This packed double-disc is the slim option for fans who find the Eagles' vaunted greatest hits sets too little and the boxed set too hefty. Hit singles large and medium are here, often ("One of These Nights," "Hotel California") still sounding definitive and even tough. Large helpings of favorite album cuts are also included, along with a taster from a promised 2004 Eagles studio reunion. Unfortunately, "Hole in the World," Don Henley's response to September 11, feels just as empty and entitled as "Get Over It," the band's previous state-of-the-union message (from which the newer song represents a philosophical 180-degree turn). But for those seeking an overview of this Southern California juggernaut's successes, as well as telling comments from band members--mostly Henley and Frey--in a well-designed booklet, Very Best will more than do. --Rickey Wright

Dollars and (common) cents........2007-06-14

I'm going to rate this CD based on a $1 per song cost to total cost for the entire CD (Apple and Rhapsody charge $1 per song).
The Eagles are great. Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Joe Walsh. I'm sure glad Hell froze over for them. Not that their recordings as the Eagles have been any good since then, but at least we might get a chance to see them live in concert.
This CD is the 'Greatest Hits' I've been waiting for. No longer do you have to buy their 'Greatest Hits - 1971 to 1975' for $14 and also their 'Greatest Hits - Vol. 2' for $15, in order to get all of their best work. There are $16 worth of great songs on here, but it will cost you $20 for the CD on Amazon. The songs are: CD 1: Tracks 1,2,3,4,7,8,13,14,15 & 17; CD 2: Tracks 1,3,5,7,9 & 10.
Better yet, all of the songs I've listed are available on iTunes. So buy each of the 16 songs individually on iTunes and save yourself $4.

Twenty hits from the Eagles make's sure you get your moneys worth. "Hotel California" & "Best of My Love" are my two faves, but I love them all. California rock and roll, gotta love it. I know this desperado type witchy woman does as she sips her tequila sunrise just before she takes it to the limit.

Confession time. I never grew up with the Eagles. Until I watched the live reunion DVD at a high end home audio shop, I only knew the names and some of the songs.

This is a darned good album that spans The Eagles portfolio of songs. The live album has a more refined sound due to age and experience of the band members BUT, this is a benchmark hits album of the original recordings.

This will probably become my favorite CD ever. I was wild about the Eagles' music as a kid, and I still love it!! I am so glad that I bought this CD.

Linda Ronstadt, who emerged from SoCal's vaunted early-'70s country-folk scene, became the American female rock superstar of the Me Decade. After the initial success of the Stone Poneys' Michael Nesmith-penned "Different Drum," Ronstadt expanded her horizons through interpretations of a long string of successful pop and R&B covers. Along the way she championed emerging songwriters like Warren Zevon ("Poor Poor Pitiful Me") and contemporary favorites like Neil Young ("Love Is a Rose") in the bargain. As the formula waned with the changing tastes of the '80s, she briefly turned to new wave before stepping boldly back to the pop standards of the '30s, '40s, and '50s. Unfortunately, this collection inexplicably skips over that three-album collaboration with arranger-conductor Nelson Riddle, a body of work that presaged the 1990s' lounge-pop revival by a full decade--and outclassed it by miles. It also eschews a compelling contemporary Latin chapter of her career in favor of her winning collaborations with Aaron Neville ("Don't Know Much" and "All My Life") and less successful AC fodder like "Winter Light" and "Somewhere Out There" with James Ingram. I was a big Linda Ronstadt fan in high school alhtough I only owned HEART LIKE A WHEEL. When I was 17 and a senior in high school, I photographed her portrait on the cover of the record in black and white and taped it to the inside of my locker door, pretending that ol' Linda was my girlfriend!
When I gained weight after the Army in 1980 and needed to lose weight, I took up jogging and it seemed that about evey night that I went out the adult contemporary radio station would play this phantom song that moved me deeply-SOMEONE TO LAY DOWN BESIDE ME. I had searched the record stores like crazy to figure out what the name of that song was that got to me so much. I found SOMEONE TO LAY DOWN BESIDE ME on her greatest hits album. It seemed to say to me that although I will never find the perfectly comptable mate, it seemed to me that what you get in life is someone to ;ay down beside you at night! I could understand this well!
Lately, when I bought a new table top stereo CD, I would put this soft romantic album on continual play and let ol' Linda sing me to sleep at night> I guess I was feeling pretty lonely at the time! My mom had to come into the room and turn off the stereo because this thing played on and on all night snd it drove my poor mom nuts! (I can also have a sense of humor when the neighbors don't annoy me!) Linda had a nice sweet romantic voice.
I was touched by HEART LIKE A WHEEL-"its only love that can take a human heart and turn it inside out!". And since my divorce, I have done my share of finding the girl of my dreams who at one time actually in my sleep since 1984 was this pretty little bleach blonde girl. That's a phantom girl, too. You can really mess your head up talking to so many pretty girls and they all turn you down.
Then the duet she sang with Erin Neville, to me I call it I DON'T KNOW MUCH! I would also put this sweet romantic song on repeat play when I was awake.
I seem to recognize that she had a Motown influence and a country influence. I recognize a Chuck Berry song and a Smokey Robinson song "OOH OOH OOH BABY BABY-gives me dirty feelings when she sings it. And I thought I picked out a Hank Williams song-was FAITHLESS LOVE on that album? But of course there were songs used in commercials-like ITS SO EASY to sell spray cleanser. And JUST ONE LOOK to sell Japanese cars. I used to really be into music!

