Album Description
They may have rationed meat, milk, canned goods, and gasoline, but there was no limit to the musical talent during World War II. Morale-boosting sounds on the home front and "over there" were one of the Allies' most potent weapons. WWII gave birth to many of the 1940s' most popular artists and songs, as well as many of the most important independent record labels. Songs That Got Us Through WWII is the first of a two-volume series collecting the hits that kept the home fires burning and brought a little bit of America to the G.I.s overseas. Compiled and developed by singer/songwriter/music historian Billy Vera, Vol. 1 features many of the era's biggest artists, including The Andrews Sisters, Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington, The Mills Brothers, The Ink Spots, Harry James, and many more.
Customer Reviews:
great compilation of 40's music........2007-03-18
i was born in 1961, but like the geeky audiophile that i am, i have eagerly dug into all the decades that have produced recorded music. i always thought that the forties were one of the weaker decades out there when it comes to sonic delights. so why do i love the two volumes of "songs that got us through wwii" so much? rhino records has a lot to do with it. as all audiophiles of the cd age now, rhino is one of the best outfits around when it comes to compilations of music. on these 2 wonderful discs from the forties, they have done it again. pure pleasure is to be had here. one drifts back to another time, across decades, to experience the popular songs of another american culture. this is a perfect introduction to that decade for anyone. having heard these two volumes, i can't wait to give the forties another chance. i am being won over, i think. thanks rhino.
Songs That Got Us Through WWII.......2007-01-04
When my mother heard this CD that I played on a recent road trip, she sang along with every one! She loved it so much that I bought one for her, plus the second one in the set. The selections are great (variety of songs and artists) and recording quality very good considering a lot of these were recorded 60 years ago. This is a great CD for anyone over 50 who grew up with this music or listened to their parents play it.
My Review.......2006-11-20
The songs on this CD are the songs I loved listening & singing to when I
was a young teen. Wonderful CD!!!
Songs that got us through "the big one"..........2006-11-20
World War II was the most catastrophic in history. Fifty-five million people were killed in just five years. Music had the power to make people feel better even when life was this rough; and this CD proves it.
The CD starts on a strong upbeat note with The Andrews Sisters belting out "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy." Vic Schoen and his orchestra perform the musical arrangement which packs a big punch! I like this song for its "swing" feel and its playfulness at the same time.
The next song, "I'll Be Seeing You," switches right away to the sadder aspects of war. This classic tearjerker song deals with the pain two lovers or spouses experience when one must go to war. Frank Sinatra sings this beautifully. Other songs that deal with the pain and stress of war include "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" performed flawlessly by Duke Ellington and his Orchestra; "I'll Walk Alone" by Martha Tilton and "I Don't Want To Walk Without You" sung by Helen Forrest with Harry James and his Orchestra.
The CD also gives us songs that express hope for a quick end to the war so that a sense of normalcy can return. I love the beautiful "When The Lights Go On (All Over The World)" and "(There'll Be Bluebirds Over) The White Cliffs Of Dover." These are truly classic pop vocals.
"G.I. Jive" and "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate The Positive" are great upbeat songs, too. Terrific!
The CD has a solid ending with the touching "It's Been A Long, Long Time" sung by Kitty Kallen with Harry James and his Orchestra performing the musical arrangement.
The quality of the remastering could be better. Throughout the CD there is a lot of surface noise and it is obvious that these songs were recorded a very long while ago. However, in the liner notes there is a note that these recordings were remastered before superior technology was available to reduce surface noise. I considered giving this CD 4 1/2 stars for this but the songs are so good that this will be a five star review.
Bill Vera contributes an informative essay for the liner notes and there are several great photos of the artists on this CD. You also get the song credits and the date each hit was released. Excellent!
Overall, this is a great CD for people who love American pop classics from the World War II era and big band vocals in general. I highly recommend this CD; and if you like it then I suggest you try volume two of Songs That Got Us Through World War II. May you enjoy this nostalgic CD as much as I did!

a surprising delight. the fuzziness of the technology that these gems were originally recorded is not too distracting. I found myself singing along. if you like nostalgic music you will fully enjoy this offering.

