About the Artist
With every song, Jeff Middleton leads you on a guided tour of your memories. His lyrics can make you believe he tapped your phones the first time your heart was broken or he was sitting at the next table the last time you fell in love. Defying classification, Middleton's music strolls through pop, folk, country and rock with grace and ease. Although it is never obvious when the tour has moved from one landmark to the next, you subtly become aware that you have no choice but to follow and see where you'll wind up. Middleton is a vastly talented singer/songwriter whose ability to catch the melodic or lyric hook and take the listeners on a trip through their own experiences is exceptional.

Born on Long Island, Middleton's hometown is South Orange, New Jersey, where he grew up in the long shadow of New York City. A member of the rat race at age 14, he rode the subways to high school in Manhattan, where he taught himself guitar and played in a number of bands. Knocking out a wide range of tunes from Van Halen to Van Morrison, Middleton's unique style was developing from a diverse mix of influences. Just by looking at the titles in Middleton's record collection, it was clear there were no limits and little regard for the music industry's boxed-in styles: Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi - required reading for anyone from Jersey; Billy Joel, Iron Maiden, Richard Marx, The Cure, The Ramones, U2, etc.

"I wanted to be able to play songs I loved, as well as the ones the audience loved," Middleton says today. "Many times they weren't exactly the same set of songs, but it definitely helps you learn what moves people and eventually you use that in your own writing."

Middleton went off to college to study history and medicine, but soon realized that his heart was elsewhere. He joined an a cappella group his freshman year at Haverford College and started playing cafes on his own. Those experiences opened up his ears even more, and his songwriting started to flourish. Writing and arranging on both the piano and the guitar, he sought out more eclectic styles to incorporate into his songs. As a guitar player and singer for a pop/rock band and a singer in the campus R&B/funk/soul contingent, Middleton's style continued to absorb genre after genre. The final piece of the puzzle - country- came when Garth Brooks performed on The Tonight Show. Middleton happened to catch the performance and it was there the Nashville bug bit.

After graduation, Middleton continued to improve his chops in Philadelphia, playing at local haunts around town, writing, recording and performing. After two years in Center City, Middleton took a job teaching high school history in New York. During the next 12 months, the move to Nashville was planned.

Over the last five years in the Volunteer state, Middleton embarked on a path that as unique as his music. Just as he has demonstrated his ability to construct music from a diverse foundation of building blocks, he has developed not only his talents as a musician, but also his talents in the business world. While he was earning gigs at the Bluebird Café and Kerrville Folk Festival, Middleton was also earning his MBA from Vanderbilt University. As he moves into each new stage of his career, there is no doubt that his musical versatility and desire to continue learning about himself, his audience and the world they share will conspire to create songs that can speak to everyone.

And for Middleton, it will always be about creating those songs. "It is crucial for any writer or performer to take an experience that lives inside himself and lay it out - musically, lyrically, or otherwise - in a song that inspires the audience to feel that way too."

By now, everyone knows how adventurous Radiohead are, which makes this live record--a hairy rock-band cliché--seem like a strange capper to their decidedly cliché-rejecting records. But throughout the hubbub surrounding Kid A, and its Amnesiac companion piece, Radiohead never embraced the notion that they're reinventing anything. Even while a tempest of critics hailed the band as saviors, pulling rock from the jaws of consumerist self-destruction, the band ignored it all, going into stadiums and working out their twisted angst through angry, direct means. "National Anthem"'s fuzzed-out riff rages aggressively behind Thom Yorke's crazed, breath-scat vocal, giving the song a rollicking edge that was nowhere on Kid A. The same effect is heard on "Idioteque," as Yorke, getting backup vocal help from the crowd, sings over an acoustic beat, removing the distant, electronic touch of the studio version. "True Love Waits" aptly ends the record with Yorke and a solo acoustic guitar, which finds just the right touch on a song that Radiohead have played with for years (long-term fans should note the first ever appearance on record of the track). In the end, Radiohead don't really stray too far from the original templates of these songs, they merely play up the highs and milk the lows, just like any good rock band should. -- Matthew Cooke

