmatched on Stigmata and really unmatched on Black Earth. I now feel sad at the fact of Liiva's departure after this, because now I feel what others felt of him. He has been missed dearly and will continue to be missed, but their was a reason for it and Arch Enemy has continued to release albums away from the sell-out bar, which probably makes Liiva smile from time to time. With better production, structure, and the power vested in the brothers Amott, Burning Bridges hails as one of the greatest melodic death metal albums in the scene and atop of the greatest metal albums in history.

5 out of 5 stars The last Liiva release with Arch Enemy.......2005-06-02

As compared to Stigmata, this album is so much less darker. Stigmata, in my opinion is a masterpiece but not as melodic as Burning Bridges. Here, the Ammott brothers show everyone that they are the best at making those great guitar leads. Arch Enemy is my choice for most catchiest, emotional guitar solos off of Sweden. At least with this album, I've established that.
As compared to Anthems of Rebellion, this album may be shorter but so much better. Anthems is a totally different band and the guitars are just ordinary! There is nothing emotional about them and they tend to be either thrash or just nu-metal-like in that album.

5 out of 5 stars Best Melo Metal Album to date.......2005-04-17

This Album has to be the best Melo Metal Album ive heard and deinitly is the best from arch enemy all together. The tracks on this album have so much melodey and yet so much brutality.

4 out of 5 stars High speed punk fury meets rockabilly.......2002-12-13

The Gotohells are in a unique punk category with the likes of the Supersuckers and REO Speeddealer. They're extremely high energy, high speed and melodic. If you were to combine the DNA of the Ramones and Rob Zombie in a testtube, you would get the Gotohells. Burning Bridges is the perfect CD to play at maximum volume while doing 100 mph down the interstate. From the first track to the last, the tempo is breakneck and the guitar hooks are so damn catchy. Interspersed within are some foot-tapping high distortion boogie-woogie tracks that break up the pace nicely. The lyrics are a bit inane and repetitve which is why I only give it 4-stars -- but the music more than makes up for it. I've never seen the Gotohells live, but I can assure you that they break A LOT of guitar strings and drumsticks.

4 out of 5 stars Great hard core punk band.......1999-11-25

The Gotohells are a great punk band. I first heard them on the cd, "five years on the streets," since then I have been a huge fan. They have so much energy and I would recomend this cd for anyone punk fan.

5 out of 5 stars brilliant.......2005-04-21

really the only way to describe this album is brilliance. i admit, when i first heard this album i was only used to the old acoustic simple stuff, which i loved (i somehow missed that this album had been released until 2 years after its release), i had those common "sell-out" thoughts, but after listening to it over and over again, i realized how brilliant and amazing this album is. the music itself is great, and the lyrics, as always are brilliant, honest and of course really brilliant. all of KOLS's lyrics are honest, which is really a refreshing change from really almost any music.

5 out of 5 stars would burn anything if only my KOSP would be left untouched.......2003-03-09

Having first heard Kind of Like Spitting 6 months ago, I am still blown away by the musical genius that is the man behind KOSP; Ben Barnett. Bridges Worth Burning is an amazing album and obviously kosp's most solidly structured full length to date. First heard this album at a party, where as it seemed to be, the clever thing to simply name drop unique and interesting bands. After dropping my few and (pinback, related) I confidently subsided any attempts of actually indulging myself in any of my peers choices. That is until a friend maniacally forced me to listen. Thankfully his taste easily transcends mine, and as they say the rest is history. Kind of Like Spitting is an amazing band that deserves all the recognition in the world. Thankfully that will not happen. My advice to you is check it out, and feel wonderful knowing that you are one of the few who's ears have come across such musical mastery. Ben Barnett is a musical genius. For fans of Death Cab For Cutie, Bright Eyes, Modest Mouse, and Ugly Casanova. Fans of Elliott Smith and Tom Waits might want to try his older stuff. Recommend 'Nothing Makes Sense Without It'.

4 out of 5 stars more than kind of like it.......2002-08-24

i bought this album after it was recommended to me by a record store owner. i had never heard of them before. the cd is excellent, kind of a Cursive meets Harvey Danger type sound. the only fault is that it gets a little slow towards the last few tracks. i recommend it to anyone and everyone.

dont be fooled by the black cd cover,i bet a few people have skipped past this cd thinking (no new york hardcore here)..oh how wrong, these guys carry on the NYHC tradition very well indeed

5 out of 5 stars Hard Hardcore.......2006-11-03

I frequently visit a store called "CD Exchange" in my home town...always in search of used cd's of bands i know and love. Of course, i also love discovering bands me or my friends have never heard of. I pick up this black cd NY hardcore album Burning Bridges for $5.99. To me, alot of NY hardcore music sounds alike in many ways according to the tradition of the style. But there are those few and far between that stand out amongst the rest...such bands like Agnostic Front, Madball, 25 Ta Life, and the short-lived but very influential Minor Threat from the early 80's. Burning Bridges grabbed me by the heart in its heavy unique style of hardcore metal. In short, I have read up on them and their struggle as a band and line-up changes. But this is one band that I hope emerges from their underground profile and needs to be recognized as a pillar in the NY hardcore lifestyle and music.

5 out of 5 stars It Ain't Where Your From...........2005-01-13

The Guitar Pete Blues Band has been around for awhile. Like some fine aged burbon they just get better with time or like a shot of cheap hooch they give you that feelin that somebody gave you a good kick in the ass. If you love the Blues your gonna get a big slice with a lot of different flavors. Slow and steamy, rollicking and raucaus and lowdown and dirty. Pete plays his ass off on this disc, the rhythm section slinks and kicks the hell out of things in all the right spots. Blues from New York? It ain't where your from...it's where your at.

4 out of 5 stars White, Long Island Blues Player with a Backward Guitar.......2004-07-22

Okay, so the title of this review makes a person wonder about Guitar Pete. Except for a fairly ho-hum version of Mustang Sally, the rest of this CD has some pretty damn good blues and jump music on it. Pete plays a pawn shop Aria guitar (relatively cheap), he plays the right-handed guitar left-handed . . . and he still makes the darned thing sing! Pete pulls tones from that guitar that run anywhere from a chain saw at full RPM to a sad lady's soft crying moan. Sit back and listen to "Hear the Rain." Pretty powerful stuff.

5 out of 5 stars bar room blues.......2001-02-23

If you close your eyes and turn this up, it feels like you are at a club. This album personifies smokey blues with groove. If you are looking for an album that you can really rock out to, this is definitely it.