For 2-3 years in the mid-late seventies, ED & JFC recorded some of the most melodic hits of the era. All their hit singles are captured here along with some other excellent though lesser known songs. My favorites include Lady, Westward Wind, Nights are Forever and Some Things Don't Come Easy. These songs will bring a smile to your face on one of those "Soft summer nights".

Defining an Era........2007-01-28

You can sit back on your sofa, or drive on a warm summer night, listen to this CD and let yourself slip in to the 1970's. The music of this great duo is such that you can't listen to it without getting wrapped up in it and putting yourself as the person in the songs. There were many, many great groups of this era, but none quite like ED and JFC.

Note that if you have a high-end stereo system, this CD will not be of the quality of some remastered "Greatest Hits" on the market today, but it *is* significantly better quality than most of the CD's of its era.

This album does not exist for the converted. It's not here for the tried and true Deadhead. You've already got all of this, most likely in a far superior live version from a sound board tape.

This collection exists for that guy who has heard "Touch of Grey" and "Truckin'" on the radio and wants to own them, but doesn't want to wear tye-die. It exists for that young kid who has heard legend of the Dead, but was too young too see them and missed the boat. It exists for the folks who are curious about their music yet feels intimidated by the vast amount of material available out there (106 officially released titles to date, not including all the tapes out there...) .

This disc exists for these folks, and in that light it works very well. Sure, it's incomplete as any single-disc best of by a band who recorded for 30 years would be, but it covers all the major bases. And it does so better than the "Skeletons...", "...Long Strange Trip..." and "Arista Years" compilations do, and is far-superior in sound quality than any of them. Above all, it whets the appetite for more.

So for the uninitiated, this is the best place to begin your long, strange trip. For some, this may be all you need. But chances are you'll find yourself wanting more...

It's hard to have a more milquetoast image than Olivia Newton-John. Even when she was decked out in stretch pants and stiletto heels at the end of Grease, you never mistook her for a wild girl. Proudly carrying the torch once held high by Karen Carpenter, Newton-John embodied the safer and, yes, blander side of the '70s and early '80s. But just like Carpenter went on to be rehabilitated as a pop singer, Newton-John's career deserves a second look--and this compilation is a good way to start. Even if the singer's precise touch was audible as early as 1973 (on the countryish "Let Me Be There"), she reached her peak five years later with Grease and the torchy "Hopelessly Devoted to You." "Physical" may be the best-known episode of the singer's leg-warmer years, but the one to cherish forever remains "Xanadu." On it, Newton-John basically fronted Electric Light Orchestra and the result is one of the most underrated songs of the past 25 years. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Moving to Los Angeles after an unproductive stint in Nashville, Kentucky-born Dwight Yoakam made a name for himself by reviving the more robust honky-tonk traditions of the Bakersfield Sound--a bold contrast with Music City's assembly-line approach. With 20 tracks spanning his recording career and sequenced in chronological order, the set rolls along with gusto and verve. I'm not a BIG fan of Country Music now a days. But when I listen to this Album, it's a different story. Being from Kentucky Myself it's good to have a Country ICON from here. If you like flat out Country Rock N Roll, please buy this album you want be sorry.