4 out of 5 stars Umm...where is "Fake Plastic Trees"? .......2007-03-25

Okay. I love Radiohead to death. But i have one problem. Where in the heck is "Fake Plastic Trees"? That song is supposed to be on here. Live Recordings? I am so glad that the dreadful "Creep" isn't on here, although it wouldn't be too terribley bad. I am happy with everything else, but am saddened that "Trees" didn't make the cut. I wonder why? Is the song not good enough? I have heard the song played live plenty of times, and that's why i'm surprised that it isn't on here. Oh well. I'm not complaining as much as i could be. :)

3 out of 5 stars RADIOHEAD Is my favorite band, but..........2007-03-06

First, let me say that Radiohead is BY FAR my favorite band, and I've listened to many. The reason I gave this CD only three stars is not because it is bad (the quality of Radiohead's material makes that nearly impossible), but because it could have been MUCH better. How could it have been better? Firstly, I heard the live version of "The National Anthem" at the Glastonberry Festival, and it is much better and all-around harder rocking than this much-vaunted version. Secondly, the recording quality is sub-par, which is generally not a huge problem, but Radiohead is a band that cannot be truly appreciated without good recordings. Finally, there is only 8 songs on here, and while "True Love Waits" is an appreciated inclusion, there should've been more tracks, especially for the price of admission.

5 out of 5 stars great.......2007-01-14

incredible live versions of 7 previously recorded radiohead songs, plus one song (true love waits) that has never been released before, incredible sound and performance

5 out of 5 stars Can't See Them Live? Buy This........2006-07-13

So we all know that a CD can't replace the live experience, but this one definitely withstands the test of time. The recording values are unparalleled by other band's live sets and the song selections capture the band's adventurous ethos from the first second. From the opening radio static of "The National Anthem" to the the final acoustic fade-out of "True Love Waits," this album surprises almost every time you listen to it, both in the ways in which Yorke & Co. complicate the original studio versions and in the performance abandon which they bring to their songs; you can hear it coming from the speakers.

Radiohead is the best live band I have ever had the privilege to witness (and I've seen Floyd, the Stones, et al). I've seen them in Grant Park in Chicago and in the Sound Advice Amphitheatre in Boca Raton. Both times I've had epiphonies (sonic epiphanies) attending their performance (these were certainly aided by the monster video screens and certain unnamed chemicals). I am struck by how well these epiphonies translate to CD here. "Morning Bell" is especially effective on this CD (just like it is in the flesh). When the band goes out into the electrosphere on their assorted gadgetry, it goes to such unexpected places that one can't help but swoon into oblivion (video/chemical-aided or otherwise, I can attest). This unexpected element is what keeps them at their place as the best band out there today; they are constantly able to surprise themselves, I am sure. You hear such prime examples of this aleatory sublime on this live CD, certainly in a much better fashion on the myriad bootlegs that exist of their live shows. The editing, recording, and performances on here are all superb. Buy this, whether you've seen them live or not.

5 out of 5 stars There are two colors in my head.......2006-07-05

While this may just be a release of live songs that have already been released, it is a must have in my opinion. The songs that I like best are; Like Spinning Plates, Everything in It's Right Place, and Dollars and Cents. The live versions equal or better the originals. In many cases I feel they are more powerful. True Love Waits is also good. I'm not sure what release if any that one is from.

5 out of 5 stars Great EP.......2004-12-10

I am a diehard Radiohead fan and if I had to pick one RH cd to own, it would be this ep. It is absolutely facinating, the best live stuff I've ever heard. It is truely amazing how RH took seemingly unperformable songs from Kid A and Amnesiac and adapted them for the stage. Every song on here actually rivals it's album counterpart, and that's quite a feat considering the songs we're talking about.

