This spellbinding blues-gospel blend from 1966 is one of the best (albeit not particularly broadly celebrated) revivalist records of the '60s. Tennessee-born Mississippi Fred McDowell was 64 when he cut the 16 tracks found here. Still, he was only a half-dozen years into a recording career that would end with his death in 1972. For this outing, the Delta bluesman explores his reverent side with assistance from his wife, Annie Mae, and their church choir from Como, Mississippi. With McDowell's assured guitar and fiery but friendly vocals in the fore, the choristers wrap themselves around the songs with enraptured ebullience. A few of these tunes will feel familiar to pop fans; "Jesus on the Main Line" was covered by Ry Cooder, while the Rolling Stones adopted "You Got to Move." Everything here, however, makes a deep connection. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars The Real Deal.......2001-10-09

The old time blues/gospel music on this collection is as real and raw as it gets. You'll recognize lots of the tunes but you have never heard them like this. If the first and last tracks of this album don't move you, you're half dead anyway!

5 out of 5 stars Solid rural black gospel blues.......2000-08-01

Every track on this collection is solid rural blackgospel blues. Fred McDowell is joined in his vocals by his wife and three members of Hunter's Chapel in Como, Miss. McDowell accompanies the group on bottleneck guitar.

This is the powerful, raw blues polished not in the recording studio but in life. Their voices blend in an emotional range ranging from rough and raw to nearly lyrical. Jesus Is On the Main Line could have easily come off a recording from the teens or twenties. You Got to Move has a smoother, more forties and beyond sound. Amazing Grace is a wonderful rendition with the voices interweaving - somewhat as if you merged the call and response style with a lining out style -- the result is absolutely spectacular.

4 out of 5 stars A different kind of gospel.......2000-07-10

If you think Amazing Grace is a cliche, you probably haven't heard the very different rendition found on this album.

Simple, unembelished, and raw, the arrangements here bring out the emotional complexity, irony, and anger in southern black christianity.

Today's gospel music is all polish and electronic keyboards, attempting to appeal to young people through the infusion of elements like rap. I wonder if there are many groups like this left today, delivering the music in a more "authentic" and ultimately more satisfying way.

      4 out of 5 stars Pretty much a bullseye!.......1999-08-13

This is a really good collection. The Memphis Minnie selections are excellent choices, and I almost would've paid the price for the Mississippi Matilda songs alone. Unfortunately there are only two of them; the liner notes indicate that her material is sparse and based on the slight digging I've done, it's true. But if you like classic and country blues, especially sung by women (there are a few duets with the men on here as well) you will love this CD. Memphis Minnie was unusual for blues women of this time period in that she was an excellent guitar player as well as singer, but in addition she is accompanied on four of the songs by a guitarist who is believed to be Big Bill Broonzy. This CD is definitely recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Pop country by a wonderful singer.......2005-01-13

This is the first of four twofers released in Britain in the late nineties containing her three Columbia and five Warner albums. Here you will find the first two Columbia albums - Miss the Mississippi (from 1979) and These days (from 1980).

Although Crystal's style of music had pop influences in her United Artists recordings, these two albums showed a greater pop influence and alienated a lot of country fans. Listening to these albums now, there is more of a country feel to them than a lot of the music you hear now on American country radio although in each album, there is only one real country recording.

On the first album, the real country recording is, of course, the title track, a classic Jimmie Rodgers track that Emmylou also revived on her album, Roses in the snow. The big American pop hit here is Half the way (it didn't chart in Britain although it got plenty of airplay) but there are other great songs too, including It's like we never said goodbye, The blue side and A little bit of the rain as well as great covers of The other side of me (Neil Sedaka) and Dancing the night away (Amazing rhythm aces - also covered by the Oak Ridge Boys and Tanya Tucker).

The real country song on the second album is Help yourselves to each other, a cover of a Don Williams song. The rest of the album is further removed from country than its predecessor but is a very interesting album to those with broad tastes. It includes Lover man and What a little moonlight can do, two songs that were new to me when I originally bought the vinyl version of this album, but which show Crystal's interest in the Great American Songbook, something that has become much clearer in her more recent albums. Other outstanding tracks include If you ever change your mind and Take it easy (a cover of a Delbert McClinton song).

While I prefer Crystal's music with United Artists, these two albums are interesting in their own way and, judged on their own merit, are well worth hearing. Just don't expect to hear much country music here.
