5 out of 5 stars A step back towards country.......2005-01-13

This is the first of four twofers released in Britain in the late nineties containing her three Columbia and five Warner albums. Here you will find her last Columbia album (Hollywood Tennessee, from 1981) and her first Warner album (True love, from 1982).

Just when country fans were thinking of giving up on Crystal's music, she recorded the album Hollywood Tennessee, which had more of a country feel than its two predecessors (Miss the Mississippi, These days) though still very much of a pop-country album. The album title, a combination of two of the song titles, nicely sums up the type of music to be found on the album. Covers of two Bill Withers songs (Ain't no sunshine, Lean on me) and Crying in the rain (Everly Brothers) together with some great original songs (You never gave up on me, Love crazy love and the two title tracks among them) make this one of Crystal's two best albums from the eighties, the other being True love.

4 out of 5 stars really short running time, but filled with great material.......2004-11-12

It's impossible to deny the feeling that Crystal Gayle's 1981 album "Hollywood, Tennessee" was considerably affected by "contractual obligation" syndrome. This was her last in a series of 3 albums for Columbia Records (NOT Capitol as indicated above). It's got 10 songs and the running time is well under half an hour, & several of the songs are covers of very big hits--there's a version of the Everly Brothers hit "Crying In the Rain", and not one, but TWO Bill Withers songs--"Lean On Me", & "Ain't No Sunshine." All that said, the words "rush job" come to mind in a big way. Here's the thing though--almost everything on here is great. Even the 3 aforementioned covers all work. Crystal delivers a masterful vocal on the terrific, lush soft rock version of "Ain't No Sunshine"; "Lean On Me" is done at basically twice the speed of Withers' original--a smart idea, and it works great; & "Crying In the Rain" includes a highly effective descending electric piano part. The disco-flavored feel-good tune "Keepin' Power" is a gem, as is the wonderfully melodic, emotional ballad "Love Crazy Love" which has Crystal doing her trademark tugging of the heartstrings. "You Never Gave Up On Me" is a bit sappy, but has a gorgeous chorus. Crystal even comes up with just the right vocal treatment for the up tempo, show-tune-ish "Hollywood" helping make the song utterly charming & irresistible, & the album ends wonderfully with the poignant, electric piano + fiddle + vocals ballad "Tennessee". The strongly country-flavored "Livin' In These Troubled Times" is infectious, & "The Woman In Me" is a lovely, tender ballad. So, the album is almost uniformly terrific with not a single bad tune, and Crystal's vocals are magical throughout--the album does a great job of demonstrating her brilliance and spirit in handling different styles. The running time is indeed short, and that ends up being the only real thorn in the album's side. Still, with all the great material that's here, this album definitely worth getting--if you see it on vinyl in nice condition for $1 somewhere, it`s a steal.