The National Anthem breaks in at the beginning, resulting in the most kick ass Radiohead song I've ever heard. It is followed by the title track I Might Be Wrong, which comes off a strangely hypnotic, head bounce inducing beauty. Next is a fantastic version of Morning Bell, with haunting, screaming guitars and that perfect snare drum we've all come to love. Like Spinning Plates is a melancholy masterpiece, trading in the album versions backward samples for a lovely solo piano. The live version of Idioteque is next, and it is truely one of the most moving RH recordings I've heard. You can feel the desparation in Thom's voice, and you really get a more solid idea of what he's talking about. Everything In It's Right Place, a Kid A favorite, is transformed here into a great bass song with endless echoes of voice sampling. And it's all done live. Dollars and Cents is amazing here too, much angrier and more solidified than on Amnesiac. The ep ends with the acoustic song True Love Waits, one of RH's few truely personal and emotional songs, and arguably the best.

Buy this ep! You will not regret it.

5 out of 5 stars A transcendent album!.......2002-12-11

And the only place you will find "True Love Waits". There is not much Radiohead out there that I have not heard and this album is great.

5 out of 5 stars This must be right!.......2002-11-22

I am one who only loves live albums when they represent the true musicianship of the band.....This one truly does! I've seen Radiohead live before on this tour, and can say that all the songs here are done(to my liking)better than their original renditions...especially the title song and 'Spinning Plates'. My only questionable critique of this is that it should have been longer and included some of their past great songs, however, those like me who love the direction in which the band is going, will love this......and those who love great live performances will love this.

4 out of 5 stars Thom at his best.......2002-05-28

One of the best live albums by a long shot. If your a collector, its an absolute must. The live version of, "Like Spinning plates" with its piano introduction will leave you mesmorised. Johnny rocks on "idiotheque" with a version thats even better than the original Kid A track. The last track "True love waits" may not appeal to some people, but nether the less, its still a good song. If you like Radiohead, youll love this. A must.....

I own this Common Thrill CD, and I thought like a lot of groups out there, the magic of the studio probably made `em sound better on it than they would at a live performance. I really like the music though, so when my friend told me they were playing when I visited Boston, we put down the cover for their show at the Paradise. But word was out that the singer had laryngitis and was having a hard time talking. I didn't want to forfeit the cash and drag my friend out just cuz someone was down on their luck. Then, I looked on the stage, and saw a big jar of honey by the singer's microphone. Uh oh. So no one had any big expectations when he got up to sing, but he sure did. And the guitars!! Really grrrrrreat. People at the next table stopped blabbing. Others were sticking their heads in from the street and the hallway leading to the other club. (Well, that's probably cuz the guy is not hard to look at either.) There's a lot of comparison between him and Bono and Morrison. Easy to understand why Amazon put Common Thrill with How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. And as a matter of fact, after one song where he was screaming away, (I got goose bumps!) I actually heard a guy at the back tell a woman, "He is really good. I can hear him channeling Morrison." That guy was the lead singer for the other group! What can I say? Common Thrill is the real rockin' deal! They were worth more than the price of admission; sounded just as good as they do on this CD which is damn good. All I can say is: You better get this CD and if Common Thrill reads this: Gimmee more. Ya made my trip to Boston.

5 out of 5 stars Damn! This is good.. a strange delight -a Future Collector's Item .......2005-10-31

Ok, I didn't expect this CD to be this good. I admit I bought this CD out of curiosity because of the comparison with Jim Morrison in a review I read - (I confess to being an occasionally rabid fan of Jim Morrison and/or The Doors, and wonder why no one has ever done anything to my knowledge even remotely similar - obvious answer: because, to quote Jim, "there will never be another one, like you").

However, the first track on the disc sounds so much like Jim Morrison and The Doors, vocally, musically, lyrically, it gave me pause. The lyrics have that kind of terseness and intensity and darkness and brightness simultaneously. "The fever's in my head, the fever's in my soul".

I wound up finding similarities on the rest of this CD to Radiohead, Coldplay, U2, Sigur Ros, Jeff Buckley... I'm a big fan especially of Sigur Ros and Jeff Buckley.

But my favorite track on this is definitely "Morphine Drip"... it's got a watery, otherworldy vibe and is one of the most intense songs I've ever heard, and the backstory on that song is tragic and spooky.