Beautiful Use of Voice.......2006-04-18
Nostalgic, yet refreshing. Born long after the War, I can see such different sentiments compared to today's. Wonder what we have become and where we are going with what cause?
It's not only for the boys, it's for everyone.......2006-03-25
OK, the film from which this came is a bit muddled and wasn't great. (James Caan has a unique place in show biz for having played similar characters opposite two of moviedom's great movie musical divas -- Bette & Barbra -- in classic period pieces!)
But, love the movie or not, the soundtrack is terrific. I agree with the other comments that Bette was in great voice for this and the song selection is terrific. Bette is a classic entertainer. She doesn't have the MOST thrilling voice with the greatest range, but, wow, she always knows what to do with it and she's in good company with her contemporaries like Barbra and Liza (Bette being a few years younger).
She tells a story in her music and she conveys what the song is about in an uncanny manner. I've seen her live a few times (that's a real treat if you haven't done that) and happily, the same essence that comes across in-person and makes her such a stand out in that arena also comes across in her recordings. Enjoy!
Loved the movie & the CD!.......2006-02-22
I already knew what the soundtrack would be like, as I had loved the (WWII era) songs from the movie.
It was as great as I remember.
It's good old fashioned fun.......2006-02-19
Great music, Bette is the best! However, they have a lot of spoken dialgue from the movie in the beginnings of a lot of songs, gets a little old after a while. I can't really use any of the songs for my Ipod at work because the talking confuses everyone. But overall a great album.
For the Boys: Music From The Motion Picture.......2005-10-10
Love the movie love the soundtrack. Bette Midler never fails to disappoint

A Long-kept Secret.......2005-05-22
One always wondered if the Hungarian Quartet's studio work actually represented their true artistry. Now with this unexpected set from Music & Arts, one hears a different group, expanding any previous boundaries. Their unity and freedom, lack of inhibition paired with a structural wisdom make for wonders. I find their depth and immediacy surpassing the Budapest, Busch, Vegh, and many others. The sound is so excellent on these concert performances. A real treasure for the music and performance. May one hope for more?

This disc is organized around the intriguing fact that during the one-year period from late 1948 to 1949, by odd coincidence, three important figures in twentieth century music just happened to compose cello sonatas. The three composers Poulenc, Prokofiev, and Carter, for their differences, were all experiencing the aftermath of World War II--and this reality is observable in these works. Prokofiev's sonata breathes free and is more lyrical than much of his output; the Poulenc is playful. The Carter is a different story, as the young composer was just sewing his musical oats at the time. Gilbert Kalish and Joel Krosnick have been performing together for decades, and it shows in the easy rapport they enjoy in the music. --Gwendolyn Freed

Crosby and old time radio make a great duo.......2001-02-22
Bing Crosby was superb at his radio show that was on during WWII. It was not only the singing, but it was the overall entertainment of the show. Bing Crosby's essence comes through on this CD, as he succeeds to entertain every moment. When one combines the good price, this is an unbeatable combination.

Customer Reviews:
World War II music.......2007-03-28
If you're buying just one audio collection of World War II music, this might be a good choice. Four CDs, bargain-priced, introduce 40 songs from the period, with many of the old stand-bys ("Three Little Sisters," "No Love, No Nothin'," others), along with lot of surprises ("There'll Be a Jubilee," "I'm a Cranky Old Yank in a Clanky Old Tank," others). For the price, a great introduction.
Swing Out to Victory is a winner.......2000-04-10
Four discs and about 2 hours of fine listening. Just try to keep your feet still. I run exercise classes for elders, people who were 'around', in every sense of the word, during WW II. Hearing their music brings smiles to their faces. They enjoy the trip down memory lane. A terrific variety of artists and songs not generally found on other compilations from the 40's era.

Spotty At Best And Only For Die-Hard Fans.......2001-02-20
Unfortunately this is nowhere near as great as their earlier effort "Willie And Waylon", released around 1976. Most of the material here are overblown pop covers the likes of Jimmy Webb's "Mr Shuck And Jive" and Otis Redding's "Sittin' At The Dock Of The Bay". If you haven't already, pick up on "Willie and Waylon", (recently reissued and unabridged) or the outstanding "Outlaws" collection, featuring Tom Paul Glasser and Jessie Coulter. This one is spotty at best and recommended only for die-hard fans.

Customer Reviews:
Well-produced WW.......2003-06-22
Though this is a well-produced album, it suffers a little too much from the "hollywood-ization" of early-80's country music. "Mr. Shuck and Jive", written by Jimmy Webb, would be first-rate if he hadn't done virtually the same thing with "MacArthur Park" some 15 years earlier. W&W exhibit their consummate professionalism, outclassing virtually every country performer of their time. But one has to judge this album on W&W's own high standards, and this, even with 4 stars, falls a bit short due to the overdubs, somewhat insipid material ("Lady in the Harbor", "May I Borrow...", "Write Your Own Songs" [especially annoying because it sounds as if they're purposefully trying to stick it to management, when management released the song, anyway]). Covers of "The Year that Clayton Delaney Died", "The Last Cowboy Song", and "Sittin' On the Dock of the Bay" work well. Overall, a great album by most standards, but mediocre when put against other projects by the pair, either individually or as a duo.