While "progressive bluegrass" might sound like an oxymoron, it's a good description of this dynamic acoustic trio's approach. Fans of traditional string-band music might flinch at Nickel Creek's experimentation, but there is little doubt that the threesome has attracted the largest crossover audience to the genre since Jerry Garcia. Still, the rigors of working together since they were teens have prompted an open-ended sabbatical at the end of their 2007 tour. Cue the Christmas 2006 hits package--it's the perfect time to cash in on the catalog with the band still hot as an active unit. Since Nickel Creek has recorded just three albums for Sugar Hill, it does seem a bit premature for this recap. But the label has done an admirable job by adding a bonus DVD of the act's seven videos and arranging the audio tracks in non-chronological order to enhance the flow. If anyone had any doubts that these youngsters were the future of bluegrass, Reasons Why should erase them. They never let their instrumental virtuosity on guitar, fiddle, and mandolin get in the way of writing terrific material such as "When in Rome"--a should-have-been hit on the order of R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion"--and they also deliver the goods in concert. A nine-minute live version of "The Fox"--one of two previously unreleased performances that close this collection--proves they can mash up Bach, Bill Monroe, and Dylan with such cool aplomb, one can only imagine what the future holds. Until then, we have this compact reminder of Nickel Creek's strengths and potential--a superb collection that is as classy and challenging as the group itself, and leaves the listener wanting more. --Hal Horowitz

This cd was defective. It was suppossed to have two cds but only one works and the other one is blank.
I have a very busy work schedule and it is a real hassle for me to take the time to return it so I have not even started the process.
This is why I hesitate to buy online for this very reason.

Not Your Average Bluegrass.......2007-06-03

My wife found this group when she came across their song Robin & Marion. We fell in love with the music immediately. This is not you father's bluegrass band. They seem to draw from a myriad of influences and styles: a blend of bluegrass, Irish folk, DMB, and even some 60's American folk (think Simon and Garfunkel).
This particular collection, selected from all of their releases, is wonderful and serves as a good introduction to the trio and their music. The DVD portion of this only covers their music videos and I truly think they shine best in their live performances. I would have liked to have seen one or two of those included.

Great overview.......2007-05-26

This CD/DVD set is the final chapter overview for Nickel Creek. Its members are now young adults. Of the 3, no doubt Chris Thile will forge a career, if he chooses, that will be as memorable as some of his mentors, viz Mike Marshall and Mark O'Connor.

This set is a great taste of a wonderful collective. God bless them all in future: good music, good souls and wonderful musical fellowship.

Nice 2 disk set but did anyone notice in the credits for the video disk that it lists 8 videos - Ode to a Butterfly seems to be missing...What happened ?

This is a solid CD with The Very Best Nickel Creek offers. The tracks show great variety yet still mesh together well. The blue-grass sound is great for relaxing to yet is upbeat enough that it will keep you entertained. Great CD and I recommend it to all!

Hard as it is to go wrong when shopping for a Brother Ray package, some career-spanning compilations bundle the decades better than others. Count this one, true to its title, among the very best. The track sequencing is straight-up chronological, opening with 1954's groundbreaking blues and gospel mingling "I've Got a Woman." From there it charges through the late-'50s Atlantic era, rounding up classic singles like "Hallelujah (I Love Her So)," "(Night Time Is) The Right Time," and "What'd I Say." By the time the disc lands us in the '60s, the Genius has saddled up to explore his country side, turning in such popular-music-altering hits as "Georgia on My Mind" and "I Can't Stop Loving You." A final cut jumps into the '80s for the Willie Nelson duet "Seven Spanish Angels," leaving the listener with a solid--and deeply satisfying--sense of Charles' bold artistic wanderings. Great CD for those who love blues and Ray Charles who has a bit of rock `n roll. All the songs somehow relate to women, heartbreak and good times. Cheaper than the Starbucks edition or Ray cd.