Since buying the disc I've found out quite a bit about this band. Anyone who knows anything about the band surely has heard/read the rumor or backstory to the recording session; that the CD was made during the week that the father of one of the band members died and the aunt of another band member was dying, and that at the end of a long day, just before leaving, all band members exhausted from a long day of recording, a scrap version of "Morphine Drip" was recorded going into midnight with candles in the studio; and that one of the band members then went home only to find a message on his voicemail that his father had just passed away at midnight while they had been recording that song; and that the band had wanted to retake the song until they heard that this happened, that the guy had died while they were recording that song...and they just left it as is, scrap take... warts and all. Whether fact or myth, the incredible mood captured in that song sure sounds genuine, like it reaches deep into darkness and deep into light; sounds very incredibly real. I have to say when the chorus kicks in to "Morphine Drip" it's positvely gut wrenching, it brought tears to my eyes the first time I heard it. The singing reminds me of Jimmy Gnecco and another great band called "Ours".

"Pieces" is a gem on this album, it's a moody U2-ish, Church-ish (think "Under the Milky Way") tune that I can't stop playing.

This CD has a certain raw intensity to it like the first CD's of many great bands, The Doors first CD being one example of that. In a way this music doesn't sound like any band I've heard, in spite of having many influences that are almost overt. It's a strange delight. If you want to hear something different, something that might blow your mind then this is a good cd to buy. I came to amazon to see if they carry an earlier CD of theirs I heard about.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning Lead VOX in whispers or screams/Slammin Guitars/"Not your Uncle's Alternative Rock.......2005-10-30

(Updated June 11, 2007) When I first heard Common Thrill this spring, I had that same sense of discovery I had last Christmas when my brother played me a "found tape" he got of the Beach Boys jammin' in their basement. Even in their humble beginnings, they had it, and so does Common Thrill. If you are into music, real music, you will be into the latest Common Thrill CD. I sent it out to my brother and friends everywhere, rockers and opera singers alike. They all loved it. Why? Common Thrill delivers the expected alternative sounds and then blows your mind with the unexpected over the top music. Bro told me, "These guys, Common Thrill are not your Uncle Alternative Rock." That genre had emerged as an angry independent revolutionary rage against the industry machine but over the past 20+ years has begun to follow the well-beaten commercial path. Common Thrill has taken up arms and is clearing a fork in that road with literate lyrics and music that transcend a rebellious message and overly manufactured sounds. Sure Common Thrill fits the genre and does smack of the best: Cold Play, Floyd, Radiohead, U2, Moody Blues or... you tell me. But Common Thrill takes a chance with the diversity and experimentation aspect of Alternative and in so doing; they are riding the crest of Neo Alternative wave. Their sound is not industrial or mechanized. Instead they seem to be going forward by going backward a step and focusing more on the lead singer with traditionally-structured lyric-centered tunes. And they have the talented frontman to do that, John Courduvelis. He has one of those rare countertenor voices, and it is shimmeringly honied. (Without a doubt the beauty and range of his voice and his striking good looks are why he is likened to a young Jim Morrison, JDM.) Courduvelis softly lures us into the melancholy tune Morphine Drip. His rich falsetto notes cascade in mournful whispering brilliance on the first word "starless" and take us on an intoxicating voyage through the sad tune to a primal, but melodic, scream. It is flawless, executed in long clear agony. This sung scream is a tool he uses as effectively and beautifully as Jimmy Gnecco of "Ours" as we hear in the playfully dark tune, Pieces, one of my favorite. Common Thrill's CD further showcases their diversity with the downright electric Whiskey Glow, a sort a Delta Funk-based tune, that would make Muddy himself tap his feet and grin. The beat got into me when I heard it on the CD and live? It got into everyone. Common Thrill is headed for greatness. Obviously Radiohead's producer, Jim Warren, knew exactly what he was doing by keeping the Common Thrill's CD real. It has that straight-from-the-garage-sound that lets you know you are listening to something fresh and new. Common Thrill's CD is an eclectic sampling executed with raw, slammin' talent by their experienced musicians. It is a rare gem, already a collector's item. Now the buzz is the boys are at it again--back in the studio wih Jim Warren. Can't wait to hear the new CD!! Maybe September of this year--2007.
